CORRECTION! You can use any XLR mic with the Heil mic or W2ENY connecting cable WITHOUT a preamp! The mic will make a HUGE improvement to your sound! Especially in the Electrovoice products.
Important note: at 21:17 and 22:46 seconds into the video I mentioned that you need a “1/8 inch jack out” that should have said “1/4 inch jack input.“ for the pre amp. The preamp should have a 1/4” input jack to supply power for the microphone to power the microphone to go to your radio so you can use it.
Ham Radio Live! Show 94 brings six different studio mics to let you hear the difference in sound from each of them.
Featured are the Shure SM 57, Beta 57A, 55, Super 55 as well as the Electrovoice RE 320 and RE 20.
All of these microphones are featured using only the preamp however I do add some processing and equalization to the RE 320 and RE 20 to show how they can become much more powerful with processing.
The goal of the channel is to help get people licensed and on the air!
I also try and help those with licenses to learn about real product reviews of ham radio gear and accessories.

    Larry,
As someone who used to work in broadcast, I’ve been thinking of adding an EV to my setup for some time now. I’ve watched quite a few videos on microphones in ham radio, but nothing comes close to this video.
This is the best video on using high-end microphones in ham radio on RUclips. Very, very well done! Thank you for clearing up nearly every question I had.
Keep the great content coming! I look forward to working you from my QTH just over the hill from you in Salem.
    73!

Wow, thank you for the exceptionally kind compliment. I really appreciate it. I finally was able to purchase the RE 27. I’m truly looking forward to seeing how that sounds. I’m probably going to get rid of at least one of the EV mics I have. Probably the 20. I don’t need all three LOL!
I’m interested to see how it sounds between it and to 320. I’ll do a show featuring all three to give you a good idea of what they sound like running flat and with some processing. That show will probably come out sometime right around Christmas. I hope it helps you my friend!
Thank you again for the kind comments. Man that meant a lot to hear tonight!

Important: you do not need a preamp to use an XLR microphone into your rig. Use the proper heil microphone cable or the one from W2ENY. It’s plug and play. Have fun.

I have a Shure 55 from to early 1960s, which my grandfather purchased then to use with a Crown tape recorder. The frequency response of the old 55 is definitely much worse than the new ones. I use an AKG P220.

Phantom power (which is 9 to 48vdc) is only to power the preamp built in the mic. You generally don't need an external preamp, just a phantom power injector.
You may need a preamp, depending upon your radio. Most do not.
You DO need a special cable for some radios, such as the Icom 7300 which expect an electret condenser mic and provide ~3vdc phantom for a hand mic. This low voltage is not sufficient for a pro Mic that needs "pro" 9-48vdc phantom power. These cables block the 3vdc from the radio.

He sure does and he has the pipes for that mic. No question about it. The RE 20 has been around for a long time in radio.

Thanks. I appreciate the effort. Not sure however how hearing a studio level mic over a you tube broadcast is a practical test for how a mic will sound over the airwaves.

You can hear the difference in frequency response so you can make an informed decision based on the tonal character of your voice. The youtube broadcast also helps you see which one you like visually. Did that help, buddy?

Re-20 for me. Just love the sound of that mike but the 380 is no slouch. Just my personal preference. Would love to be able to try those out on my voice to see if I still like the re 20. I miss my shure sm 7b I had. I would take any of those.
