Such a fabulous video Laura! Loved it ❤️ I think Marilyn herself inspired beauty. For five years I’ve worked in a museum that had a dedicated ‘Marilyn’s Room’. We had many original Marilyn’s belongings, from clothes to accessories and the famous make-up case! I guess that was her professional makeup case, probably used by Snyder but contained most of favourite brands. She also loved Revlon nail varnish. I also believe she had dry skin, apparently she used olive oil as skin/face moisturiser when not wearing makeup and all her creams were very rich indeed. The Nivea cream is also a favourite of mine and Max Factor’s powder is always present in my makeup bag :) x
I had a wonderful time working there! At the time the main piece in Marilyn’s room was the cardigan she wore in her last photo shoot in Santa Monica, 1962. I remember two bottles of red and one more pinkish nail varnish in her makeup case, I believe they were Cherries a la mode and Hot Coral. Sadly these are not sold anymore but they do still do a coral colour, which is the Revlon ‘enamel coral’ I think. x
That’s great! Good to know. I used Revlon nail varnish when I was younger but then Avon became my new favourite. Might check out some Revlon colours tomorrow :) x
I’ve been using Vaseline as a highlight since middle school! I started doing it after I read that’s what Marilyn used. My friends think I’m crazy but I always get compliments about how dewy my skin looks lol 😅
I loved your video..the history of Marilyn’s makeup in a video is such a great treat! Beautiful job researching it! She really took care of her skin, fantastic products! I wonder what she would be using today? Maybe that’s for another video..I’ll be watching! Love you and your channel! Thanks!! 💖🤗💕
Thanks so much for featuring Marilyn Monroe. It's almost cliched to have MM as a fave of the past, but I just love her. She's my fave of all the past Hollywood stars. Since I'm a new subscriber, I haven't gone through your videos yet. So if you haven't done Barbara Stanwyck or Bette Davis, I'd love to see both of these women on your channel in this series. Thank you!
I was using Maxfactor pan stick in 2000s when I started to university. My bestfriend was using that Max factor creme puff powder at that time. I remember an article in Harpers Bazaar about Marilyn Montroes makeup products in same era (2000s) and it was fascinating to know.
My mother used to have a powder compact that had a slot in the back where the hinge of compact was- and a coty 24 lipstick fit in it- i would love to find one of those
Shannon M. I had the Coty compact with hinge that had the lipstick in the back and the eye shadows on the inside. The packaging was a mauve pink color and so was the lipstick. I loved it!
When my mother-in-law died 23 years ago, she had that compact in her things. It was metal too and still has loose powder in it. She also had this cool little portable ashtray. It was small and round andmetal as well. The thing that made it so cool was it popped open and a little slender tray could turn over and hold your burning cigarette, and you used the compartment itself for your ashes and to put the cigarette out.
I use Vaseline on top of my moisturiser at night. It seals moisture into the skin . I also use it as a primer under foundation. You only need a small amount and creates a perfect base .
Love vintage and especially Marilyn Monroe! ❤ This was the first video of yours I've seen, and now I'm subscribed! Please consider doing a video on Sofia Loren and how she created such mesmerizing eyes with makeup and illusion. 💄💖
Fact: Marilyn had dry skin. So that's why she used very moisturizing products. Her go to lipsticks varied but she was in love with Guerlian's lipstick called "Insolence"; a deep ruby red that was rich in color yet moisturizing. It was expensive, but worth buying due to the color payoff.
I am a big Nivea fan. I have very dry skin and the thick cream is really good for my face. I love its fragrance too. In the 80s I used panstick but its not a matt finish which would contribute to her dewy look. Marilyn was such a natural beauty she would have looked amazing without any makeup.
My wife and I really love your videos and what a niche! We live to watch classic movies from the 1930's through the 1970's and it is so inspiring to see such a centered young woman with such great energy and total goodness vibes! Love the part that you shop with your Mom. I actually worked right across from the Chinese Theater (and lived behind it on N. Orange) in a club during the late 80's called Club Hollywood! Look forward to much more wonderful important history. Cheers from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
She's timeless. Every single picture of her looks like it could have been taken in the 60s,70s,80s,90s,2000s, now... everything she wore was timeless. Idk how she did it hahs i know she didnt like vintage and always wanted to create trends, not follow them but when she couldnt create them, she definitely followed them lol
I use the ponds cold creme to remove my makeup and Vaseline on my lips after i scrub my lips and also i use Vaseline on my feet. I like the cerave moisterizer for my face but heard also good things about nivea which I might try next because you can buy nivea with spf in it and they have a night creme as well. I started using Ernest in my 20s stopped in my 30s going back in my 60s l love it...my skin never felt or looked better..you only use a pea size it last forever..so the cream should last 3 to 4 months
There is a plastic surgeon/skin care specialist on u tube that says NEVER put Vaseline on your face! He says it clogs pores and does some other things I can’t remember His name is Dr Youn.
Duh he’s gonna say that 😂 he’s a plastic surgeon, there’s no money in a good face. Vaseline clogs pores on oily skin but it’s ridiculous to say “never” lol
Sorry people I was just passing on the opinion of someone that I thought was an expert. I used it on my face a year ago when my skin was dryer “winter” skin, and I did break out! They have you use Vaseline on burns to put a barrier between the burn and outside forces. To me it feels like your skin can’t breathe! If it is good for your skin-good for you!
Yes! Vas alone is great under make up. Makes me look dewy even before the “glass skin” look was trendy + also erno lazzlo is affordable on the Walmart website
@@sputniksweetheart5187 Well there is a lot more required to combating dry skin than just applying vaseline. Your skin barrier must be healthy. Using harsh soaps or taking hot showers and baths can dry out the skin. So can cold weather, and heating. Vaseline is an occlusive that acts as a barrier to hold in whatever moisture your skin has. It's a good idea to use a humectant, and an emolliant on top of that, and then you apply your occlusive to hold it all in. Using an oil by itself isn't very moisturizing either. If you get the chance there is a dermatologist on RUclips called Dr Dray. She'll tell you all you need to know. They all can provide different opinions. I went to a dermatologist that told me to only wash my face and not use a moisturizer because my face can moisturize itself. Which is not true at all besides my own sebum production, which doesn't count cause it's just oil. I'm sorry this is so long but I think Dr dray can really help you out. She has helped a lot of people.
Moana Das it forms a barrier so if you put it over moisturized skin it helps seal it in. even if you apply it while skin is just wet with water it helps seal in moisture. if you put it on clean dry skin it would keep skin from being moisturized.
Destiny Martin it forms a barrier so if you put it over moisturized skin it helps seal it in. even if you apply it while skin is just wet with water it helps seal in moisture. if you put it on clean dry skin it would keep skin from being moisturized.

My mother is originally from Germany. She has used Nivea all her life. Her mother and grandmother both used Nivea, too. I always bring her huge tubs of Nivea for her face and bottles of the body lotion. She uses Dove bar soap for her face and Avon's Youth Dew stick for her lips at night before bed. The Nivea cream is also a favourite of mine and Max Factor’s powder is always present in my makeup bag :) x
That’s so cool
You worked at a museum with all of her makeup and the famous makeup case. Do you know which Revlon shade she wore?
I had a wonderful time working there! At the time the main piece in Marilyn’s room was the cardigan she wore in her last photo shoot in Santa Monica, 1962.
I remember two bottles of red and one more pinkish nail varnish in her makeup case, I believe they were Cherries a la mode and Hot Coral. Sadly these are not sold anymore but they do still do a coral colour, which is the Revlon ‘enamel coral’ I think. x
That sounds amazing they do still sell cherries in the snow I just bought it at Walmart
That’s great! Good to know. I used Revlon nail varnish when I was younger but then Avon became my new favourite. Might check out some Revlon colours tomorrow :) x
Which Avon colours do you like I want to do a vintage Avon video
I’ve been using Vaseline as a highlight since middle school! I started doing it after I read that’s what Marilyn used. My friends think I’m crazy but I always get compliments about how dewy my skin looks lol 😅
This video is so soothing, it improved my mood dramatically
It would be fun to see you do a video on Jackie Kennedy!
She’s on my list ❤️
@@Laurajaneatelier Didn't she swear by almond oil?
Jaickis spent 250 dollars on a pair panties when she lived in the white house
Your voice is so calm, and soothing. It can take the stress away, and put you in such a relaxing state...
Yes. She has a very calming affect on me also.
My mother used to have a powder compact that had a slot in the back where the hinge of compact was- and a coty 24 lipstick fit in it- i would love to find one of those
Oh nice that sounds lovely, I find most of mine on eBay
Don't forget to follow me on Instagram and say hello:) instagram.com/dahliasintheattic/
Let me know if you have tried any of these products
Absolutely most of them
Love vintage and especially Marilyn Monroe!
She also used Listerine mint for her breath.
Thanks for letting me know
That's hygiene not beauty 😂
I do use vaseline as a primer, everyone tells me I look like I'm glowing when I do
Nivea is great cream for everything. I love it, I use it every day. ❤
Omg Brigitte Bardot please!!!
Ok sure I will look her up
I love your RUclips name! I'm just an old hippie girl. 🤣 Yes, Bridgette Bardot 😘
I love the doll on your nightstand! I used to have one just like it. I wish I still had it.
I haven't thought about Pan stick in years. I used that in high school 😁
I like the portable case and vintage design but I don’t think it’s my favourite foundation
me too!!
Rhiannan Caraway pan stick, backstage ballet nightmare. get pan stick on a costume and it won’t come out.
I still use it under eyes...
My grandma always 💕 always used ponds cold cream , till the day she passed her skin was soft and hardly any wrinkles , 🇺🇸😘
I need a good night cream, eye cream, and hylauronic acid.
Where has your channel been all my life? Love it! All things vintage forever!
Also, I believe she used the Besame cake mascara
Agree
Just discovered your channel. Lovely 😊
So glad you found me
Me 2🥰
Please do Joan Crawford's beauty must haves. She's an endorser of a lot of cosmetic brands during her time. Max Factor. She was one of the very first campaign model for Max Factor..
I just found your channel and I’m currently binge watching all your videos!! Idk how I’ve never watched your channel until now. Thank you for making such lovely content ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Chloe welcome to my channel so glad you found me
The Ruby Tuesday is one of my two red lipsticks and my absolute favourite one! I picked that colour because it reminds me Merilyn's lipstick shade and because i knew that Max Factor was a brand Merilyn used to use!
Can you do a video on Sophia Loren? Thanks!!
Yes she’s on my list! Thanks for watching
@@Laurajaneatelier and Brigite Bardot Pleasee ❤
@@bellaskg , Yes please Laura Jane! Shes so beautiful! 😘
I might be wrong but I think Marilyn wore the "N5 Parfum" which is the concentrate of the fragrance.
This was cute 💕😊 her and Dorothy Dandridge were friends but has such sad endings...both beautiful ladies 💕
Awe I know it really is sad. Thanks for watching
Ladies? Uh No! 2 MEN 100%!
@@Potaville Stop trolling
Canela Dorothy Dandridge would be a good one to do a makeup documentary on.
Omg i love the grapes in the background
You came up as suggested, glad I clicked on this. Definitely am interested in the Erno Lazlo. Hella expensive, but if it works, it works.
Diane Thompson yes he did but it doesn’t. Look it up on dermatological sites ( which that guy is not).
I just saw the video yesterday 😅 and I was thinking the same.
Duh he’s gonna say that 😂 he’s a plastic surgeon, there’s no money in a good face. Vaseline clogs pores on oily skin but it’s ridiculous to say “never” lol
vaseline is actually THE saving grace for people with neurodermitis as it acts as a barrier to keep the moisture locked in!
Laura, can you do a makeup pictorial of the favorite products of Gina Lola Brigida, Jaclyn Smith, and Stephanie Beacham
Can you please do one of these for Carmen Miranda and Cleopatra
I would love to see a video of what makeup Judy Garland used.
Alberto VO5 hairdressing ointment, was invented for Marilyn Monroe, because her hair was very dry from the blonde hair dye.
Yes! Vas alone is great under make up. Makes me look dewy even before the “glass skin” look was trendy + also erno lazzlo is affordable on the Walmart website
Betty Davis would be good! Love your channel ❤️
Bette Davis was a freak
I really don't like Vaseline as it's a petroleum by product!
It's an occlusive that holds moisture in very well!
@@sputniksweetheart5187 I am confused, do you think it repels or locks in moisture? 😮
I remember being able to buy Max Factor at the drugstore but not anymore where I am. It’s one I thought would always be around.
Wendy F Max Factor is still around but many stores go for other brands.
You can order on line...bit I had to order from UK...but it is there ...
They discontinued it in U.S. stores. You can find limited products online and they still sell it in stores overseas.
Your channel is AMAZING!!! so in love with all vintage things!! Thank you for the contents and your room is lovely!!! so obsessed with your vintage items Laura! Kisses and Thank you again!
Please do Audrey Hepburn. She is one of my favorites
Max Factors should bring their items back to the states. Their lip colors were so beautiful for everyone. Queen Monroe, was very pretty. Wow! Love the video 😍
Vaseline on top of eyeshadow gives a glossy eye look, just pat it onto the lid
Over? But won't it make everything slide all over the place?
M.M The most glamorous woman to have ever graced this earth ✨💋💄 still inspiring every woman today
I love my mother, obviously. She taught me how to do a wet set and brush out, so now I set her hair once a week like a 1960's hair salon. She's a duchess.😍 Any-hoo...
Oh wow I want to try this Avon youth dew, do they still sell it??
@@Laurajaneatelier I believe Avon still sells their Youth Dew. It's in a stick like chapstick. It's very cost effective at around $1 a stick. Mom's used it since the seventies.
Thanks for letting me know
Actually it's called dew kiss, and closer to $2
I think Youth Dew is a classic estee lauder fragrance though.
Thank you for making this wonderful video. Love Marilyn Monroe. God Bless 🌹🍃

Laura jane i am so happy that you are bringing the old good time back .The beauty of those time were very Simple but beautiful good job............😊☺🖒💟.
In the 60’s we used to put Vaseline on our eyelashes and I still do, and my lashes are still long and thick xx
Dad used to use Nivea to help keep the leather on his military boots from cracking. It really does work. My dad was USMC special forces in WWII, behind enemy lines. He needed to keep his boots in top condition, as getting replacements was impossible. I've used it also to repair dried out leather bags on ebay. It's cheapest at the 99 cents store.
Nivea what product?
Hi Laura. I've used a few but have used Nivea for many years. I think Marilyn also used Elizabeth Arden's 8 Hour Cream as well. I know what you mean about the Anita of Denmark website. Lol
Haha I know right?! I tried to link the website for this video but the server was down lol. I read on one website about the 8 hour cream but I want to save it for another video
8 hour cream is one of the best! Always wear it on my lips before a flight. Nails, elbows, etc.
I only just discovered your channel and watched your recent video about vintage beauty products still available today, your videos are so interesting. Thank you for sharing this with us x
Marilyn Monroe. Was so pretty.💋
My mother wore all of Max Factor products and the panstick foundation was her fave. Thank you for this video.
All my oily/combination girls be careful with Vaseline, it’s good for dry skin but Vaseline but clog pores for sensitive-oily-combo skin. Find what’s good for your skin not what’s good for someone else’s! Be careful :)
I have used nivea all my life! & as a teen all my makeup was max factor! I always used those foundation sticks. I was sad when they stopped selling them at drug stores
Wow what a rad idea! This was so cool to learn about 💋
Thanks so much for watching glad you enjoyed it
I'm in my early 50's and si mix a little vaseline with my foundation and apply to my skin. It works like magic. I get a healthy even coverage with a glow on my cheeks.
Cover girl is the sister brand for max factor in the US its essentially the same stuff in different packaging, maybe a few different ingredients deppending on h+s approval.
Smashbox is the brand, which is fab, that was started by the Factor sons. The makeup was created for the Smashbox studio. That Smashbox primer is the best. I can't believe that people actually would put Vaseline on their skin. It's petroleum based. Ffs.....
Ever since Lisa Eldridge's video about Marilyn Monroe, I wondered how was the Anita of Denmark foundation. Thanks for sharing your opinion on that!
Marilyn had a perfect quote--a newsman asked what she slept in--and she said Chanel No. 5!
Yes love that quote
Mary Loveless and it doesn’t smell good either 😒
She was also asked, what did she have on when she went to bed, and she answered, "The radio."
I just got back to using Nivea. The smell makes me think of my grandmother, not in a weird granny smell way but that she always had it in her bathroom and I loved the smell of it 🙂💜
OMG I had that same doll as a kid💖❤️oh and Nivea is my fav lotion.
That’s so neat you had the same doll
Wonderful video! There are so many movie stars from the past to consider like Loretta Young, Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Grace Kelly etc.
Thanks so much
@@Laurajaneatelier I would love to see one of these done on Rita Hayworth (if you haven't already that is). She was so talented and her look was vibrant and iconic. She rocked red like a Queen.
@@stellacoul Thanks for the suggestion! I find some celebrities easier than others. I have been researching a few people and I can't find anything about the beauty products they used
I've worked at the airport at the duty free and sold perfume and that resulted in me hating channel #5 A LOT. it's an iconic scent for sure but smelling it every day was too much.
I think it smells very old ladyish!
Nivea cream is fabulous. It's great as a moisturizer and it's also healing. During the summer months I experience chapped skin where the sweat accumulates. A generous application of the cream clears it up in no time!
Marilyn and Elizabeth Taylor would actually shave their faces for a smoother makeup application.
I thread entire face. Really youthens look and makeup glides on easily.
I do this sometimes. Foundation clings to my tiny face hairs and makes it look cakey. My makeup goes on so much smoother when I shave my face.
Marilyn did the opposite she literally put hormone cream on her face as she believed the studio lighting hit her face fuzz and made a glow. Google it
I was too scared to do this for many years and now I do and will never go back. What a difference it makes.
Aaron Kasér I was about to comment the same. She definitely was not a face shaver, you can literally see the peach fuzz in so many pictures.
