The troll ult orange reminds me of the old troll ult, the one that let you cast it on enemies. that stuff could quickly put an enemy out of position or force a fight.

Can you tell me which particular patch this was in? The only thing i can recall since WCIII era is Jah'rakal's ability to empower his team's AS globally which then got reworked in Dota 2 patch 7.20

Has a cast range of 525, and lasts 3.25 seconds on enemy heroes.

You have to use your ultimate, whirling axes are very useful and not using them is dumb. You also have several activate items that you use. You're far from having just one button, especially once you consider that movement commands are also button presses. But, even ignoring all that- the fact that Troll does have *fewer* "net" number of decisions to make only means that each of those decisions is all the more important. A mistake on Troll means alot more than a mistake on any one of the generic "faceroll keyboard" type heroes. "Braindead" rightclickers like troll or most carries don't demand much mechanical skill, but they do demand far more tactical skill. You need to be intelligent with how you move, which targets you pick; and more importantly, *when* to engage or disengage. You have to constantly re-evaluate at every single moment of a fight whether or not you are going to win. Whether or not you need to disengage or back up- and you need to "see farther" than other heroes in this regard because you have fewer buttons: you have fewer tools for engaging or disengaging, fewer options. Its about as close as MOBAs can possibly get to what is called "Footsies" in fighting games. The scale of the decisions aren't much, but their importance and the speed at which you have to make them is intense and fundamentally critical for playing the game. And for no hero does it matter more than Troll- whose entire combat strategy basically revolves around Footsies.

i mean there's characters like pudge that have really good abilities and get like 60% of their power from their kit not the legendary so upgrading everything is actually good for them
Trolls legendary ult is actualyl very good- you just gotta understand what exactly it is doing. It's applying your ult to an enemy, sure- and on the surface that sounds really bad. *Give* your ult to an enemy? Why would you want to do that? Simple. Because Troll's Ult IS bad. Its terrible, really. Absolutely awful. You are basically taunting yourself for 4 seconds. Sure Troll likes to attack- but it also means that you are going in whether you like it or not. No items (though in this mode troll can undo that particular aspect), no casting axes or switching modes, no ability to disengage if you need to. You cant dodge or make plays. You literally just auto-right click the nearest enemy. Troll is just about the only hero who could maybe justify eating those downsides in exchange for attack speed. But literally anyone else? Never in a million years. Its the hardest counter possible to spellcasters. Anyone who relies on their abilities to win just loses to this ult shard unless they get immunity somehow (such as linkens or bkb). Even normal rightclickers can lose- because often times they need to dance around a bit, or stop attacking to avoid Blademail, or use their abilities to apply stuns, buffs, bonus damage, etc. It forces enemies who might be squirlley and make it tough for you actually fight them not just to sit still- but to actually come TOWARDS you- ie the IDEAL situation for Troll! Its only downside is that if you can't win the right click? If you're facing an opponent who does in fact want to manmode and fight you straight up? Well, using it on them is what they want... So just use it on yourself instead. Then win. Because that's what the normal use of that ult is for. There quite literally is no counter to it beyond just the typical anti-cast counters like linkens, lotus, and BKB. Dispels dont even work- because its considered a Buff. For that same reason, status resistance doesnt work either (otherwise troll's own status res would debuff his ult). Its actually just an amazing ultimate! Highly underrated
The problem is that using it on an enemy doesn't just have to be bad for them, it has to be worse for them than using it on yourself is. Getting a caster out of position for a little bit while buffing them significantly is just not as good as buying an abyssal or something and going sicko mode. Not to mention that unless the lobby is literally all casters, that part of the ability has a significant chance of being flavor text. The 30 second cooldown is really the worthwhile part of the legendary, just being able to ult, disengage, and then ult again, or use it to clear camps/patrols while still having it up for fighting, is enough on its own that it doesn't matter how good targeting enemy is. I still am not 100% sure it's better than the other options available though. I think the ability was in normal dota for a while, and it was probably better there because the nature of the map and 5 v 5 gameplay makes putting someone out of position way more punishing than it is in 1x6. I didn't play dota during that patch tho so couldn't say for sure.

@@smol4438 it was a few years ago. The aghanim's of Troll Warlord before the current one (or the one before that) enabled you to cast ulti on enemies.
Its a real thing for a while! I think its back when icefrog decided to give every hero an aghs upgrade certainly before aghs shard
