Nero's arc is going from a hot head with a dark secret (his demon arm) and no direction in life until his 2nd fight with Dante, where he chills out a bit, to the end where accepts the fact that his arm isn't a curse, but rather a weapon to save people with. It's a story of self-acceptance & being accepted by others despite flaws (Credo defending Nero from Sanctus & asking Dante to save his sister AND Nero, Dante entrusting Yamato to Nero, Kyrie loving Nero b/c of who he is at his core despite his demon blood). It's a good story, but it just kinda... stops once you get to the Dante segment for a bit until the end. It needed more room to breathe. DMCV did a much better job with Nero.
LMAO this is why fanboys are FKng cringe. There's nothing good about DMC4's absolutely r3+@rd3d plot. This franchise hasn't had anything close to good writing since DMC3. Even the bland DmC has a more coherent story. Only thing DMC4's plot has going, is it's better than the absolute dogshit that is DMC5's plot.
@@Z_Acceriz good for you but man was dmc4 a torture for me too play thought just the enemys are so bad and most bosses are either boring or just easy dante is underpowered unless you play him a specific way unless you know inertia and other stuff(that is when the game gets trully good honestly)
@@morkgin2459 yeah nero levels are fun but dantes is literally just the worst not because off backtracking its just dante is just not designed for the enemys
I mean, the game just wasn't designed to handle a ranged-focused character, and it shows. If Lady were playable from the start, the enemy AI would no doubt be designed to handle it to an extent.
@@freedantheeternal it's not the AI's problem here. It's more of how... Poor she feels in. DMC game because everyone else can do very cool, flashy combos that can go on and on, while Lady is literally just "haha, guns doing brrrrrr" with her best combo options being grapple bayonet and AoE skull crusher.
@@GerMorden Except that is the primary problem. Lady has far more moves than that, but the AI is completely unable to pressure her because it's made for Dante and Nero, both of whom are primarily melee combatants and relatively weak at range, and yes, even including Dante in Gunslinger in that statement. And your pattern isn't even needed. Lady can kill enemies from clear across a given arena quickly and efficiently and still come out of it with a high combo score because of the way she's designed.
While I think that 4 is definitely unfinished and not perfect, the fact that Dante just redoes Nero's campaign is basically reused hell, and the fact that there's barely any bosses at all stinks, but at least it gives us a quick and fun combat, great taunts, a good new character in Nero, and fun bonus stuff(which still sucks that 4SE on new gens is digital only)
@@Dangangela6565 I can try and explain but play it. The second half of the game with Dante is a backtrack through Neros levels, atleast most of them. Look at Dante's weapons, notice how in DMC3 and DMC5 the Itsuno directed games, they all come from the bosses he kills. Yet Gilgamesh, Lucifer, and Pandora are nowhere to be seen as bosses or even enemies. DMC4 artbook also has several moments where they blatantly show you cut content, including Nero's devil trigger, Sin DT for Dante which both made it in 5, an entire cut section for Nero with levels inside the Savior statue. Trust me when you beat it the game will still feel like a solid 7/10, but it could've been a 9/10 or 10/10 with a 2009 release date.
I like how neros DT is similar to that of Virgil but like very aggressive, he basically gets his doppelganger, his summoned swords and even the blue flame aspect. But obviously he's WAY more aggressive then Virgil is, who is literally more calculating and contraindicated. Hell Nero even gets a grab for every enemy in the game with variations with DT, simply playing him sounds like a serotonin filled experience I think.
DMC3 was so tough for me as a kid that with every new entry in the franchise it retroactively makes me better at it lol 4 was very much one of those games
Regarding your comment on Vergils "concentration (motivation) meter" honestly it reads less like a gimmick to me and more as a way to incentivize people to play more in line with Vergils character, while there's really nothing stopping you from mashing buttons and going full on monkey brain neuron activation mode on the controller you're really locking yourself out of Vergils true potential and fun by doing so, this isn't wacky woohoo pizzaman time, this is virgin time, and conducting yourself accordingly by fighting as a measured response to enemies, not getting hit (cause damage is lame and Vergil ain't lame) and keeping yourself superior in the face of your enemies will lead you to CRUSH with him, there's always a debate to be had between games but their continued expansion on Vergils moveset in 4 and 5 in the face of 3 has made for fantastic growth and development imo.
I think DMC4 Vergil's biggest issues were that the style meter wasn't properly balanced for the amount of damage he does, and it was too easy to built concentration by just standing still. Both problems were fixed in DMC5, and he feels way more satisfying to play now.
@@phootaphan9166 The problem of Vergil is the insane amount of damage his attacks do. I can't barely end a combo because he destroys the enemies in no time when he's at full concentratio bar.
@@phootaphan9166 I mean to be fair, in 5 you can just hit like 4 sequential judgement cuts and go from 0 concentration to max. The issue stayed but was just moved. But I agree that DMC4 it was a little too easy to gain concetration
@@phootaphan9166I feel like dmc5 has the same "issue." Never had a hard time getting SSS with vergil but it's A LOT harder doing it with dante and Nero imo.
Neros DT animations on some of the big bosses where just..... entertainingly brutal. and his voice actor has a great roar/scream. afterall, its ichigo.
Small adition to Vergil's motivation meter: It does more than giving damage to JC depending on the weapon. On Yamato increases the range of the attacks, almost double at full gauge, and Judgement cut gets more damage and size. On Beowulf it gives a 4th possible level of charge for all of the charged attacks On Force Edge all attacks get multi-hit properties and Round Trip gets bigger size
Also if anyone is the strongest characters in the game it's lady. Girl can speed run bloody palace by turning the camera and charging rockets = instawin. Literally the most broken overpowered gameplay design in the entire series.
I found really interesting how Dante wanted to trick and play with his enemies so in the end they gonna be humiliated. On the other hand Nero wants to beat all crap out of his enemies so in the enemies gonna feel like s total shit
29:15 Uh no, that's not at all what it only does -Increases judgement cut size and damage -Enables access to JCE -Increases the range of all Yamato attacks -Increases the amount of hits each Force Edge attack does -Adds a 3rd level charge to all of his beowulf attacks Concentration factors into all of these Edit: Also, concentration AND DT are both increased when Vergil sheathes his weapon after a combo move and with taunts, and decreases if you run around, miss attacks, or get hit. You essentially have to actually be Vergil to get concentration up, that's the entire point of the mechanic. It's not this weird "tacked on" aspect to the character, everything he does factors into this. How you move, how you attack and defend, and how you act. And to your point at 29:49, again, that's the entire point. His entire character is a power fantasy, and his playstyle is high risk high reward. His only defensive move is his trick mechanic, and the basic defensive options. Dante has trickster, double jumps, royal guard, and the basic dodge mechanics. Vergil has trick to target, trick away in DT, and side rolling. His defense, honestly, sucks, but is balanced by his INTENSIVE offense. You get hit and your concentration goes down, you can't just spam JCE and win the game. You want DT? You gotta let Vergils animations play out, let his taunts play out, don't miss any attacks, etc.
I fucking love dmc4. Also a cool thing I noticed today is that at the end of the Dante fight Nero lunges with Yamato and gets clowned on by Dante, but learns from his mistake and tosses it to Sanctus to defeat him
I will always love DMC4. Still a ton of fun to play. Special Edition has a bunch more characters to play as. I like how colorful it is compared to 5. I wish 5 was as colorful as 4 is. It would look incredible.
@@TheFallen_29 It was fine. Each area had its own color theme. The castle was very blue, the jungle was very green, etc etc. What did they expect was gonna happen when the game wasn't entirely set in a castle and the characters went outside?
@@TheFallen_29 considering it's Urban Fantasy the color scheme fit's, it's DMC5 that's the problem everybody but Dante is wearing black or white to add to that the crumy Reboot Aesthetic manage to make it's way here which naturally without Limbo there isn't any color in DMC5
I thought you were gonna talk about how Pandora's opening move instantly disperses the Blitz shield and stuns them. Makes quick work of them since you can you Real Impact plus you don't even need Disaster to do it.
My first tango with Devil May Cry series was actually through DMC 4, so it holds a special place in my heart. I think it was in like 2010, I was a 16 year old lad and knew nothing of Dante. Needless to say the opening sequence gave me quite some chills and left an impression on me. Then I played the game fully, beaten it multiple times, got around the other titles and fell in love with the guy. I guess first impressions can be overcome sometimes.
I learned that the best way to deal with learning dantes skill curve is to use vergil first because his weapon switching combos are easier and then get to dante later
Oh my god dude I absolutely agree with your point about the enemies. I enjoy fighting them WAY MORE than the enemies in DMC3. While yes, fighting them as Nero is easier due to his grab, Dante can deal with them just fine as well, albeit you do have to work more to do so. It makes sense that people would get used to being able to grab enemies for high damage or easier combos, which is sort of another reason for why Dante should've had his own story/campaign.
The concentration does more then just make his judgement cuts stronger, it changes the properties of his weapons and gives him an afterimage when he attacks making them more deadly.
DMC4 (and to a lesser extent 5) suffers from a lot of the context being put in prequel manga. In this case, it's especially Nero's character arc and his relationship with Credo and Kyrie. I'm sure the game would have showed it more if they had more dev time, but the multimedia storytelling also carried over to 5, so I think some of this story splitting was done on purpose. DMC as a series has some of the best character writing I've ever seen, but I can only give it that label after reading all the manga because the games aren't enough.
I feel the same and it pisses me off because the script and writing of 3 was pretty well done. The only reason I can find is Capcom thinking that DMC main audience only cared about the combat and gamepley and didn't wanted to bore the public.
As someone who went through the whole DMC series (except for 2 for obvious reasons) chronologically for the first time over the past few months, it might be weird but DMC4 might be my favorite one because playing as Nero finally made me kinda get the DMC combat for the first time. Being able to pull enemies towards Nero or Nero towards enemies is such a welcome mechanic for someone who isn't that great at DMC in general cause it makes basic combos so much easier. The devil bringer grapples are also just really satisfying and made me wanna see all the possible animations the game had to offer. While I like the devil breaker in DMC5 quite a bit too, nothing gets close to the powertrip that is grappling in DMC4.
Are you me? This was also my first DMC game and I too replayed it to death despite the others being superior in many cases. Summed my feelings on it up perfectly!
The moment you mentioned that the story was meant to cadder to new players and add on for fans, I immediately saw that in Dante and Nero. Nero is new to the series while Dante has already been introduced and well established. I think it's something that stood out to me after you mentioned it and thought I should share. It could just be me making conclusions based on a vague connection.
If DMC4 had a bit more time to flesh out via development, it would've been pushed from early 2008 to mid 2009. Just imagine if Dante gets more cool Devil Arms, new demonic bosses(especially the scrapped ones before DMC5 did the same), Nero to have new defensive and offensive elemental abilities after defeating bosses which will change his demon arm/DT to different colors depending on the ability equipped a la DMC1 and DMC3(like orange with Berial, dark blue with Bael, green with Echidna, etc), the game to have more hilarious and cheesy moments, and the story to feel satisfying. It would give the developers and cast/stuntmen/mocap actors an extended amount of creative liberties and comedic freedom like during DMC4's troubled development but taken to an 11. I doubt that'll be the case because this was back when Capcom was attempting to pander towards the western youth compared to their games having a favorable eastern flair to it all.
Time wasn't the main issue. 4 had the longest dev time of any DMC game at that point. The big issue was the budget, which was about the same as DMC3's, despite being an HD game and being on two consoles (one of which wasn't planned initially). If it was truly rushed, then the little content there was probably wouldn't have been as polished as it was (and it's incredibly polished. You don't make one of the greatest combat ever if you're on a tight schedule). If it wasn't rushed (assuming that it was) they still wouldn't have had the budget to add more unique levels, more weapons and bosses.
Capcom fcked one of their core franchises over, what a surprise🤯 Then they proceeded to compare their sales to cod, were disappointed and made a reboot that everyone hated lmao.
This is game is such fun to play through with Nero. Unfortunately Dante's weapons aren't that much fun and his part sucks so that's sad, it's definitely not Itsuno's fault though. The 3 extra playable characters on the Ps4 version were extremely fun to play as though.
I whole disagree. Once you get Dante's full weapon load-out he's incredibly fun to play, so much so that I disliked going back to Nero's basic equipment. Pandora is especially fantastic imo. The only one I don't really vibe with is Lucifer (I think that's its name anyway, it's the dart weapon).
@@StormSnakeMG Pretty much agree with this entirely. Maybe I vibe with Lucifer slightly better, but only in terms of stringing it into combos for style rating; it’s almost never the tool I lead with. Pandora is stupid good, though, no denying that.
@@StormSnakeMG If i might ask as someone who's never played a Devil May Cry game but has an interest in combat design in games, what makes Pandora so great?
@@jurtheorc8117 It's basically the jack of all trades , it can be a range attack or throwable weapon and is a great way of getting air combs with the right input, however I prefer Lucifer for the knock back and the style meter.
Why does every reviewer on YT thinks that "analysis" means just listing shit off a wiki page? It's not interesting and it doesn't add anything of value to the discussion. "Nero has X, Y and Z moves and they do this. They are cool. Dante has A, B and C moves. They are strong". Either explain your points better or don't even bother.
The newest dmc did everything I wanted for Nero, more arm modes. Felt dmc4 just missed out doing fun things with his arm rather than just giving him shield or gun.
@@RemixerUltimate basically he just get back to DMC4 but more moves, and that is it. DMC4 Nero got mote Dynamic with his Devil Bringer, every single gran animation is different, unlike DMC5 version
Concentration Meter for Vergil increases the range and power of all his attacks, not just JC. Meter decreases not only from taking damage, but also running and jumping, also increases by just standing near enemies without taking damage, by sheathing the Yamato and doing taunts. For me, it's a pretty limiting mechanic, hindering comebacks and style when you get damaged, Super Vergil is a lot more fun for a casual play since he's always "motivated". I'm ok with taking damage, trading hits (it feels natural and even hype, esp vs bosses), I love to try new stuff, play more casually instead of tryhard, and having low concentration because of this feels limiting. Other chars don't have such limits. On the other hand, if you're already no-hit combo mad master, it won't matter much to you do you have concentration low or high. Also the way his teleports are changed from 3 are bad (though it destroys bosses lol), and while you have amazing DT teleports instead of rolls, it's limited to DT. Also he lost some of his great moveset like Force Edge combo A or Rising Sun. Also for some reason sheathing the Yamato gives style no more. Still, a very fun addition to the game.
I've seen a lot of guys recording their super-cool combos based on inertia (enemies being blown away by certain attack). That mechanical alone gives combat a lot of depth, and other games simply don't have it. And it looks so cool, when someone knows how to used! look I up)) But I personally come back to dmc4 for the artstyle and music. Also the story really touched me when I was a kid)
This is the first game I ever played from the series and I loved it. I don't want to compare it to it’s prequels; it’s a masterpiece on it’s own rights since it doesn’t rely on the stories from the past. Besides story.. enemies, bosses and level design are astonishing! Especially the soundtracks and music.. some of them are otherworldly. I'm so glad that I got to play this game in my life.
People don't give the story of DMC4 enough credit. Yes, it's not as good as DMC3, but it's not a farce like a lot of people act like it is. And this video doesn't give the writing credit with Nero. He's got a full arc, and quite a bit of internal conflict. He thinks he's a freak because of his arm, and he knows that he'll be ostracized if people know about it (since it's obviously demonic in nature). Makes his self-actualization directly tied to The Order being revealed to be demons, themselves, and Nero learning to navigate his way through lies in order to learn, essentially, what it means to be human. Ironic, considering that he's the grandson of Sparda and son of Vergil, which is also something that Dante alludes to without it being too obvious. After all, the Yamato's "gotta stay in the family," and then he let's Nero keep it after his test of pretending to forget to collect it to see if Nero was willing to part with it. It's a great mentor-student dynamic they have going on, which is even reflected in Nero's outfit with the color design. Nero is a great protagonist. Like everything else, though, he would've been better if given more time. I am so happy that DMC5 exists to show the quality that DMC4 lacked due to Capcom's stupidity with the time cuts.
But on the other hand imo I feel like that’s all there is to the story. Nero’s development and foreshadowed connection to the family but not much else. Kyrie for example who is the main driving force for Nero has literally no development or involvement in the entire story except for being the damsel and it’s kinda sad. Then the oxymoron and walking pile of irony that is the Order just makes no sense..they worship the demonic power of Sparda in a holy light just to turn themselves into demons and open the hell gates so that they can fight those demons…with their demons..? To mimic the actions of Sparda I’m guessing for literally no reason at all. Like DMC2 had a story that made more sense then DMC4
@@GamerFreak354 The script in 4 was a complete mess as well as the character development. And let's not talk about how it threw away all the character development Dante had in 3 and 1.
At 10:15 you mention that DMC4 has nothing going for it except for some fun character interactions and I agree mostly but Dantes interaction with Credo when he makes his dying request hit me different.
DMC5 almost leaves this one obsolete but I just wish that 5 had Lady and Trish playable. They were present in the game already, why didn't they make them playable again? If you could give DMC4SE any merit, it's for the fact that it has the most playable characters.
I actually like Lady's Combat style, keeping your distance mostly and using badass guns relying on range combat feels quite unique unlike everyone else who likes going close up
Actually, DMC4 was the first game in the series I played (because I only had a PC and a gamecube so I didn't experience the previous games) and to a newcomer it was exactly as you described: Nero felt fun and easy to get comfortable with, but Dante was so intimidating I didn't do a lot of weapon- or style-switching in combat. But for what it's worth, it really got me interested in the rest of the series, so I guess from that viewpoint it was successful in its attempt to bring new folks in. And I don't know if its just my nostalgia speaking, but I've always remembered this game fondly, in particular the bosses; Belial was a fun romp (and the lucifer demonstration is just so perfectly cheesy, I love it), I really liked the anglerfish inspired frogs, and squashing the science nerd like a literal bug was really cathartic.
Despite being a semi-latecomer to entirety of the series (I played DMC1 at launch, DmC DINO at launch, and nothing else until DMC5), I ultimately played all the games in backward order after 5 and REALLY enjoyed DMC4. I didn't know about the drama, the public reception, the troubled development. I just found a game that felt great to play, even though DMC5 was technically superior in every way. I also played DMC3 after 4. I'm actually playing it right now; I accidentally saved over my Dante save with my Vergil save, so I'm replaying it as Dante, something I was oddly excited to do. This game holds up incredibly well, despite all the time. But switching back and forth between 3 and 4, I can really appreciate how much 4 added to the series, starting with the camera (3's SM12 with Vergil nearly broke me), and culminating in LDK, which is the best kind of chaos. Proud Souls were... Meh. I could understand why they were there; they wanted a way for skill points to transfer between multiple characters without affecting Blorbs and Porbs. But in a game that forces you to collect Red Orbs to maximize mission ranking (and was MUCH more strict about it than 3), making those orbs completely useless by basically mid-game was a terrible idea. But overall, I think I'm one of those rare fools who came to DMC4 very late and still appreciate it deeply amidst its esteemed kin.
DMC4 was my introduction to the series and I was a maaaad scrub, spamming Busters and stingers as my go-to. It took my 3rd and 4th playthrough to actually be damn good at the game, where I feel encouraged to literally try everything, instead of my scummy, cheap-ass tactics. I could ease out of Nero and start picking up Dante way more often, and nowadays, after having the game for several years, I love playing as him. I know most folks that had my experience didn't come out like that, and how it was the die-hards that really stuck with this game, but im definitely with you with them needing more bosses for Dante, and then a few new bosses for Vergil, Trish and Lady. I'm sure everyone would appreciate that
The Bloody Palace having a time limit never sat right with me. I was really happy when DmC: Definitive Edition gave the option to disable it, but DMC5 doesn't. :/
As someone who just finished DMC 4 a couple days ago, I can safely say both Blitz and the Savior/Sanctus are officially my new hated enemies to fight. Faust would be up there, but at least he's got a cool hat.
I didn't like DMC4 at all when it came out. I never even bothered to go past level 20 in BP. I did like Nero's Red Queen. And I see DMC4 having the BEST visual and SFX on all the attacks. Million Stab, Gilgamesh's moves, etc. I can just listen to the amazing audio all day. And the red oni touch on Dante's attack and the blue for Vergil. However, as a game, I am not a fan of DMC4. And it really shows with DMC4 SE. DMC4 SE is a game with GREAT and fun characters. And it's their gameplay that saves DMC4. I don't have ay stages I really like playing. No bosses I really care to fight. But cutting lose with the characters is fun. And it is challenging to get down enemy step loops, Distortions are amazing. I just wish there was a better setting for the characters to cut loose in. Sometimes, I still boot it up just to enjoy the visuals and attacks.
DMC 4 was one of the first steam games I got when I finally got my PC way back then. It was a shit PC and I only had a keyboard but seeing DMC 4 run at 60fps and playing with nero's aggressive fightstyle was enough to keep me entertained for hours. Honestly it gets me nostalgic...
DMC4 had probably the best trailer in the series. I want to say it was the 2nd trailer. This was when you could download videos directly on the PS3 and it was one that stayed on my console until it finally died in 2013.
I remember getting the pc version on release and the sharpness and quality of the graphics blew me away at 60fps. I can't remember much else about it though.
So I’ll just give abit of advice for Nero’s Exceed Revs that can be used here and 5. Imagine a opponent is in front of you and when Red Queen would connect to the opponents body thats where the Max Act is. You will be able to consistently get a charge regardless of if you get a Max Act or not as long as you have that visual idea in mind then build the muscle memory from there.
Good video, I’ve owned DMC 4 special edition for some time now through a bundle I got years ago. I’ve played a fair bit of DMC 5 and although I lost my save about a third of DMC 1. DMC 4 always struck me as “the odd one out” since it’s not even talked about as being bad like 2 is or weird like DMC: Devil May Cry is. Eventually I’ll circle back through to 4, it’ll be nice to see what Nero was.
I feel so old seeing so many ppl in the comments saying this was their first DMC game 😅 I JUST beat it b/c I decided to get all of the DMC games and outside content and go thru everything in chronological order. DMC1 was one of my first 4 PS2 games when I was 11 and I loved it so much, I even love 2 despite all the hate it gets (I love the dedicated dodge button, I'm so bad at using a button that can me jump OR dodge so I get hit a lot on accident). I think the weakest aspect is Kyrie b/c she's a legit damsel in distress in a way we've never seen before in the series. Trish gets captured by Mundus, sure BUT she overpowers his chains and saves Dante. Dante saves Lady from herself but she's legit a badass in DMC3, even walking off having her Nikita's bayonet pushed thru her leg. I just don't get the point of using a woman as character motivation to THIS extent so late in the life of a series? Felt like the writers watched Bleach and was like "This is it, this is our story, get Ichigo's voice actor on the phone!" But other than that the mechanics are really hard for me to grasp (probably will go back to DMC3 to get better, I forced myself to play Normal the whole way thru when I started this playthru) but I love what they did w/ Dante, just need to practice when I'm not so absorbed w/ lore lol
Concentration benefits: more attack range with yamato bladed attacks, more force edge attacks, and more charges with beowulf, it's not a gimmick. Force edge also fills it faster on attacks, and dodging can increase the meter faster.
Ended up changing the thumbnail for this video because of the very strong backlash. I'll be sure to keep the feedback in mind for future videos and not lean as hard into provocative thumbnails.
Same with Devil May Cry 1 , you had 15 or so boss fights but only 5 different bosses lol spider x 3 bird x 3 dark knight x 3 that moldy mud monster x 3 Mundus x 3 I dont count those phantom dogs/wolfs/tigers (whatever they are)as a boss.
I actually preferred to play as Nero over Dante back when I was still new to the DMC franchise, DMC4 was my first DMC game. Eventually I just got gud as Dante, especially after having played through the HD collection. I believe this game is better than DMC1 and 2, but it is the most bland to replay for me because of the amount of playthroughs I have finished compared to the other games.
Nero is undoubtedly better to play as in this game because they designed the game around what he could do. It's why certain enemies just don't react the same way with Dante. Frost for instance, prefer to keep their distance and with Nero, the design structure around that was his snatch which instantly cancels their attacks. With Dante, they'll just keep going unless it's something REALLY heavy like st stinger. Even gilgamesh punch don't do enough hitstun most of the time as you need 2-3 hits in before that.
@@bruhder5854 Frost are a pain in the asse to battle with Dante when they come in groups. They just spam theire projectile attacks and their Cocytus attack (ice variant of Ifrit's Inferno) at close range.
Oh man, in first half of your conclusion you basically summed up my experience with the series. Started with 4, got encouraged to try other entries due to this game in the end becoming a giant fan of the series due to 4, also the bit about friends getting annoyed at you not shutting up about dmc4. Heavy mood here! My buddy made a bet with me to stop talking about the game, I lost almost by instant.
I mean, even if is true than DMC3 is still talked to this days, I love 4, Nero is so freaking cool, I love the playstyle with his Devil Arm, his relationship with Credo and Kyrie, and how the fate of one of them influenced his future (as seen in DMC V), and well, it was my first DMC and I loved it. Hoping I can play the Special Edition, and then V.
this is entirely meaningless, but i love how EVERYONE has agreed that dante did not simply 'kill' sanctus, he straight up assassinated him like it was a hit
Tbh this might be a rather rough opinion on my part, but I honestly hated Dantes moveset on 4. It was cool that they added style switch, but Dantes trickster was basically neutered because of that and the only way to get that same amount of Trickster movement like in 3 you had to master guard canceling which was a pain the ass.
dante's trickster dashing multiple times is done by switching to royal guard to cancel the cooldown and then switching to trickster to dash again, this tech is called wavedashing and its pretty satisfying
@@NotEnder Not satisfying enough if this was removed in DMC 5 and trickster was just uncapped like it shoulda been. I'm not saying wave dashing isn't bad. It was just too strenuous compared to dmc 5 where u didn't need to constantly switch to royal guard and trickster was naturally uncapped.
@@Did_No_Wrong I mean that is fair though trickster also just breaks the game and removes the challenge, you can go through the whole game using trickster to dodge attacks in 5 instead of doing more interesting interactions while in 4 its something that you need to actually learn to do instead of just being handed to you, then again 5 was also somewhat changed for newcomers by simplifying or removing a lot of the interesting stuff from 4 which is both ti its advantages and detriment, trickster is more of in the middle as its a useful tool but also easily abusable.
Nero's character development was phenomenal, his Jackass behavior was toned down and he becomes more levelheaded, and he believes in the idea of strength like his father, but for a different cause, to Protect his Family, both Biological and Adoptive. "I couldn't protect Credo, to this day I blame myself for not having enough strength, but this time is different. I swear, IM NOT LETTING YOU DIE"
Man, I wish we could have a 'perfect' dmc game, something like a combination of DMC: dmc levels, DMC3 story, DMC4 character variety (as long as it doesn't hurt the quality) and DMC5 gameplay.
This was my favorite game of the series. It had more and better combos, the proud souls system where you can refund skills and not have to grind when you pick up a new character, and buster, which changed the combat severely.
I feel the same way you feel about pandora, but I also feel it for lucifer as well. Proud souls do suck, but you can unbuy them if you want to restrict your gameplay as well, or respeck of sorts to something else, giving you a chance to experiment with move sets.
DMC 4 had it's whole second half with Dante cut because of both time and budget limitations. Apparently Dante's Majin DT from 2 was supposed to make a comeback and in the story it made him more insane and demonic each time he used it. I kinda forgot but Dante becomes the bad guy for a bit and Nero has to actually go into Hell and rescue his uncle from himself. The emotional payoff would've been tremendous and a reverse from 3 where Dante bests Vergil but in 4 Nero will best Dante. It would've also had more weapons and stuff for both Nero and Dante and new levels for both. The only reason 4 is a little lacking is because it's not what they had in mind for the whole game. The budget ballooned and was already over their limit when they released DMC 4 as it was. I still think of what could've been and it would've no doubt eclipsed 3 in every way if they had all the money and time to make their true vision. Literally story, characters, music, graphics, and gameplay would've been like nothing else at the time.
In my head canon the 3 protags practiced these 3 styles of Historical Fencing. Dante = Liechtenauer/German Fencing, created by Johannes Liechtenauer this style focuses on Aggression, Momentum and footwork, often this style uses Attacks as offensive and defensive strikes using this to instantly counterattack the enemy, it also looks flashy with most moves being cuts and slashes. Interesting Note: this style was supposedly originally suppose to be a secret so instead of using a traditional Note or Manual for memorization Liechtenauer instead gave his student (or at least people who claim to be) a Poem called the Zettel (the Recital) containing many of his teachings and philosophies. (So theoretically Dante can create a Rock song in his head based on the Zettel, kind of puts an interesting spin on the Nevan scene from DMC3) Vergil = Yagyu Shinkagen Ryu, a more cautious, quick and footwork focused variant of Kenjutsu, unlike most Kenjutsu styles often compared to Liechtenauer on their aggression, this style also focuses on adaptation. Interesting note: this style of Kenjutsu was founded by Kamiizumi Nobutsuna a Buddist Monk (so ironically the Power Hungry and Social Darwinist Vergil practices the style of a more pacifistic person and also ironically promotes personal growth and change.) Nero = Polish Style Saber Fencing, an Aggressive, Fast and frenetic form of Saber fencing, the Polish style relys on a whole lot of footwork and leans, the style was used by the famous Winged Hussars and nicknamed "the Hellish Cut" by a German Master. Interesting note: the style is mostly lost, very little about it survived the turbulent history of Poland, so people who practice it today reconstruct it based on whats left and other styles like German, Turkic, Turkish and Hungarian, its also noted as seemingly not protecting the hands much. (Its kind of odd with how many coincidences this one snaged with Nero, the Winged Hussars, the Hands bit, the leaning but if true than Nero is the most dedicated one out of the 3 as he studied an almost lost art and mastered it though to be fair to the 2 especially Dante's, ironically as Liechtenauer is mostly learned through his student's manuals especially Mayer so only being relevant only for the 200 years of its existence until today while Yagyu Shinkagen Ryu has mostly remained relevant up to today, those are very difficult to research and learn too)
My biggest complaint of DMC4 was the story, the backtracking and Nero. I rushed through Nero's parts as fast as I could cause I couldn't stand playing him. He felt clunky to me. Dante made the game a bit more enjoyable but then comes that whole backtracking thing. And by the end of the game we learn pretty much nothing about Nero. Oh he randomly got the devil trigger arm one day. Why? how? What caused that? was it cause the Yamato was found and brought to the city? When was that? How did the Order come across the Yamato if it was in the demon world since Vergil used it to fight Mundus(And failed to defeat him)? Who was Nero's mother? How and when did she die? What made her so important to Vergil? And then he just sort of brushes off the whole "Hey you have a son" thing in DMC5 like "Meh don't give a damn and not important" DMC4 as a whole basically didn't need Nero to exist if the plot revolves around The Order having the Yamato and Dante trying to get it back.
If there is one thing i would probably change is that not make Nero the son of Vergil/blood related to Sparda. I mean don't get me wrong i don't have nothing against Nero being a demon but i just feel that maybe it would've been great where instead of Nero being blood related to Sparda he could've been blood related to another demon like maybe his mother was a demon queen or something and his father a human and where his demon powers would be different then Sparda's and wielding one of their parent's weapon. Maybe Nero's story could also be about him finding more clues about his parents that isn't Sparta related or something. Just a thought and opinion that's all.
As they say, “The flinch in your eye calls your bluff, Feel free to die when you've had enough, Useless cause is breaking your back, Your life will end, when you attack, Make your move, Make your stand, Make the win, (ha..) What I thought after play all 5 games is that none of the 4 first matter at all. The fifth was so much better it’s the only one I’ll ever actually want to play again.
Just imagine if DMC4 wasn't rushed...

We’d have a Dante game, a Nero game and a Vergil game and they’d all be fighting over being the best in the franchise.

I oddly like Lady's insane damage cause you can basically skip fighting all the same bosses for the third time
It gets even funnier on Sparda difficulty, when there's more enemies. Landing a level 3 Kalina Ann missile into like 50 demons feels just good
I mean, the game just wasn't designed to handle a ranged-focused character, and it shows.
I like lady because Shpere Hunter liked to dress like her.
When your main complaint about Dante is "He has too much cool stuff he can do, it may be overwhelming to decide"
While I think that 4 is definitely unfinished and not perfect, the fact that Dante just redoes Nero's campaign is basically reused hell, and the fact that there's barely any bosses at all stinks, but at least it gives us a quick and fun combat, great taunts, a good new character in Nero, and fun bonus stuff(which still sucks that 4SE on new gens is digital only)
@@Dangangela6565 The...entire video explains it.

Virgin time lmao
@@phootaphan9166I feel like dmc5 has the same "issue." Never had a hard time getting SSS with vergil but it's A LOT harder doing it with dante and Nero imo.
nero is the character that made me fell in love with the DMC series, and i loved the story !!
On Beowulf it gives a 4th possible level of charge for all of the charged attacks
On Force Edge all attacks get multi-hit properties and Round Trip gets bigger size
Also if anyone is the strongest characters in the game it's lady. Girl can speed run bloody palace by turning the camera and charging rockets = instawin. Literally the most broken overpowered gameplay design in the entire series.
DMC 4 was my start to the DMC series and I loved it and after revisiting it this spring I loved it still
same
Same, played it on the 360 back in the day.
Same I was young
just played it again and still loved the game and nero. I wonder what it could have been if it was completely finish game.
same
I found really interesting how Dante wanted to trick and play with his enemies so in the end they gonna be humiliated.
On the other hand Nero wants to beat all crap out of his enemies so in the enemies gonna feel like s total shit
*like a total deadweight
29:15 Uh no, that's not at all what it only does
-Increases judgement cut size and damage
-Enables access to JCE
-Increases the range of all Yamato attacks
-Increases the amount of hits each Force Edge attack does
-Adds a 3rd level charge to all of his beowulf attacks
Concentration factors into all of these
Edit: Also, concentration AND DT are both increased when Vergil sheathes his weapon after a combo move and with taunts, and decreases if you run around, miss attacks, or get hit.
Also a cool thing I noticed today is that at the end of the Dante fight Nero lunges with Yamato and gets clowned on by Dante, but learns from his mistake and tosses it to Sanctus to defeat him
That lunge is also the same move that Vergil did Dmc3 (at the end of the first fight between Dante and Vergil).
I will always love DMC4. Still a ton of fun to play. Special Edition has a bunch more characters to play as. I like how colorful it is compared to 5. I wish 5 was as colorful as 4 is. It would look incredible.

WHAT THE HELL is this good thumpnail moment
Hey, great review man and I agree that DMC4 was completely supplanted gameplay wise by 5 but that only serves to exemplify how good 5 really is.
This game had great memes. Like the lucifer scene and WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!
I'm surprised that you did not mention inertia in this game consider it is one the biggest way how air combos are done in the game.
Nero's conflict and theme is self acceptance, he is not bland at all
I feel like DMC4 Bloody Palace saw Mercenaries in RE4 and was like: "hey let's copy that"
If DMC4 had a bit more time to flesh out via development, it would've been pushed from early 2008 to mid 2009.
Mid 2009 is like the perfect release for DMC4
Bayo would have been delayed too lol
Time wasn't the main issue. 4 had the longest dev time of any DMC game at that point. The big issue was the budget, which was about the same as DMC3's, despite being an HD game and being on two consoles (one of which wasn't planned initially).
If it was truly rushed, then the little content there was probably wouldn't have been as polished as it was (and it's incredibly polished. You don't make one of the greatest combat ever if you're on a tight schedule). If it wasn't rushed (assuming that it was) they still wouldn't have had the budget to add more unique levels, more weapons and bosses.
@@Potidaon Thanks for telling me. Budget matters for any game. And DMC4 should've also boosted the budget also.
Capcom fcked one of their core franchises over, what a surprise🤯
Then they proceeded to compare their sales to cod, were disappointed and made a reboot that everyone hated lmao.

And it looks so cool, when someone knows how to used! look I up))
But I personally come back to dmc4 for the artstyle and music. Also the story really touched me when I was a kid)
This is in my top 3 games where i fight the same bosses thrice.
I mean dmc story always seemed kinda meh to me. The combat is what keeps me playing.
@@GamerFreak354 The script in 4 was a complete mess as well as the character development. And let's not talk about how it threw away all the character development Dante had in 3 and 1.

DMC5 almost leaves this one obsolete but I just wish that 5 had Lady and Trish playable. They were present in the game already, why didn't they make them playable again? If you could give DMC4SE any merit, it's for the fact that it has the most playable characters.
I actually like Lady's Combat style, keeping your distance mostly and using badass guns relying on range combat feels quite unique unlike everyone else who likes going close up
One word that makes this game the brain (not the heart) of DMC : inertia. Inertia controls everything if execution is there
"why i must buy enemy step?" trust me brother, u will need that
DMC4 was my favorite in the series before 5 released.
And Special Edition gave me Trish & Lady as playable characters and they are so fun to play.
As a game, it is quite good. However, I do agree that the story feels empty, it feels like water (present, but it feels very empty).
Oh I just noticed that Dante is watching Nero defeat those demons in the game's intro 6:31 :o
Same for me
Despite being a semi-latecomer to entirety of the series (I played DMC1 at launch, DmC DINO at launch, and nothing else until DMC5), I ultimately played all the games in backward order after 5 and REALLY enjoyed DMC4.
The true unfinished game is dmc2, it just FEELS unfinished
no not really, DMC2 is more finished than 4.
I felt like DMC4 was mainly made for nero and dante was just a after thought.
Nero game I likes!!!
I played dmc4 refrain it was pretty fun no lie Makes me wish they didn’t cut out parts in that version
Felt like the writers watched Bleach and was like "This is it, this is our story, get Ichigo's voice actor on the phone!"
But other than that the mechanics are really hard for me to grasp (probably will go back to DMC3 to get better, I forced myself to play Normal the whole way thru when I started this playthru) but I love what they did w/ Dante, just need to practice when I'm not so absorbed w/ lore lol
7:14 well, he’s literally Ichigo 🤣
"Dante's older brother vergil" excuse me? They're twins.
And then DMC5 Vergil mode came out and everyone forgot about this game
Devil May Cry 4 was my first game , its mainly the reason it got my interest in playing the other games ❤️🤟
No
This video was 6 days ago but your comment was from 9 days ago wth is going on
Same with Devil May Cry 1 , you had 15 or so boss fights but only 5 different bosses lol
spider x 3
bird x 3
dark knight x 3
that moldy mud monster x 3
Mundus x 3 I dont count those phantom dogs/wolfs/tigers (whatever they are)as a boss.
I love how in dmc4 where dante is a mix between dmc2 and dmc3 personality
34:43 I mean Bayonetta did a good job there.
Dmc4 is the only game of the series that gave me chills and the feeling of rushing to the credit scenes because of the creepy music lol
21:34 You just described Dante in a nutshell, my guy...
It was cool that they added style switch, but Dantes trickster was basically neutered because of that and the only way to get that same amount of Trickster movement like in 3 you had to master guard canceling which was a pain the ass.
you should check some dmc 4 dante combo mad
dante's trickster dashing multiple times is done by switching to royal guard to cancel the cooldown and then switching to trickster to dash again, this tech is called wavedashing and its pretty satisfying
Dmc4 was the first dmc game I had and personally I understand it's downsides but I still love it!!
I dont know what people think about this, but after seeing Donguri's videos i thought that it was the best action game ever made.
ım still sad that nevan is completely gpne it was my fav i even considered buying a purple flying v just to have my own nevan.
This game could've easily been the best DMC game, maybe action game in general, if it wasn't rushed so badly
You forgot Dreadnaught.
As incomplete as it is, I still had a lot of fun playing it.
But I do wonder if Gloria was meant to be a new character instead of being Trish.
Man, I wish we could have a 'perfect' dmc game, something like a combination of DMC: dmc levels, DMC3 story, DMC4 character variety (as long as it doesn't hurt the quality) and DMC5 gameplay.
And a playable Vergil from game's launch, because Vergil is the only character that matters and locking him behind special edition is bs.
@@thegoose8663 "Only character that matters" oh lord not this again.
The perfect dmc is dmc 1
@@2emo2function na it has the best atmospheric vibe but far from perfect lol mundus might just be one off the worst bosses in gaming history on dmd
@@heliax9924 Mundus is perfect especially the space harrier part.
(So theoretically Dante can create a Rock song in his head based on the Zettel, kind of puts an interesting spin on the Nevan scene from DMC3)
Vergil = Yagyu Shinkagen Ryu, a more cautious, quick and footwork focused variant of Kenjutsu, unlike most Kenjutsu styles often compared to Liechtenauer on their aggression, this style also focuses on adaptation.
Interesting note: this style of Kenjutsu was founded by Kamiizumi Nobutsuna a Buddist Monk (so ironically the Power Hungry and Social Darwinist Vergil practices the style of a more pacifistic person and also ironically promotes personal growth and change.)
Nero = Polish Style Saber Fencing, an Aggressive, Fast and frenetic form of Saber fencing, the Polish style relys on a whole lot of footwork and leans, the style was used by the famous Winged Hussars and nicknamed "the Hellish Cut" by a German Master.
Interesting note: the style is mostly lost, very little about it survived the turbulent history of Poland, so people who practice it today reconstruct it based on whats left and other styles like German, Turkic, Turkish and Hungarian, its also noted as seemingly not protecting the hands much. (Its kind of odd with how many coincidences this one snaged with Nero, the Winged Hussars, the Hands bit, the leaning but if true than Nero is the most dedicated one out of the 3 as he studied an almost lost art and mastered it though to be fair to the 2 especially Dante's, ironically as Liechtenauer is mostly learned through his student's manuals especially Mayer so only being relevant only for the 200 years of its existence until today while Yagyu Shinkagen Ryu has mostly remained relevant up to today, those are very difficult to research and learn too)
Despite it not being a finished game it still is enjoyable
This was a fun review of a great MegaTen spin-off
If there is one thing i would probably change is that not make Nero the son of Vergil/blood related to Sparda.
As they say, “The flinch in your eye calls your bluff,
Feel free to die when you've had enough,
Useless cause is breaking your back,
Your life will end, when you attack,
Make your move,
Make your stand,
Make the win,
(ha..) Like you can,
See the war,
See me rule,
See the mirror,
You'll see a fool,
To take me out, you must fight like a man,
(To take me out you must fight like a man)
You've yet to prove that you can,
(You’ve yet to prove me that you can)
I see your might and it compares to something,
(I see your might and it compares to something)
That is, if something is nothing,
(That is if something is nothing)
Time to figure,
Time to sin,
Your time's done,
When you begin,
Live for suffer,
Live for revenge,
Now your life,
Comes to an end,
Taste the blood,
Taste your fate,
Swallow your pride,
With your hate,
Your last breath,
Your last stance,
The last of all,
In your command,
Knee's in the blood with your crying pleas,
Wade in your sorrow, bathe in your fear,
Clear the mind of the righteousness suffered,
Witness the moment of your failure's prosper!”
What I thought after play all 5 games is that none of the 4 first matter at all. The fifth was so much better it’s the only one I’ll ever actually want to play again.
Bruh, where da DMC 5 Video. Your Videos to DMC are really good!
