I worked for myself for 35 years as a welder/fabricator (self employed). Originally, thought I wanted to make custom knives, but having to chase the dollar, wound up always welding and fabricating up other people's dreams for them. Have built bridges and resorts and treehouse parts, frames for custom homes, zip line platforms for commercial courses, stairs: straight, curved and spiral, trailers and truck beds and hitches, tiny house frames, a whole placer wash plant at a gold mine (I used to say "I find all my gold in the greasy cracks on the bottom side of semi truck frames!"). It was always someone else's dreams, though. People would sometimes ask me to do something artistic and I'd dutifully try to bang out their dreams for them. They were their dreams, though, not mine. I have the utmost admiration and respect for Barbie and her artistic talent. Hopefully, seeing it, some of it could rub off on me. Thank you for sharing what you dream. It is beautiful and so are you. To create such beautiful things is a gift. God Bless You.
Thanks to you Barbie I'm trying to start my own business making things out of recycled chains and my wife and mum don't think I can make it work but being dyslexic as well gives me the drive to do it.
I just want to say, both my father and brother are dyslexic. My dad can barely read but he worked hard to provide for our family. My brother is a master electrician- he struggles every day. I know how difficult it is for you but good for you for not giving up and for pursuing something that you enjoy! Don't give up! Our parents taught us we can do anything we want if we're willing to work for it. Sending you all kinds of encouragement to keep working for what you want!
Superb.. I spent 30 years as an engineer but always felt jealous of the tradesfolk who actually got to build what I designed. In my spare time I used to weld everything in sight..:). Now I love to teach people to weld, do auto mechanics and do advanced calculus for their homework. I really enjoy teaching young ladies because there are so many forces telling these gals they CAN'T do stuff.. Total BS. I have run a couple of "Women, welding workshops". To see the look on their faces when they go "Damn I actually melted steel together". So much more rewarding than algebra..:). Good for you Barbie, there really is nothing you can't do!
That's call having faith in yourself, and yes the people that you work with become family out there on the trades, it's hard to explain. Thanks for sharing and God bless you.
I discovered you with the video about the dragonfly. I never stopped watching all your creations and the kindness with which you share your knowledge. This video touched me deeply, and you are a very special person to me. I admire you for making your dream come true despite all the pitfalls. Seeing you with tears in your eyes makes me want to send you a huge hug. It's a joy to know that people like you exist, it's an open window to the world of dreams.
Omg...how did someone thumbs down a "humbling come-up story"??? Wth is wrong with people. The same guys that complain about their BONUS/STIMULUS CHECK, are the same guys who give bad reviews on genuinely GOOD stuff like this. ("Not enough lighting, sound quality was bad, too much talking, not enough talking".., ETC!)It always amazes me...ANYWAY, lol I see why Jody loves you. Such a good person. I can collaborate with the bum spouse n kids thing, and needing another way. Love your art too, very talented. I also do alot of Tig art, and MIG projects from homeshop. Love my welding day job too but my heart is in the art. Keep it up Barbie!
That was a beautiful story. That made me feel so much better about what I am doing. I quit the best paying job in my life to become a day trader. But I love welding and I admire your work.
thank you for sharing. I also started welding just so I knew how to do it. I started out learning how to forge knives and making knife sheaths. then I had discovered that I like to manipulate metal and build things that no one else could. It was something I have become passionate about. Right now I am beginning my journey and your story was very inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing. be blessed.
God bless you darling you are so inspirational. I am a retired engineer I had the same feeling as you regarding welding art. I had no idea how it would work but I just had a gut feeling that I just had to do it. And just last week I sold my first piece. I was so stoked. But it was all down to you sweetheart! You gave me that push to do it. Thank you so much for helping me and others. You rock girl!! Xx
Inspirational story! Very proud of you for deciding YOU were worth much more than others thought. People in the trades are what makes this country work! Also inspiring Women to look at jobs that “society” doesn’t feel they should do. As a business owner years ago, I was floored by young people applying for jobs with ZERO skills! Most couldn’t do basic math and I needed machinist trainees! God bless you, Barbie! Onward and Upward! You Rock!
Barbie the Welder, I Believe in YOU! I wanted to say I felt bad about hearing nobody believed, but my gosh! Look what it did for you! That Can Do, I'll Show Them attitude literally gives me the chills in the very best of ways. Amazing young lady! (BTW, I did the math... 24 years post divorce? Obviously you were 6 years old as a bride :-) ) I worked 25 years in Radiography. Loved it. Suddenly I was disabled and on my butt for 3 years staring at the walls. I've taken up a much milder for of metal art. I work with copper, better yet- I do it sitting on my large derriere! I found your videos while looking for copper ideas. I've watched your video 3 times in 3 days. Woman!!! You need to sculpt because you LOVE IT, and speak because WE NEED IT! (Feel free to use that I felt really good saying it!) Barbie I could listen to your story 1000 times and never get tired of hearing it, you my friend are a true American Cinderella story…….it does my heart ❤️ good to know that some good people like yourself have achieved success and are living your dreams
Most people hate their work and their lives and very few have the cajoles to start over with nothing. "The brave die once but the coward dies everyday." I worked for one of the top 30 corporations in the world as a high level manager. 65 hours a week for 30 years. One day on the way to work I realized I couldn't do it. I went back home and stared at the wall for the rest of the day. The next day was Saturday and I went to the office to pick up a few personal things - and I never went back. That was 15 years ago and these past 15 years have been the best of my life. My freedom cost me millions but money didn't give my life any meaning. I wouldn't trade what I learned about myself and art for anything. I'm glad you made through the jungle and are now doing what you were born to do. You've learned to put your heart into everything you do as NOTHING else will make you happy. YOU ARE FREE BARB!
I’m so happy to hear that you had the courage (read balls) to be true to yourself!!! Family and friends, health, and freedom are the true riches in the world!
I can't even really put into words how this is moving me forward. I was a single mom for many years, working hard and doing what needed to be done. I've recently left the medical field (the crap low-paying positions) after 16 years, because I KNOW there is more for me, and trying to figure out what I really want to do now. I was stressed, unhappy, burned out beyond belief. Then welding caught my attention, I can't even remember how, and even though I haven't moved forward yet (fear will do that), I am determined and so drawn to working with my hands and I just know in my gut I have to try this. Your story resonates so heavily with me (especially the no support), thanks for being raw and real enough to put it out there
I believe in you sister!!! Watch the video I just posted “A message to trade school students” it will give you even more inspiration to go into welding!!! Please keep me posted and let me know when you sign up for school. If you’re not already following rock the Trades follow them and Stanley Black & Decker both of those entities are giving away hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to help people go into the trades. If you need help with it email me at Barbie thewelder@gmail.com and I will see if I can help.
I started my young life out very much like you did Barbie. The will to succeed is motivated by necessity. You are a strong person and that is what you need to be in this world. Your future is so bright, you have got to wear shades. Good luck, and keep doing what you do so well. Outstanding !
I got chills and teard up a few times, you are truly blessed! I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 6 years ago, prior to that I was living in Northern California Humboldt County. It was there I started having medical issues, my girlfriend of 10 years kicked me out. Had to move back to Ohio where I now live. My daughter lives with her mom and had to fight 5 years for disability. I tried making jewelery out of silverware, everyone laughed, I gave up, I went on to buy a vinyl plotter and make vinyl stickers, well with MS I am easily fatigued , I also try and help my buddy in his auto mechanic shop. I took auto shop in high school. I can weld I have a Lincoln 180 mig. I like what you are doing, and might try my hand at it. I also do a little air brush painting which I think would be a good fit on these sculptures like the dragon fly. Thank you so much for everything you do, and inspiring me to try something new.👊🏻🤘🏻✌🏻😃
I found you trought a supid youtube video about creative mailboxes...isn't that great?!! :) there was a picture of you and your truck spelling barbye the welder..some google search and here I'm listening to your grat and moving story, I'm Italian always building or making something...man! I want to tell you so many things ..it's like I've found somebody I have a lot in common as creativity and personality, I just left a job that was all I have (I live in an old house that needs a restructuration) and I feel depressed too..so I understand when you talk about that spot filled with tears...is what I'm going trought right now figuring out what to do next...bye..have a good life!!
Awesome! AWESOME!!! You're a Rockstar...truly. and congratulations on having the bravery and the will to fight for yourself.. I'm taking your story to heart.
You delivered a powerful message, Barbie. I’m glad you followed your heart and your own inner voice rather than the negative voices around you. So many people don’t listen to that inner voice and remain locked in place. Keep going, Barbie. You’re awesome!!!
Congratulations! I learned to weld and fabricate from a woman. Then started a welding company. Doing art and forging now when able. I love your story. Keep it up and enjoy every day. I am proud of you and dont even know you personally. You are an inspiration to many! ⚒⛓🔩
Oh yeah. And by the way. The woman who taught me to weld looks just like you. She was in her late 30's and I was 19. She taught me more than just welding, if you know what I mean. 😉 Enough bout me. You are Beautiful and talented. A true Master Manipulator of Molten Metal.
One of the best stories ever. I swear that my life has changed since I got my first everlast welder and started making things with my own two hands. I've gotten more confident and happy. I am truly glad that such a talented artist such as yourself is finally getting the recognition you deserve.
I've watched so many of you videos, bought 2 of your books. I am learning so much but more than anything, I AM PROUD OF YOU!! I'm teaching myself to Mig. THANK YOU
I just found you. Popping through your videos because ima welding noob. Then I found this vid. Lol. From a no one, from nothing and from a very far away stranger....I say...good on you girl! You have found it. Many will never. The future is yours!!!!
Your story brought tears to my eyes. I'm a wanna be artist that never found their way. I'm 54 now n not in the greatest of health. Use to be married to a welder/fabricator n dreamed of us working together as a team to do metal art. He was too scared to take chances and I gave up. I see these traits so strong in our son. He loves to build things and is artistic. I'm sooo tryin to get him to follow that path. I hope he doesn't let fear ruin it. TY again for your words of encouragement. 💚
Please keep me up-to-date beautiful I would love to hear how you’re doing in school if you have any questions let me know I can always guide you in the right direction if I don’t know the answer to them! I’m so so proud of you! This is powerful!
You’re truly amazing. I found you when I was searching “how to” metal art and I have uncovered your awesomeness super-skilled talent, I am totally inspired!! My husband is teaching me how to weld using his mig. Can’t wait to weld by myself without his help. He has been welding for years and I am so ready. Thank you for sharing your story and being so genuine.
Barbie ..... I was Blown away by your Honesty and Harsh-full Truthfulness !!! You even brought a tear to my eye !!!! You are Blessed with Your Talent , and Self Belief !! Thank You Down Under Mike
Wow very inspirational I cried more then you I think 🤦🏻♂️ very moving definitely gives me some much needed motivation. Thank you so much for the courage to put this on you tube pretty amazing in its self
A dream ,hard work and dedication to your heart pays off ! Although we are only acquainted through social media, hearing your story ,I am extremely proud of you .You definitely have my support! You are the most determined and focused Woman I have ever come across ! Much success to you and your family!
Very brave to put your story out in the public especially so with your openess & honesty. Happy for ya'll & so wicked to see your incredible sucess, ya'll rock!!
You are so real & genuine, I absolutely loved your story. Nearly a year ago I started welding, & before that I felt like I had nothing good going for me. I started work as an admin assist. while learning whatever I can around the shop & my boss saw the interest. He helped me open up my mind to new career possibilities. Now I've gotten my hands on CNCs, lathes, tigging, migging, plasma cutting tools, all kinds of things I'd previously felt intimidated by for no good reason. I saw some similarities between your path & my own. It's so good to hear you speak frankly & encouragingly, thank you! Keep this up!
I commented on another of your videos, then came across this heart felt video. Courage, that's the word that you used that I believe best defines what it takes to do what you've done. Courage isn't the lack of fear, it's being afraid, but still facing the challenge anyway. I became a metal sculpture after being diagnosed with terminal Stage 4b colon cancer at 50 yrs of age. My decline in health prevented me from working my regular job and we were just recovering from my wife having aggressive cancer that took 9 reconstructive surgeries and a radical bilateral masectomy. We were broke and both lost our health, all within 36 months. We found a $950 mobile home with a garage, so we sold our one and only decent older car, got a cheap one, and used the rest to move into the mobile home. Out of desperation, as an artist who can't quit, when I felt well enough to get up, I'd go outside in our little garage attached to our mobile home and put some junk together with my $24 pawn shop flux core welder. I ended up making my first sculpture that sold at a local show a year ago for $3000. Since then, I have fought this cancer, turned away the chemo , surgery, and radiation, medicate only as I really have to, and radically changed my diet and lifestyle. I'm still working several days a week, despite being told I'd probably be on palative care a year ago, dead 4 months ago, and will keep working as long as I can. I've got automated scrap metal sculptures up and down the east coast and still struggle to get myself advertised, and still struggle a lot of days to just sit down in the shop and lay out some pieces to weld together later, but I am going at it full steam with what I do have left in this failing body. Seeing your story really helps me to keep at it, I wanted you to know that. It took courage to start making these and see what people would think, even more courage to not just lay down and let myself fade away. I admire that you have that quality and are transparent enough to share your fight, and that you are thoughtful enough to take the time to encourage others who may be afraid to face their own giants. Thank you!
I absolutely love your story. I can actually see the essence of you in your work a lot clearer now. I've only just started on my artistic welding journey and I've found you to be very inspirational.
Great to hear your story. After 30 plus years of moving metal as a surgical instrument repairman. I retired and started doing art from watching RUclips and also developing many own ways doing what I was watching. Took a welding class this last semester and got the welding bug. Got some of your books and now working on getting a constant supply of steel shoes and silverware. I love watching you work. With you story you are an inspiration to me and have passed on you name to young female teens that want to be a welder. Question do you allow people watch you work. I am a visual learner. Hope so if not I understand. My wife always backed me and I the same for her hands down. I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for being you. Jim
Barbie, Thank you for sharing your story. It's inspirational. You rock. I'm very envious of your determination and will. Horns high to ya! Keep at it! Keep it heavy!
Great story!! I grew up outside of Boston. Destroyed my very nice life with drugs and out of a random set of circumstances I ended up staying at a spare apartment a friend had on Davis st in Elmira by 711. I remember laying in that apartment, just getting over a long hard dope sick and thinking, "man, I'm not done. I have more in me than this" . Long story short, I rebuilt and remade myself. again. I have a great job, at a great place, I race every weekend at Champion Speedway and I'm working twords getting a shop set up in florida when I leave this place. Elmira... It's a hard place, not great vibes, but a place where if you are willing to put out the effort you can start to rise to the top of the crowd pretty quick. Elmira will always have a very special place in my heart... Great hearing your story. Sorry I just spilled out a piece of mine, but I just wanted to say that Im bagging what you're scanning. Keep it up yo.
I feel you Sister! I am walking a very similar path and just starting to get my art and myself out there. Thank you for cutting down some gnarly vines and branches to make way for those behind you ❣️❣️
Good for You !!! I believe in You too !!! I took advanced welding after My service in the Navy was over and feel like You about art and welding - just something extremely satisfying about creating art w metal vrs oil or acrylic painting which I have done and am pretty good at is Metal objects You create are virtually indestructable !!! and as You well know each machine opens up another lobe in the brain for your creativity and being able to create is one of the greatest things I think God gave Us after (LOVE ) I hope You find better luck w the first also be a pity for a Young Pretty talented Women to be without it - so enjoy the ride and don't forget to thank the good Lord for being there w You every step of the way : ) ENJOY !!!
well look at you now!! you go girl! I've been an underwater welder and construction for 18 years and still love my job! If you truly love what you do you will never work a day in your life!
We have had a very similar journey, seven years ago I was a divorcee who only owned a bag of clothes, a box of tools and an ancient beat up van. Now I own my house, a fully equipped workshop and a very successful business, most importantly I’ve married a woman who unconditionally has my back. I’m proud of you Barbie, I understand the journey you’ve made. 👍🏻
speaking words of thousands of people out there. truly inspirational! Will hopefully follow in your footsteps.. Big love and respect from England. regards Steve
Such an inspiring story! Will be sharing this with my two daughters- am also a single parent... Am here after seeing one of your tik tok shorts. Amazing artwork, inspiring story, beautiful person- you should share your story on The Moth Radio hour! Best to you and family!
good for you, Barbie! you're very courageous to strike out on your own, and you're doing great. this is a really inspiring story. you should def give yourself credit, because this is not an easy road you've walked.
You are AMAZING! "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition." - Steve Jobs
Thank you so much for this. For years, I was listening to people who told me that my blacksmithing was an interesting hobby, but that it could never be a viable business in the modern world. But over the last couple of years, I've been seeing that I can make money with my craft. Your story is not dissimilar to my own, and you've inspired me to push a little harder to get to the point of loosening my grip on the crutch of my day job. Now I have to get back out to the shop to hammer out some sellables. Thanks again for the pep talk. It was exactly what I needed.
Barbie I've been making all kinds of sculptures for almost 40 yrs for all kinds of people and companies from various materials, i just wanted to say i think its great your following your inner voice, this is the main thing i tell creatives to do. Its very hard but its satisfying. I want to tell you as Neil Young once said " Keep on Welding in the Free World"! Best of success to you, chromesean.com

Great story! Always remember the old saying " doing the right thing isn't always easy but its always right!"
Beautiful!!! Thank you!
It's only raw courage when you're scared to death. Very inspiring.
Thank you kindly!!! I was definitely scared but my desire to be a sculptor trumped the fear!

CONGRATULATIONS SISTER!!! I'm trying to do the same, finished welding school, & got me a welding machine. Step one & two complete.
So very proud of you!!!!
Too you also my sister

Thank you kindly Shane! Best wishes, welding will take you anywhere you want it to!! 💙👩🏭
What about you doing it yourself?? 54 is super young!!😘
Well, I just signed up for a beginner mig welding class!!! We shall see!!! 🙂🧡
Please keep me up-to-date beautiful I would love to hear how you’re doing in school if you have any questions let me know I can always guide you in the right direction if I don’t know the answer to them! I’m so so proud of you! This is powerful!

Thank you so very much for the love!🥰
Thank you!
You are a beautiful lady inside and out! Great story! You inspire me!
Thank you so very much Christopher!!
I absolutely love your story. I can actually see the essence of you in your work a lot clearer now. I've only just started on my artistic welding journey and I've found you to be very inspirational.
You are amazing! More power and art creations to come!
Thank you so very much Joel I appreciate you!
Jim
Thank you for your testimony 🙏🏽

Your focus and perseverance are impressive and I like your art.
Keep it up yo.

well look at you now!! you go girl! I've been an underwater welder and construction for 18 years and still love my job! If you truly love what you do you will never work a day in your life!
Under water welding has always been intriguing to me! Very cool!!
I’m so happy for you that you had the courage to leave a unhappy situation and find happiness!!!
Excellent, I just shared this video with a young lady from work, inspiring. Thank you.

good for you, Barbie! you're very courageous to strike out on your own, and you're doing great. this is a really inspiring story. you should def give yourself credit, because this is not an easy road you've walked.
Thank you kindly!☺️
You are AMAZING! "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition." - Steve Jobs
Kicking butt Barbie!! Keep it up. You are amazing.
That’s awesome and I’m very proud of you keep up the great work
Thank you!!
Thank You Friend, you're an inspiration & very helpful with the videos. I appreciate your journey.
I appreciate that!
Wow,truly inspirational. Thank you for opening up with your story. 😊
I’m so happy it helped!!! Make beautiful things you’re proud of!!
Barbie you are amazing. You do nice work.
Truly inspirational story Barbie and one that you should be rightly proud of. Brilliant!
Thank you so very much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Barbie I've been making all kinds of sculptures for almost 40 yrs for all kinds of people and companies from various materials, i just wanted to say i think its great your following your inner voice, this is the main thing i tell creatives to do. Its very hard but its satisfying. I want to tell you as Neil Young once said " Keep on Welding in the Free World"! Best of success to you, chromesean.com
