LoP was amazing but it’s always a bit of a tricky topic comparing contemporary games to older titles especially when those old games provide the entire foundation for the new. I mean, the games should be getting better right? But for whatever things P does better (and some things it definitely does) it will never capture that same feeling I had on my first trips through Bolataria and Lordran simply because it is ultimately derivative. Amazing but derivative.

For me, it has surpassed Dark Souls in many ways, but has also not quite lived up to it in many ways.
Its a bit too linear to catch the wonderment of DS1 Lordran, which to this day, is one of my favorite video game worlds every made and feels more like a real world than most modern open world games. It also uses the "enemy hiding behind the corner" trick WAAAAY too much. And its last area drags on a bit too much for my tastes. BUT!!!
Its combat and mini-boss/boss design are second to NONE imo. Story is straight forward. It also, SHOCK, runs at arbitrary framerates (I ran at 144hz, not even supposedly modern Elden Ring ran at more than 60hz without a multiplayer breaking mod) and is VERY WELL optimized (makes combat fluidity even better!). And it feels like the first TRUE high level, modern souls-like experience! Fromsoft could learn a thing or two.
And this is their first outing?! Outstanding! Can't wait for the DLC and sequel!

I have been enjoying Lies of P but it's not as good as Dark Souls 1.
It's exploration was a bit more lacking. Character builds are more limited. It's combat is a bit lacking in certain areas and it suffers from artificial difficulty. The game clearly pushes towards aggressive play styles but then certain attacks require you to just run away which ruins the flow of combat. Bosses can be a bit spongey. Random difficulty spikes. Repetitive encounters that all play out similarly and they will all be 1 after the other.
But the things I liked was the grinding wheel is cool. And it has icons next to areas on the fast travel list showing you if you need to talk to someone or something. The story is easier to follow then Dark Souls. The training area next to the weapon shop. The parrying with chip damage is cool. The lock on icon changes for back stabbing.
I can look past it's flaws because it's this companies first big game. Hopefully in their next title they will be able to fine tune everything. It's not like From Softwares 1st souls games didn't have problems. Demon Souls has a spell that you can move at full speed while casting allowing every encounter to be cheesed. Dark souls 1 Dark bead and mannis catalyst...

I started my Souls journey back in 2009 when the only option to buy the game was to import the Asian version. I used my friend's dad's credit card to buy my very first imported item ever... Demon's Souls.
Since then Dark Souls came out, was my favorite game of all time.
Dark Souls 2 came out, was a disappointing yet decent game, I ran PvP arenas in that one, probably the best PvP experience I had in any of the Souls games.
Bloodborne came out, by far was my favorite game of all time. Still is.
Dark Souls 3, the most polished Souls game, a very solid experience that's probably even better than DS1, yet it felt more of the same and too reminiscent of DS1. This feeling was amplified especially after Bloodborne which was a wholly unique experience.
Sekiro, not the biggest fan but still a really good game, final boss Ashina was my favorite boss fight of all time from any game.
Elden Ring came out, 2nd place to only Bloodborne for me as the best games of all time. Elden Ring sometimes even feels like it should be my all time favorite, but Bloodborne edges it out only due to the combat style, speed, eldritch theme and player movement.
Then many many Soulslikes over the years, during those releases, in between. If I only consider true 3D soulslikes, none came close to From Soft for me.
Then came Lies of P. For the first time, in 15 years of Souls, the impossible happened. A game that ranks up there with the very best. I had some high expectations after the demo, but the final product blew me away. It's not perfect, I would have liked more exploration and secrets, but for this dev's first foray into Souls, this is a perfect start.
I still believe Bloodborne and Elden Ring are the better games, and Dark Souls 1 as a whole was a more memorable experience, but I enjoyed Lies of P more than Dark Souls 2, 3 and Demon's Souls...
    My current rankings:
    Bloodborne
    Elden Ring
    Dark Souls 1
    Lies of P
    Dark Souls 3
    Sekiro
    Demon's Souls
    Dark Souls 2
P.S. as an avid DJMax fan for the past 17 years, hearing somber versions of those familiar tunes in Lies of P was another thing that added to the experience.

      @Nephske Месяц назад

      Uhh… 5D? 😅
We can only observe and experience 3 dimensions, 4 if you’re counting time.
Since it’s a video game, it is possible to have 4D representation and interactions within them other than time, such as removing items from a lockbox without opening the box (which is something most people wouldn’t immediately perceive as 4th dimensional)
With all that being said, you could make an argument that s are 4th dimensional movement since you’re passing through physical matter in a 3 dimensional world without being affected by it.
Regardless of whether or not you consider the s to take place in a 4th dimension, the object in which you are dodge rolling or parrying take place in the same 3 dimensions. Hitboxes in souls games are represented with spheres, which are 3 dimensional. As a matter of fact, if the perfect guard collision point in an attack animation literally existed in only 1D it would actually be significantly harder to hit consistently.

10:15 While I do agree with this to some extent, I personally find DS engaging because the gear-locking system pushes me out of playing just the knight class, which is basically the best class in the games.
Also, I've found that DS mainly encourages me to experiment by challenging me to switch things up, not because I NEED to in order to beat a boss or something, but because I WANT to simply to prove to myself that I CAN. Its very much an internal/intrinsic motivation, rather than external/extrinsic. Definitely not for everyone.
For example, after clearing Smouldering Lake (IIRC) with my knight in DS3, I completely stopped all progress to restart with every other class with the primary goal of seeing how far I could get with each class following the "proper" playstyle of each class. With the exception of the Deprived, which I played with zero armor, I usually made it to The Road of Sacrifice before I got frustrated, or in most cases, a bit bored (can't say DS3 is a game in which I enjoy playing the same six exact levels ten times in a row, tbh entirely my fault lmao), and promptly switched to a new character/class.
It was overall, super fun, and it really culminated in my Deprived, when I killed Ludex Gundyr first try (I don't no-life games, so while I didn't expect Ludex to be hard, I also didn't anticipate one-timing him). Cleric was probably my least favorite, although I will say that magic in general, while powerful, feels way too janky and lacking fluidity compared to melee combat.
Frankly, there's something fun about being able to beat the game with the same gear I spawned with at the start (as a knight, the other classes I wielded more varied armories). The only thing I did find annoying (and something I hate in other games too), is when I would come across a new weapon that was just straight-up worse due to my sword being +6ed. making materials less grindy would fix that, because otherwise I don't feel comfortable just tossing materials to Andre to +6 a weapon I don't even know is good/bad yet.

I assume you're referring to me saying knight is the "best" class, as to which I will simply say, it is the easiest and simplest class. "Best" can mean many different things, but as far as ease and simplicity go, knight is by far the "best"

@@Ghorda9 I assume you're referencing me getting frustrated around the Road of Sacrifice, in which case yes it was the Crystal Sage that was the issue. Its not so much that he's difficult in general (as you mentioned, throwing knives makes it quite easy), but rather that playing a class "as intended" or "the proper way" (aka: role-playing) puts (self-inflicted) restrictions like not using throwing knives/weapons, which makes the fight way tougher. That being said, I also usually had found my groove by that point and wanted to mix it up again for fun, so I would switch. The difficulty of Crystal Sage with no throwing knives just hastened that a bit.

This game pulls much more from Bloodborne, and some of the ways you think Lies of P improved upon Dark Souls are actually taken 1:1 from Bloodborne. I wonder if it would have been a better idea to review the game independently, without the comparison, given that you seemingly haven't played Fromsoft's more recent titles. Anyway, as excellent as I'm sure this game is, in all the footage and talk about it it seems to be missing the certain something that draws me to Fromsoft's worlds. It's really the main reason I care about their soulslikes, the worlds. I suppose it's down to a personal preference for the sort of obscure, melancholic, dying and hopeless places.

For a lot of the enemies and bosses the attack telegraph is actually really good but for bosses like Simon Manus hes too big, and he takes up a lot of the screen so you can't see him begin his attack animation because its slightly off screen, and for bosses like Luxasia the Complete and The Nameless Puppet, they have zero telegraphs for some of their attacks like the one where the puppet dashes forward instantly or the first attack of Luxasia. Most of the time you just have to die to it enough to have the muscle memory to be able to parry it which isn't very intuitive. Overall great video that I mostly agree with though.

That in the game nonstop and then go to fight over and over despite that is the hope that you bring to the story I like that more I like the idea that as long as you keep going there’s hope. the game doesn’t have any hope I am the hope. I love LoP but for me the complexity of the different options of Dark Souls is what gives it the edge for me. You can play Dark Souls so many different ways. LoP forces you to play by a smaller set of rules. This made my following playthrough’s feel dull and repetitive, the story is what kept me going. Also I wish there was more elite enemies like Black Knights of DS, they either give you drunken mobs, or mini bosses that are fun but don’t respawn so the challenge is fully on the shoulders of a few bosses. And these bosses while awesome in every way, feel like they were designed just to punish souls players. Delays, status effects, and very small punish windows. DS3 has the best bosses of any game for me, challenging yet it still feels like I’m playing a game instead of fighting a dev. I thoroughly love it but imo it’s not better, it’s maybe equal with all things considered, and DS3 is 8 years old

There is very little to add to your excellent review, aside from the emotional investment in Lies of P, for example, finally being able to hug Spring the cat felt like a vanquished hidden boss or the conversations with the broken puppet in the Swamp chapter.
It was as if Round8 sat down at the early design stages and said "How can we improve on the dodge hit dodge game play and the unnecessarily over convoluted side quests of Souls games?"
Lies of P also goes down as the most overlooked title from 2023, which illustrates the hollowness of awards and how the gaming world just couldn't get their heads round how a maiden voyage game could be so good. There has always been more than a touch of unwarranted elitism among Souls players and Lies of P just raised the bar considerably for the genre.

Demon souls had the best lore as it made very true and novel statements about human nature in a game.

Everyone hates dark souls 2 cause they look back on it- Monday morning quarterback so to speak. Realize that demon souls wasn’t a blockbuster yet dark souls was and kind of did the same thing. At this point, in 2009, was souls an rpg or action game? Are people having more fun using the right items/weapon and careful movement to beat a boss or their combat skills? It would turn out that people liked the combat more- the satisfying feeling of beating the game with boss gameplay while staying at level one. But when dark souls 2 was made, it was unclear what dark souls was. And look at fromsoft’s history here- namely kingsfield, which was 100% rpg and would never be considered souls like action gameplay so to speak. If you approach dark souls 2, minus the dlc lol, as an rpg, you’ll enjoy it more and, perhaps, appreciate it. Though it certainly isn’t my favorite
