I personally built my main base just outside a spawn point for the Draugr in the swamp on the water for entrail easy farming. I leveled the ground out into the ocean until i stopped getting aggro from mobs spawning, then built a double wide large door, then extended it further for carrot farm, bees, and portals, then far end is my base in pure safety. If i need meat, i can take the portals to a few animal spawn locations i have setup and kill them off for food. I can physically see the trolls spawn and such from my base, but im to far for them to aggro ontop of me.. typically they just wander around in front of the gate entrance for a while... Ive had as many as 8 trolls spawn at once outside my base.
i built stone walls eventually.. also making sure you have enough iron to occupy an existing stone spire in the swamp is also very helpful as well. Grinding out iron becomes easy after the first 4-5. Is there a certain point that the troll event will happen? I've kept my comfort level at 5 while building up my skills and base and I only get the beasts and the greyling events
@@DrRippenShitten it seems time related, I didn't get my first attack until day 40ish. I've had at least 8 or 9 now (day 125) with my most recent and fiercest attack while constructing a base near a swamp. About a dozen skeletons and 5 or 6 dragurs.

You need to dig a trench all the way around your base so they can't get to it. They'll still invade, but they'll linger around confused while you can pick them off.
Which is why I found a tiny outcropping of land in the middle of the ocean and built a castle. Peace and quiet; I still get random attacks when I'm at other camps but my central base is a nice safe home.
Hey love! Great vid! Small tip. The raids are timed but every time you walk out of the red circle on the map, the time freezes. Defeat all your enemies while in the circle and your raid will be quick.
The wall's ramparts (the area where you can walk on the wall) wouldn't be needed for trolls. They are much taller than the walls, so you can just stand on the ground shooting them. (as long as they don't break) The ramparts would do well for the other invasions. Though I would suggest having somewhere to duck behind cover (known as battlements) so you don't get picked off by archers. edit: I enjoy building episode by the way!
I would suggest putting defensive spikes in front of your wall. They are kind of fragile, but they do a lot of damage, and most of the smaller enemies can die to them. Also, if you do then be careful, as they can harm you as well. Though I think they do a lot less damage to you than it does the enemy. One thing I love about this game is that all repairs are free. Imagine if it costs resources to repair your arms/armor and buildings. Edit: Also, as some people are suggesting, you should probably build a moat. I need to take the time to do that myself, but I'm just not looking forward to all of the digging...
it didnt take me that long by myself on a decent sized base. the moat doesn't need to be super deep either just maybe twice your player height. And the trolls wont cross. So now when anything comes to raid i'm good. My base is legit safe. I also planted trees all the way around to keep the trolls from being able to get in if they ever did get across my moat.
When they attack your base again, I would reccomend to lure them in to the forest. That way you dont have to run around like crazy and waste stamina, instead just hide behind 2 trees and wait for them to go around or something, it will allow you to regain your stamina as well as getting hits on them with the bow. To prepeare I usually have a chest near the exit / entrance of my base filled with arrows just so I can easily restock
@@brokentoes6721 just don’t stay close to the trees they are “chopping” down. Works for me whenever I get raided by then I just run to the forest near my base and then go behind a tree. Guess that’s kind of cheesing the AI but it is what it is. :0
Idk how one would do this outside of the black forest but I found if you got into some of those stone ruins it bugs out the trolls ai. They'll "see" you but don't swing because they can't "see" you at the same time. If you find a good enough ruin you can spam arrows out of a window or a gap in the wall and get free troll kills. Doesn't work 100% of the time though
Just run into the forest, shoot them and let them fell some trees in the process, that way they don't damage your precious base at all. Just don't fight them in the open where there are no obstacles. They go around trees if you're not close enough to hit you, but you can run straight through.
Stay in the red circle, don't attack the trolls, just keep them occupied till the timer runs out. otherwise two more will just spawn in after you kill them. It is just time based You can get rid of them without a single shot. After 2 minutes or so you get the "The ground stopped shaking£ message and you can kill them if you need hide, otherwise the wander off and despawn. They always follow you, so just keep them away from your base and let the timer run out. Will never lose any part of the base
When you ran from your base to fight them I was like oh no, thats how it happens, rough. You killed them and everything was fine and your base was ok...and did it again. Stress, man.
Talking of trolling... there = there are and their = belonging to them, you probably already knew that.. just wanted to clear it up for anyone else reading who might not be a native English speaker.. sorry to be a pain
This happened to us this morning , then tonight , Surtling attack , sky turned red, Air smelled of sulphur and they showed up coming out of the tree line. Damn near got our shit pushed in twice in one day ,,, Great Game !
Most people do not understand this, but the Raid timer progresses a lot faster if you remain within the raid zone. If you leave the zone and come back, they just respawn.
Will trolls go in water? Yes, they will. I once kited a troll for so long that it turned away from me, walked pretty deep into the ocean and stayed there for some time brooding.
Best defence is to dig a deep deep trench around your base, so that the trols will fall in and can't reach up. If the trench end reaches water, it will fill with water completely!
Kage, kite the group until they're clustered up then run towards them with shield up and they'll all strike at the same time. That allows you to get their timing set so you can swing and not get hit.
15:51 Son, have you heard the good word of our savior the Stagbreaker? Massive AoE with knockback. It takes a lot of stamina but when you are ganged on by that many you're still better of staggering them and picking off the weakened ones.
The good news is events really are trying to attack YOU and not your base, so as long as you are out fighting them, theyll not be knocking down your structures. If you go hide theyll try to break in.
Good thing is even if your base gets wrecked the mats will still be there, so there isn't really ascenario that isn't salvagable. Once you get a better shield and are able to parry trolls, fighting them becomes super fun as well.
Probably a good idea to have other stuff for an emergency kit, like the "good food" he mentioned. Having not tried the game yet, I don't know if the food spoils or if it can be kept in a chest.
Hi Kage, the best troll defense that I've found is free, just dig a trench around the outer walls that is deep enough to be just over their heads. The trolls come, fall in the trenches, then you just arrow them to death neat and easy. Rock On!
Just pack supplies at a second base outside the red range. They don't do anything if you're not in the red zone. I ran out of the red zone, killed the dwarves following me, and realized there weren't any more spawning. I went to a second base, slept, came back resupplied and rested. Then I stepped into the red zone to trigger their attack, kited them. Rinse, repeat. I even cleared a path for my kiting retreat. Eventually the event ended.
17:00 It’s a lot easier to time your attacks while blocking multiple enemies if you manage to parry the first heavy attack. Being staggered delays their next attacks long enough for a few more enemies to get their swings in, giving you a chance to get an attack in before they all fully recover. Also, you lose less stamina to excessive blocking if you move sideways in addition to backing away, circling around. The enemies get more confused and hung up on each other, and some of their attacks are more likely to miss compared to only being farther away but still straight in front of them. And one last thing: Don’t forget about the sharp stakes you can build a little ways in front of your walls to damage enemies (if they’re too close to the walls, trolls won’t get close enough to take damage)!
Build up the terrain into a wall embankment, and put a moat/ditch in front of that. Make the moat wide/deep enough that a troll will stand in the bottom and not be able to swing a tree trunk up to the top of the embankment. Fill with spikes. Profit.
HUGE Difference between the troll hide gear, +25 Stealth so that adds on to your normal stealth making you most likely able to stealth by almost anything. What you could have done is bring the trolls into your "Treasure hole" that you dug, they may not be able to get out of there. So far I have not had any trolls attack like you had, one time a Troll spawned near my base and saw me teleport there and therefore started to attack the fencing but never did I have them attack nor did I get "Ground is shaking", been at it 120 days. Also you should use the Polearm as it has a swing that allows you to hit everything in a circle.
Tame wolves for defense. Lox for meat/skin. Greys and Nex will swim within a certain range, the rest will not - trolls only to wade shallow streams, they will not enter coastal/ocean water. Best defense is a moat, 2nd best is palisades + spikes and wolves.
- 15:51 Is a good example for situations where the Iron Sledge, crafted with the Ymir Flesh from the Trader is useful du to its AOE. (Same holds for the Stagbreaker to a lesser degree.) - You can dig a trench in front of your palisade, to improve your defense.
We built towers that are taller than the trolls to shoot from. The stone walls keep them at a distance. We also have a tree pit that trolls have fallen in and we have a stone shelter with openings to shoot out of for trolls. Pretty much, our base is built around troll attacks cuz they happen often.
Something that you could do to improve the wall height for the trolls(plz take this with a grain of salt bc i don't have the game yet) is to create a trench in front of the spike walls w/ the pick and raise the ground on the inside so you can shoot over the wall as they beat on it(now that i think about it that would help with the smaller enemies too), once again i don't know if it will work but i guess it may help with trolls, Maybe...
its one of the reasons why made a fort on black forest near the sea and separated it from the forest by digging a very deep chasm arround it together with the wood wall and spikes, also made archer towers on each sides, not even small monsters and trolls could pass the watery chasm.
Draugr are strongly resistant to fire (and immune to poison) Fire also goes out in the rain. And Uncharged bow shots deal significantly less damage. So perhaps not fire against the Draugr wave in the rain? Also, use tasty mead to keep topping back up stamina in long fights
MAKE A MOAT AROUND YOUR BASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You really should make a moat, level all the land inside of it, add a wall just inside the moat and then put your garden and home inside of there. Space out the hives and vegetables a bit so they grow faster. Make sure you add as many comfort items as you can. I would ditch the boars. You should be eating sausage, carrot soup and turnip stew. This adds 130/150 +7 (Health/Stamina +healing). The only foods better are lox meat pie, blood pudding, and serpent stew. These would give you 250/210 +12 but I do not think you can make them yet. I would have moved the hices and removed half your deck. Upgrade you Troll armor because the little stuff don't hurt you and the big stuff you have to run from anyways. You really need to learn to sneak. If you spot an enemy before it agros then sneak and hit it for triple damage.. and it looks like it triples BEFORE armor. This even hurts trolls pretty bad. The higher your sneak skill gets the less likely they are to spot you. Knives have a 10x backstab damage. I have seen a video of someone backstabbing a troll with a Abyssal Razor (24 damage knife (bronze knife is 18) and not only did it take out about 70% of its hit points in one shot, but it staggered the troll and he finished off the troll with 2-3 more hits from the knife before it could strike back. Also knives and troll armor do not slow you at all. You armor and weapons give you a -25% to movement. You could walk faster than most of the enemies. Carry you mace and shield but also have a knife on you.
Just an FYI.. Yes trolls will go into water as i had once chase me out a good distance and kill me in it. I was having to swim and he was still walking with water to his chest level.
KAGE! you can parry the trolls with the shield you have! also, you can autorun with Q, so you can eat your food and run easily get some iron before you do the storage. with iron you can make bigger chests
you killed both trolls before the invasion "event" ended, so it respawned 2 more. only 2 seem to spawn during the "ground is shaking" event, and this happens to have a few spawn timers during a set timeframe of about 5-10 min invasions, so if any of the pre-set mob lists have members knocked off before a new spawn tick happens, it spawns the difference. you can notice this easily by taking out the mixed bag of drauger and skeletons during "a foul odor emanates from the swamp" events. key is to kite for a few mins without killing to run the timer down, then mop up. unless you want materials then just murder as fast as possible, you only get 2-4 full mob list respawn opportunities.
Yes the enemy will swim to get you. Palisade, moat and spikes. Spikes at the end of the palisade, near and in the water, they'll kill themselves in them. Enemy will not jump, use that in your advantage.
I've not had trolls yet.. just brutes and shaman so far. Your best bet for that badass defense is to use a double fence with about a two-floors length and a pit in the middle (I make my pits about as deep as half of a troll that covers the circumference of the base). That way, if your enemy ends up breaking through the first wall, they'll succumb to the pit-o-death. Also lookout towers are key.. can't wait til this game allows us to build ballista's =D
Brother.... You need to dig around your base, the sea water will fill that pit around the base. The bastards will still swim around the edges as you have them, you must build the spike wall on the sea as well.
agree i go for a high dirt wall with palisade on tope. entrances have several layers of spikes set up. pull trolls into them for easy kills as thye can ge hung up on the spikes which are easy to replace.
Only troll one I've had so far, the troll hit my stake walls a few times, I shot them a few time, he walked off into the mist and it ended. I was like WTF!
That was one extreme Troll attack. I have never seen an attack like it. As for your assertion that the game was designed for multi-player, I would say you were right but the game definitely scales for the number of players. It shouldn't be a problem for a single player, and I haven't found that to be the case.
A nice wide moat filled with stake traps. Can you snap a wall onto the back of the defensive structure to use as battlements? That would make it easier to get around, especially if you build towers along the wall
My question to the community is: Can the trolls climb up steep terrain or avoid "pits". Maybe make a deadfall and lead them into it with a narrow breakable bridge with a gap for your character to leap over. could be an option to "cheese" the AI.
they can not climb up terrain slopes that are like moats or pits with spikes in the bottom of the pits, you can cover the pit with wood or stone, and once the troll is on top of your covered trap you just break the floor under them with your hammer and they fall into the pit, unable to escape.
You kept leaving the red circle & resetting the trolls. You have to stay inside the red circle for it to end, It's time-based & if you kill off trolls b4 the time ends, it will just respawn new trolls. If you leave the circle, the timer stops & restarts when you re-enter the red circle (with new trolls if the previous ones are gone).
Kage this game is best played with 3-5 coop, per developers, and my guildies agree. I however have played solo from scratch and taken down all 5 bosses and stocking up now for the next expansion. I like sharing your struggle and hope you continue.
the waves are time based, but in order for the time to end you have to STAY IN THE ZONE WHERE YOU SEE THE TEXT. if you don't see the text, you're out of the zone. fight them in the zone and you only have a maximum of two trolls to deal with. the number varies wave to wave and you MAY get one star or two star mobs. When the wave ends, the text will change and then fade. fight them in the zone until you see this text change. source: just under 200 hours in game thus far.
also, this mechanic, in multiplayer, again works in zones, and seems to depend on the time any player has spent in a particular "chunk". one person building at home gets a wave event, the others on the server will not see the wave event unless they come home.
Don't run out of the red circle. Troll events last for 1 minute and 30 seconds inside the circle, and if you keep killing the enemies more will spawn. Run around i the circle without killing them, if thetime is up, you can kill them and no new ones will come
Had this happening twice while I was building a stonewall around my camp! It was tough but I lured them in a trench with stakes so I could snipe them off one after the other. Haven’t happened again after I finished the stonewall, but I wonder if that would even stop them! Been thinking about making a moat with stakes around the outside of the base camp.
A troll just wrecked my base...and I'm so happy he did! I was procrastinating on fortifying my base and building an actual wall so the game made me by sending a troll. I was in the middle of building my first chimney and then boom! I said never again and after the fight I made my first set of troll armor and built a nice wall around my base. 10/10 game, way better Rust. Or at least more enjoyable than Rust.
This development team has made BANK on this game....almost $60 million with 3 million sales. That is crazy!!! But that's what you can expect if you put out a good game! Can we get a link to the series that you are streaming with your friends? Some folks dig motes around their base to help with defense against the invasions. You mentioned in a previous video that you had a friend who dug out an area so they could safely park their boat? I think that is brilliant! I am going to give that a go once I move closer to the plains. My current base is semi-permanent until then, so I don't want to build anymore than is necessary.
Kage, you can make signs for all your storage. Wood and coal. Not sure if you have the recipe yet. Have fun and Thanks. This game is soo much fun. Yes, way better with a group.
I read this is the fastest selling steam game....ever, which is a good thing. It means this game will be around longer with more content coming no doubt and similar games will be green lighted for development.
a heavy trench between the wall and like 2 clicks off it (to the side facing away from your base) for the enemies to fall in may be a cool idea (very time consuming i would imagain)
Hey kage good video Valheim is amazing. Tip for the trolls and to get stuff take them into the woods. As they swing they will hit the trees so saves time cutting trees down. Hate mining copper kite one to a copper node and get him to take it out. Great video
build a ward, so its easier to notice when your base is being attacked. it makes sounds when your stuff is being hit in the range. Also you can stack the stakewalls on top of eachother
I built the palisades and then dug a deep trench in front of the palisades. I also screwed up the pathing by cutting all the trees down around my base and leaving them there. I can leap over the logs but the trolls try to find a way around them.
It´s actually why a lot of people still play Fallout 4, some have spent an eternity building tons of stuff. I would love for a game like Far Cry 5 to have this sort of development process, you could build and level to your hearts content and help the locals when you got tired of building. I do prefer the building mechanics in no man´s sky but that´s a finished game and this one has just started.
When we played as a group, the second boss location bugged out. We didn’t know any better so we made another server to debug it. We did it again for the bone mass out of convenience. So, for the longest time, we only had little greyling raids. I kept waiting for the big shit until we realized what was going on. After that, we beat Moder in the group server to unlock the missing raids.
Well, the attack is time based. But you need to stay in the red area, or atleast within render distance. But if you want to farm trolls its a good way to run away like you did. Otherwise you can kite the first 2, and none else will spawn. Same with the tiers after trolls.
trolls are timed. they do go away. dig a moat/trench around your base. problem solved. no land creature will get you. unless they have ranged weapons :)
just so you know if you build like a moat around your base the trolls can't cross it since none of the monsters to what I've seen can't jump except for the flyers of course however the trolls and other land based monsters don't have the ability to jump so building a moat say 10 meters out from your base should in theory keep your main base or sub bases safe that's what I do with all my bases I build a moat around them to keep them from being destroyed mean its an option rather then building defensive walls but again its up to you Kage

Best answer. Love to see the Trolliseum...... :D
I need to take the time to do that myself, but I'm just not looking forward to all of the digging...
was just thinking that, a moat for trolls
it didnt take me that long by myself on a decent sized base. the moat doesn't need to be super deep either just maybe twice your player height.
To prepeare I usually have a chest near the exit / entrance of my base filled with arrows just so I can easily restock
until the bust the trees down and they fall on you. tru stori bruh
My plan is to run around the stone pillars. They don’t corner very well
You cannot run. The player must remain within the red circle to complete the raid.
Okay I'm glad I watched this episode I've got some serious fortification upgrades to make damn trolls lol
Same here! 😅
I read that as fornication upgrades...
I need to sleep lol
A cool 60+ Million for the development team... congrats to them 💪🏻
definitely going to be one of the best games out when it is fully done. They deserve it fs

So you can use that to farm trolls?
@@kathrynck up to a certain point I guess so.

*pirates of the caribbean theme starts playing*
I think draugs will also do the same and yep, definitely some pirates of the Caribbean shit right there.
Most people do not understand this, but the Raid timer progresses a lot faster if you remain within the raid zone. If you leave the zone and come back, they just respawn.
Came here to say this.
If you go hide theyll try to break in.
maybe you can store arrows outside of your base, so you don't have to get in your base during a random troll attack
Good thing is even if your base gets wrecked the mats will still be there, so there isn't really ascenario that isn't salvagable. Once you get a better shield and are able to parry trolls, fighting them becomes super fun as well.
Hide a cache of arrows in the fields outside your base.
Probably a good idea to have other stuff for an emergency kit, like the "good food" he mentioned. Having not tried the game yet, I don't know if the food spoils or if it can be kept in a chest.
@@Thalanox so far in my experience food does not go bad, so yes you can load up a chest with what you need
@@devinem24 Cool.
Trolls are really nice. The one with the tree trunk invited me to a friendly game of golf... I was the ball...
They wrecked my base. Nothing left except loads of material on the ground. You dont loose anything in that matter except pride and time ...
Digging deep wide trenches combined with palisades did the trick for me so far :-) Let the trench war games begin!
Trolls won't go into those holes, they will path around them. However, playing ring around the rosie with the pits will help.
(Same holds for the Stagbreaker to a lesser degree.)
- You can dig a trench in front of your palisade, to improve your defense.
Draugr are strongly resistant to fire (and immune to poison)
Fire also goes out in the rain.
And Uncharged bow shots deal significantly less damage.
So perhaps not fire against the Draugr wave in the rain?
Also, use tasty mead to keep topping back up stamina in long fights
Sooo while building this wall I'm sitting here thinking "is he going to build a deep moat?"
Fancy seeing you here im continuing your daily bring back get sauced on message on shots videos :D
This, all this!!
Just an FYI.. Yes trolls will go into water as i had once chase me out a good distance and kill me in it. I was having to swim and he was still walking with water to his chest level.
KAGE! you can parry the trolls with the shield you have!
also, you can autorun with Q, so you can eat your food and run easily
get some iron before you do the storage. with iron you can make bigger chests
Your comment is very helpful. Thanks for all the extra bonus knowledge! It will definitely help out. Hope Kage sees this!
you killed both trolls before the invasion "event" ended, so it respawned 2 more. only 2 seem to spawn during the "ground is shaking" event, and this happens to have a few spawn timers during a set timeframe of about 5-10 min invasions, so if any of the pre-set mob lists have members knocked off before a new spawn tick happens, it spawns the difference. you can notice this easily by taking out the mixed bag of drauger and skeletons during "a foul odor emanates from the swamp" events.
key is to kite for a few mins without killing to run the timer down, then mop up. unless you want materials then just murder as fast as possible, you only get 2-4 full mob list respawn opportunities.
You should charge the bow all the way, your missing out on a lot of damage
@Darkstar shooting them in the balls staggers them and more dmg

@@Edcognito it becomes more relevant once you hit iron/bronze and so on but its not a bad habit to get into
21 episodes in and we still don't have inventory organized? Where is the real Kage848, and what have you done with his body?
Yes the enemy will swim to get you.
Palisade, moat and spikes.
Spikes at the end of the palisade, near and in the water, they'll kill themselves in them.
Enemy will not jump, use that in your advantage.
Dig trenches around your base.
Raise the dirt on your base side of the trench for invulnerable wall.
I kept thinking "nugget biscuit nugget in a biscuit" during the song in the troll fight lol
Brother.... You need to dig around your base, the sea water will fill that pit around the base.
The bastards will still swim around the edges as you have them, you must build the spike wall on the sea as well.
forget stonewalls. terraform cliffs(by either digging a trench or elevate the ground. incorporate terraforming and verticality. it breaks AI
agree i go for a high dirt wall with palisade on tope. entrances have several layers of spikes set up. pull trolls into them for easy kills as thye can ge hung up on the spikes which are easy to replace.

A little hint vs trolls: sprint away when they swing, then walk backwards while drawing the bow. You can get several hits in. Aim for the head! 😉
Pro tip. Right click on anything to use it. Arrows right click to use arrow type. You don't have to assign to hot key.
the waves are time based, but in order for the time to end you have to STAY IN THE ZONE WHERE YOU SEE THE TEXT. if you don't see the text, you're out of the zone. fight them in the zone and you only have a maximum of two trolls to deal with. the number varies wave to wave and you MAY get one star or two star mobs.
Run around i the circle without killing them, if thetime is up, you can kill them and no new ones will come
The bare hand Troll can be parried with up graded wood shield but the tree trunk one can't be unless your lvl100 blocking.
"I don't mean to raise your blood pressure" lmaooooooooo
Moat and spikes. Put spikes snapped to the bottom of your walls, and later on put a 2nd row in the bottom of the moat.
The Grim reaper prewarns you about base attacks!
The trolls will not only hit you on the wall but also destroy it with a couple swings.
Trolls will go in the water up to neck high. Plus, mote would be better around your place with a bridge and a spike Barrier beyond it.
Great video
Fun watching run around from giant trolls
build a ward, so its easier to notice when your base is being attacked. it makes sounds when your stuff is being hit in the range. Also you can stack the stakewalls on top of eachother
It's a good idea to keep a chest of arrows outside just in case
Good idea make a big troll pit around your base get them to fall in lol
I've never seen a Troll enter anything it can't navigate out of. Their pathing seems to prevent it.
Hey, seen a bit of a few of your videos. They have helped a lot, especially some of the tricks I've learned from you, keep it up!
Always have some Fire Arrows with you for Trolls.
create a deep grave around your base like they do around castles as defense
