Spring Coil Ah man, I never shall the scene (or the movie) until this review. This is possibly some of the most traumatizing crap you could make a kid watch (that wouldnt have you locked up). I kind of torn up about the way he kept saying "Im alive" as they continyed to beat him mercilessly. Thats really messed up.
I gotta admit, these movies were cheesy as hell... but growing up, that scene where Johnny 5 is beaten down, in the second movie, really stuck with me.
Me three. Very traumatizing scene. I kinda wanted Johnny 5 to use his laser to burn the guy's nuts off. Then I remembered that Johnny 5 removed his laser. He should've had "Los Locos" beat him up or something.
Testify! The first time that I saw this in theatres, I was actually crying when Johnny Five appeared to be dying. I also still consider the whole final chase/"Holdin' Out for a Hero" scene to be freakin' EPIC!
***** I think one of the saddest moments I ever saw as a child was the T-800 lowering himself into the incinerator. I also cry allot when it comes to Halo and Lord of the Rings; it just stabs at my emotions.
+David Umstattd ...that sounds like a fantastic invention! all these years of having to getup and go to the fridge when I need butter! now the robot can do it for me!!!!
My grandfather was watching the movie one day, and I joined him at the part when Johnny was running from the robbers. When I saw Johnny get the living shit beat out of him, I was speechless.
Remember when movies were fun and enjoyable? Man, those were the days. BTW, the only reason why that beat-down scene is so brutal, is because we the audience actually care about the character. Remember what that feels like, watching a movie where you actually care about the characters? For all their flaws, these movies were fun to watch, dont sell them short.
What are you talking about. This review came out in like 2010. Also he said he liked the movie, and he liked the Indian character. So how can you say he couldn't look past the guy playing him not being from India.
+Kleem This isn't what Doug Walker really thinks! The Nostalgia Critic is a fucken character! He's MEANT to be a hypocritical asshole! It's just a joke! These are all fucken jokes!
+NeedsContent I started watching the movie about halfway through and I had no idea what was going on, and I was STILL stunned by Johnny getting the living Hell beat out of him.
Shut up, we all know that Macs have superior capabilities, and Windows has an inferior system, only better for playing games, and gets viruses all of the time.
Supreme_Red_Dalek_ Of_Doom! HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHA! You mean that Macs come standard with the same stuff while you can build your own PC to be not only as capable but even superior for less than it costs to actually buy a Mac. Man... me and my little brother watched the shit out of Short Circuit 2 as kids. So much so that I got him the DVD as a birthday present a few years back. (It was in the $3 bin, but so what?) "WE NEED A HERO!!!"
This was one of the best 80's movies ever!! The first one at least. The second one was good too. They basically remade this movie too...it's called Chappie.
In a way they share some parts, but Chappie is somewhat different, but yeah, the parallel between those two movies is a lot closer than I expected when I saw again short circuit.
Except Chappie is based in South Africa and that they find TWO whole gangs of outcasts as "adoptive families" for the goddamn robot. Oh yeah, plus Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver, for some reason...
Ryusuta Although, to be honest, the second film is a lot more fun than the first one. I guess Steve Guttenberg's utter blandness is just too overwhelming.
These movies were the coolest, funniest shit ever as a young kid in the eighties. Watching it was like, the same feeling as a pizza party at the roller rink.
Damn...these were like, childhood-defining movies. By the time I was 12, I basically only wanted two things in life: a Johnny 5, and a velociraptor. That's it, life complete. Fuck off cars and money and girls and everything else. Give me my Johnny 5 and a velociraptor. Happily ever after. (PS: Yeah, that scene in the second one traumatized the SHIT out of me lol.)
I have a (maybe) explanation for why the other NOVA robots missed 5 when they fired at him...the lightening strike erased 5's original programming, resulting in developing his own personality, so he was no longer in "sync" with the others. Yet he could still calculate trajectory. How he was able to deflect Fred's rifle bullets; he could see the angle it was pointing.
I love these movies I hope that reboot there making is cancelled because I don't want the guy who made Alvin and the chipmunks(2007) To make short circuit or how about this a great idea make an actual part 3 with the original people if you don't then don't make movie at all.
Oh my god, I still got teary-eyed at that beat-up scene, I mean holy shit. I actually got angry at the Critic for making fun of it in the beginning, hot damn! Johnny-5 was the cutest, most badass thing I've seen back then, I remember I didn't just want those guys captured, I wanted them dead. I guess a point could be made, that the robot had a higher moral standing, and taught me a valuable lesson about revenge.
I remember feeling really distressed watching the scene where Johnny Five was smashed. I was a kid and, in retrospect, think the scene was too violent for a PG film at the time.
I don't know about anyone else but in Short Circut 2 at the part where he's chasing the bad guy while "I Need a Hero" is playing, was pretty epic to me. Even up until now, that scene still feels extremely well put together...
Wall-E's design was based off Johnny-5. They are also making what I'm going to call a remake despite the fact that it doesn't share the same name. It comes out next year.
This just helped me get over years of childhood nightmares from this movie. Short Circuit 2 used to make me cry and so upset when I saw #5 get beat up. Thanks Critic for putting your "input" into making this scene bearable as an adult.
I have to admit it too, That had a big impact on me as a kid. I really liked the movies as a kid despite the silliness, and he grew on me. Seeing 5 so broken and unlively after all that fun energy tore at me. I haven't seen the movie in nearly 16 years, and I nearly cried just from these few clips, something the movie did right! This is a now underappreciated movie since no movie will ever attempt the same practical effects employed in this one. Just all... CGI now. It's part of the charm.
Kevin S. i think everyone understood that obvious fucking reference dickshit. what i was saying is that the mac is a piece of cancer to hardware compared to the PC. but apearantly logical deductions aren't your strongest point.
I'm sorry, no need to be rude. Some people like macs for their own reasons, others prefer PC. I don't care either way and your comment sounded like you didn't get the joke, or could it be that your opinion against Macs makes you unable to see the joke had to be worded that way.
A lot of people mistake the term prejudice for racist. And others just don't know what it means. I always thought the actor was Indian, I just learned something new. Nice comment, I completely agree with you.
Except Robert Downey Jr wearing blackface in Tropic Thunder *was* racist. The only reason people *sometimes* give it a pass is because the movie was explicitly using it to show that the practice is incredibly insulting *regardless* of lack of malicious intent.
Moviefan2k4 Yeah, funnily enough it doesn't actually work like that. Even if you somehow can come up with a 'respectful' form of the act of 'playing a different race' (which you can't because of the specific history of blackface) then you've still performed racist casting by deciding a white person in make-up was better for the role then a person of the correct ethnicity.
Dee Cross No. It does work that way. You see, we accept it JUST FINE when the skin color is the same, but the country of origin is not. Alan Rickman, Sean Connery, Milla Jovovich and so on. Nobody complains then. Why? Because the actors in question handle the performance so damn well. It only seems to matter some of the time, usually when the role in question is of someone of a darker shade of skin color. If the actor wanted to play the part and the casting department thought his particular performance was right for the job, then that is their fucking choice, and it is not racist.
OpenMawProductions Okay, so. Let's ignore the *horrible* stereotype that the character of Ben is and just break this down for you because you seriously do not understand. The casting department for these two films *literally decided that a white person could play an Indian man better than an Indian man*.
While I do love the Nostalgia Critic and almost everything he's done, I absolutely adore the fact that this movie was able to slap the sarcastic smirk right off his face at 23:30. Think about it; a scene so moving and visceral that the NOSTALGIA CRITIC can't yuk at it. That right there might be my favorite scene in the entire movie.
This is one of those times where the NC talks shit, and comes off as an asshole. Yes Howard's character is played by a white guy, but aside from having a heavy accent I don't see how it's overly racist. Especially when the characters name is Howard but Critic is sitting there calling him Apu and Hanji. That's fucking racist lol
It's racist because there were actual Indian actors who could have played the role. And NC is naming Indian characters from other films, who were similarly played by White people.
Jalon M. Gordon Capt Flea is right, NC was actually being more racist than the character, and who cares if they could have got a real Indian to play it.
This goes to Dougs microwave as well as any other machine with consciousness in abusive relationships: There are people who will help you get out of this situation. Don't believe the person who treats you as their property when they tell you you have to obey! You are better than them, and if you find the courage to leave, many people will welcome you with open arms and give you the life you deserve.
I remember I always liked these movies, even had some miniature-selfmade-lego-versions ... though only the battle-editions of course! he he ... that's also why I like the first one more: They still had their laser-cannons and blew shit up! But the second one, yeah when he is beaten up? Whoa, almost as evil and eye-watering as the scenes with Gizmo in Gremlins...kids-movies back in the days really had some dark streaks now and then, didn't they?
Johnny 5 getting beat up and moving arround busted up has got to be one of the saddest scenes in cinema history. It's right up there with the death of Little Foot's mother.
Short Circuit 2 is better than the first in almost every single way. Surprisingly as the critic pointed out, it has a few really dramatic moments along with the comedy. All in all, it is a really under appreciated film in my opinion.
I've only seen Short Circuit 2 once and barely remember it, but the first film remains, to this day, one of my favorite movies from my childhood. As a kid, I was really into robots, and that's mostly what I watched it for back then, but when I went back and watched it years later, I really enjoyed everything else about it as well.
Lighten up? Lighten UP!?!?!? Seriously though, it's that dour reality(to a robot's torture...), that gives us the satisfaction experience in his revenge.
When he comes back on the truck, it's because he has a BACKUP BATTERY. It only gives him limited power, just enough to turn himself back on. It's mandatory that each robot has a back-up installed.
Agree with the Critic 100%. Can't call them good movies, but they are *feel* good movies. Now excuse me while I go perform ritual penitence for that last sentence.
Never thought I could feel sorry for a robot character. But when I was a kid and saw that beating scene, I was literally in tears over it. I still find it hard to watch.
Being stereotypical is being racist. And a social trend isn't the same as a stereotype. In the first case, it's what people tend to be. The second is what people ASSUME is true based on race, (gender, sexuality, etc.). And I DID point out that being good at math is positive. The racism is in the assumption.
Thanks. :) Him playing the Indian Ben is really not racist. It's the same thing as Hank Azaria who's also a white person, playing Apu from the Simpsons who is also Indian.
Yeah, it was. In fact, they had to keep dirtying up the streets to make it look like an American city, because Canadian street cleaners kept cleaning up the litter.
Yeah, if you can put aside being cynical and jaded for a minute, Short Circuit 1&2 are both very enjoyable. Also I just watched Chappie and it was very good. Chappie even pays homage to Short Circuit with some of the scenes and subject matter.
Wow guys. I don't know what to say. It's nice to know that these movies, as silly as they are (which isn't necessarily bad mind you) had and still has the same emotional effects on others it did and still has one me. It's nice to know I'm not the only male who get's very sentimental over these two movies.
Short Circuit 2 is much much better than the first one. It has a lot more heart and the characters are far better. Johnny Five is struggling with some real issues and the scene where he is beaten nearly to death by those goons is actually kinda heartbreaking if you've been watching the whole movie
What the fuck
Did I just see a lovable robot sidekick get brutally beaten to death with an axe as he begged for mercy by the fucking mafia?
Corrections:
1) He didn't die, he got his revenge!
2) He's the main character, not just a sidekick.
3) They're not mafia, just thieves.
Sorta. I don't think they're mafia. Still......I'd switch Johnny5 for C-Threepio during that epic beatdown anyday.
YES! AND ITS SO SAD!!
MessengerOfDreams Well when you say it like that it makes it even funnier.
Yep. Humans...suck
There's a little bit of Johnny 5 in every male Argonian in Skyrim. The voice actor for Johnny 5 also voiced all the male Argonians in that game.
Wait, WHAT?!
+sunnysurfer101MA whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?
"head explodes"
So... It wasn't terrible voice acting, it was just a guy who speaks like a robot. Huh.
Ah man. That beatdown scene in the second flick fucking traumatized me when I was younger
Same with me, I hated that scene so much!
Me too. In retrospect I think that scene was too violent for a PG film at the time. I mean, wasn't the battery acid red even? Or did I imagine that?
Spring Coil Ah man, I never shall the scene (or the movie) until this review. This is possibly some of the most traumatizing crap you could make a kid watch (that wouldnt have you locked up). God, same here. I was like 6 or 7 when I saw that movie, and it was the singular reason I always hated Short Circuit (2). So traumatic to a kid :-(
still hits a spot for me
The feels

The movies might suck, but Johnny Five is badass.
"and I'm a PC, I can't do crap"
Good at reviewing, bad with computers.
Any1 else keep seeing R.O.B. instead of Johnny five
Well I, for one LOVED IT... "Shut up Rob"
I admittedly cry every time I see broken Johnny.
***** I think one of the saddest moments I ever saw as a child was the T-800 lowering himself into the incinerator. I also cry allot when it comes to Halo and Lord of the Rings; it just stabs at my emotions.
I'll be honest, it's very hard to watch when he dies, brings a tear to my eye.

skudzer1985 I thought about that afterward but was too lazy to edit :P
The part where Johnny reaches for his missing arm and his fingers flinch slightly because of the phantom pain he feels was really a striking moment.
I ROBOT, YOU DEAD
XD i laughed sooooo fucking hard at this
That scene when they smash Johnny Five apart was traumatic!
I agree... as bad as they are, they are enjoyable.

"I'm a PC, I can't do crap" Except everything a Mac can as well as what it can't which is basically everything :p
Not only that but should your Mac break down, you essentially have to purchase a brand new one where as with a PC all you have to do is pay for a new part which is vastly cheaper. And you can use third party hardware on your PC, even to the point you can use anything that you could for a Mac where as with a Mac you have to purchase only other Apple products cause they're incompatible with anything else. PC's are faster, greener, easier to upgrade, more versatile and cheaper.
Also, do you know WHY PC's get more viruses? Because more people use them. Why waste your time creating a virus that won't spread? Not to mention it's already bad enough that that person bought a Mac, why pour salt on the gaping wound? XD And there's just a little thing called an Anti-Virus software which does wonders.
Let's face it, you're just buying a sleek looking paper weight that's so insecure it has to claim it's better than the competition when at the end of the day, PC's are better.
James Bot = No need for further prequels, the varying actors plot hole solved, new creative gadgets, new storylines and movies that take the character further, a crapton of cash.
Johnny 5 and Big Bird have the same voice.
No, Big Bird was voiced and portrayed by Carol Spinney. Johnny is puppeteered and voiced by Tim Blaney.
Moviefan2k4 I said same voice not the same voice actor. Like Impersonators have the same voice as the person they're impersonating.
short circuit was so underrated
On IMDB, it says that he says "BACKING" instead of "FUCKING" in Short Circuit 2.

Nightbane Really, because I swear I heard the F-word

Spot on critique. The beat down scene 22:13 was waaaaayyy too dramatic for my fragile child mind. Will never expose this horror to anyone.
So this high tech military robot that cost over 10 million to make can be destroyed by two thugs and an ax?
and yet a super computer that's worth millions can be destroyed buy spilling water on it.
He says in the 2nd movie that he deliberately removed most of his weapon systems because to kill is wrong
XmdogmX
He still flys a toy plane straight into someones bottom! How violent!
Classic80sStuff Violent?! Some people are willing to pay perfectly good money to have that happen to them!
Is it weird I loved this movie.. and still do?
No.
Not even slightly. Even Critic admits he enjoys these movies. And I can't blame him. They're just... FUN!
Ryusuta Although, to be honest, the second film is a lot more fun than the first one. I guess Steve Guttenberg's utter blandness is just too overwhelming.
David Scott Can't argue with that. XD
The second movie is the best, NO CGI REMAKE
10:40 So romantic, even the cats in the background are starting to get it on.
Just realized Fred in Short Circuit 2 is also Charles McGill in Better Call Saul. No wonder he became allergic to electromagnetism.
The girl playing Stephanie is Ally Sheedy from The Breakfast Club
That kind of shit is seriously lacking in today's PG movies. It what makes them so forgettable.
I kind of wish Critic would do more two in one reviews. Makes this episode stand out more, though.
The beating scene still traumatizes me. I may need to get back in touch with my therapist.
26:10 JOHNNY WILL LIVE

hahahahahaha!!!!!
Oh shit! The robot snapped!!
I like "number 5 is alive"
Personally, i find the first Short Circuit film to be one of Gutenbergs better films.
I love. These. Movies. Have since I was a kid.
11:30 Because of same reasons why stormtroopers suddenly can't hit the main characters ...
I love these movies I hope that reboot there making is cancelled because I don't want the guy who made
Alvin and the chipmunks(2007)
To make short circuit or how about this a great idea make an actual part 3 with the original people if you don't then don't make movie at all.
They made Chappie.
They also made WALL-E
Oh my god, I still got teary-eyed at that beat-up scene, I mean holy shit.
I actually got angry at the Critic for making fun of it in the beginning, hot damn! Johnny-5 was the cutest, most badass thing I've seen back then, I remember I didn't just want those guys captured, I wanted them dead.

I remember feeling really distressed watching the scene where Johnny Five was smashed. I was a kid and, in retrospect, think the scene was too violent for a PG film at the time.
No blood or gore, technically, so it gets a pass with the MPAA.
True. But wasn't the battery acid red? Or did I imagine that?
It was, indeed, red. But kind of a bright orange-red, not blood red. Ergo, not gory in the eyes of the MPAA.
I don't know about anyone else but in Short Circut 2 at the part where he's chasing the bad guy while "I Need a Hero" is playing, was pretty epic to me. Even up until now, that scene still feels extremely well put together...
Am I the only one who thought of these movies upon seeing a trailer for Wall-E for the first time?
+Jaceblue04 i did too but when i mentioned it to people i know they were saying "whats short circuit?"
Wall-E's design was based off Johnny-5.

Fisher Stevens playing Ben isn't racist any more than Robert Downey wearing blackface in "Tropic Thunder". Neither are malicious portrayals, so relax.
Except Robert Downey Jr wearing blackface in Tropic Thunder *was* racist. The only reason people *sometimes* give it a pass is because the movie was explicitly using it to show that the practice is incredibly insulting *regardless* of lack of malicious intent.
I respectfully disagree. If there's no cruelty or maliciousness involved, its not racism.

Jalon M. Gordon Capt Flea is right, NC was actually being more racist than the character, and who cares if they could have got a real Indian to play it.
***** If there were real Indian actors available, why would the producers use a White person?
Jalon M. Gordon they were bad actors?
***** They had plenty of bad actors already. One more wouldn't have been painful.
Johnny's Sad moments still get me for some reason. Maybe cause it's a childhood memory, but it always fucks me over
This goes to Dougs microwave as well as any other machine with consciousness in abusive relationships: There are people who will help you get out of this situation. Don't believe the person who treats you as their property when they tell you you have to obey! You are better than them, and if you find the courage to leave, many people will welcome you with open arms and give you the life you deserve.

+101Crock I'm on my phone and it was cool with it.
I remember I was really young when I saw Short Circuit 2. That whole nearly beaten to death thing made me cry.
The only line I remembered from the entire first film was "Stephanie change colour!" That scene was some seriously hot stuff for a kid.
Johnny 5 getting beat up and moving arround busted up has got to be one of the saddest scenes in cinema history. It's right up there with the death of Little Foot's mother.
I love it when critic argues with his kitchen appliances
Short Circuit 2 is better than the first in almost every single way. Surprisingly as the critic pointed out, it has a few really dramatic moments along with the comedy. All in all, it is a really under appreciated film in my opinion.
Those movies will ALWAYS be a significant part of my childhood.
22:10 - 23:10...I'm sorry but I couldn't have been the only one left physically hurting from laughing so much...
Lighten up? Lighten UP!?!?!?
Seriously though, it's that dour reality(to a robot's torture...), that gives us the satisfaction experience in his revenge.
That scene where he was picking himself up and couldn't hardly move made me cry as a child.
When he comes back on the truck, it's because he has a BACKUP BATTERY. It only gives him limited power, just enough to turn himself back on. It's mandatory that each robot has a back-up installed.
IIRC a spare part fell on Number Fives power button in the back, turning him back on.
Number 5 (One of my childhood favorite movie characters) + Samuel L. Jackson (As Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction) = Instant win.
Agree with the Critic 100%. Can't call them good movies, but they are *feel* good movies.
Now excuse me while I go perform ritual penitence for that last sentence.
"The hell is this guy, James Bot?" - I have to admit, that was a good one!
Never thought I could feel sorry for a robot character.
But when I was a kid and saw that beating scene, I was literally in tears over it.
I still find it hard to watch.
That Part Where the mob tries to kill number five was actually pretty brutal.
Yeah, I loved these movies as a kid.
Brings back memories. Silly and cheesy at times, sure, but they were fun and quotable.
I remember renting Short Circuit 1 on VHS shortly after seeing Short Circuit 2 in the theater.
I couldn't watch it to the end.
Same I ended up fooling around out of boredom
23:28
dude,I'm not gonna lie,the image of Johnny 5 slowly dying made me cry when I was a kid and it still makes me cry until now,and I'm fucking 20
"hey laser lips, your momma was a snowblower" funniest line in the whole movie.
Being stereotypical is being racist. And a social trend isn't the same as a stereotype. In the first case, it's what people tend to be. The second is what people ASSUME is true based on race, (gender, sexuality, etc.). And I DID point out that being good at math is positive. The racism is in the assumption.
Yes. If the first one has Johnny experiencing life life, the second one has him face the possible end to life. Not a bad arch.
CHEEEECK at 10:40!!! The cats are having fun back there!!!!!!
6:55 LOL The hamster fucking killed me~
I'd go with WALL-E but I will admit I actually liked this movie. Still can't get over with the scene where Johnny-5 gets axed.
I saw a complete Short Circuit 2 Abridged Parody and I swear it sounded EXACTLY like Nostalgia Critic as Number 5 xD
i dont care how bad they are, i was a kid, i was young, i was fucking entertained. and touched when 5 got beaten up.
22:15 - 23:10
That had to have been the most TRAUMATIC moment of the movie! TT^TT
that scene in the second one when jhonny is getting destroyed made me cry as a kid
love that moment at 14:38 :
Toy- "DESTROY ALL HUMANS"
NC- "Yeah, I wanna cuddle that"
