I've always thought that for half life 3 that Freeman and Shepherd should finally come together as allies in the resistance movement against the combine. That would make for some awesome story moments. Better yet, give the game a co-op option where the second player can play as Shepherd.
Thats the problem, hype is running to absurd levels. I'd be scared of releasing half life 3 too, and the inevitable fan backlash if its anything less than absolutley perfect in every aspect.
As a hardcore fan of the series, I'd be happy if someone, anyone, closed the series. I honestly don't even care if Valve makes the game, hell, the Crowbar Collective did an excellent job on Black Mesa, I'm sure they could make a Episode 3.
