- Join us on Amtrak Coast Starlight (35 hours in a roomette, Los Angeles to Seattle).
We'll give you a tour of the Amtrak roomette, dining car options on Amtrak, as well as what it's like in the observation car on Amtrak. We left from Los Angeles Union Station and arrived to the Seattle King Street Station a few minutes ahead of time. It was a fun ride. If you've never ridden on an Amtrak Superliner or done an overnight trip in a room or roomette, we totally recommend it!
We hope you enjoyed this Amtrak Coast Starlight review and tour!

I live in Sacramento and I’ve been wanting to take this same line to Seattle or Vancouver. Seems cozy.
Great video, thank you!!!!!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks so much for introducing me to the Coast Starlight. I have been able to plan short day trips with my young grandson along this route. I cant wait until things open back up so we can go to Disneyland and the Monterey Bay Aquarium on this train.
I've taken this trip before... Loved it !!! So Smooth and comfortable.😊
Glad to hear that!
A little narration would be nice but it looks like a nice trip.
I had a beautiful trip on the Starlight coming south from Seattle. The ride parallel to the ocean was at sunset. The train slowed down as the sun set over the ocean. KUDOS TO AMTRAK. Dan...my car attendant was great...extremely friendly, and super helpful.
Coworker just took this trip in the roomette. He said don't expect a great sleep at night but well worth the trip and to bring snacks and your own drinks. Over all a great time and worth it.
Can we bring electric kettle inside ? or sort of kitchen appliance to use in the room?
Helpful! Thanks

I've rode northbound from Sacramento to Seattle twice, returning from watching my son play football. Fantastic ride! We'll be riding northbound again in September from Emeryville to Seattle, heading home from seeing Sac State play at Cal.
Oh, I needed that ... thank you!
In July of 2019, I went round-trip from San Francisco (Emeryville), to Seattle, to visit with former colleagues. I, too, had a roomette, and it was a wonderful journey.
All of that was pre-Covid, and I was happy to hear you say that it was a fairly full train. There have been some RUclips videos, from Amtrak, that are intended to reassure passengers of their vigilance, in terms of pandemic cautions. It's good to see a report from only a week ago.
Now, you have me thinking of taking another jaunt up to Seattle ... just for the fun of travelling somewhere for a couple of days. This is great! I wish you luck with your channel.
I just took this train using the southbound route. Keep in mind the age of the cars varies widely so what any RUclipsr is going to show are newer nicer cars. The roomette I had was clearly showing its age, but still functional. I did pass through some coach cars that were very worn. Ate my meals in all locations; roomette, dining car, and observation car. Eating in the observation car was the best, but often tables aren't available because some passengers spend most of their time there. Eating in the dining car was ok if you are ok with sharing a table with strangers. This happened even when there were vacant tables; the dining car staff said they were directed to use as few tables as possible (maybe so they have to clean fewer tables?). Truly the best part of the trip was the car attendant. We had the best attendant (Justin), who patiently and cheerfully answered all our questions and checked back with us several times as he was running around helping other passengers to make sure we were comfortable. The two things I'd recommend is to bring your own travel pillow that you're used to (sorry Amtrak pillows are useless) and an eye mask to block out light when trying to sleep since the drapes let through a lot of light from the corridor. Lastly, relax and be flexible. Our train was mostly running 5 to 30 minutes late due to traffic along the route.
I vote that Amtrak’s Coast Starlight is the most beautiful train journey in the USA. You see everything from the beaches of SoCal to to the San Francisco Bay to the mountains of Northern California and Southern Oregon to the Williamette valley and the Columbia River to the Puget Sound. It’s a great trip and highly recommended 👍
People say the Zephry is the best.
Did the rails sound like "you forgot your flash drive, you forgot your flash drive...?" 😂
This is so great! I’m on the Amtrak site, how did you book this? The website is not very intuitive. A link would be great! Thanks!
To actually book the trip the phone app works well. To look over the routes and details, definitely tablet or computer. I don't know why the booking aspect of it all works on the app best. I could never do it on the computer.
In most videos I see people are taking the coast starlight northbound. Is this a coincidence or do you recommend this direction more?
I'm riding the coastal starlight from Seattle to Portland, then im taking a normal route to pasco Washington where my mom is picking me up haha, I have been out of town visiting family 😄
I hope to take the Starlight to Seattle and walk right into the magnificent King Street Station. That's like traveling back in time!
✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️ Nice VLOG! Thank you for sharing!Hi from Travelly 👍
Did the lounges have snacks during COVID-19?
Yes
the video was great but that continual noise beat was awful
Would it be difficult to find vegan food on train please?? Anyone??
Thank you for sharing. I'm planning on going this year.
I rode the Coast Starlight from Oakland to LA last year during Christmas. It’s an awesome train, but we didn’t get to see the ocean because it was 3 1/2 hours late and dark outside. Anyway, thanks for the video!
At the time of ticket purchase do you have the option of choosing a roomette on the other side of the train? , that would put you on the ocean side perhaps a better view , And the meals are included with the price of a roommette correct ?
The meals are included but you don't get to pick the room. If you call in you can pick upper or lower level though afterward. They can't guarantee which direction the train will face though.
@@GroundedLifeTravel I understand what you are saying I'm sure those are the procedures put in place by Amtrak , But logic would dictate which direction the train is going , If you are heading from LA to Seattle , For the most part it's going to be heading northbound LOL , And then vice aversa for heading back from Seattle to LA , Well thank you for responding your videos are done well, take care
@@dsanford12 Yes that is true, but Amtrak can turn the cars around so everything is the opposite so one day your roommate will be on the good side and then when the train reaches the final end they can switch the car around and then the roommate and would be on the wrong side. Lets say for example just making this up 2 3 4 5 are on the left side of the car and 6 7 8 and 9 are on the right side of the train- a couple days later the 6 7 8 and 9 are on the left side and 2 3 4 5 are on the right side.
That LA train station is so beautiful
Really a great looking one
@@GroundedLifeTravel for wine lounge do you need to reserve a spot before or can you purchase or up grade at the LA union Station?
Done it. Its a cool ride!
One of our favorites
Really happy I found your channel. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome!
The stations don't seem to have escalators, are there elevators for the handicapped..???
I bet many do have elevator and some have only lots of ramps to the platforms
7:12 Lucky! The first time I arrived there we stayed for four hours, and we were already running four hours late!
I stopped watching because of the annoying music.
Is there a way to select a left side roomette for the train going North, when making a reservation? I want to see the ocean from my window.
There is no guarantee because if the crew does not know which way the trains cars will be connected till they board the train that day. On full trip they can be connected front to back. When it hits the last stop they can turn the train car around so it would be connected back to front then.
My experience with taking amtrak has been not so good with schedule and mechanical failures and mix ups but they're have been some really good hard working folks that amtrak should be very proud of to have working for them.
Does everyone just go one way in sleeper train and then fly back later? I’m seriously curious about taking this trip but the logistics is what’s getting me. i live near SFO/SJC. 😅 so if i wanted to do the FULL thing would be going to LA then to seattle then back to bay area. Would it be worth it to do half a trip? 🤔
how much ??? I'm having trouble getting prices.
The Roomettes on this one run $500-$700 depending on a lot of factors
The train station was deluxe
Do you pay for your food?
In the cafe you do, if you have a sleeper, meals are included in the dining room
Can you tell me if this train has hairdryers in the bedrooms?
No, they do not
i took amtrak train from seattle to san diego in 2003 it was the best trip of my life.it was so beautiful, oregon and washington have the best scenic places
Apart from the track disruption in July 2021 near Mount Shasta due to fire, was the Coast Starlight otherwise affected by the wildfires? Thinking about a September 2022 trip and wondering if it is advisable.
It was affected by fire one of the bridges or tressles burned down but already fixed. Unless it happens again since some people are careless.
I liked this. It helped.
How did you book this, I can't find it
On their website just put in Los Angeles and Seattle as the stations and it will come up
Did you guys park in the overnight lot? What was your experience? I’m going on this trip tomorrow and I’ve been binge watching you guys!
i rode it from LA to Portland
Awesome!
Is breakfast, lunch and dinner included in the ticket you paid for?
Omg I want to do this.
When was this filmed? I took the starlight on October 21st
We took this trip in September.
@@GroundedLifeTravel Ah okay, thanks!
will you still get a nice scenic route seattle to la?
Yes, would be two great routes
too boring without your wonderful conversations.
About what time did you leave from LA?
looks so fun
That is something I'm just DEING to get to do someday!
You should go for it!
@@GroundedLifeTravel Yep. When I get the money.
Which side do you recommend sitting for better views? Thank you!
Northbound Left Side, Southbound Right Side. If you don’t like the side your sitting on, you can always go sit in the Lounge Car.
Is there no real diner on the Starlight?
There is now
Is the bathroom separate from the cabin?
Does it have wifi on the train?
Do you know the measurements of the room?
Thank you!
What editing software do you use?
Lol obviously none
Is the ride as smooth as it looks ?
It is a nice ride, but the camera is stabilized too!
AWESOME tour of the train!! Very helpful 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this intro. I think this would be a great family trip for us.
Perfect overnight for a family!
Had the opportunity last year to ride the CS, between Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA. Wasn't able to go roomette (too expensive for me), but I did ride in the business class car. Still a fantastic trip and the ocean views were amazing.
How was business class? We haven’t tried that one yet.
@@GroundedLifeTravel You get a few perks (mind you, this was pre-CoVid). Free bottle of water, $6 off coupon for either the dining car or the cafe car (used mine in the dining car), admittance to the Metropolitan Lounge (in both Portland & L.A.). The car was between the lounge car & the dining car, very handy. Seating was like in coach, but the material was different. And it wasn't too crowded (sat alone the entire trip).
That’s great! Good to know;-)
Is the first station sacramento? I'm heading to Davis from LA on this train! How much baggage can you take?
No it starts from LA Union Station and goes all the way to Seattle Washington.
@@chrisdobrowolski2783 I believe it actually starts in San Diego. Every time I get on the train at LA union station, heading north someone already has the window seat:/
@@brytanniparrett No its the Amtrak Surfliner goes from San Diego to LA union station I have only been on that train a few times it has no dinning or observation car but does has a cafe where you can purchase food and drinks and some novelities like playing cards.
@@chrisdobrowolski2783 Oh. I've only taken the coast starlight.
Are we allowed to bring any food onto the train?
Yes you can bring any food on to the train and non-alcholic beverages in coach car if you have a sleeper you are allowed to bring your own alcholic drinks tpp but then you have to provide your own glass/cup for it and drink it in the sleeper but the train attendent can provide the ice if needed.
How much cost the tickets?
A roomette is between $500-$1,000 for 2 people
The beginning is very slow and boring with no narrative of what we are seeing
Amtrak is so cool but could use an interior renovation. Japan's trains are so much nicer
I really enjoyed this!! Thank you!!
I’m thinking of doing this with a friend. Since there’s two bunks, how do the tickets work? Does my friend buy coach and then I buy sleeper ? But then we don’t have the same perks. Does that mean both of us have to pay $400 separately for the same roomette ?
When making the booking, you book for two passengers. You will be charged the roomette rate for one person, and then the base rate for the second person. You are both booked into the roomette, so you both get the perks. It ends up being $400 + $200 (approximately).
🆘 Yes Los Angeles is a hellhole, and the city knows it. Super Bowl LVI is slated to be held at the new SoFi Stadium, home of the Rams and Chargers, and the city needs to look pristine. Okay, maybe not that clean, but certainly not like a Somali refugee camp. The city, as with most areas along the Left Coast, has become HoBo haven. In Oregon, they're about to build these people brand-spankin' new shacks with accompanying community kitchen spaces and washing and drying machines. The homeless are being treated better than our veterans. I'm not a Dallas Cowboys fan, but their stadium in free Texas would have been a better venue than deep-blue and COVID-crazy California. Alas, that's not happening, so the city is ramping up efforts to remove the usual suspects from view. Most Democrat run big cities are lawless drug infested holes now.
Grandpa missed his meds again ^
Does this train has free Wifi....? we are 2 adults and a kid....is the kid going to seat with someone else....? because the way seats are setup....? if LA to Seattle is 1200 miles and train can go 125 mph. aren't they suppose to get there in 10 hours...? WHY 35 hours.....Thanks
Since it stops at stations along the way to drop off people and pick up people.
Dump the terrible music!
I felt like I was flying the whole time. The music sucks fyi.
GFY
