    if i'm not mistaken old bardstown bottled in bond is only available in kentucky. So make sure you ALWAYS pick up a few bottles of it when you're in Kentucky.

      I've only seen the 90 proof and "Estate bottled" versions here in northern California. I love those, and would like to try their BiB.

    New bastard here. Been binge watching for awhile. We went to Bardstown last month for the soul purpose of touring Willett brothers. We visited Bardstown about 4 years ago and stayed at Ol Talbot Tavern. Bartender suggested I try Willett Pot Still Reserve when I asked for a recommendation. I loved it. Bought a bottle in the way out of town only to find out it was not available back home in Ohio. I ended up rationing my bottle for the next 4 years till we did tour where I restocked plus picked up a bottle of their 4 year rye. Willett is a great distillery and we enjoyed their tour. I also have a bottle of Blanton’s that was dated with my birthday I keep for special occasions. But still enjoy the Willett Pot still more.
    I truly enjoy this channel and am glad I stumbled upon it. You glorious bastards are truly friends I’ve never met.
    May the only moss that grows upon you, be on your headstone and never under your feet, as life is an adventurer and you must travel to enjoy it. Cheers.

    Anything Willett is an absolute gem. And they have one of the most immersive and entertaining Tours. How can you beat at least 4 distillery cats, including a rather chonky one that was passed out under the spout of the pot still.

    Old Bardstown Bottled in Bond sells for about $20 whereas Willett Bourbon sells for about $55 and comes in a POT still shaped bottle that is adaptable to becoming a bong. Most Californians would probably go for the Willett even if they don't drink whiskey.

    Greetings Rex and Daniel. I'm an MB from Australia and I have a question. My incredible girlfriend has organised a trip to Melbourne this month for us to attend a Japanese whiskey tasting masterclass. I'm still fairly new to whiskey but I've been watching you guys for a couple of years and I'm training myself to get past the alcohol to enjoy the beauty of the whiskey. I really enjoy bourbons (Eagle Rare, Blantons, Jack Daniels, Willett, Buffalo Trace, Markers Mark etc.) I've tried a variety of Bourbons and I'm developing a pallet. My question is what should I do/how do I prepare to get the most out of the Japanese Masterclass experience?

    • @hotdog99100
      @hotdog99100 5 лет назад +1

      Doohan, not Rex or Daniel by any means. Having seen much of their videos have learned most of Japanese Whisky is from the Scotch tradition. So, dipping a toe into Scotch may be the path. This can get costly. Good news many of the big name Scotch distillers sell sample like 1.5 oz bottles. So trying them may help. In the Scotch less costly route, there is Monkey Shoulder. It is ofter about $36 in PA. I do find a slight sower funk taste in Monkey Shoulder. Doubt this is truly a normal Scotch thing.
      So, MB's with more Scotch experience; what would you recommend?

    • @elixwhitetail
      @elixwhitetail 5 лет назад

      @@hotdog99100 I don't disagree with this, but the bulk of Japanese whisky is likely to resemble the lighter, more approachable side of Scotch. Masataka Taketsuru's first whisky was an absolute bomb because he made an aggressive, challenging Scotch, while Suntory's friendly non-threatening blends met with wide commercial success.
      This is not to say you can't find a peated Japanese whisky, because Nikka for sure is doing it, but the stereotype is friendly and approachable whiskies that're often going to be mixed into highballs so looking to Scotch for similarities is best done by staying in calmer friendlier waters and not straight into a peated fist-fight like Laphroaig.

    I recently found a budget scotch, Aerstone 10 YO Sea cask, for maybe 30 dollars where the label and box described it as "Smooth and Easy" which, for 30 bucks I couldn't pass it up .. but when they said smooth - they MEANT smooth. It's very watery and it had no absolutely no burn (at least to someone who drinks regularly), but I think it would make a phenomenal gateway whiskey to people who aren't real fans of whiskey

    The problem that I see with using smooth as a descriptor at all is that it is attributed to "easy drinking". So either it's like Daniel states as going down easy ; not being too spikey (burn) OR it can also mean that it throws some flavor notes at the drinker that may be odd or unfamiliar. On the opposite side of the spectrum, some people so turned off by it are often also people who almost strictly seek out rough and/or high proof whiskeys (hazmat heads) and wouldn't be interested in anything deemed in any way subtle.

    It’s getting harder and harder to find OB EB, OB BIB, Pure Kentucky, and Kentucky Vintage.
    I haven’t seen a bottle of estate purple or gold since 2014 in the Houston Market!
    The 4 year rye was visible, but has now disappeared.
    I saw my first bottle of OB 90 ( Willett Made) about 3 weeks ago. I did not buy it, because I bought the OB EB, first bottle I have seen in approximately 2-3 years.
    Yes, yes I did name my dog Willett.

    When people talk about "smooth" spirits, they are talking about the texture of the drink, not the flavor. (As opposed to "roughness".) "Smooth" isn't in the same category as "sweet" or "sour". It's about the texture of the drink, which can best be felt by exhaling through the nose after the sip. Try it some time. Try to feel the texture of the alcohol vapors of the drink on your upper palette. It's a great way to tell how well the spirit has been made and how it will affect you in the morning.

After this video was finished I continued to an older one I hadn't seen in a while. It was the poor man's John E. Fitzgerald very special reserve. Within the first 4 minutes you both described the whiskey as... SMOOTH. And throughout the video a total of 5 times. Super smooth, not as smooth, smooth. Help a brother out. Can I say smooth without getting my balls busted or not?

    So right, it's so much harder to get a good budget scotch. Lost my job in September, started buying Kirkland brand stuff. After a few bottles of that and missing my great Islay's I'd been buying, said okay, let's break down and get some JW red. After opening it, was at first liking it (had never had it before) because at first taste, it was better than the Kirkland stuff I'd been buying. But after awhile, went...Uhgggg! Nasty!!!

    • @DJBrucetx
      @DJBrucetx 5 лет назад

      Michael Hassler try and find the old green label “pure malt”. Not the best scotch I have had, but the best JW that is compatible with my palette.

    • @michaelhassler7446
      @michaelhassler7446 5 лет назад

      I've seen some green label, but it was over $100 for the bottle. I don't think that qualified as a budget scotch. My favorite Islay's are about the same or even less. The JW red at Costco was about $25, or $50 for the 1.75 liter.

    • @DJBrucetx

    pretty confident the liquid was distilled at Willett, by willett - BIB requires the distillery to be listed on the label - If they used the word "Produced" by, then you could question it..and then still couldn't have BIB distinction. You cannot have a sourced Bottled in Bond as far as I know. Produced is not a legal term. Perhaps a technicality but it could be bottled in a different facility but this too must be disclosed on the label .

    What percentage of bourbon would you say is column still produced...
    95%, 98%, 99% ?

    • @philipraimondo
      @philipraimondo 5 лет назад

      All bourbons are both - Column and then pot stilled. (Double distilled) There could be one but they are not a distributed brand or at least not a marketed brands. even thought a column still (Coffey Still) is used, Bourbon cannot be distilled above 160 (and I don't know any that go much above 135 or 140) which retains the flavors and maintains the integrity of the ingredients - It is not like a column still for Vodka which goes just above 190...removing most of the ingredients used.

    • @JimmyLeg
      @JimmyLeg 5 лет назад

      @@philipraimondo Thanks for the response Philip. You've got me researching now.
      I found this on Whisky.com:
      "After the alcohol has been extracted from the (column) still, the steam is led through the doubler, a copper pot, where a catalytic conversion takes place which improves the taste of the whiskey. Many column stills need such a doubler since the column floors aren't made of copper. In copper pot stills, as can be found in Scotland, a continuous catalytic conversion takes place. With column stills that lack copper parts, the distillate must be brought into contact with copper externally. That's what the doublers are for.The vapour is then led into the condenser where it liquefies again and has now become raw whiskey, which the Americans call 'white dog'."
      This doesn't seem to be double distilled as much as just having the vapour run through a copper vessel prior to being condensed. Right?
