Serena Williams vs Venus Williams in their first Grand Slam final meeting! | US Open 2001 Final

  • The 2001 women's singles final was set to make history, even before Serena and Venus Williams found themselves across the net in the championship match. The sisters' first career Grand Slam final meeting - an iconic moment in itself - was doubly significant because it came in the US Open's first primetime women's final.
The Saturday evening showcase put the USTA's commitment to women's tennis on full display, offering a fitting stage for two women who would be at the forefront of the women's game in the U.S. and the world for the next two decades.
Despite their relative youth - Venus was 21 at the time, Serena, 19 - the two were already blockbuster attractions, with four Grand Slams between them. Serena's lone major title at the time came at the 1999 US Open, while Venus lifted the New York trophy in 2000, along with a pair of Wimbledon triumphs in 2000 and 2001.

Interesting that some players started to pick up on that and realised that with both Serena and Venus, the weakness in their movement wasn't running for shots, it was getting out of the way of them. If you watch some of Justine Henin's wins over Serena and Venus, a lot of the time she hits the ball hard and deep right down the middle of the court.

Venus did not have the consistency in her game to stay at the top as long. Serena has winning records against all the top 10 players over the past 20 years. Venus had losing records against most of them -- Sharapova, Davenport, Azarenka, Clijsters, and Kvitova for example.

Serena rarely loses to an opponent in finals more than once. Venus and Kerber are the only players who have beaten her 2x in a final. Serena would go on to beat Venus in their next 5 GS finals. It would be nearly 7 years before Venus prevails a second time in the 2008 Wimbledon final.
After the 2004 Wimbledon loss to Sharapova and a blip at the WTA finals, Serena NEVER loss again to Maria.

Oddly enough, the one weakness in her movement was actually getting out of the way of the ball. Players like Justine Henin started to pick up on that and would start hitting the ball hard and deep down the middle of the court. Both Venus and Serena could struggle with that at times. They were amazing at running down shots, but not at making those tiny adjustments close up. Perhaps it illustrates the difference between speed and footwork. Both sisters had amazing speed, but their footwork wasn't in that same class.

I've said this a million times. If you are a hardcore Venus fan like me, and you have analyzed her game throughout the years. I personally think a lot of the matches that Serena has won against Venus. Venus just flat-out let her win, because she knows it means so much to Serena and she loves her so much. Whenever Venus really wants to beat Serena I think she can beat her easily, whenever she feels like it. The proof is in the pudding. Just look at how often she used to beat her in the beginning of their careers. I'm not saying I'm right. That's just my personal opinion, but I highly do think I'm right.

Venus doesn’t go for the kill when she plays Serena , which is bad because Serena is so good , you have to be willing to go for the jugular against Serena . And Venus just doesn’t have it in her to do so .

Especially before she got sick and her disability caught up with her. She just doesn't unleash it on Serena, because she loves her, and she knows how much winning means to Serena. So I feel she just lets her win.

I mean don't get me wrong Venus loves to win too, she's a competitor, but it has been said multiple times that winning means a lot more to Serena. That's why I feel Venus lets her win a lot of the time. I'm not saying Serena just flat-out can't beat her, but I think that a lot of her wins came from Venus just letting her have it.

I hope Serena can get #24. Coronavirus has postponed the French Open and probably Wimbledon. At 38, time is her biggest enemy right now.

For a first time all Williams final, best points 32:53 33:53 42:02 44:16 48:08. Quality wasn't there and all the best points came in the last 30 minutes of the match! Serena played so loose hitting the net, hitting out and double faulting. Venus cool as usual. 😎

Interesting to note that as brilliant movers as these two were, their footwork wasn't in the same class. It often resulted in errors or weaker shots when rapid foot adjustments were needed. Players like Justine Henin started to pick up on that and started hitting the ball hard and deep down the middle of the court, because both sisters weren't quite as strong when getting out of the way of the ball. Both of them absolutely brilliant though when sprinting.

Well.....Venus footwork led to 7 Grand Slams, 49 career titles and $42,000,000 prize money.
Serena's footwork led to 23 Grand Slams, 73 career titles and $94,000,000 career prize money.
Henin's footwork led to 7 Grand Slams, 43 career titles and $20,000,000 prize money.
Venus and Henin head to head record is Venus (7) - Henin (2).
Serena and Henin head to head is Serena (8) - Henin (6)

Strangely, both Venus and Serena had one relative weakness in their movement and that was getting out of the way of the ball when it was hit at them. Players like Justine Henin started to realise that and started hitting the ball hard and deep down the middle. Both sisters could struggle with that at times. I guess it illustrates the difference between speed and footwork. Both sisters had amazing speed at running down shots, but didn't have the fine footwork that's needed to make very rapid adjustments to get in position when the ball is up close.

This was Venus's 4th Slam, and Serena held 1 Slam at that time, then they met in 4 consecutive Slam finals. (Serena completing the Serena slam) I always wondered how that would have changed the William sisters dynamic if Venus had won those 4 consecutive slams....that would have put her 8 slams to Serena's 1 Slam. I guess we will never know...lol
