Honestly I hated practically everything in this season but What makes me so crazy about this season is the lack of agency they give Penelope! She doesn’t call of her courtship with the Lord he does, she doesn’t confront Cressida or her mother Colin does that for her, she doesn’t even out herself to the ton the queen does. She doesn’t even really defend herself to Colin she just sits there tearing eyed hoping he’s going to love her! She came off as a coward! Like she is Lady Whistledown, the most powerful woman in London who as a teenager has outsmarted the whole ton but in her own season she’s just a bumbling idiot unable to hold basic conversation! Like WTF! I find the whole makeover and lesson storyline reductive and frankly insulting. I have had to sit through so many Rom-Coms telling me that I have to physically conform in order to find someone love me and that’s all this did!
Listen, about the last part with the makeover... she only did it to feel confident in herself, which is a totally valid reason to do it. And it wasn't like she was dressing unlike her true self after the makeover, but rather the exact opposite. Her mother used to dress her in those yellow dresses and ugly hairstyles and her makeover (which is essentially just a fashion style change for her) was her actually dressing how she wanted which made her more comfortable and confident. It's not like those romcoms where the character gets out of their preferred clothes and into the ones someone else wants them in, but rather the opposite which, in my opinion, is quite a great thing 🤷♀️
Okay, you make some valid points, but I would like to raise you some others. Firstly, Bridgerton is an ensemble show, meaning (hopefully) that Polin will at least have some storyline in S4, like Kanthony in S3. SO, simply, we still don't know what the future holds. Especially with Penelope's line "Whistledown has upset many who will not soon forget. The future may not have such happy days," I think that's the hint for their S4 conflict. Secondly, Penelope didn't reveal herself to the entire ton, she revealed herself to the people willing to go to the Dankworth-Finch ball, which are an unpopular family. The ton found out off screen, and by then, it's the epilogue & some time has already passed. Thirdly, the Queen never had a purely antagonistic view of LW. Yes, she was always trying to unmask her, but the entire scene with Lady Danbury was there to show how Charlotte saw it as a game, & her character development was about letting the game continue. The ton were also shown to have a love-hate relationship w/ LW. As for how Penelope could continue being LW, it's clear the column was going to go through some changes. I wouldn't be surprised if LW is going to be de-clawed and will be more of a news-style, especially considering Penelope's lines about using the column for good and "giving a voice to the other voiceless." Presumably, she's going to be under a tight leash, but will continue to be able to write the column. I do agree that the LW drama kind of eclipsed Polin's love story, but only slightly. I think it was an important part of their relationship, so it kind of had to take the forefront for a bit. But personally, that's not a drawback, just because of how much I adore Penelope's entire character lol. I love the season more and more the more I think about it XD. THE REAL CRIME IS THE LACK OF SCREEN TIME. I don't understand why they couldn't just shove an extra 10 minutes of pure Polin content into my veins every episode (except for maybe the last one cuz it's like 1:30 mins, somewhere there.)
