*What it looks like at first:* Oh no, Shin went crazy for good. *What it really turns out to be:* After receiving that letter, Shin began to break down under the weight of guilt and trauma for all the comrades he felt he had personally killed (Even though they were already practically dead, and Shin helped them not to become part of the Legion)
I find it weird a lot of people missed the meaning behind Shin's eye getting cut, normally, anyone would respond to that and shut their eye in an attempt to protect their eye, Shin didn't even acknowledge it. That's how zoned out he was.
@@ZuleykaOrtega I never read the novel, only watched the anime so I can't truly understand what the author meant with this moment in the novel but in this scene it's obvious that Shin is lost in his mind, trapped with the role he's given himself as a real life grim reaper and his trauma of watching all his friends die from a young age, giving him severe survivor's guilt as he grew up. He wasn't focused on the battle or himself, and he was basically on autopilot as he fought, while he wasn't at all aware of what was actually happening within the battle.

Neat little symbolism that was shown, at 1:23. After shin hears the voice of lena, he snaps back to reality, shifting over from the dark and dead soil, over towards the much more vibrant, green grass. Amazing little details like these are awesome to see!
All he wants is to die. The guilt of his fallen comrades. The inability to live without fighting. It's weighing on him; he smiles because he believes he is about to die, he believes he is about to reunite with his fallen comrades. But then, something tugs at the back of his mind and his right ear twitches. The memory of a voice floods his mind, a voice so sweet and calming. He remembers this voice, how often they spoke. How optimistic she was... how determined she was to see them all survive. Lena... she wanted them to live... if he died now, then he wouldn't be able to hold his head high in death. He grits hit teeth; his battle is not yet over. His war is not yet over. His life is not yet over... not until there's nothing left for him except to die.

I think one of the biggest strengths of this anime is how it uses directing to put you in the heads of the characters. When it gets quiet and we see everyone reacting to shin going ballistic, it takes some time to just show us his position on the radar, moving erratically from enemy to enemy as they disappear. The way his marker is moving feels so janky and he’s not responding so you understand what his comrades are feeling. The other strengths of this anime are the action, the animation, the VA work, the soundtrack, the story in general… wait a minute, that’s just everything! Guess it just rules and everyone should watch it.

It's amazing how incredible a series can be when the studio shows passion and adheres to the light novel. It's actually insane how far above and beyond they've gone to make scenes like this feel so amazing

Damn I didn't know a decent amount of people didn't like her, considering her backstory, it isn't hard to see that she'd be an important factor to the story
It's so hard to have to see the 86 continue to fight. Yes, it was their choice and they feel they are betraying their dead comrades by not fighting, but this is all the result of being child soldiers, who literally grew up like cannon fodder in a country full of racists and hypocrites, and don't know any other way to to live.
The tragic thing is that this is just Shin who has no purpose. Originally the 86 simply had to live until they died, but now, he no longer has an end in sight and he has no interest in a future... he just seeks the death that was promised to him. v.v
except one lingering thought, thinking about someone he used to talk to every night. Even if he thinks she's dead, there is still some hope left in him.
I was so scared shin was going to die at this moment, i dont know why but in eighty six i actually feel scared of characters dying, such a nice story that get you into characters too much
You realize in like episode 4 or 5 that plot armor isn't a thing in this show and yes, anyone can get killed. This is a very grounded in reality war story like that.

Hands down, my favorite series this year. It sucks that the recent episodes have been getting released every other week though. I hope the production team is doing alright, and I completely understand if they’re reworking some scenes to being out better quality episodes. Then again, I can’t wait for the next episodes, and every week of not seeing the latest release is killing me inside!

There are a numerous amount of favorable characters, but my favorite would most likely be the main female protagonist of the first season. Her conviction is madly respectable, and I value her traits and aspirations. Lastly, yes, I highly recommend this series to anyone. It has some concepts that can be a bit heavy, so if you’re easily disturbed by tragic events, it’s probably not for you. This anime series also contains some really well made CGI, and it blends in very nicely. The music production is also top notch, having producers such as the legendary Hiroyuki Sawano. I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Also, the first season covered pretty much all of Light Novel 1 while this second season has been adapting the 3rd so it won't finish the whole season. Mainly since the light novels aren't finished yet
My god the character development this character goes through in the series is one of the best parts of the light novel probably the best if I’d say apart from him and Lena’s love story

His body and mind have long been in tatters, seems like continuously fighting is the only way he can feel himself. All those comrades expect him to give them a easy death with his pistol, but who else can redeem him? None, because eventually all of them will leave him behind. Except Lena...

As Fredrica said in one of the episodes, "you are a softie Shin." I finished the anime not too long ago but just realized that in this scene is practically having a mental breakdown in the form of running straight into the legion and smiling bc he thinks hes gonna die

It's that soundtrack man. It's literally Godly. Brings out feelings of pure awe. And knowing it stems from Shin losing his sense of self and reason for living just makes it hit even harder. Also, they announced a "first anniversary" event for April 2022 a couple days ago, and that along with the hype and sales of LN and merch I think we have a real good chance of volumes 4+ being adapted. And that'll be insanity

On V8 last chapter (been putting it off for months) and so far im really liking theos conflict and him not being able to let go of his pride like the others are trying to do so when that hell is over and done with they can possibly do something else and step away from the battlefield but i know some won’t be able to see that come true
The only scene in my mind from 86 that rivals this was the ending of one of the episodes in S2. The ending song was on point, really felt that dread (I think it may have been S2 ep.7). Sound in this show was an absolute gem

When even his comrades of about 3 years at this point realize something is off you know he's going to far
Comrades for one year (except raiden) the others came from different squads prior to joining spearhead
This show is the standout of the season. Finding out the ost is a colab between Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto just solidifies it’s spot at #1
His smile manages to look cool and scary at the same time.
When given into context, this scene was actually kinda sad
i can't wait til lena finally shows up at the end of this season because then shin will finally have some form of therapy
