- Hello everyone. Most videos are still down on this channel because i'm currently appealing a strike. But I made this and got sick of waiting with the finished product.

At least you totally, intentionally, designed the top of the cell to open up and relieve pressure in case of pressure build up, instead of rupturing violently and spilling the yellow everywhere. definitely could have been worse.

I used to make kg quantities of KCl04 during the winter at my farm. I ran two 3.8L cells at a time using a beefy HP power supply with Pt-wire anodes and stainless cathodes. Started with Na then did displacement with KCl. Used winter weather to do the recrystallization and make a very nicely pure product. Gases vented out the window of the shed. I maintained pH with HCl every couple of days. Still have, 16 years later, much of what I produced.
Uhhh yeah thats a lot. I just make about 100g at a time, never anymore than i can use immediately usebecause i just dont want it sitting around. With my luck a mouse or something might decide to make a nest in it using paper it dragged over drain cleaner.

also the chlorine gas is a strong oxidizer
The grey is probably from titanium or mixed metal oxide particles anode damage from running the cell on low NaCl. It cleans up alright. Too bad about the anode though. Those things are so useful. Perhaps you could bend a kind of hook for the end and crimp it back on.
Thats what I was thinking.. Just kinda bend it in and out of the gaps on the anode. then secure it somehow... without aluminum foil... lol

You can set off a hydrogen chlorine explosion with just UV light. Maybe the sun exploded it.
Speaking as someone who learned this first hand, methane and chlorine will ignite from overhead fluorescent lights in a classroom. Also, it is a GREAT way to get the attention of the entire class.

Chlorate optimal voltage production is 3.3 volts, and over 5-6 volts you are passivating the mmo/titatium electrode. They also can't be in the solution without current for extended periods of time. The spot weld wire seems problematic, you should get bolted contacts directly on the electrodes. For better results titanium nuts and bolt. Cheaper but still someone decent using stainless. If you really are strapped for cash, you can use steel bolts and nut
And where you can get titanium nut, bolt and washer?

I stopped trying to make my cell airtight. The chlorine, hot salty alkaline water and heat destroyed all my apptempts to seal it. Instead, it is really important to insulate the electrical connections. Instead I just put a Compact Disc on top and some napkins. When let run without pH control, the cell quickly becomes alkaline and no more gaseous chlorine is produced. In my case the chlorine evolution dropped below nassal treshold in about half an hour.

Thanks, that's my phone camera actually, what I filmed the whole video with. The slow motion works well if the subject i'm filming is really bright, so it captures the bright chlorate really well I agree!

Ay man, I know I'm 3 years late but tin and lead are fairly resistant to corrosion, you *could* have sodered the electrode back together after all. I mean, it would be far from ideal considering that all of the electrode gets wet from capillary action and evaporation so it would costantly be in contact with oxidizing agents while being under tension, but better than aluminiuminum I guess.

Not bad, it did work at least. it's a shame that the electrode corroded so easily. I was rough on mine and no problems. Well, except the time I hooked them up backwards... It ate ~1/4 of the bare plate off, lots of fluffy pink flocculent clouding the jar... Cool pattern though. It always bleached my litmus paper, made that difficult.
Making a tack on MOT spot welder with 1-1/2 turns on secondary, about a second works pretty good. TIG would be good too, the electrode shaft is actually Ti welding wire off eBay years back. Wish I had bought more when I did, using it for years.

So, how careful do I have to be with chlorates regarding poisoning.. Can I get a significantly big dose just by touching it with my fingers, or do I have to consume that stuff in order to get a harmful/deadly dose?
i don't think you should be that careful. I've been tasting drops of the liquid in my cell and dipping my fingers in it for weeks 😂 i know its stupid but i don't really care+ nothing has happened to me yet💀

Can't one use anything cheap for the electrodes? Especially the MMO anode seems to be pretty expensive.

Late to the party here but I'll comment anyway.
It's a question of how you define expensive. Yes, MMO costs more than a carbon rod for a single run. The whole value proposition changes when you consider how long each type lasts - you can spend a whole lot by eating through the cheaper option and having to keep replacing.
That bodged connection with the aluminium could've maybe worked if you insulated it properly, why you didn't I don't understand. Would've been easy to get an airtight seal with some resin glue for example. Otherwise great stuff mate

I am 100% sure that you've got some sodium perchlorate in there with some chlorate contamination, because sodium chlorate wouldn't precicipitate out. If you have an old microwave around or a transformer, you could build your own spotwelder and fix those electrodes (maybe make a video about it...) or you could try and make a Lead dioxide anode, even though it is quite a hard task. look on some threads on APC or sciencemadness. alternatively you could try and harvest some platinum from a car and use that as anode for example or try and make your own mno2 anodes. Or you could buy mmo or LD anodes from here: store.theamateurchemist.com/ but don't try the Pt ones, they are poor quality as i've heard in the past (might be a hoax) also check this site www.chlorates.exrockets.com/chlorate.html
Yes, sodium chlorate would precipitate out. I do not think that with this low current and time, but if you keep topping up your cell with water and fresh salt, then it will eventually start to precipitate. This is also a convinient process to exract sodium chlorate.
You could just bend the handle around the top of the mesh & pinch it closed to hold the mesh. Yeah, I know, the video's old, but 🤷♂️
probably wouldn't last for long. if any cl gas or liquid gets in the gap it will oxidise the titanium and current flow will stop
What about the dichromates? Can you reduce it using sodium thiosulfite?

I created a cell of anode (positive) mmo, and cathode (negative) titanium, each of them are 5 cm * 15 cm, in a cell consisting of 2 liters of water added to them 200 grams of sodium chloride and I ran the cell on 5 volts and 20 amperes Within 24 hours, some rust appeared in the solution, and the titanium electrode turned black, taking into account that the temperature was maintained between 60 to 80 degrees. What went wrong?

Chlorate forms at about 4-5 volts, but I see you put it at 7 so I think you have perchlorate
Interesting. I really should do a melting point test to confirm it is pure chlorate. I doubt I have perchlorate, it can't be that easy....
Extractions&Ire I forgot if you have a platinum or a MMO electrode. If you have MMO, watch out with the voltages as high voltages will destroy your anode.

I think you made perchlorate not chlorate and you needed to dry it better.
Can perchlorate really be made this easily?
Yes by running it for a long time. I run my chlorate cell for 3 days and perchlorate cells fro 6 to 8 days
It eats stuff like yours did when you start making the perchlorate if you don't keep it cool.
@@ExtractionsAndIre Use some stainless wire & wrap your electrode back to it's stem. Drill a small hole through the stem to affix the wiring directly through it for better contact & don't be cheap with the wire, keep it above the water line & you'll be just fine. If it does hit the water it should be ok but limit it as much as possible.

@@guythat779 Cuprous oxide. The anode gets oxidized and gives the electrons to hydrogen, so you end up with a bunch of hydrogen, yellow crap and no anode. He could soder it using tin though.
@@pietrotettamanti7239 Wouldn't the tin turn to tin chloride though due to the Hcl buffer? I'd figure you'd get a ton of tin (II) chloride if you did that. Same issue with lead (II) chloride and silver chloride. Welding it back is really the only option, it needs to be titanium on titanium contact for the electrode to work well, the part where it turns to copper has to be on the top of the cell outside it, or it will corrode from hcl vapors alone

Yeah, especially if I can get access to the TIG welder at school again, that would be the proper way of doing it.
if not I can try to spot weld it, won't be as neat but would at least make a decent electrical contact. maybe then I can reinforce it with some epoxy or something, just to keep the load off of the spot weld.
