The fact that Joseph Kucan voices Brandon amuses me greatly -considering he also plays the role of Kane in Westwood's "Command and Conquer" series. Night and day inasfar as roles go.
I love the maze. You leave a berry on each tunnel you choose and you leave the shade of berry to coincide with it. It's not that hard to get around in.
Have you ever played or seen a game as a child that you have almost no memory of? You can't remember the name, the plot, the music, the characters; you just remember that a game exists but literally nothing about it? That was this game for me. Every time I thought about it I would spend an hour or two thinking in the back of my head, trying to remember what it was. Thank you for finally solving this 2 decade long mystery for me Scarfhulu. I can sleep peacefully tonight.
I used to have one of those too, well it was a series of games actually, but every time I would describe it to someone it would just sound like ramblings of a madman. Then about a year ago we were talking about childhood games at university and ended in to this subject. As soon as I mentioned few key details about the series, an underclassman was like "Oh, you mean Bellini's bikinis." and I was released from my torment that had lasted for over a decade.
Over multiple playthroughs I learned how to navigate in the Serpent's Grotto. The key thing is marking each od the single room exits with glowing berries so you are able to backtrack your way back by following the shades of the berries placed back to the berry bushes. I even use the colorful stones (take a full inventory of these before you enter the grotto) to mark the special rooms - gold, moon, emerald and the way to lava pool.
Great video. I actually like when you spoil the endings since I usually don't plan on playing all the games I watch videos about (God there's so many), but you do you fam.
scarfhulu, I have to say that you are my favourite youtuber. even if you don't upload as fast as some other youtubers, whenever you do upload your videos they are always incredibly good and incredibly well made.
Dear Scarfulhu, I really love when you cover adventure games like this one. Titles I've never heard of that are just so fun and whimsical, it's really up your alley. It's a big part of why I loved your Dragonsphere video too. On Twitter you asked us what our favorite video of yours this year was, and I think I have to change my answer to this one. Easily one of the best videos you've done. Keep up the good work, my friend.
Protagonist having silly quips seemingly out of context looks rather charming. Also for the time, that is some top notch animation, Westwood really knew how to be clever with animation within game engine.
I wish I knew about this trilogy of games back when. The ads and cover art showed the super-creepy looking jester looking down from a tree, which just totally turned me off. If I had seen screenshots, I think I would have instantly wanted to play it.
Oh the fireberry caves! We wrote out the map and marked rooms with berries with a B, and marked death rooms with a big X, I remember my brother and I making the map together when we were playing and stashing it in the instruction book for future play throughs. Not nearly as bad as getting through the mines in Return to Zork with the code words in the dwarves' conversation... that was so awful! We didn't think it was that weird back then to draw out the map. It's just what you did like write down your save code grids from Megaman. This was our favorite point and click series growing up.
I had this as a kid and treasure it still to this day. It's nice to see the cave is such a notoriously hated part of the game because I literally had to draw out my own map years ago... and it helped substantially.
I absolutely love the Legend of Kyrandia series (the first being my favorite - I found Brandon's dialogue throughout the game to be so great!), although I feel like Legend of Kyrandia 2 was better designed (no mazes! Less random!) but Legend of Kyrandia 3... and the Cat Island is... a nightmare! I recently finished all three (long play and commentary) on my channel.
Played this game religiously as a child. As far as Adventure games goes, this game had a level of polish that most didn't. Westwood Studios was such a fun company, they made Kyrandia, Nox, and C&C. RIP Westwood Studios.
Ahh someone finally does a fully fledged Legend of Kyrandia review. And honestly, I did guess that if it was ever going to be done by anyone, it would be you! Couldn't agree more with you about the labyrinth though. I remember in 92 when I first played it as a wee child I couldn't get past it and quit. I only finished the game years later. I hope you will get around to the anomaly that is Malcolm's Revenge. It has the material to make a really fun review out of. So much so in fact that it'll be hard to pack it all in there. Maybe a 2 parter?
Well , i know it's kinda late , but you inspired me to play the whole serie which i just finished and what can i say.... Amazing games. 1,2,3 they are all awesome. the music are great , the plot is solid , characters i actually had pleasure to play with. Thank you for your advices. i just now want so much your reviews about hand of fate and malcolm's revenge (my favorite). it was a childhood memory but i never did it before. now i'm feeling more complete !
@@Scarfulhu Yesss, easily the best of the three. Varied, characteristic lands, a female protagonist who is not the traditional Strong Female Protagonist™, a great spellbook with better recipe puzzles than the MI series, and oodles of charm. Also, better dialogue.
Nice review/summary of the game. Wish you'd done all of it though... Maybe in the future put out two versions of videos covering games like this, where one hides the ending portion and another doesn't? Just a suggestion.
Hahahahahaha the Eric Andre reference ♥ Yeah the graphics were stunning when we got this in the early 90s. We would constantly start new games to look at the intro again and check out that depth of field effect. Though its randomness in puzzles made it kind of off putting, I loved playing it, and loved mapping out the Grotto with my brother and dad as a kid, strangely enough. Also, I think Frank Klepacki was a teenager when he wrote all the music for Kyrandia, which is baffling imo.
I am way late from when this was published but it was still a joy to watch. Kyrandia was the first game I played on a PC and it will always hold an important place in my nostalgia.
Well, watching Books 1 and 2 in the wrong order, but dang, I've got that point n click itch again this month. My mum was expecting to go into surgery for her hand, and needed a bunch of single hand game recommendations while she recovers. And being a huge Oddworld and Machinarium fan, point n clicks are heavy on the list. Definitely adding this one.
I used to mark the safe cavern entrances with the berry, so when placing berries: I put one berry on the entrance I came from and one berry to the entrance I will go through. When I have the last lit berry, I will live it at the entrance and backtrack. That way I will know which doorways are safe to travel and which not if I don't have berries.
Very great and fun review! The music in this game really shines if you have a Roland MT-32 or play this game with MUNT installed. Kyrandia and it's sequel have some of the best MT-32 soundtracks ever made in the DOS era.
There's just something charming about these old 90's adventure game stories. Have a macguffin of infinite power that can grant anyone the ability to control everything? Nah don't guard it, just leave it out. I'm sure it'll be fine.
As a backer of Mighty no 9 I can indeed confirm that a few of us are still up here, but my tears aren't of sorrow but of bitterness, I hope that didn't mess up the pool of sorrows to much,
Kyrandia 1 & 2 was always THE adventure games for me. It's basically my childhood (partially because it had russian transtations unlike many other games in that genre at the time.. 10y old me was not good with foreign languages). Kyrandia 2 is probably my fav adventure game of all time. It had some really clever things going on with it's potion brewing system and Zanthia is a sweetheart.
I used to have a few CDs called 20 Giant Games and it had Book 2 The Hand of Fate and I remember it being fun but challenging! It was funny because all the games were on different disks to what was printed on them
Woah woah woah. Follow a walkthrough for the fireberry maze? What are you saying?! Suffering through that goddamn maze, way back in the day without the availability of online walkthroughs, was an important part of my childhood. Everyone should be forced to meddle through it too, I say! Also, this was a good game. The second in the series, Hand of Fate, is a GREAT game.
Yeah, I suffered through it too. But what I'm saying is I don't think everyone has the patience these days to properly enjoy it as they might have done when the game came out. It could tarnish someone's opinion of the game if they didn't play it back in the day. Y'know?
I was quite young when this game came out and had no idea at the time you could drop the fireberries to keep rooms you left lit. I still beat Serpent's Grotto without a walkthrough, it just took far too long.
This is extremely similar to King's Quest 6. While watching I thought to myself, "have I seen this game befo- nope, that's king's quest..." Also 6:00 That Eric Andre feels so good on my skin
I would have been interested to know what the ending was, since I'm never going to be able to play this. Any chance you could put it after a spoiler warning in future vids or do you think you'll be leaving the end of games out of your videos from now on? (Really great video, by the way. Good job.)
Hey Scarfulhu, have you ever heard of a company called Daedalic? They're a German game company that makes a lot of point-and-click adventure games, and personally, I LOVE them! Since you're such a fan of point-and-clicks, I think you might find some enjoyment in their games too.
The game's villain is named Malcolm and he causes various mischief and treachery? He's not assisting the evil Kilokahn with creating megavirus monsters to attack electronic systems, is he?
Man, this game takes me back. I used to love playing through it, but I'm glad you didn't go easy on that stupid grotto. It's available on GOG to anyone else who wants to play it, by the way
When I was a kid a drew a map of the labyrinth on the paper: that was the only way I could beat it. Needless to say how many times I have died before I had to come up with this idea.
If you're looking for other Westwood games to play, try the Blade Runner point-and-click adventure game. I freaking love it to death, so I really want to see what you think of it.
"No my mother is dead but your mother lives for it is surely she who dressed you." Omg I'm dying lol!
I guess Brandon's not so dumb after all.
That line had me howling the first time I heard it
