Had a teacher who, after marking the paper with pencil tearing marks, slowly and gently folded the paper along her marks. Then she folded the paper back and forth a couple times. Then she wet the fold on the back side of the paper with her brush... after that, tearing is a breeze... and leaves a beautiful deckled edge ... I haven’t gotten the courage up to buy a roll yet, but I have used this tearing method for tearing down my larger Arches pad sheets to practice on... (resulting post cards are great 😂) I just found your channel 💖 and am in the process of binge watching 😂 Thanks for being here and sharing your gifts and knowledge with us...

Just found your channel. I have a roll of the same paper. I do like to staple to foam core and stretch. But I also like to make my own block pads by using PVA glue. Rick Surowicz has a video showing how he breaks down a sheet to get the different sizes out of one sheet, which is helpful for smaller sizes with less waste. I love your work and your enthusiasm. Thank you for sharing.
i think another advantage of making your own size vs. buying pre made pads, is that the pre made pads are often not common frame sizes, but you can cut your own to fit common frames!

I think one more disadvantage is the spending amount. Even though it’s cheaper per inch, it’s also a one lump sum of almost $200. I usually buy pads, but found full sheets in online art store and will buy different brands to test and see which I like best. The price is also much cheaper than pads and easier to store and cut. I agree. $200 all at once can be a hindrance. I also did this video a couple years ago....and since then have switched to mostly buying full sheets. My biggest issue with the bulk roll was getting the paper to lay flat. It was a little bit of a hassle. Also there are some other more affordable options for 100% cotton paper, than there were a few years ago. :-) Thanks for the feedback. happy painting!
@@maskofrestrict Arches is the best brand in my opinion. Saunders, Baohong, Fabriano are all superb brands. I definitely would stick to those brands for landscapes and pictures that will have a lot of water and washes on them. They’re 100% cotton and will handle water, layers and will be much easier to fix mistakes. For practicing small illustrations, brushwork and such, you can get a decent pulp paper for watercolor - Canson XL or Montval, Strathmore will work fine. Paper is the only thing you mustn’t sacrifice on quality for painting.

Wow. I paid $180 in February 2020. The price has definitely gone up. I'm sure you will enjoy having all that paper available. It is nice to be able to create whatever size and format sheet you need for your paintings.

In Australia there is a BIG difference between the standard loose sheets of Arches watercolour paper (76cm x 56cm) and the Arches watercolour paper pads - and I believe it is the same worldwide if comments I’ve heard from other artists in Europe and America. Perhaps the watercolour pads are sized differently (sizing refers to the paper being treated internally or externally or both by something like gelatine which helps with absorbancy and prevents the paper from sucking up the paint quickly and allowing you time to play with the pigments before they dry.... Arches watercolour 100% cotton standard loose sheets and rolls are sized both internally AND externally). When questionning the Arches rep here in Brisbane, he agreed that the the paper in the watercolour pads IS NOT the same - despite the loose sheets, rolls and the pads being 300gsm and 100% cotton - which leads me to believe the difference is in the sizing of the paper... If you want to get the watercolour results you want from your Arches paper you are better off buying loose sheets of standard watercolour paper... AND it is sooooooo much cheaper than buying the Arches Watercolour pads...

Thank you so much for this video. I am new to watercolor painting and I really appreciate videos like this one. You show your work surface and I see how you get material from the paper roll. I can also see that buying rolls of paper really would commit me to that weight and type of paper. I probably will be better off buying pads or blocks of paper for nowsince I'm a beginner. I agree. The roll is not for everyone. You need to have some room to work with. However, I am considering buying a paper roller + cutter that you hang on the wall. Then it would be super easy to manage and tear the paper. Haha. Must put it on my list. :-)
Thanks for the video. I flatten the paper by by submerging it into a water bath. This will soften the paper. After that let it completely dry on top of a towel below. It will turn out nicely flattened and did not change the paper quality.
Thanks Raymond. Great tip! I've learned over the years you can also just spray on the inside of the curved surface, and the force created by the paper absorbing the water (and expanding) will cause the paper to just "magically" unroll on its own. However, you should only wet the one side....the "inside." Let it dry and its ready to go. This is the easiest method I have found.
Very comprehensive video, thank you! I did see other methods though for flattening curved paper which doesn't take days. It seems to help spraying water on the backside (or with a sponge), and then heating it. Maybe a regular hair dryer will do... Another method is combining the wetting of the paper with putting weights on it (the method in your video). The water would then quicken the process.

LOL! The way you slammed that giant roll of paper on the table and said "Here's my paper! Let me show you how I use it!" AHA! Bookends! Thank you! I need to keep some bookends near my work area to hold my roll down. I have been using whatever is near me....my laptop, my coffee cup (big mistake), actual books (you'd think bookends would be handy if the books are, but, there you go), pretty much anything that leaves a line on my paper. I actually do have bookends. They have that nice felt on the bottom too so they shouldn't leave lines.........
If I may suggest an alternative, using the Full Imperial size sheets (56x76 cm or 22x30 inches) achieves the same result in terms of money saving with the advantage that they are easier to manage on a table and are already flat. In Germany, where I buy paper, the price per sqm is almost the same. The bulk offers the option for cutting sheets bigger than the imperial size.
Thank you for making this video. I've been trying to decide if I wanted to buy the 22x30 sheets in bulk or just get the bolt. Being in a wheelchair these days, your video has helped me decide that it will be much easier for me to work with the22x30 sheets. Plus you mentioned that if we work with hot or rough press that gets expensive lol. And I do use hot press as well. Have you ever tried making your block? Not to difficult to do. You mentioned you tape your paper down. Have you ever tried saturating your paper on both sides and just let it lay on a board or on your table. It will lay flat. :) God bless.

I made this video about bulk paper years ago. :-) I haven't tried making my own blocks. But I have tried the "wet both sides of the paper" technique. While it works great to keep the paper adhered to the board, I don't like having the paper that wet. Hey there... I got a question for ya, that I can't find the answer for anywhere on the internet... no pressure lol. Iam also a full time professional artist, and also a Bookbinder. I use professional 100% cotton papers for my art, as well for making luxury Hardbound goatskin leather watercolor sketchbooks. I buy a ton of my paper in rolls when available, and imperial sheets if not. If recently run into some Arches 300 lb imperial sheets that are alittle under 1 year old, and I forgot to lay down glassine and archival tissue paper on the bottom an top of the large flat box it came in, for storage on my racks. I just found that the sizing is bad now, because the acid from the cardboard box probably got to it! Now I buy alot more Saunders Waterford in rolls, because that is my favorite paper for my artwork, and I use it for binding and hand marbled papers. Their rolls are much larger than Arches, they come 66" wide and 11 yards long, usually with a extra few feet making close to 12 yards long. The boxes they come in are Like the boxes that Arches come in, EXCEPT Saunders box is labeled as acid free... and their rolls come wrapped completely in crystal plastic wrapping that is acid free and archival. When I buy my rolls of Arches, I keep them on a huge rack in the factory boxes like yours is in. Arches box isn't labeled as acid free anywhere, nor is wrapped like Saunders rolls come in... it just sits in the bare box. Do you know if Arches factory boxes are acid free? I would sure hope so, because it's the only real way to keep it stored without getting harmed. I never really thought about the rolls in the boxes, until I recently came across some 300 lb paper that was ruined by a flat box! I know for a fact that the large flat boxes I keep from places like Blicks, Jerry's etc etc that I get my bulk imperial sheet orders in.. are definitely not acid free, that is why I always take all the paper out and use high density polyethylene uncoated plastic 1st, the 2nd layer of archival glassine, last I use a 3rd layer of archival, acid free tissue paper to completely sandwich the bulk stack of imperial sheet paper inside the flat box for protection while storing. like I said, I've looked all over and can not find that info, if infcact the factory Arches roll boxes are acid free boxes or not?!? That is a great question. I no longer have the box that my bulk Arches watercolor paper came in. So I am unable to check that out for you. @@KrisDeBruineStudio hello, thank you for replying to my comment. I actually have 3 rolls of Arches here in my studio and Bindery, and they are in the boxes. So I have looked inside and out, and its not marked on any of the boxes like my Saunders boxes are. I have reached out to Arches directly, twice actually... and I haven't heard back as of yet. This is driving me nuts lol, I have soooo much paper ( a small fortune) and now iam worried that my Arches rolls are gonna go bad. My studio and Bindery is very heavily filtered through multiple 4 inch thick, merv 13 filters with a secondary carbon filters. I get alot of paper dust, leather dust and such and I can't keep my watercolor paper out... so I must keep them in boxes on big racks. This is a problem that is weighing heavily on my mind now, specially after just moving into my new studio and Bindery... and buying all new stuff for the studio, storage etc etc. And now to have this issue pop up, it is extremely worrying. I just bought some " lineco Ph/acid testing markers" from Amazon, to test the paper to see if it is now acidic, and if so...how much. Thank you again for your reply, I appreciate it.
@@KrisDeBruineStudio well I appreciate it anyway, don't be sorry... you even tried looking online for me, and you didn't have to do that. I got my pH testing markers from Lineco binding Co. today. They are specifically designed to test and reveal pH in all papers, 100% cotton artist papers archival materials for framing art work boxes, binding board aka: grey board/Davy board, etc etc.. so I got my answers today, for myself lol. The Arches boxes are NOT acid free, infact they are very acidic inside and out! The beginning of all three brand new rolls I had stored, the 1st wrap and a half... tested positive for acidity. But beyond that was okay tho, so for now I lined all of the boxes for the rolls exactly how I do it in the flat boxes, with the 3 different layers of polyethylene uncoated plastic, glassine and archival tissue paper. It is just a huge paint in the butt to have to unwrap, and then rewrap the rolls back up... every time I go to get paper from them. It is definitely better than having my exspensive paper stock being destroyed, plus it doesn't stick in the back of my head 24/7. Iam honestly shocked " respected paper manufacturing company " would sell an exspensive paper that is extremely sensitive to acids and other hazards, in a box that is very acidic?! And they never even bothered to answer my simple question...its unreal. Anyways, thank you again and I hope you have a wonderful day 🙂

Hi Paola. The "right" side is the inward facing side. You can also determine the correct side because it is a bit more rough than the back side. This is true for Arches Cold Press 140lb. That wc pad is only 14.43 online from Blick or other online Art stores like Cheap Joes Jerry's Artarama. Michael's and Hobby Lobby will charge about 21.00 - 24.00.
May 2021, I'm seeing about a 28% savings now looking at Blick. That aside, have you seen the change in paper sizing performance in the rolls that people have seen in the sizing on the pads and blocks since the Arches brand changed owners? If the rolls perform like the old sizing, that would be a plus. Thanks.

Hi Kris, lovely video! I have a silly question. I purchased this same paper and am having a hard time determining which side is meant to paint on... Is it the side that is curving in or out? Also, I bought this paper to create a very large piece, about 7 ft tall. I'm seeing comments that I should stretch my paper. I don't use much water in my pieces and have lots of empty negative space. Is it still necessary? I've never stretched paper so I will be looking for videos on this topic next!
Hi Jasmine. The "right" side of the paper in this bulk roll is on the inside. In other words, when the paper is right side up, the sides will be curving up and in. I also find that the right side has a little bit more "tooth" to it -- a little more texture.
To answer your second question. I think it might would be advisable to stretch and secure your paper to a surface before attempting a painting this large. You might want to take the piece of paper, submerge it in a bathtub for 30 seconds, then stretch it out on a surface and staple the edges. Then you will have to let it dry for 24 hours. In that time it will shrink back down and create a tight surface. The fact that you are leaving lots of negative space doesn't change this. In fact, it might make the buckling worse -- in other words you would get waves in the paper in only SOME areas, which might look strange. You might want to give this whole process a practice run. The good thing is you have 30 feet of paper on that roll with which to practice. :-)
@@KrisDeBruineStudio Thank you! I just purchased my first roll of the Arches Rough for a 4' x 5' painting and had similar questions! I'll be using a piece of plywood to stretch mine and paint on but then I'll remove it and use gel medium to glue it to a canvas. This will make it more lightweight and look better on the wall. I've done this for smaller paintings and it worked well!
That's interesting. I can't say I noticed a difference. However, I finished up the last of this big paper roll over two years ago. :-) I have since switched to using Baohong sheets (30"x22") and blocks as my primary watercolor paper. I have several videos on that if you're interested in learning more. My main reason for moving away from the big bulk roll, was that I found it very difficult to flatten the paper. It is pretty stiff and doesn't want to lay flat...even when taped. I got tired of struggling with this. Hope this helps.

Hello! Thanks for watching my videos. I have had my Arches Cold Press Bulk roll for about 1 year and 9 months. I am just now using the last of it. In my opinion, it has the same reaction to water and pigment now, as it did when I first purchased it. I have not experienced any problems with the sizing. It was left stored in the original box in a dry area. :-) Recently, I have also started using flat Imperial size sheets and I like them very much because they lie flat. Thanks!!
Hello, do you happen to know what the diameter of the full roll is? I’ve been trying to find this info online but can’t seem to find it. I’m planning a trip where I can buy the roll and I plan to bring it back in a plastic tube so the diameter is of importance when planning how to transport it. Sorry. I don't have this roll any longer. I used all the paper up!! So I am unable to measure it. However, if my memory is correct, the roll was about 10" in diameter. But I can't tell you for sure. Of course, it could be rolled up tighter, if necessary. However, this might increase the curvature of the paper. One of the big reasons I didn't buy another roll of this....is the curvature of the paper....which I found a little difficult to deal with. I buy my paper in Imperial sheets now -- or blocks for plein air.
Are those really Amazon prices? There may be the main problem. That exact Arches pad you show is $17.60 at my local art store today. Probably cheaper 2 years ago plus you may find discounts at times making it even cheaper. The roll is great but price difference is minimal between roll and pad at a good art store. Even the 11x16 pad is only $28.50.
Do you care about "right side wrong side" issues? I know a lot of instructors advise making sure you see the watermark facing up correctly. I'm curious what you think about that. Thanks very much for the video!
I've painted on both sides....and honestly, I don't see a big difference. However, I prefer painting on the more textured side of the paper. I like texture, so I want to take advantage of that. I paint mostly on Baohong paper, which has a more pronounced texture on the "right" or "up" side. If I were you, I'd experiment. I think the most important "rules" in art, are the ones we discover for ourselves, as we gain more and more experience. Have fun!!
Thats a great idea. I found the hardest part of using bulk paper was cutting/ripping it down to size. It takes a bit of time, as you saw in the video. This paper cutter idea is great. Thanks for sharing.

The inner side of the roll is the "right" side. If you are unsure, you can also tell by looking at the texture. The "right" side of the paper has a slightly more pronounced texture. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Hi! Thanks for watching. I don't ever stretch my paper because I don't paint very large. My typical format is 9" x 12" or sometimes 11" x 14". I simply tape the paper to a board and start painting. No stretching required. However, if I was going to paint in a large format (16" x 24" or larger), I might consider stretching the paper. The buckling issue seems to get worse the larger the paper. Hope this helps.
I typically paint 18x24 and while there is some warping it isn’t too bad, I just tape my edges. Alternatively I occasionally do my first big wash then wet the back once dry (that mostly flattens it) it is really personal opinion so I suggest experimenting
I've noticed prices going up on all types of watercolor paper lately. Maybe it is due to COVID-19 and supply chain issues. I hope you find what works best for you!
You do want to watch prices on these vs pads or blocks at places like Blick too. For instance, right now if you were to look at the pads of cold pressed in 10x14 you can get it for $18 which is $1.50/sheet since 12 come in a pad. A roll gets you 108 sheets of 10x14 and they are $166.18 right now which comes out to $1.54/sheet. Not a huge difference, but for the extra effort you’d like to see some savings. If flexibility with sheet sizes is important to you, though, then it is still probably worth it to get the roll.

Yes. This video was made about three years ago. In that time, the price of cotton paper has increased dramatically. It is even more expensive outside of the USA. I hope you can find a good deal where you are.
Great question. Yes. Of course you can cut it with scissors. But many watercolor artists prefer the deckled edge that is achieved when you rip the paper. I prefer the look of the ripped paper, even if it is a bit more work.
What I do is: using a metal square ruler to make an initial 'line' on the paper, ( not a cut) then I fold it backwards and forwards a few times on that line. It's then surprisingly easy to tear the paper on that fold, without even a ruler! I use loose, big sheets of Arches, though, not a roll. You look very comfortable tearing off with the metal ruler, probably by having done it lots of times, but I would definitely move the ruler and end up with wonky pages.😏 Thanks for the the info of pros and cons. I'm also planning to make my own watercolour Arches sketchbook , in a size I like, with hand ripped paper, ever considered that? I can never find good sketchbooks, have you? Any tips there? Making your own could be an added advantage! ☺️

Weird question…. But does watercolor paper “expire”? And I’m ONLY asking this bizarre question because Denise from In Liquid Color said in one of her older videos that she had some old paper and she was concerned it “wasn’t good anymore.” I was so confused and that always stuck with me. I had no idea what she meant. I left a comment asking what she meant by that and she never replied. I highly doubt 100% cotton paper can go bad so I wish I knew what she was suggesting. I have tons of old paper that’s a few years old and I really really don’t want to think it’s not good anymore
It took me 2.5 years to go through this big bulk roll of Arches, and it was fine right up to the end. Of course, I stored it in a dry place. I'm certain the environment could affect the paper if you aren't careful. But, I apply some common sense and don't seem to have any problems.

I think one more disadvantage is the spending amount. Even though it’s cheaper per inch, it’s also a one lump sum of almost $200. I usually buy pads, but found full sheets in online art store and will buy different brands to test and see which I like best. The price is also much cheaper than pads and easier to store and cut. I agree. $200 all at once can be a hindrance. I also did this video a couple years ago....and since then have switched to mostly buying full sheets. My biggest issue with the bulk roll was getting the paper to lay flat. It was a little bit of a hassle. @@maskofrestrict Arches is the best brand in my opinion. Saunders, Baohong, Fabriano are all superb brands. I definitely would stick to those brands for landscapes and pictures that will have a lot of water and washes on them. They’re 100% cotton and will handle water, layers and will be much easier to fix mistakes. For practicing small illustrations, brushwork and such, you can get a decent pulp paper for watercolor - Canson XL or Montval, Strathmore will work fine. Paper is the only thing you mustn’t sacrifice on quality for painting.

In Australia there is a BIG difference between the standard loose sheets of Arches watercolour paper (76cm x 56cm) and the Arches watercolour paper pads - and I believe it is the same worldwide if comments I’ve heard from other artists in Europe and America. Perhaps the watercolour pads are sized differently (sizing refers to the paper being treated internally or externally or both by something like gelatine which helps with absorbancy and prevents the paper from sucking up the paint quickly and allowing you time to play with the pigments before they dry.... Arches watercolour 100% cotton standard loose sheets and rolls are sized both internally AND externally). When questionning the Arches rep here in Brisbane, he agreed that the the paper in the watercolour pads IS NOT the same - despite the loose sheets, rolls and the pads being 300gsm and 100% cotton - which leads me to believe the difference is in the sizing of the paper... If you want to get the watercolour results you want from your Arches paper you are better off buying loose sheets of standard watercolour paper... AND it is sooooooo much cheaper than buying the Arches Watercolour pads...

I agree. The roll is not for everyone. You need to have some room to work with. However, I am considering buying a paper roller + cutter that you hang on the wall. Then it would be super easy to manage and tear the paper. Haha. Must put it on my list. :-)

Thanks for the video. I flatten the paper by by submerging it into a water bath. This will soften the paper. After that let it completely dry on top of a towel below. It will turn out nicely flattened and did not change the paper quality.
Thanks Raymond. Great tip! I've learned over the years you can also just spray on the inside of the curved surface, and the force created by the paper absorbing the water (and expanding) will cause the paper to just "magically" unroll on its own. However, you should only wet the one side....the "inside." Let it dry and its ready to go. This is the easiest method I have found.

Very comprehensive video, thank you! I did see other methods though for flattening curved paper which doesn't take days. It seems to help spraying water on the backside (or with a sponge), and then heating it. Maybe a regular hair dryer will do... Another method is combining the wetting of the paper with putting weights on it (the method in your video). The water would then quicken the process.

I need to keep some bookends near my work area to hold my roll down. I have been using whatever is near me....my laptop, my coffee cup (big mistake), actual books (you'd think bookends would be handy if the books are, but, there you go), pretty much anything that leaves a line on my paper. I actually do have bookends. They have that nice felt on the bottom too so they shouldn't leave lines.........

If I may suggest an alternative, using the Full Imperial size sheets (56x76 cm or 22x30 inches) achieves the same result in terms of money saving with the advantage that they are easier to manage on a table and are already flat. In Germany, where I buy paper, the price per sqm is almost the same. The bulk offers the option for cutting sheets bigger than the imperial size.

Thank you for making this video. I've been trying to decide if I wanted to buy the 22x30 sheets in bulk or just get the bolt. Being in a wheelchair these days, your video has helped me decide that it will be much easier for me to work with the22x30 sheets. Plus you mentioned that if we work with hot or rough press that gets expensive lol. And I do use hot press as well. Have you ever tried making your block? Not to difficult to do. You mentioned you tape your paper down. Have you ever tried saturating your paper on both sides and just let it lay on a board or on your table. It will lay flat. :) God bless.

I made this video about bulk paper years ago. :-) I haven't tried making my own blocks. But I have tried the "wet both sides of the paper" technique. While it works great to keep the paper adhered to the board, I don't like having the paper that wet. Hey there... I got a question for ya, that I can't find the answer for anywhere on the internet... no pressure lol. Iam also a full time professional artist, and also a Bookbinder. I use professional 100% cotton papers for my art, as well for making luxury Hardbound goatskin leather watercolor sketchbooks. I buy a ton of my paper in rolls when available, and imperial sheets if not. If recently run into some Arches 300 lb imperial sheets that are alittle under 1 year old, and I forgot to lay down glassine and archival tissue paper on the bottom an top of the large flat box it came in, for storage on my racks. I just found that the sizing is bad now, because the acid from the cardboard box probably got to it! Now I buy alot more Saunders Waterford in rolls, because that is my favorite paper for my artwork, and I use it for binding and hand marbled papers. Their rolls are much larger than Arches, they come 66" wide and 11 yards long, usually with a extra few feet making close to 12 yards long. The boxes they come in are Like the boxes that Arches come in, EXCEPT Saunders box is labeled as acid free... and their rolls come wrapped completely in crystal plastic wrapping that is acid free and archival. When I buy my rolls of Arches, I keep them on a huge rack in the factory boxes like yours is in. Arches box isn't labeled as acid free anywhere, nor is wrapped like Saunders rolls come in... it just sits in the bare box. Do you know if Arches factory boxes are acid free? I would sure hope so, because it's the only real way to keep it stored without getting harmed. I never really thought about the rolls in the boxes, until I recently came across some 300 lb paper that was ruined by a flat box! I know for a fact that the large flat boxes I keep from places like Blicks, Jerry's etc etc that I get my bulk imperial sheet orders in.. are definitely not acid free, that is why I always take all the paper out and use high density polyethylene uncoated plastic 1st, the 2nd layer of archival glassine, last I use a 3rd layer of archival, acid free tissue paper to completely sandwich the bulk stack of imperial sheet paper inside the flat box for protection while storing. like I said, I've looked all over and can not find that info, if infcact the factory Arches roll boxes are acid free boxes or not?!? That is a great question. I no longer have the box that my bulk Arches watercolor paper came in. So I am unable to check that out for you. @@KrisDeBruineStudio hello, thank you for replying to my comment. I actually have 3 rolls of Arches here in my studio and Bindery, and they are in the boxes. So I have looked inside and out, and its not marked on any of the boxes like my Saunders boxes are. I have reached out to Arches directly, twice actually... and I haven't heard back as of yet. This is driving me nuts lol, I have soooo much paper ( a small fortune) and now iam worried that my Arches rolls are gonna go bad. My studio and Bindery is very heavily filtered through multiple 4 inch thick, merv 13 filters with a secondary carbon filters. I get alot of paper dust, leather dust and such and I can't keep my watercolor paper out... so I must keep them in boxes on big racks. This is a problem that is weighing heavily on my mind now, specially after just moving into my new studio and Bindery... and buying all new stuff for the studio, storage etc etc. And now to have this issue pop up, it is extremely worrying. I just bought some " lineco Ph/acid testing markers" from Amazon, to test the paper to see if it is now acidic, and if so...how much. Thank you again for your reply, I appreciate it.

@@KrisDeBruineStudio well I appreciate it anyway, don't be sorry... you even tried looking online for me, and you didn't have to do that. I got my pH testing markers from Lineco binding Co. today. They are specifically designed to test and reveal pH in all papers, 100% cotton artist papers archival materials for framing art work boxes, binding board aka: grey board/Davy board, etc etc.. so I got my answers today, for myself lol. The Arches boxes are NOT acid free, infact they are very acidic inside and out! The beginning of all three brand new rolls I had stored, the 1st wrap and a half... tested positive for acidity. But beyond that was okay tho, so for now I lined all of the boxes for the rolls exactly how I do it in the flat boxes, with the 3 different layers of polyethylene uncoated plastic, glassine and archival tissue paper. It is just a huge paint in the butt to have to unwrap, and then rewrap the rolls back up... every time I go to get paper from them. It is definitely better than having my exspensive paper stock being destroyed, plus it doesn't stick in the back of my head 24/7. Iam honestly shocked " respected paper manufacturing company " would sell an exspensive paper that is extremely sensitive to acids and other hazards, in a box that is very acidic?! And they never even bothered to answer my simple question...its unreal. Anyways, thank you again and I hope you have a wonderful day 🙂

Hi Paola. The "right" side is the inward facing side. You can also determine the correct side because it is a bit more rough than the back side. This is true for Arches Cold Press 140lb. Hi Kris, lovely video! I have a silly question. I purchased this same paper and am having a hard time determining which side is meant to paint on... Is it the side that is curving in or out?
Also, I bought this paper to create a very large piece, about 7 ft tall. I'm seeing comments that I should stretch my paper. I don't use much water in my pieces and have lots of empty negative space. Is it still necessary? I've never stretched paper so I will be looking for videos on this topic next!
Hi Jasmine. The "right" side of the paper in this bulk roll is on the inside. In other words, when the paper is right side up, the sides will be curving up and in. I also find that the right side has a little bit more "tooth" to it -- a little more texture.
To answer your second question. I think it might would be advisable to stretch and secure your paper to a surface before attempting a painting this large. You might want to take the piece of paper, submerge it in a bathtub for 30 seconds, then stretch it out on a surface and staple the edges. Then you will have to let it dry for 24 hours. In that time it will shrink back down and create a tight surface. The fact that you are leaving lots of negative space doesn't change this. In fact, it might make the buckling worse -- in other words you would get waves in the paper in only SOME areas, which might look strange. You might want to give this whole process a practice run. The good thing is you have 30 feet of paper on that roll with which to practice. :-)
@@KrisDeBruineStudio Thank you! I just purchased my first roll of the Arches Rough for a 4' x 5' painting and had similar questions! I'll be using a piece of plywood to stretch mine and paint on but then I'll remove it and use gel medium to glue it to a canvas. This will make it more lightweight and look better on the wall. I've done this for smaller paintings and it worked well!

That's interesting. I can't say I noticed a difference. However, I finished up the last of this big paper roll over two years ago. :-) I have since switched to using Baohong sheets (30"x22") and blocks as my primary watercolor paper. I have several videos on that if you're interested in learning more. My main reason for moving away from the big bulk roll, was that I found it very difficult to flatten the paper. It is pretty stiff and doesn't want to lay flat...even when taped. I got tired of struggling with this. Hope this helps.

Hello! Thanks for watching my videos. I have had my Arches Cold Press Bulk roll for about 1 year and 9 months. I am just now using the last of it. In my opinion, it has the same reaction to water and pigment now, as it did when I first purchased it. I have not experienced any problems with the sizing. It was left stored in the original box in a dry area. :-) Recently, I have also started using flat Imperial size sheets and I like them very much because they lie flat. Thanks!!

Sorry. I don't have this roll any longer. I used all the paper up!! So I am unable to measure it. However, if my memory is correct, the roll was about 10" in diameter. But I can't tell you for sure. Of course, it could be rolled up tighter, if necessary. However, this might increase the curvature of the paper. One of the big reasons I didn't buy another roll of this....is the curvature of the paper....which I found a little difficult to deal with. I buy my paper in Imperial sheets now -- or blocks for plein air.

Are those really Amazon prices? There may be the main problem. That exact Arches pad you show is $17.60 at my local art store today. Probably cheaper 2 years ago plus you may find discounts at times making it even cheaper. The roll is great but price difference is minimal between roll and pad at a good art store. Even the 11x16 pad is only $28.50.

I've painted on both sides....and honestly, I don't see a big difference. However, I prefer painting on the more textured side of the paper. I like texture, so I want to take advantage of that. I paint mostly on Baohong paper, which has a more pronounced texture on the "right" or "up" side. If I were you, I'd experiment. I think the most important "rules" in art, are the ones we discover for ourselves, as we gain more and more experience. Have fun!!

Thats a great idea. I found the hardest part of using bulk paper was cutting/ripping it down to size. It takes a bit of time, as you saw in the video. This paper cutter idea is great. Thanks for sharing.

If the inner side and outer side of the roll are different , do you paint on the outer side or the inner side of the roll?
The inner side of the roll is the "right" side. If you are unsure, you can also tell by looking at the texture. The "right" side of the paper has a slightly more pronounced texture. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
I bought one (but single sheets ) like 9.00 or so and was gonna cut/rip them, do I still have to stretch them before painting?
Hi! Thanks for watching. I don't ever stretch my paper because I don't paint very large. My typical format is 9" x 12" or sometimes 11" x 14". I simply tape the paper to a board and start painting. No stretching required. However, if I was going to paint in a large format (16" x 24" or larger), I might consider stretching the paper. The buckling issue seems to get worse the larger the paper. Hope this helps.
I typically paint 18x24 and while there is some warping it isn’t too bad, I just tape my edges. Alternatively I occasionally do my first big wash then wet the back once dry (that mostly flattens it) it is really personal opinion so I suggest experimenting

You do want to watch prices on these vs pads or blocks at places like Blick too. For instance, right now if you were to look at the pads of cold pressed in 10x14 you can get it for $18 which is $1.50/sheet since 12 come in a pad. A roll gets you 108 sheets of 10x14 and they are $166.18 right now which comes out to $1.54/sheet. Not a huge difference, but for the extra effort you’d like to see some savings. If flexibility with sheet sizes is important to you, though, then it is still probably worth it to get the roll.

Yes. This video was made about three years ago. In that time, the price of cotton paper has increased dramatically. It is even more expensive outside of the USA. I hope you can find a good deal where you are.

Great question. Yes. Of course you can cut it with scissors. But many watercolor artists prefer the deckled edge that is achieved when you rip the paper. I prefer the look of the ripped paper, even if it is a bit more work.
What I do is: using a metal square ruler to make an initial 'line' on the paper, ( not a cut) then I fold it backwards and forwards a few times on that line. It's then surprisingly easy to tear the paper on that fold, without even a ruler! I use loose, big sheets of Arches, though, not a roll.
You look very comfortable tearing off with the metal ruler, probably by having done it lots of times, but I would definitely move the ruler and end up with wonky pages.😏 Thanks for the the info of pros and cons.

Weird question…. But does watercolor paper “expire”? And I’m ONLY asking this bizarre question because Denise from In Liquid Color said in one of her older videos that she had some old paper and she was concerned it “wasn’t good anymore.” I was so confused and that always stuck with me. I had no idea what she meant. I left a comment asking what she meant by that and she never replied. I highly doubt 100% cotton paper can go bad so I wish I knew what she was suggesting. I have tons of old paper that’s a few years old and I really really don’t want to think it’s not good anymore
It took me 2.5 years to go through this big bulk roll of Arches, and it was fine right up to the end. Of course, I stored it in a dry place. I'm certain the environment could affect the paper if you aren't careful. But, I apply some common sense and don't seem to have any problems.
