No wonder Gordon Lightfoot kept touring all his life. Probably trying to make back what his divorce settlement cost him. Cheating really is not worth it. The only good thing to come out of Lightfoot's affair with Cathy Smith was the song "Sundown."

@sharonjensen... - Gordon was a simple guy, who LOVED the life of a minstrel & THAT'S why he kept such an extensive tour schedule; NOT because he was someone driven by money!! I KNOW, because I was a close friend of his for MANY years!! He was good w/money & made MANY smart investments, but he was "casual" enough about money that he allowed his 1st wife, Brita, to completely manage his money for YEARS after their divorce was final. He had a deep, abiding respect for Brita, & loved their children, Fred & Ingrid. He carried w/him a keen sorrow for the failure of that marriage, but life on the road exacts a heavy toll. Still, in all, he LOVED writing ,touring, performing, testing his limits & pushing the boundaries.

@surfootage - I hope I have your name right. As a close friend of Gordon Lightfoot for many years, I also am getting up in years, so my eyes aren't what they used to be. 😊 I wish people everywhere knew what an incredibly decent & loyal guy he was!! Yes, he cheated on Brita, but he paid dearly for that lapse - & NOT just money!!
Cathy Smith took full advantage of Gordon's feelings of guilt & his deep sense of loyalty (qualities she lacked completely) when she needed help.

At 16, Cathy quit school. Her father suggested she try her hand at data processing, but she went in a different direction: rock ’n’ roll.
After hearing a band called the Hawks at the Grange tavern in Hamilton, she became smitten with the group’s smooth-talking, Southern-drawling American drummer Levon Helm. The Hawks would later become the Band, a pioneering roots-rock quintet featuring Helm and four Canadians.
