  • I have managed to record myself in the onset of a sensory crisis, aka sensory overload induced meltdown. This video is intended to give context around sensory overload and allow other people dealing with sensory overload issues to relate and not feel alone.
Sensory overload can be terrifying experience when it happens and it is almost impossible for me to describe the feeling.
While I am in sensory crisis, I find it even difficult to speak and at times to regulate my breathing, but it is a natural process of the brain to clean out excess perception data to be able to bring the brain from an overload into manageable state.
If you have family members dealing with a sensory crisis, be assured, that while it may look disturbing from the outside, it is a natural process.
Unless they are causing physical harm to themselves or others, interrupting it or attempting to "calm them down", may be counter-productive.

Hey mate, thanks for filming yourself when you were this distressed. I have only just been diagnosed with ADHD and awaiting an Autism diagnose at 55, this helps and I thank you for it, I tend to avoid most social situations and I find them a bit too much, and it takes me days to recover. I subbed to offer my support for your courageous video. Thanks again from Australia.

a real life meltdown is a blessing and a opportunity for growth
your darkest moments are blessings so embrace them because they aid you

Thank you. I am not sure, I think of them as "dark" moments, per se, as I am not emotionally in a bad place, but simply overstimulated to the degree that my brain is unable to process any more information.
I do agree with your sentiment though and thanks for sharing.

      Hey Phil.
Thank you for sharing your personal moment with the world for keeping the world aware of the same. I can completely feel you here.
Yeah, as you said, no one is alone here. Every one of us is unique in our own ways and this world is meant for everyone.
I couldn't withstand watching till the end of this video, but got the point very clearly. It's so emotional. I feel you're a pure soul. Thank you for being yourself and being brave to release this footage even after a year.
I hope you enjoy your holiday time with family and friends.

    Hi Philip,
Thanks very much for sharing this very personal video. I'm a late aware of my autism person (awaiting diagnosis) also I'm not so self-aware in general I now realise. This made me think how I appear. Just in the last year several people (it was always women) have asked me am I "okay", so they have picked up on my behaviour demonstrating inner stresses. I've walked away early from many a social event. With regard to sensory overload, LED lights and visual trailing at night are too much for me and although I don't drive if I did I couldn't at night so in that respect my autism would be a "disability".

Thank you for sharing your story. Yes, in this case you get disabled by your environment. I have described the difference in this video.
