I’ve been using this throw release throw the top the past 2 weeks since I first came across a one of your videos explaining it. So I gave it a try it took me a while to get used to it and finally I got the feel. Once you get that feel and pivot it’s unbelievable absolutely crushed pure iron shots the height of the ball flight is and distance is nothing I have ever experienced. Game changer I will never try another swing again this is all you need. Never new of mike Austin until I seen ur first video 2 wks ago and since then I think I have studied all his videos that are out there. So glad your video came on on my RUclips feed or I would never have known about the throw/release from The top.
OMG!!! BEST VIDEO EVER!!! In a word it’s accumulative, when I first started throwing from the top I wonder how I was going to hit the ball, but like you said the key is to get good at your shift, pivot and turn, when I did I began to feel the power and the snap, but like anything it took a while to change old habits but I’ll never have to change my swing again! You are the BEST OF THE BEST!!
I'm getting there with this style by adding all the little tidbits one by one. 30* posture from hips (putting butt weight a little back of heels) Right hip back at 45 degree angle (spine on top of right leg), left knee coming in ( i use to do that naturally and they told me to stop lol), right leg straightening a bit, thinking of right side pole and left side a gate closing and then opening, setting club at top with thumbs, loose shoulders and then releasing (throwing it) thru impact (thinking of the leading edge going square just under ball) works great as long as i don't turn my right hand OVER but rather keep it straighter thru impact. Have to get better or more precise at lower body pivot timing and consistent motion to make the swing even more effortless. Now I'll add more focus on the low spot to get even more consistent contact, thanks. 6 bogeys, 1 double (210 par 3), 1 birdie & 10 pars today. I see sub par rounds coming this year. I'm thinking a big benifit of this swing is i feel like I'm trying less but still getting max distances (especially driver) AND believe that's leading to less soreness after playing? Been working at it just under a month (with practice & play) and joined the site 2 weeks ago. Steve feel free to make any corrections to the thoughts and steps I'm taking. And keep the videos coming, they're all helpful, thanks.
This is awesome I can hit hit high towering shots with a 4-5 iron now with distance 5 iron 190 to 195 and 205-210 with four iron. My driving iron has a towering ball flight 220+ carry now
@Steve Pratt Golf This was absolutely fantastic ... I appreciate it when you demonstrate these approaches with long irons especially the 3 iron so please don't stop ... The only criticism I could offer is comedial ... the title of the video ... Maybe you should have called it "The Video Golf Equipment Manufacturers Don't Want You to See" These golf swing techniques and fundamentals transcend any equipment ... Thanks for your patience and effort!!! i[f you have time can you post the elevation you were getting on your 3i iron]
Thanks for the tip/video, Steve. I always set the club with a forward lean, but I never get the distance like yours. You mentioned that the club head bottoms out at the stick/heal. In your swing, just at the impact, you are tilting away from the target and the head is behind the ball. Is this the reason why you are getting the lowest point Infront of the ball? I don't get a divot at all but I am not scooping either. The one difference I observed is the ball position. I keep the ball just off-of center for 6,7,8 irons and at the center for 9,pw,sw. This week, I will try your method and see.
Steve, your earlier tip of ball position at tie for driver and at heal for 5 wood has increased distance by 15% .Awesome and now will adjust ball position of Iron shots. Is it wise to cork the wrist early for power? Latif
I've been actively molding my swing to the Austin Plain for the last 10 months. bio-mechanically its the best swing plain I've come across & have had no issues with the irons at all.... interesting in the process i've picked up about 15mph of speed...I was struggling at 112-115 & now for lesser effort I'm at 126-130 & no I've not done any speed training for this yet. I'm thinking I can get back into late 130s to early 140s in perfect balance for once...BTW I'm 53yrs old & on chemo for the last 14yrs (and yes it does play havoc with muscle strength & flexibility)...if I can pull this off then a younger fitter person can do wonders....just one regret; found Mr. Austins methodology too late in life:(
Steve if you just stood straight up looking at the camera without a pivot or chest turn and folded your right arm back, where would you throw your club force to? Straight ahead down your right arm line towards the camera?
I do like the Austin style videos. I really wish you could do something about the lighting, no not because your handsome but it makes the video easier to watch. Just watched a Cogorno/Malaska video which showed the Mike Austin flap release however, Malaska keeps rotation of forearm negligible. Any comments on this technique?
In the one of the previous video about the driver you said your stance width was about 12-13 inches or something that will give you a stable finish on the left post , however in your irons swing in this video appears to be more than 13 inches both for 8 iron and 3 iron. Can you please clarify? I do hold Mike Austin in the highest regard for what he understood and shared about the golf swing. He was undeniably a long and accurate hitter of the golf ball , unfortunately though a lot seems seems gets lost in translation.
14 inches at the heel and 18 inches at the toes for driver. Progressively less for other clubs. Those are my measurements...yours may vary depending on hip width and height.
Paul Tompkins sounds about right for me. Maybe slightly forward or back depending on trajectory desired. Steve really explained ball position perfectly here. Great video!
I smashed 3 and 4 wood today with Steve’s video advice on the MA swing. Still confused a bit on the pickle jar war and who it is who advocates twisting the jar not the lid. I’ve never hit my 9 iron this long and put it next to the flag before and my fairway woods for that matter. We are talking 60 year old woods with persimmon heads, hitting them straight like a laser and longer than my long. The compound pivot was my new move as I have not yet perfected the release because I don’t know if it’s a sideways hammer or a knuckles-toward-ball hand action. But I wish I had known about Mike Austin 15 years ago. Steve is a great teacher of the swing.
I just got thru practicing your driver swing. I think I was too close to the ball to lift my elbow correctly . Idk yet tho . elbow did feel better out when i wasnt so close to the ball. What kills me I can hit up to 150 yard shot a million different different ways. I just cant stop switching instead of picking one and dialing it in. I keep having moments like owe that what bobby jones must have felt or owe this is what arnold palmer must have felt theres so many different ways that work great. I'm narrowing it down
How does this work with a single length set of irons? Would they all be addressed with a 7 iron shaft lean and ball position at address? (let's assume it's a 7 iron length set) or would just the shaft lean change between clubs/lofts?
In the Mike Austin swing, at impact, where should the lead shoulder be in relation to the lead hip and ankle? Should the shoulder line up with the hip and ankle?
The only question I have is club face, even though the bottom of your arc is consistent, by moving your ball around you’re catching the ball on a different part of the arc.
Yes exactly! This controls my angle of attack to match the design of each club and it's leading edge. Of course you will have to progressively aim your feet left as the clubs get shorter.
isn't the release like a hockey slap??? NO time to think about where and how your club is leaning. Just throw the club out from the top and rotate to the target.
The clearest and most concise explanation and demonstration of this multi dimensional aspect of the swing. Thanks!
Hi steve ( your simply the best, better then all the rest, better then anyone, better then anyone I’ve ever meet ). Good job coach. 👌🏌️

That's awesome Ryan!!! Way to go.

Your videos are really refreshing and not overly complex. Thanks for the great content!
Never heard that information on the low point before. Can’t wait to try this tomorrow.
Let us know!
This is an absolute game changer.. Thank you Steve!!
Cheers Phil!
Thanks Steve this throw the from the top with correct pivot is where swing should be
Great video Steve! So many golden explanations. Loved the ball position details. Thanks!
Thanks Ray! Birdies all day!
For me, the chair drill is the BEST!. The foundation of a good turn and pivot! Great video Steve!!
1st comment. Awesome. I've been curious about the details of how the Austin swing style applies to irons. Thanks.
Thanks for the lesson.
I love the shout-out!
Just what I was looking for
Scott
Wonderful explanation, thanks.

That's awesome!
This was really excellent. Nice notes and pauses. Only suggestion (possibly) is a brief mention of the left arm touching left pec). Thanks!

Oooohhhh! This is great. All along I've been trying to hold my lag. Geeeez
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video, where do you feel the tension in your arm, do you try to keep it straight?
Been waiting for this for the irons. Thanks
Cheers Ezell!
Hi Steve I wasn’t waiting for hips return to chair then throw the club. I was throwing it to early
Thanks for the tip/video, Steve. I always set the club with a forward lean, but I never get the distance like yours. You mentioned that the club head bottoms out at the stick/heal. Great explanation. Do you even throw out with a sand wedge ? Erik
Yes unless you are going for a low skipper...then I would keep my right hand in dorsiflexion a bit longer.
Hi Steve. Great video. How do you keep from early extension while pivoting to 8 o’clock with left hip?

Wow that's amazing! I would love to see your swing. If you'd like, send me a clip to Steve@hititlonger.com.
Give me a couple of days.... I'm just waiting for my golf course to reopen.
112 to 115 huh ... let me get my violin out .. I would love that struggle😜
Steve if you just stood straight up looking at the camera without a pivot or chest turn and folded your right arm back, where would you throw your club force to? Straight ahead down your right arm line towards the camera?
The throw (I believe) is back, but would really appreciate Steve’s explanation.
Makes sense.
I’m not getting consistent hits throwing the club after using the left heal. Also no forward shaft lean at impact for an iron
Sorry John...I fumbled the lighting this time. It was the 4th video of the session and the sun kept moving without me adjusting.
The arms must roll but as you flap they are rolling pretty slowly.
Steve Pratt Golf once you get your lighting mastered I’m confident your subscribers will grow. You deliver a good message on a great product!
Do you throw with the left thumb or right fore finger?
Everything!
In the one of the previous video about the driver you said your stance width was about 12-13 inches or something that will give you a stable finish on the left post , however in your irons swing in this video appears to be more than 13 inches both for 8 iron and 3 iron. @@Inmotion70 thanks. Got it!!
Thank you for your video. 3 wood at the low point?
Paul Tompkins sounds about right for me. Maybe slightly forward or back depending on trajectory desired. Steve really explained ball position perfectly here. Great video!
Much depends on the lie. I can hit +1 if the ball is sitting up or first cut, but down -2 if in a depression or tightly mown fairway.
Steve Pratt Golf when you say +1 and down -2 is that in °’s?
@@alldayrays7110 Yep.

Hmm...never thought about it. Judging by the thumbnail of this video I'd say it lines up vertically.
Thank you.

Watch today's video, coming in a few minutes.
👍👍👍
They don't know until they actually feel the no divot shots straighter down the fairway.
