  • Merseytravel kindly invited me up to their Traction Maintenance Depot in Kirkdale, Liverpool to have a look at the new 'Triple 7' trains which have been delivered by Stadler and are now under test, and should be rolled out to the network soon.
The new units seems to have everything - walk through carriages, level boarding, modern colour displays, CCTV, flip up seats, accessible area, bike area, buggy area, charging points ... they might just be the best new trains being rolled out onto the network right now!
My thanks to David Powell and everyone at Merseytravel for getting us along for the day!

I always hear people complaining about these modern aventra style trains, saying they have no character or that they're just pieces of plastic, but then I see them or go on them and they're really cool - spacious, inculsive, accessible, just overall nice

Unfortunately the aventras/desiros aren't the most accessible trains, unlike the 745/755/777s made by Stadler, but one thing people tend to forget about all these new trains (versus older units) are the gangways! Always a huge improvement over old trains with narrow corridors and it's great to have such a wide range of new trains setting the standards for comfort

It's the appearence I think that is a problem, the overall functionality of the newer trains is cool though. I do like the 707s look. And the class 730, but some of the other designs are the newer trains just don't hit it off well. Only problem with class 700s and aventras..their motors are quiet and don't sound very nice haha . Admittedly class 745s and 755s have nice sounding traction motors. And so does the 331, but again , they aren't the most visually appealing to alot of people ..Well to me personally.

The batteries are being tested presently, with a range of around 20-25 miles... Therefore to return at the end of the line the train needs to either get back and go no further than 10-12 miles or recharge at the last station for (30 minutes?) before returning... A Class 777 did go on batteries all the way from Sand Hills to Stockport, but returned using third rail. Decisions have to be made concerning a safety factor, ten percent or whatever...

A lot of people in Ellesmere Port have to drive to Helsby, where there is limited parking, to travel to Manchester, being able to travel from the Port will be a boost.

    • @flyingpanhandle
      @flyingpanhandle 2 года назад +1

Im hoping more work is done on the battery stuff. You could really open the network and improve connectivity with just a smidge more range. Frequent trains from Southport to Wigan would open up connections to Manchester as even though Southport is the 6th busiest station in the NW, its connectivity to Manchester gets worse every year.
Or not even the batteries, these trains can use overhead power too. Opening up other Liverpool stations such as Edge Hill to bring them into the Merseyrail network would be great.
Really hope this is just the first part of Steve Rotherham et all to change transport in the city region.

As an American I am extremely jealous of British Rail cars! While there are great commuter cars in the Boston-New York-Washington corridor, the rest of the commuter trains in America are just New York style subway trains, designed to get the most people stuffed inside. BTW: Seeing as how the trains have such big windows in front, wouldn't it be nice if some passengers could sit there? I always thought that looking ahead was better then looking out the side windows! They could even charge extra for a special ticket!

But the exit doors and extra ladders at each end for ground or train to train access are a superb addition. Those info screens are a great addition too🤓
The wide connector doors make a huge difference I think, especially for disabled or ill people in an emergency. And there is something reassuring about it as it is less easy for a nasty type to isolate a victim!!! 😳

The 777's look great, I won't be sad to see the 507/508s go. I was gutted when the 503's went, there was something so homely about that old girl. Lovely floor heating that was appreciated on a winters day.

Absolutely agree, there was a point where the Northern had the 507 and Wirral had 503s so we took the one stop from Lime Street to Central just to ride the 503. Loved those 503s proper plush seats compared to the bone shaker 507/508s.

Looks alright, the only gripe is the seats seem to be following the modern pattern of being hard as a brick and impossible to get comfy in, looks like zero give in them.

I know they're aiming for flexibility but I don't like tip up seats for buggys (better a dedicated area) - on the old Thames links, there used to be tip up seats for cycles but even on a quiet train, people would sit on them but not want to vacate them for you on a bike - so you ended up blocking the doorways. People would get quite funny if you asked them to move even if they could easily go elsewhere. The CCTV is a great idea - hopefully the driver won't come back to the train jacked up on bricks 😂

Great video Geoff of these great looking new Merseyrail trains. Although I will probably say Boeing 777 when I actually mean the Class 777 and vice Versa because I mess things up like that. However it will be a shame to see the Class 507/508 PEPs go as they have been operating for so long.

Delighted to see the good accessibility options here. I am curious as to why a wheelchair or buggy user should have to raise the seats up to use the space, and not the other way round (i.e. seats sprung in the up position). Just curious. I'm sure there's a logic.

My only reservation is that the seats look to be very narrow, but I suppose on a very busy service being able to rest one cheek on a seat and have the other one hanging over the side, so to speak, is better than having to stand. Old Brunel had it right after all. We never would have had a problem making provision for wheel chair access if we'd have adopted his running gauge.

Interesting that they have 'wrist breaker' vertical grab rails. If people holding on fall over if there is emergency braking they have in the past broken their wrist on the adjacent one of the vertical poles. I can't remember what train they were tried on but they were removed.

Like the link between the TOPS code and Boeing. When Boeing launched the 777 it has significant design improvements in the cabin compared to it's long/mid haul predecessors. Much as though I'll miss 507/8's (especially the 508's which followed me northward when I left Surrey/South West London to Chester). They have served Merseyrail Electric ⚡ network well.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to ride Merseyrail someday. It's kind of a hybrid, on one hand, it's a commuter network, however, it has 3rd rail (atypical for the part of country it's in), and what's more...part of it is underground, in TUBE (but they don't say the T word there, do they?) (speaking of Tube, at one time part of what's now the Merseyrail network actually used LU-style 4-rail, but it was converted to 3-rail)
