Met Kelly in Santa Monica @ the Quik store for a book signing in 08 and talked about F1 racing. A man with a variety of interests.Truly the greatest ever!
Surf in the morning, breakfast, then the best surprise for a Saturday. Thanks for getting Rob and now Kelly on the podcast. Can I swing for the fence and request Gerry Lopez?
Firewire Surfboards if you get him ask him why Kelly isn't a part of Patagonia. After listening to this I couldn't help think they'd be the perfect fit, so much alignment in their core values
funnygazman19 For sure, I work for Patagonia and hearing him talk was just like hearing any of our other ambassadors talk about why they're with the company.
Truth, it never occurred to me. Thanks for the Shred Show love. My life has changed a lot, and finding the time and creative space to make Shred Show type videos has been challenging. It will come, but can't say when.
Chris, I LOVE Shred Show and definitely hope you can somehow find the time to give us some more of your terrific board reviews!! That being said, you also have a SUPER GIFT as an interviewer!! I have binged today on this KS episode, Tomo, and Mark Price interviews and I must say they are all absolutely of the highest caliber fascinating interviews out there! The long form interview format is the best and I love the questions you come up with on the fly for example asking Kelly about his news cycle habits, or how you got deep with Tomo about how his inspirations for design or downloads as he calls them(awesome name for them IMO). So I’m rambling but I just want to say thanks and send you some encouragement in knowing that you’re terrific at this so I’m stoked for you! Keep em’ coming please! I guess that’s all. Have a great day!
Best interview ever!!!! Gonna adopt a better way of eating and healthier. One heck of an eye opener. Kelly is the best. 🌯🤘🏻🤘🏻🥗🥗🌊 One heck of a role model along with Rob Machado.
I had a near drowning experience on a typical head high day in Central Fl a few years ago, waves weren't big or anything but I took a weird wipeout and impacted hard and went down pretty deep for how small the surf was. Got the spin cycle for a few seconds but it never fully stopped. I initially started to panic but realized I must be stuck in a weird under toe or something so I relaxed and started counting. I think I counted to 10 the first time and tried to swim up but had zero luck. I was getting worried but still tried to stay calm, I then relaxed and counted to about 20 and could tell I was starting to really need to surface. It felt like someone or something was holding my ankles and would not let me swim to the surface. At this point I began to panic I had been underwater for 45 secs to a minute at this point. When I failed to come up I was freaking out having flashes in my mind but then all of a sudden I felt a really light euphoric high come over me and I wasn't panicking or worrying anymore, it was as if my mind knew it was over so it released all of my endorphins and I was very relaxed and hardly worried. I just remember in the euphoric haze I could tell I had one last shot of energy/oxygen to go for the surface or it was lights out. I took a couple huge strokes and I popped up. Not a wave breaking near me and I was 40 yards from the sand. My ear drums didn't pop and to this day I have no idea what happened, maybe my leash was wrapped around a branch or something. The point of all this is that I 100% felt a wave of euphoria when I was about to drown and that is the feeling that made me realize I was out of time and had to surface which saved my life. Was probably under for about 90 seconds
Love all the episodes! Any chance you could get an episode or part of an episode dedicated to talking about theories around different types of stringers and board flex characteristics? Keep the podcasts comin great work!
No, Chris - don't bring back the Shred Show! I mean, it was an awesome show. But it's great, you create something new and exciting like that - great interview! By the way: I'm always irritated about pros and industry guys talking about uncrowded surf and the good old days... You guys promote surfing and make your living (and beyond) by selling boards, trunks and stuff to many, many, many... Don't blame, what you've created!
That photo looks like it was taken at Palm Beach, Gold Coast, Australia......Awesome interview, would of been great to see the interview rather than hear it.
Obviously the content of your clothing is next level Kelly, but long term there is a big ?mark if it will succeed unless you plan on selling your company after a few years.. I've bought and sold companies, and your target market which seems like "most surfers, etc.., will not pay the kind of money your asking for your product in my humble opinion. Sustainability is very important, and I believe in it... But based on the pricing maybe your marketing should target an audience that has a household income of over 75k+ a year. Cause so far in the court of public opinion, everyone thinks, outside of your circle, that's your product is too expensive. I'll buy it, but even Rob Machado has said most surfers are "surf bums" - which means they can't afford your products for the long term.
Firewire Surfboards , yes I know and I wish him a speed and health recovery, God bless. Great audio KS is a great human been indeed & I'm a big fan, however I wondering if FW could not use any other surfer to review and surf the Gamma , Just an idea , maybe the good and old Shred Show to do a good review would be great ... ? Cheers
Funny how the conversation never got around to the million dollar question: Retirement! A total puff piece. Don't get me wrong KS is the GOAT and I'd love to see him chase down one more title but how can he with all the other distractions in his life.
Heaps of respect for your opinion John, need to gently disagree though - a puff piece would have been solely about the Gamma, KSWC, Outerknown, and Purps. But this conversation got into all sorts of deep and tangential stuff, like never before heard stories about Dane Reynolds and Bob Hurley. When it comes to retirement I don't think any of us are in a position to suggest it except Kelly, and when he does retire, I bet you he's still a legitimate threat at Pipe, Cloudbreak, and Chopes for years after he leaves the tour full time.... I think ACTUAL retirement is a long ways away.
this is rad! Heal up Kelly. Get back on that CT and teach the young guys what's up. Great job on the podcast to the both of you. Trump=SNL everyday. lol
Kelly, I've known you since you were a little kid growing up in the same area. We've surfed together, competed against each other, drank beers together, etc. and I'm still one of your biggest fans, however this nervous thing you do sucking your teeth before you answer a question drives me nuts and is prevalent during this interview. Are you aware of this? I'm OCD so it may just bother me but holy smokes it drives me nuts!
Probably the best KS Interview. Ever.
Aloha..great talk. Kelly the greatest. Hope to see him at trestles...I'll be the only black guy out there shredding

Yes you can. Thanks for suggesting him.
Firewire Surfboards if you get him ask him why Kelly isn't a part of Patagonia. After listening to this I couldn't help think they'd be the perfect fit, so much alignment in their core values
Good call. You would think Kelly would be interested in the Provisions side of Patagonia's business, too.
funnygazman19 For sure, I work for Patagonia and hearing him talk was just like hearing any of our other ambassadors talk about why they're with the company.
Ross Okagawa Awesome! Love Patagonia stuff. You are doing the planet proud.
Excellent podcast - Everything Kelly talks about resonates so well with me. A great interview is led by a great interviewer. Good job by both parties.
Agreed
Seriously the best Kelly interview. Awesome job, Chris!
We'll tell Chris!

What a classic guy. Great to hear Kelly tell his stories!
Amazing! Wish this could’ve been longer!

Caetano Kelly's foot injury is in the way at the moment. No surfing for the next several months.
Firewire Surfboards , yes I know and I wish him a speed and health recovery, God bless.
