EPIC FAST 420HP BEAST! MOUNTUNE SPORTS CAT & MSD420 REVIEW! | FOCUS RS

  • I've played with the Mountune full system AND MSD420!
    I have now had some time to get properly acquainted with the Mountune sports cat / downpipe for my MK3 Ford Focus RS as well as the MSD420 map and so I am back to give you a rundown of my views, thoughts and feelings as well as some cool sound bites showcasing the stage 2 plus awesomeness from Mountune and Motorsport Developments!
    Hopefully you will get a good idea of the sounds the setup now makes and the performance gains it provides although I am aware that it doesn't always come across fully on camera vs real life!
    I cover many things including plenty of chat about how the full exhaust system sounds in different scenarios as well as discussing the other aspects gained by installing the Mountune sports cat and indeed discuss the MSD420 map, what it is like compared to my previous setups and other aspects such as hardware requirements!
    I include some chat about what I feel are the drawbacks or negatives of the setup including the ongoing issue that I have with the smell of exhaust gasses entering the cabin which Mountune have told me should be happening and to get it checked for a leak (see next week's video!) but hopefully that will all be sorted soon and I don't think it is a major issue as there are no codes being thrown, no loss of power or any smoke blowing or anything else for that matter.
    I splice in sounds, trying to capture the array of different sounds that the setup now makes with MSD420 and Mountune sports cat / downpipe in conjunction with the V3 exhaust from Mountune that I already have. I show you static revs, driving revs / pulls, a cold start and I even find a bridge / mini tunnel for some special fun!
    The sports cat is of course the gateway to stage 2 plus - it enabled the switch to MSD420 - but, as I felt after install, pickup feels faster and more eager with the Mountune downpipe even on MSD400!
    Going to MSD420, however, is a whole different ball game!
    Having the full setup at 420hp is really a new experience both in terms of sound and performance! The sound is very much like a rally car with an epic soundtrack of loud pops and crackles along with lots of corresponding burbles to create the whole sonic package. The speed that can be achieved is immense but it is not just about top line numbers, MSD420 adds plenty of extra torque where it really counts and where you really feel it - in the mid range - so the power is even more accessible and feels rather insane, especially when b road blasting!
    I really do believe the Mountune V3 and sports cat /downpipe combined with the other hardware I have and the MSD420 map is one of the best set ups available for the MK3 Focus RS!
    Going into the future, should I stop seeking more power? Should I get a custom version of MSD420 done? Should I get the wallet out and go big turbo? Let me know in the comments!
    Mountune say:
    The mountune downpipe / sports cat has been engineered for the mk3 focus rs to reduce exhaust back-pressure at the turbocharger, allowing faster response and additional power.
    Features include a large diameter 5” motorsport-type, 200 cell count metal substrate honeycomb catalyst, to ensure effective, ultra high flow performance in extreme environments.
    Motorsport Developments say:
    Maximum power output on factory engine internals and further increases the engines torque output to 580 NM and peak power output to 420PS.
    The rev limit is extended slightly and all the temperature protection features of the management system are retained and further optimised to suit the vehicles new power output. Rest assured that if your coolant, oil, exhaust or charge temperatures get too high, the ECU will actively lower your available throttle opening and boost pressures as well as add fuel to cool things down until such time as the temperatures are back within safety parameters. Full LSPI / Knock control is retained at factory safety levels.

      @@AdamRainey check out my ecoboost on my channel. You should datalog while you drive all the time as well. Sometimes that data can save your ass when fighting a warranty claim. For example if you blow your motor and the see you are tuned they can deny warranty claims. But say you were datalogging and that log shows the failure of say a fuel pressure sensor that is on them not you.

    So I get that the torque is limited to 580nm for safety reasons like clutch and internals , is that correct ? Just bought a 200 cells cat so gonna upgrade to 400bhp soon to :)

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  3 года назад +1

      it probably is on the limit of what the internals can handle, clutch is dependant on how it is driven but probably much more and it would wear quickly at which point it would make sense to upgrade to a competition clutch

    • @goncalosimao9308
      @goncalosimao9308 4 года назад +1

      As an owner, I have mine with 510NM and if I change gear fast, it does have some slip, if you just floor it, no worries as long as you don’t change gear, if you do, bye bye clutch.

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  3 года назад +3

      Clutches don't last forever anyways so if it does start to go (seems fine right now) then that is just an opportunity to upgrade!

    • @Rookiereece
      @Rookiereece 4 года назад +1

      In Ni, we can only get Super Unleaded which is 97 octane, the rest of the UK can get 99 octane which is better it's quite a shame

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  3 года назад +1

      Yea Reece, it really is a shame. Worse down south, they can't even get 97 so have to rely on octane boosters

    • @stanelder9995
      @stanelder9995 3 года назад

      @@Rookiereece I would add that the octane calculation is different in the US - in the UK it is just the RON value IIRC - in the US it is (RON + MON) /2. So 97 MON in UK is roughly equivalent to the US 93 (Premium)

    is the 420 at the wheels or crank?

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  2 года назад +2

      the short answer is crank. The long answer is : advertised numbers over here in the UK/Europe for tuning tend to be talked about and advertised in the same way as and in relation to how car manufacturers advertise their horsepower numbers from factory so either hp or ps, with hp being metric horsepower and equivalent to ps. This translates to crank horsepower in American terms. So in this case if you think about how ford advertised the RS as having 345hp - my tuner has increased this to 420hp so this shows the comparable increase over stock whereas if my tuner was advertising the wheel horsepower from the dyno, it would probably come out maybe 351 at the wheels so it would confuse people who are considering tuning their car and probably put them off if they think they are only going to gain 6 horses which is of course not the case

    • @WrenchHeadsTuning
      @WrenchHeadsTuning 2 года назад

      @@AdamRainey thank you for that information, my RS is currently tuned and putting down 380hp/ 385ps to the wheels with 421 torque/ 572nm. so my theory is that this tune would put me in the range that i am looking for of 420 hp to the wheels.

  • @LB83.
    @LB83. Год назад

    On my st i kinda hate the powerband to mutch torque compared to hp 200 more is to mutch rathe have 350 hp and 450 instead 345 and 530 and after 5800 rpm its dead witch makes the 2.3 engine weak between cylinder 2and 3 turbo side not enough material
