2014 Idaho ATV Loop

- This was a 500 mile loop on ATVs starting and ending at Lochsa Lodge in Central Idaho. This route travels forest roads North along the Idaho - Montana border to Avery and loops back down to the Lolo Trail. It follows the Lolo Trail East back to Lochsa Lodge.
What a great adventure in some beautiful country! You did a great job putting this video together. I especially like that FabCraft trailer. Thanks for showcasing the safe and responsible use of ATVs!
I still don't understand why people have music playing when making these video's. I would rather hear the wind and the sound of the ATV's instead of bad music. Thank God for the mute button. Good video though.
was hoping to hear the sounds of nature and sounds of getting there also --- everybody wants to be a rock star -- even if this stupid way is the only way to fantasize about it being so -- childish -- is what it is -- haha --
Agreed, and why is always louder than the voices of people? Lot of us have to miss the video because of the music. It would be different if it was at a lower volume.
I agree! Voice over narration would also improve it greatly.
This is a montage of short clips and still shots. Having music over it makes sense. The great thing about RUclips is that you can make your own videos your own way. Go live your own adventure, film it, edit it, and publish it your way.

My father and his brothers used to hunt that area on the lolo trail for elk. I have pictures of me standing next to the sign about Lewis and Clark. I have hunted all over that area. Brings back lots of good memories. Thanks for sharing.

I grew up in those mountains. Its so sad to see that the wildlife has declined so drastically. 35 years ago there was a deer around every bend and elk on every other mountain.
I totally agree. I grew up there also and it was the same. Abundant big game throughout that area. The decline was predicted and ignored.
On this trip we saw a Moose and her calf. When chatting with a Fish and Game officer the next day, he was very excited and wanted to know where. Even he had not seen any young moose survive for long. I fear that it will never be the same again.

Great video! I am planning on doing a 1600 miler through parts of Idaho, Nevada and Utah next year pulling a trailer and I got to see a sneek peak of some of the areas I will be traveling through in your video. Looking forward to seeing more in the future!

Hello Andy I made that trip last year except our start and finish was located at French Mt Saddle. We took six days to do it. Should I do that again I’ll take seven days to allow for a little more R&R. I ride a Polaris 850 and pull a ATV Wagon 1600AL loaded with about 1200 lbs. Great video, never quit riding.
That's great. There's a lot of wonderful country to see in that area. I'm with you on the extra day and more R&R. Setting up a new camp every night and packing it up every morning makes you get efficient but it's still a bit of a chore. My next ride will likely stay 2 nights at most camps and make a little day side trips and campfire time on the off day. Sounds like you're doing it right!

I have 3 GPS units partially because I value redundancy when out there, but primarily because the Garmin 276C has a big display that's easy to read while you ride, the Rhino is also a 2 way radio to talk to the others in my group and see where they are, and the inReach Explorer is my satellite communicator.

This trip was July 26th to August 1st. Only hit one remnant of a snow drift up high and very warm (100+) down low.

Mine are 700efi. Pulling the loaded trailer on these roads seems to average about 20 to 25 mpg. I carry 20 gallons of fuel on the trailer (two 5 gal cans and four 2.5 gal cans). I usually have one trailer for two quads. A few years ago I did a 900 mile loop around the Frank Church wilderness area. We had plenty of fuel starting in McCall and going to town for fuel in Challis, Darby Mt, and Elk City.
I have a 2019 rzr 900 EPS 50" Trail. I'm lucky to average 12 mpg. Unless I'm in low 4x4 than its worse!
Excellent video, I have ridden ADV bike through some of that area and looking to explore more. Do you have the .KML file for your route that you would care to share? I've been considering creating a loop and you have already done that! Thanks

Andy, This trip sounds like something that I would like to take. However I have a couple of questions.My 2013 Polaris is only a 400 and it has a carburetor.Would I need to have it rejetted to deal with the elevation?I am 62 years old and in good health. My Polaris has less than 400 miles on it.I am thinking about purchasing one of these single axle trailers.Does the 400 have enough muscle to make a trip like this while pulling a trailer like this? I think a 400 would be just fine. You will load the trailer accordingly and likely not need to carry as much fuel. You want to run slow to enjoy the scenery and a 400 should have more than enough for that.
Non fuel injected should be fine as well. It may run a little rich at elevation with stock jetting but I wouldn't worry. I've been through that on carburated motorcycle and only noticed a little on idle. This loop isn't extremely high either.
Andy,Thank you for the reply. A trip like this is now on my bucket list. As to the pace, I like to drive at a slower pace.I am able to absorb more scenery and enjoy my surroundings. How does this work. I do not want to go solo.Do you have a get together and make a date to see who wants to make a trip?Anyway if you would like to see a video of my Texas rides simply go to Kenskip1. I am going to make a trip as mentioned but it will be in about a year from now.Medical issues are what is stopping me from mounting up. Thanks, Ken

Where can I get details about this trial? What is the trail width?
This route is all National Forest Roads. You can and likely will meet pickup trucks and jeeps along the route. This route could be done in a Jeep or pickup. The Lolo Trail (Lolo Motorway) also has a Forest Road number (FR500 for some of it) and can be driven in a truck or SUV. Info can be found on maps of the national forest. The North section is in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest with the Southern portion of this route in the Nez Pierce National Forest. You can view maps and buy maps on line or call one of the ranger district offices.

These trailers are built by Fabcraft in Western Montana ( www.fabcraft.com ). They really make multi day trips easy. I can carry 20 gallons of gas, all my water, cooler, tent and gear in the trailer taking much of the weight off the quad. There are a number of accessories you can get that make camping even more convenient on the above website. If you email "fabcraft@fabcraft.com" , Mike will send you the current info and price sheet.

I love the trailer. Maybe my next trip I will do more of a write up about it. For full disclosure, while I did pay for my trailer, my brother-in-law builds them.

Nice trip, hello from Canada, i liked your trailer, what type of gps you were using please ?, nice video but the music is strong.
I know, I will be doing music differently in the future. I used a Garmin 276C, a Garmin Rino, and my satellite tracker with phone. I don't use the 276C for much of anything anymore and use my satellite inReach tracker coupled to my phone Earthmate app almost exclusively. I still use the Rino because I can use it to see where others in my group are if they have a Rino and since it's a 2 way radio, we use it for that.
What county is this is? I was raised in boundary and will be moving back relativley soon
Lucky for you to get to move back! I was raised in Bonneville county. This ride covered 3 counties, Idaho county, Clearwater county, and Shoshone county. I should be riding through Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry this summer if plans work out.

Yes, this trip you could take a Jeep or similar on all of the roads.

Hey, sorry I missed this reply. Not intentional. I did the trip for fun with family so I have the video, tons of pictures, and the GPS track log file in .gpx format. There are a lot of great sights and places worth visiting on these trips but it depends a lot on your interests (climbing inside the big cedar tree was awesome).

We planned on 6 days which was about right for easy relaxed riding. We were back to Lochsa Lodge by lunch on the 6th day.

How big were your quads?
My quads are 700cc. It's more than needed for this kind of trail. When going slow like this, I expect that a 400 or 500 would be fine (and use less fuel). If buying another quad, I would still get the 700 but if I had a smaller one, I sure wouldn't miss out on a ride because of it.

I can't disagree. Royalty free music they will let you post its...well, you get what you pay for. Maybe I'll just have someone narrate all the flame comments about the music rather than play music.

Yes indeed. Dislike of the music was by far the most common comment topic other than asking for the track log. It was my first post to RUclips and first background trademark music experience. I'm considering taking the raw clips and making another version but would be more fun to do the trip over again. Cinematographer I am clearly not.
