Announced during Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase as a celebration of the Phantasy Star Online franchise's 20th anniversary, this massive update overhauled the game system and graphics engine. Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis will release globally in North America and Japan on June 9, 2021.

I wish it was more like PSO1 and more about that addictive oldschool Diablo-style grinding for redboxes, unique weapons with special effects, levels and less about fashion/waiting for random emergency quests.. But I guess most people don't care much for that type of gameplay anymore :(

Me and my friend have been playing the original PSO off and on, since it came out, (split screen) offline. We were too young at the time to figure out how to take it online but still to this day are in love with it. We tried PSO2 last year and it was an assault to the senses..about a decade of updates all introduced at once made our heads spin, especially after coming from the now 20yr old original PSO. and while we could see the original PSO’s spirit thru the cracks, it was just a very alien as well as intimidating and just felt like everything was cranked up to 11 including the art. I was a bit sad but this new version seems like it could be the answer.. I can be there at the start and things are still relatively simple. We’re going to try to play together shortly now that we’ve completed the tutorials and I have hopes, because like Johnny I’ve been a PS fan since I was too young to remember (PS1 was my first game I ever played)
Even if its just a skin, playing a character you enjoy can make a world of difference. Maybe its just me but i often do not use the best stats armor in RPGs if the look of it doesn't please me.

I started playing PSONGS and its my first Phantasy Star game ever! - after playing it I started to search the phantasy star history and stumbled upon your channel! I can’t stop playing… I also play the base PSO2. - the world develops and technology does too so why not embrace the new graphics and movement and gameplay? :) let’s embrace NGS support it and improve it
Game has a long way to go. It’s fun but lacks a real reason to play.

One thing as a solo player that I enjoy, the game doesn’t try to force you into making parties with strangers. Now, you can absolutely kill enemies in the same area as other players that are there, and everyone benefits just the same. Sometimes I’ll just be running past someone and their kills drop items for me. Basically the game doesn’t make me feel stressed like other online rpg’s do.
Plus earning skill points from cocoons and towers on one class earns them for all of your classes (and extra characters you make too), so there’s no need to repeat those trials. Makes it easier to focus on just leveling other things.
But yeah, this game needs more to do. I’m waiting for Braver to be available so I can finally level my other character.

Finding the cocoons on your own is part of the adventure imo (took me a while but found them all), no spoiler maps for me.

Kind of wish Phantasy Star would go back to just being a solid meal of a single player experience. Dragon Quest still feels classic.
I wish so too. Unfortunately as long as Anime Waifus and Tropes as well as minimal effort into characters (ie SEGA not giving a damn) and story make the big bucks that's probably not gonna happen anytime soon

Phantasy Star 2 is one of my most favorite games and experiences from the 16-bit Era. Long before Aeris was impaled on Sephiroth's word, there was Nei. Oh, and let's not forget that Uzo Island music...it's playing in my head as I type this. Game on, Johnny!
I'm playing PSO2:NGS on Xbox Series X, all graphics/visuals maxed, 60fps. I'm 10~ hours in. I am in love. Disclaimer: I have not started PSO2 (OG) yet. The combat in NGS is amazing! It feels like a super high-quality hack and slash. As a hardcore FF fan, I have to give the torch to NGS when it comes to combat and world exploration, its way more fun than either FFXI or FFXIV.
I wish they would make Phantasy Star V, or a proper reboot of the main series. Single player and offline. I just don't enjoy MMO's, as I don't have the time or patience for them.

Mirrors my feelings exactly. I wasn't feeling the first character I made either then once I hit a brick wall at level 17, decided to make a new character while waiting for new content. First character was a Techter. Made a Ranger and loving it. Maybe just need those new skills to be added? Definitely need more missions though.
If the legends skin are here for ROLF, I think there should be the skin for Nei and Rika.
I know they did those skin in PSO2 and I wish more people talked about it.
Basically my thoughts exactly. Though the customization options are WAY too limited. 4 new costumes each for the genders and that includes casts.
I really just wanted something that screams phantasy star without paying money and only the force outfits give me the phantasy star feel. We really need more content though and hopefully an Alys costume soon.
And a PS4 release so I can play in my own house :)

I do really really love your channel. Literally u made me a fan of this saga. I've been playin' all the games and now that I got into New Genesis I'm totally in love with it, such a good game. Yeah it lacks content but I'm sure it will get better and better. Lookin' forward for the Bouncer class omg

Curious if you've kept up on or revisited this since! Recently dove (back) and gave it a thorough run through. Interesting being bombarded with popups and content everywhere, when my initial thought was still 'oh it has very little to do.' Honestly got pretty overwhelmed with it all & what i should even be doing, but having rolled a new char & making an effort to soak in all the tutorials/pop up prompts etc, enjoying it tons better

The Rolf skin!!!!!???? Dude that’s amazing! What about Rudo? We’ve been meaning to play this multiplayer and original phantasy star skins is a HUGE selling point!
If you find the Rolf in black instead of blue and you end up with Rudo, which is what I'd use since I main Gunner and Ranger :)
Yeah I've been playing since launch and you pretty much nailed it. Unfortunately there still needs more content but so far I find the combat very fun. Right now the only thing there is to do is just grind to level 20 and max out your gear. At least braver class will be coming soon.

Agreed. One thing however... the server's... I'm hoping they can get it run a bit more steady. I Crash sometimes, that's ok, but often when fighting Giga's the lag hits big and everyone around you freeze's. Then it kicks back in, then back to freeze mode. Maybe picking less populated blocks might help? Really enjoying anyway though. There's not enough hours in the day.
Text still looks incredibly small. That was one of my main gripes about PSO2 when it came out last year and trying to read it just gives me a headache. I wish developers would learn from Dead Rising to not make the text too damn small.
I got IP blocked from the Japanese version of PSO2 NG so I simply quit as I have 0 desire to start over from scratch on global. Also VPNs slows up my already not so fast connection.

Good perspective! I love Phantasy Star 2 too. They do a great job of bringing on references and elements from the older games.
Good review. Totally agree with you. This is a great basis for a really good game. It certainly needs more content now. I'm still doing my dailies but that's all. I'll definitely put in some more time when they give us more stuff.

IMO…I don’t like New Genesis. Didn’t play much, but it looks like it turned PSO into a generic MMO. I preferred the smaller Diablo-like setup of the older games. Just my take. Enjoy it if you like it too, of course!
Gonna be honest, as a huge fan of PSO2 classic with almost 1000 hours, but I really can't get into NG.
The world looks beautiful, it does a better job at explaining things, the multiweapon idea is pretty cool, but the cons outweigh the pros.
The combat somehow feels worse than Ep.6 PSO2 classic with limited PAs, storyline and characters have so far been entirely forgettable,
there is zero quest variety, the BP system feels ways too restrictive, and in general feels boring after the first few hours.
There is a good foundation here, but it feels like a glorified beta and very generic. Most of my alliance has quit or only does dailies 1 month in.
I want to love this game and maybe one day I will, but I'm moving over to FF14 and gonna check back in a year and see if they have fixed my core complaints.
The BP is fine so you wont be baggage later on urgent quest. The problem is upgrading weapon and armor, give too little BP increase

Interesting, I just started playing New Genesis and I was disappointed that it was different from the old PSO I used to love. Very aerobatic with the gunner class. I switched to the ranger for a more classic feel.
Release delayed to early this year (2023) on Steam/PS4 - Unsure aboure about Xbox as not owned. Tech problems but resolved.. Networking was buggy.. OK!
I stopped at the battle points cap. I kept trying to buff my gear and it failed every time, after like 10 attempts I was like "i'm done, this is so unnecessary"

This game allows you to be a flying robot boxer who also casts magic spells, and it's 2 games for free!
I am ones of those guys that start to play pso2 NGS and right now jumping to the old games to experience it and most importantly buy the available costume there. I can see a lot of new people like me and it is stupid for Sega to pull the plug and not supporting the base games as there are lot of people still playing those games and helping the community alive.

As you said that is the problem the lack on content. I like the game a lot but you hit the content cap really early. Hopefully they will fix it going forward but there is nothign to hold people atm. It would have being fine if there was no competition but people are not going to stick around they will play other games.
I'm a long time veteran of PSO and PSU, I somehow missed the bandwagon when PSO2 came out and after all this time I don't feel like there's much reason in getting it unfortunately. That said I've been playing the heck out of PSO2NGS and it is honestly such a fun game. I ended up recreating my favorite PSO character, a mechgun wielding hunter. (in this case translating to a gunner/bouncer multiclass). Seems there has been some significant updates since this review was made, and I admit to being very new to this game so I am unable to make an accurate comparison, but it feels like there is plenty to do in this game.
The content-draught is of course the downside of this game as every player is aware. However, to me, the complete lack of aesthetic items that players can earn by just playing the game is very stupid. Especially in a franchise that has a butt-load of aesthetics to choose from. New players that don't play or don't want to play normal PSO2 will just have their base character throughout the entire PSO2 NGS playthrough, maybe even forever if Sega keeps these aesthetics behind a paywall.
Yea, considering how other players put high price for this cosmetics on player shop. Not really behind a paywall because you can buy it from other player, but I really dont like sometimes, what people on player market do
I have zero tolerance for anything that isn't on the Saturn or Dreamcast, and this game surely isn't changing my mind,but it's interesting to see nonetheless.

I'd like to get you or Robs thoughts on the series as a whole, ups and downs of course but most importantly all the new and familiar stuff we can expect from the new Next-Gen version.

Cosmetics make you play better. They just do, when you can make your character YOUR character it just feels better and you feel better, then you start playing better.

The first and only Phantasy star game I ever played was Portable. So PSO2 feels much more familiar to me but I prefer NGS' combat style. It feels more responsive and active, while PSO2 plays with my nostalgia with items like Monomate, atomizers and such. That said, both games are amazing in their own way in my opinion
I wanted to get into PSO2, but I couldn't because of the overwhelming bloat from 8+ years of updates, currencies, etc. Like you said in the review, NGS does a WAY better job at easing new players in, and so this game sunk its teeth into me HARD. Its a bit light on content, but what's there is sick, and its not like I have a shortage of other games to occupy my time while I wait for the next update, lol. My favorite part is definitely the world. Its the closest that we've gotten to Xenoblade X2, just with the whole "Pandora-esque" aesthetic it has going on. I love just going out in the world and soaking in the vibes as I mindlessly kill some mobs.

This game is kickass! I've been watching videos on this channel about phantasy star for like 6 months and I finally have my own experience. Custom character creation is a treat and the combat?!? Where the hell has this game been?! I'll probably wonder into PSO at some point. But for now PSO2 is awesome

Being a brand new player to mmo genre and pso2 in general, I absolutely adore this game. The movement the customization and the gameplay has been a pleasure.
Yea I loved that NGS went back to how phantasy star originally was. The problem still stands however NGS is a "wonderful very vertical wasteland" with little to no connection for the players outside the city besides killing stuff.
Your friends are what keeps NGS alive along with the base game.
They're focusing way too much on adding stuff to the city instead of the open world.
1. Wondering NPCs with rare quests.
2. Gigas should of been raid boss tower.
3. Minigames(vollyball at beach)examp.
4.Make SAs bigger and animated.
5.Make cooking a little more detailed. I love the way it is now(monster hunter clone) but the way it's executed is the problem. Maybe a mini photon kitchen when you're cooking. Perhaps a menu that shows like a mini farm from top view allowing players to grow stuff. This will open up a wide range of seeds and crazy stuff to grow.

Players can open the Quickmenu then mini shop. They will go into a LA action holding up a sign of their shop's name in this mode. Players who click on them will get the option to open their mini shop. A small list of what ever their selling will pop up no more then 5. The shop will not be posted on the player shop list but is instead public to who is around them(who can see/click on them).

1. Allow players to block avatars/messages and change settings to limit view distance. Perhaps even a white/black list.
I play Final Fantasy XIV and i get one crash only in a 600+ hours gametime.
And anyway, its normal nowdays for this genre of games to came out with little content and be expanded through time. That only depend by the dev team, and i think the Phantasy Star team is a good one. Just give them time and they will deliver. And gain, as you said, its free.

Lol, just getting started on New Genesis and first thoughts are pretty similar, eases you in a little better than previous PSO games, and looks gorgeous....but you never mentioned the OST...the soundtrack is bouncing and I love it. Exactly what I look forward to in a sega JRPG.

FS on the PSP always grabbed me but I never finished them . I do like the style of these games . I'd love to see this on the Switch.

Man... I wish it wasn't 30hours for it to get good. The original fantasy Star only took about an hour before you really started loving that game. I can't put in that much time to like PS... I love PS on Dreamcast but... This isn't it.
I’ve enjoyed NGS so far, but I was enjoying PSO2 a little more as of June. I’d have been fine with waiting til fall for the release. Agreed the world and music are beautiful. The game runs really well on my fairly potato laptop, and maybe at most a crash per week while playing every day. But yeah, the content. I’m as patient as they come but even I’m worried about the next level cap being January.
Would like to play this on the NintendoSwitch…. Maybe when they decide to port it…

Imagine a HD Remake of a Phantasy Star much like we got the FF7 one.... That would be AWESOME.
The problem is might never happened the Online series is basically one their biggest cash cow in Japan.
As much I want a remake it going hard for them because they have Atlus as the RPG studio and now Yakuza is going to become an RPG thanks to Yakuza 7
@@zetamangads Nothing is stopping them from setting an MMORPG in post-Phantasy Star 4 Algol.
They can either do a distant future thing where Algol acts as an interstellar travel hub and the main source of early game content. Maybe Chaz, Rika, Rune, Wren, and the rest can be regarded with the same reverence that the Phantasy Star 1 cast is in Phantasy Star 4
Or they can start shortly after Phantasy Star 4 with the rehabilitation of Algol and then gradually venture out to the stars as Sega develops the game world. Being a Hunter, Warrior, Scholar, Esper, Numan, or cleric affect where you start and which characters serve as major NPCs in the early game. Maybe we could see additional classes and archetypes for Motavians and Dezorians.
Hell, with both types you could have a Langrisser Mobile-style time mechanic that allows for quests and scenarios from previous eras of Phantasy Star.
@@diegoarmando5489 true but I think the problem is they rather no do that, mainly because the mmorpg are meant to be their own separate thing, they can bring back classic characters as costume and bring classic location as references other that they won't do anything with the classic.

The release of NGS honestly have as much content as PSO2 had when it came out 8 years ago. Sadly it's just how they do things now.
I love the game. But I kind of wish they used this engine to make HD remakes of the old games. Similar to what was done for FF7. Just so the current generation could experience where it all came from even though it's vastly different now.
I'm still waiting for it on ps4 if it still comes out on it for the west, seen multiple articles that it will but no date what so ever

Say hello to a team member of the translation project - I've been playing this for over 4 years on PC.. Wait for Halloween and Christmas. Japanese servers last year was brilliant.. MAIN lobby - 3 players walked up the steps in the lobby and started line dancing!!
