I just this day bought a bolero jacket that I came upon in a resale shop. I have always wanted one but felt too self conscious about my body. I bought that sucker and I am gonna rock it! Curves and all because I am beautiful.

Okay, you convinced me--added all three of you lovely ladies! As a long-time quilter who has NEVER sewn clothes, I am completely intimidated by the idea of starting such an adventure at 65 years old! But I have bolts of quilting cotton that I got at a store closing intending them for the backs of quilts, and looking at them the other day thought, "I could maybe make myself some Hobbit-y sorts of pinafores, if I can find a size 24 pattern." What a rabbit hole that led me down! I was already a fan of Bernadette and Abby Cox, coming in from the Jane Austen side of things. The thought of actually *making* such clothes seemed beyond me! But perhaps not, after all. So thank you, and I look forward to bingeing your content!

I find that thinking about fashions through history can help. Every body type existed. People were not expected to be the fashionable shape. Padding and squishing were not only acceptable but normal. Expecting humans to be the same shape naturally that people used to achieve with corsets is a new concept, and really damaging.

Thank you! I"m short, short waisted, and round. I've sewn for years so that I'd have clothing that fits. Even then, patterns are a pain, as they have not been made for real people. I appreciate your body positive CoSy video.

Whenever I make a garment that’s based in the 1940s or 1950s I feel like a movie star. I don’t have a full length mirror so I don’t know what I really look like. But I will throw on big hats and pearls and feel fab. I hate pictures of me but if I see one of me wearing those pieces I can see the joy on my face, fat belly and all. I’m planning a wardrobe based in the 40s and 50s, damn it all! Life comes once and I’m in!

This is perfect, I needed this, thank you!
Future video ideas: how to make your clothes adaptable to shifting weight (the skirt I have been wearing for the last 3 months doesn't fit now, but I know from past experience that it will fit again in a few month... I don't know why... but I don't want to stop wearing that skirt. What can I do?)
I'm not used to wearing close fitting clothes (been wearing baggy too long) and am uncomfortable with corsets and structured clothes simply because I'm not used to it. How can I ease into getting used to structure in clothes so they don't end up in the back of the closet?
How do I figure out a silhouette that will look flattering on me? I haven't found one yet... (I just want to look in the mirror and go, wow, this makes me look good!)
I have been struggling with all of this, it's hard to be body positive when you can't figure out how to dress your body.
Thank you for your videos, they really help!

I hear you on the structured garments. :) After 18 months of yoga pants and sweatshirts, I am also finding Real Peopling Clothes a bit hard to wear. You might look at clothes made out of knits but in a structured design. I've seen some knit blazers made out of stretch velour and gray sweatshirt fabric. Ease into it slowly. You might look at knit fit and flare dresses as they look good on just about any body.
So many people have this same frequent weight fluctuations. You might look at wrap around garments and ones with drawstrings that can change the width. Let us know how it goes!

I'm just curious, with corsets, are you actually uncomfortable with them because you've worn one, or are you uncomfortable with the idea of wearing one. I ask because I was a bit uncomfortable with the idea of wearing a corset, but then I started making my first one and, during the mock-up stage without bones, found it reassuringly comfortable. I still have to get the bones into it for the final fitting, but I expect to be very comfortable in even with the bones. And I've been in baggy clothes for most of my 67 years. And remember that the back lacing allows you to have it as tight or loose as you want it to be. Tight lacing to where you can't breathe is an overused trope just in the movies. And if you still don't want to do a corset, a set of stays might be more your jam. They are not as constricting as a corset because the stiffening is mostly cording. There's my 2 cents.

Suvia, thanks so much for this! really hit me where I live now- in a body that seems bound and determined to disintegrate. It is a serious struggle..
My internal vision of myself is from about 25 years ago, when I was about 120lbs, in good shape, on the Dean's list, my kids were doing well, and my college boyfriend was pretty spiffy. But now? I walk past a mirror or shop window, and I'm shocked- and don't recognize myself. Now, I know I'll never look like that again, but that picture of myself in the back of my head taunts me...
I love to wear clothes with a 50s vibe, and they do look pretty good on me. From the front, at least. Turn to the side or back and... But at least I know that I look good, mostly, and I always get compliments from people on my outfits- which is something that doesn't happen when I'm wearing leggings and a tshirt. So I'm weariing more skirts and dresses, and except for having to iron stuff (I HATE ironing), I'm enjoying my clothes more. And that's good for me.
(I can't wait to get out of this hospital gown...)

And I will pray to St. Austrebertha that you will heal from these evil humors and soon be back in the loving arms of your family. signed, Auntie Suvia, yer granny

Raising hand high! I had back pain. He told me to lose weight. What I needed was physical therapy. I asked for a referral and got it fixed. Be your own advocate and tell the doctor to note refusal to do any tests or giving a diagnosis of fat. Once they put it in writing, they often see how dumb that looks.

Wear it, wear it all. When I wear my weird things I get so many compliments, some strange looks, but I’ve also had strangers chase me down the street to ask about a piece. BTW I’m a 52 yo gray haired little old lady so don’t tell me you can’t pull it off. Enjoy your sewing!
