  • Composed by the remarkable James Newton Howard. I transcribed / midi programmed this cue in Cubase completely by ear, so inevitably there will be a few wrong or missing notes. This was simply an educational experiment to see how realistic I could get my mock-ups sounds, and also to gain a better understanding of James Newton Howard's orchestration process. I thought I'd share, as some may find this helpful. For educational purposes only.

That's a very well made mockup. I see you used Cinematic Studio sample libraries, which is good, as I always wondered how would they actually sound in a complex musical score like this one.

really nice work here Rhian. He has such a high level of sophistication in his writing and orchestrations

And it was then, Rhian becomes the Cubase Zen Master, opens up the portal to epic world. Really well done, lots of dynamic and detail going on. Love around 1:50, if you think about the medium, 100 years ago to now, to be able to emulate or create what we can do now huh?

Thanks man. It was such a great exercise, trying to get a better understanding of Newton Howards orchestration style. he is the master. Such a stunning score. One of my faves.

@@RhianSheehanMusic yeah man, to me it sounds very good and if no one told me i would think just listening, it was a real orchestral recording session. great job! you have inspired me to do something similar, ive been testing i with a faux live band sound recorded on faux 70s hardware! bring on the virtual mixing desks and space echoes! :)

You say that you are doing everything by ear. Is there a technique how to distinguish several instruments or groups?

I’m not sure I had any particular technique other than listening intensely to the parts. It helps to work section by section. From memory I started sketching this mock by listening to what strings were playing first, listening to all the harmonies etc, working bar by bar, and so on and so on. Inevitably, some of my voicings will be incorrect here and there.
