After years of growing garlic, I just learned something new - the browning of the leaves means they need more food.....amazing, and thank you for this video!

    Thanks for the video!
First time garlic grower here. I planted 36 soft neck (12 in three planters) last fall, and everything seemed to be as it should be through the winter.
Today I noticed that there is some browning on the leaves, and lust did a feeding using 'Miracle Grow' (18-18-21), which is all I have on hand. Going out for a bottle of Alaskan Fish today so I can keep up with it.
I tossed some 'bunching onion' seeds in between the rows a couple weeks back. I hope that doesn't mess things up.

Great advice, I was wondering what was causing the browning /yellowing at the tips. I wasn’t sure if it was a watering problem.
    Thank you.

What's good for swelling the bulbs? I usually use liquid fertiliser made from grass cuttings and seaweed. This is great for leaves but not good for under soil foods like potatoes and carrot etc

Great video, thank you. I live in CA, we are having Avery wet/cold winter soon to be spring weather. I fertilized one week ago with fish emulsion. So I am clear regarding fertilization. Fish emulsion only or mix it up with some good compost or another side dressing. I am 100% organic so no synthetic fertilizers please. Thank you.

Hi there, could you recommend when to STOP fertilizing with the fish Emulsion? I have never needed to fertilize my garlic in the past, but last year we moved to an area with different soil and I was not happy with my crop. I grow about 200 bulbs/season. Nice video and, btw, I heard your voice just fine! Thank You!!!

We stop feeding fish in mid-June, ~1 month before harvest, and we've found they cure/store much better if they don't have tons of nutrients at the end :)

Thank you for this info! I was thinking that to grow the garlic bulb, in early spring I should add bone meal....but my leaves are browning and it makes sense to feed them fish emulsion! Thanks again

It's now June and I only just found out I've not been feeding my garlic enough. My plants have few healthy leaves, most are brown or yellow. I'm hoping I can save them but it's probably too late this year. At least next year I'll know how to fertilize them properly. Thanks!

Learning about how to grow garlic takes more than a short podcast? Do you plan on doing a live interactive zoom seminar? I am trying to grow a quarter acre of garlic for a hobby business. I planted Music and German Red. The weather was hot last fall/early winter causing the garlic to grow to early. This spring has been wet, cold/hot, and not dry. Some of my garlic looks great, others are small and withered. How can I boost them in mid May to grow a bigger bulb?

I noticed the leaves at the bottom of my garlic plants were starting to yellow. It was suggested that I sprinkle blood meal into the soil...which I did. How often should do this? Your garlic looks amazing, I wish I had that much! My little 4’ by 4’ square will have to do!

    Hi.
I still have my chopped leafs as mulch on my garlic field. It's now April 14th 2021. Q. Should I leave it on or take it off. Or leave it all the way until harvest?
I live in North Carolina so basically the soil is clay.
But in the beginning I did a mixture to soften the soil.
Also is it time to fertilize with fish emulsion?
    Please respond ASAP.
    Thanks
    Jules.

    • @FruitionSeeds
      @FruitionSeeds  3 года назад +1

Hi Jules, we keep the leaf mulch on our garlic through the whole season, which keeps weeds away and nourishes the garlic. We like to use fish emulsion on the leaves when they begin to yellow, about every 2 weeks.

When I opened them up the cloves were transparent and almost oily.
    What would cause this?

The video is good and your garden looks great BUT 1 oz of fish emulsion to 1 gallon of water is only half of the information needed. At what rate do you apply this concentration of fertilizer/water? Is your one gallon used over X# of sq/ft or lineal feet? How do you calculate your application rate?
Also, knowing how many plants are roughly being fed in each lineal foot or sq/ft. of your garden so that we all, out here watching, could convert the application rate to our growing style, as some of us are sq/ft gardeners, some lineal foot or row gardeners and others prefer raised beds, use pots and planters, or combinations of growing/planting styles. Knowing the concentration alone is not as useful as also knowing the area application rate and number of plants in the area being treated. From there we can convert to our gardens without over or under applying nutrients.
    Thanks!

Though we have drip irrigation on much of our farm, we don't irrigate the garlic, they're on their own! Mulching well really helps reduce their need for rain, as well. Where are you growing?

Sometimes that’s normal you just keep it in the ground for another year and then it will finally split into the cloves, there are multiple reasons why it happens
