  • Singapore's national anthem Majulah Singapura, national flag, and first head of state Yusof Ishak, have stood as symbols of the country's founding ideals - such as equality and multiculturalism - for the past 60 years.
When Singapore became self governing in 1959, it fell to Deputy Prime Minister Toh Chin Chye to design the flag, while a song by composer Zubir Said became the anthem. But what many don't know, is that the original idea for the flag had only 3 stars, and the anthem has seen several tweaks over the decades.
About the full show: On Dec 3, 1959, Singapore unveiled its new state symbols - the flag, crest and its first native head of state. We find out the inspirations and their relevance to Singaporeans 60 years on. #majulah

A surprising progressive at the time of his life, devoid of blatant communalism that hampered Malayan-Singaporean societies then at the past and a tough and honest journalist for the anti-colonial cause. Yusof Ishak is indeed charismatic and such men with equal stature are rare nowadays in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

His last moment of taking his final breath, i was with him in Medical Unit 2, Singapore General Hospital. He was breathing hard with the respirator. His chest was pumping 'up and down' gasping for oxygen. He was trying to tell me something but i stopped him telling him 'tak payah' and left the room. Few hours later, news came to my ears that he passed away peacefully. So, much so, each time i took out the SingDollar, reminded me of once in a lifetime moment with him. Each time passing by Kranji, my heart will say a prayer for him. Rest In Peace!

That Singaporeans will not be called by the races we look.
That we will not be spoken to in the language people think we know.
That we will not be called Malay, Chinese, Indian and Others.
    But instead be called Singaporeans.
    That is all.

Well said, our birth certificate is Singapore certificate. Just like my parents borned in China are called 'Chinese', people borned in Indonesia are called 'Indonesian'. Hence, people are identified by 'their country of birth'. If, not why keep that particular certificate for fun. Sensible? Think about it with peace with ourselves. Even, the unit currency used for that country too!

Malaya got Merdeka in 1957 with a new name Malaysia with the lowering of the Union Jack replaced with Malaysia national anthem Negara Ku and up went the Jalur Gemilang. The portray of Queen Elizabeth the Second was taken down from every classroom. The PAP appeared in the political scene in 1959 after defeating the Singapore Alliance Party under CM Lim Yew Hock. So, what is the national anthem and 'the crescent & 5stars' must come from somewhere of great significances. Well, this is how they played the 'wayang kulit'.

You know what, malaysian flag also supposed to be designed just like singapore and indonesia, where the so called "sang saka merah" flag was once a mighty symbol in this region.
But nooope, some guy just had to choose the brits indian company flag... And now, 60+ years, we are stucked with USA-like flag... One out of 3 nations which used that design...

The national flag for Indonesia's Independence in 1945 is 'Red & White' till today. The original Dutch flag is 'Red, White & Blue' The Blue strip was torned away for the Independence of Indonesia 1945. So, where did 'The Crescent & Five Stars' for Singapore's flag come from?
