He has a distinctive voice and is very talented. However, I am concerned that if he doesn’t change the way he is producing his sounds, he will wind up with nodules or worse. Maybe he needs some time with a good voice teacher...hint, hint. 😉
I noticed he was starting to show signs of strain while promoting his last album. I hope he gets a teacher and an ENT just in case. I saw an interview years ago when he said he wants a teacher.
You’re being a bit unfair by judging his artistic choices as poor technique. Bruno has one of the most consistent voices around. He doesn’t fatigue and does tons of live shows, so he must know exactly what he’s doing. He’s been performing since he was a toddler, so you can’t judge him the same as musical theatre students who got into singing in high school.
He is just telling the truth, you're free of singing as you prefer, but bad technique is bad technique for Bruno Mars, for Michael Jackson, for Pavarotti or for the most mediocre singer. Although he's not saying he has a terrible technique or something, just that sometimes he push an excessive amount of air and that gives his personality, but also is not the most healthy way of singing
Tomás Alejandro Faúndez Aedo You need to understand what technique actually means. In non-classical music, technique refers to the process by which a singer achieves the maximum desired sound in the healthiest way possible, promoting vocal longevity. Bruno is over 30 and a smoker, yet his timbre has remained consistent . His range & agility have actually expanded since his debut. He never shows signs of fatigue despite seeming to “push” his voice to the extremes. Only good technique would allow that.
Whoa! "Unfair" is definitely a word I have NEVER heard said about Sam! 😳 You may disagree with what he has to say, he might even be wrong, but he is always fair! In fact, he is one of the most genuine and gracious people I've ever seen on RUclips! One of the reasons I began following him (despite not being a vocalist or having much need for his craft) was because he was so kind and nonjudgemental toward EVERY artist he analyzed. Even with the worst of the singers he's reviewed, he has always found something favorable and complimentary to say about each and every one. It may be hard hearing unfavorable opinions as a fan (though I don't think anything he said was particularly unfavorable myself), but calling Sam unfair for his professional analysis is, in itself, incredibly unfair!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A VOCAL TEACHER TO REACT TO BRUNO MARS AND IM SO HAPPY ITS YOU BC YOU ACTUALLY PROVIDE INTERESTING ANALYSIS AND UH I LOVE BRUNO MARS THANK YOU
The “roughness” and “Extra Work” is actually what makes his singing sound so good. The extra grit/distortion he has is *ONLY POSSIBLE* by straining his voice.
Gorilla...that's a hell of a performance...you can't teach that ! But what do I know? I just love Bruno, he gives me goosbupms, that's how I know he's a unique singer ! I'm hopeful! 😁
I am hopeful, too! Love Bruno's voice and passion, and I love how considerately you treat the topic - even with your expertise, you leave room for his individuality :-)
I have seen this amazing man in concert and he is absolutely stunning live!!!! Bruno Mars is truly an incredible singer, artist and human being..... Thanks Sam for this video
Almost all of these videos you reacted to were of a younger bruno. As Bruno has aged he has shown a lot more rasp and slightly deeper fuller voice. I think this strain that you see in a lot of his older videos is not nearly as common for him now.
Right, and some other commenters have also noted that not much newer performances of Bruno's was used. He has definitely gotten better overtime. This is also backed up by the fact that he was able to sustain singing a 1 hr show fully live for over 200 dates from his last concert without much strain.
Honestly, this channel is really great because there's no bantering, no drama, nothing, there's just Sam explaining and analysing stuff and he's really good at that. I suppose that's to be expected since he is a voice teacher, but not many people are this talented at explaining very specialised information to an audience of at least 80% people who know very little about the subject. He's so focused and professional and still expresses opinions and is fun. That's amazing.
He never said he had a bad technique, he's actually saying his technique is just out of this world, he somehow managed to make things most people can't and make them work in the long run, if he was using a bad technique you would already start hearing his voice getting worse by now, because he's been singing for a lot of years and he just keeps getting better instead of worse, that just proves he has a brilliant technique
He _is_ saying he has bad technique. Throughout his video he is cringing because of the technique, while simultaneously restating that Bruno can seemingly get away with it because of his high voice. His concerns have merit. If you are familiar with Steve Perry (also known as The Voice), you know that singing at this level is basically unsustainable. Also consider Arnel Pineda, another Filipino (he replaced Steve Perry), who might not be as strong fourteen years in. So Sam is cautioning that Bruno could see his voice degrade over time if he doesn't pay attention to how he is using it.
@@nealwright5630 His voice hasn't degrade as you can see in this video, and Sam is saying that somehow he managed to do that and not degrade his voice, because Bruno Marz has been arounf for more than 10 years and his voice is the same of not better, if he had bad technique he would already jacked his voice, if his gets even better over time like it does it just means he has a good technique
@@nealwright5630 It should be noted that this comp has a bunch of old clips. His modern stuff sounds a lot better in live performances and even in studio. I think he’s proven he has really good control of his voice

I never thought you could sing with distortion on your voice, coach Sam! I was surprised when you tried to mimic his voice at the song Locked Out of Heaven. I would live to hear you sing more with that voice character
I am hopeful. I think Bruno is pulling, over working his voice cause he wants to put that passion, drama, strength, emotion in there. He wants his audience to feel the song. He could sing it in a way that would be better for his voice in the long term but it might be nothing special and not Bruno? If that makes sense. This is just a guess, I know a handful of his songs and there’s no denying he has a great talent, I just think this is the “fingerprint” he chooses to put on his music. 🤷🏼♀️ Shorthand, I agree with you.
He has been singing since a little kid in front of audiences and he's 34 now, it's crazy to even question if his voice will stand. Prince pushes his voice way harder and he was hitting every note effortlessly on his last show.
As someone who sucks at singing but always songs along and tries to mimick a voice, my throat aaaalways hurts so bad when singing to bruno mars. I love his voice, and his live performances are one of the best I've been to. I'm hopeful ( 😉) he'll keep his sound and takes care of it..
I know nothing about singing and am terrible but it’s very fun to listen to the break downs by the RUclipsr Sam . I’ve watched all of them . I am hopeful that he makes another vid soon
I'm a speech-language pathologist and while what I do is very different from what a vocal coach does, there is a lot of overlap obviously in terms of the anatomy we work with and the issues we address. It's great to see someone on RUclips who really knows their stuff, Sam! I like the phrase "vocal capital" and I think that analysis is spot-on. Some people, for no obvious reason, have more or less to "spend". There seems to be at least a little bit of logic when you look at the whole picture (anatomy, lifestyle, environment, reflux and technique) but there is certainly a range within normal anatomy and that's not in our control; just like my knees might never go bad despite my terrible running form, some singers can just do absurd things with their voices and never pay the price that others do. That's why I always caution people against reading too far into technique when people are facing a vocal injury, e.g. the number of people with a suddenly critical opinion of Adele's style following her issues, and certainly with regards to imitating another singer's choices despite clear signs to say it's affecting you differently. There's more to vocal longevity than technique, and some of it just can't be explained except that there's just "more to spend".
Sam do you think Bruno Mars's voice sits as high as Stevie Wonder's voice and will Bruno's voice last as long as Stevie's has if Bruno doesn't improve his technique?
It is so good to watch how your channel grew! You have always been so honest and professional and it is really great to see more people are supporting you. ❤
Can you please analyse Christina Aguileras voice over the years with her not so healthy technique and whether it's sustainable or not. Personally I love what she does.
I am VERY hopeful that Bruno Mars can find a way to keep his tonal quality without straining his vocal chords. My first day watching your vids, Sam, and I'm quite impressed! Maybe some of your comments can help my voice become the best it can be.
can you make a similar video for michael jackson? i see more people in the comments wanting the same. i think its because he probably doesn't have the best techniques but sang really good
Hey Sam, never been this early had a serious question for you if you have time. I do notice with a lot of artist live but particularly Bruno Mars this one possibly "stylistic quirk" which may or may not be an issue maybe you could enlighten me. I'm an RMT in Canada so naturally very interesting in muscles, and I was just curious do you think its a problem that with exclusively high notes that Bruno Mars tilts his head to one side. He does it a lot in this clip with notes that he sounds like he is "reaching" for. ruclips.net/video/mIFqYkyYDAQ/видео.html .. Because to me, he's capping out his Scalenes, SCM and Upper traps turning his head fully to the right. All of those muscles are accessory breathing muscles which I would imaging make it harder to sing long term. Anyways sorry for the long comment im just never this early to a video and thought I would capitalize on your time :) Cheers, love your work.
I remember my choir director telling me not to do that once in high school. I'd turned my head but hadn't realized it. She said that wehn yuo do that, you're stretching your vocal cords.
Sam! After watching all your videos, I can really hear how much Bruno is straining in all of these clips. I agree that he’s an incredible performer, and I’ve definitely had to relearn my instrument a few times as it seems to change over time.
@@KajiVocals he may be a heavy smoker, but if you see all that tension, he's definitely not using proper technique
@@KajiVocals o.o
You’re being a bit unfair by judging his artistic choices as poor technique. Bruno has one of the most consistent voices around. He doesn’t fatigue and does tons of live shows, so he must know exactly what he’s doing. He’s been performing since he was a toddler, so you can’t judge him the same as musical theatre students who got into singing in high school.
DeshaunX thank you I love this
Fair
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A VOCAL TEACHER TO REACT TO BRUNO MARS AND IM SO HAPPY ITS YOU BC YOU ACTUALLY PROVIDE INTERESTING ANALYSIS AND UH I LOVE BRUNO MARS THANK YOU
Is Bruno a good singer?
NO
A REALLY REALLY VERY SUPER ULTRA GOOD SINGER FOR SHORT THE "BEST"
Danggg just checked the subscriber number, +500k?? this channel blew up fast, well deserved
The “roughness” and “Extra Work” is actually what makes his singing sound so good. The extra grit/distortion he has is *ONLY POSSIBLE* by straining his voice.
Its not sustainable though
There actually a way to get it without the strain
TheBlashMusic Actually the distortion isn’t what is causing the strain, it’s how he pulls up chest for really high notes.
He always sounds so consistent. I think he knows what he’s doing and will be fine.
In my opinion Bruno is one of the greatest ever musicians, up there with MJ and may other greats.
Can you react to a Tori Kelly best vocals or riffs/runs compilation please?
Yes omgg
He can hold a D5 natural in chest voice, a high tenor, so Bflat is not a hard note for him.
Loved the analysis! Learned a lot about his voice. Thanks for the video Sam ❤️
He’s singing the highest notes a person can go. You know it 100%. E6 sometimes f6 . Adele admitted even that she can’t do it.
Can you review Florence Welsch's best vocals?
"I am hopeful" you'll do this soon!
If you like Florence's voice, check out Simone Simmons and Epica. It's metal, but a very similar vocal sound.
Gorilla...that's a hell of a performance...you can't teach that ! But what do I know? I just love Bruno, he gives me goosbupms, that's how I know he's a unique singer ! I'm hopeful! 😁
Can you react to Michael Jackson live vocals please?
YES!
OMG YES PLEASE
@@andrewgarfield9898 I really hope he sees this!!!
yesss please
THANK YOU!! :)
He’s such an amazing performer ... just seeing him you get so immersed in him and the music ! Love seeing him sing live
Even the sponsor spot was interesting!
I'm trying to figure what I could use one of those mics for tbh lol
Almost all of these videos you reacted to were of a younger bruno. As Bruno has aged he has shown a lot more rasp and slightly deeper fuller voice. I think this strain that you see in a lot of his older videos is not nearly as common for him now.
Right, and some other commenters have also noted that not much newer performances of Bruno's was used. He has definitely gotten better overtime. This is also backed up by the fact that he was able to sustain singing a 1 hr show fully live for over 200 dates from his last concert without much strain.
I prefer Bruno Mars’ older songs. Great info on his voice. Thanks, Sam! Great job as usual! That color shirt is great for your eyes💙💙💙
Glad to see that you have sponsoring deals, you really deserve it! Your content is always gold!
please analyse bruno singing versace on the floor during bbma 2017 too!!
zeddws loh Yassss❣️
Honestly, this channel is really great because there's no bantering, no drama, nothing, there's just Sam explaining and analysing stuff and he's really good at that. I suppose that's to be expected since he is a voice teacher, but not many people are this talented at explaining very specialised information to an audience of at least 80% people who know very little about the subject. He's so focused and professional and still expresses opinions and is fun. That's amazing.
omg i’m living for this spicy title. i’d love to see you react to Mitski’s acapella version of Nobody!!!
or drunk walk home
Spicy? I think we already knew he was a good singer.
Hell yeah Mitski. I got introduced to her more industrial-ish music and was surprised to eventually come into her more laid back performances.
ii Marquise ii ii Marquise ii yeah but posing the question casts doubt.. it’s like click-baity. that’s all i meant!
He's technique is flawless
This Sam Johnson is a hack. He doesn't know Bruno at all, and he kept criticizing Bruno's technique. He should make a whole video why the Weeknd lost his voice.
React to Bruno Mars Carpool Karaoke with James Corden please!
I was going to mention that! I wonder if it helps to hear his regular talking voice to help make an observation on his singing. He's got a unique talking & singing voice, ie. you really know it's him. His voice really stands out as being different :)
Yes please!!!
he's not a good singer
he's ONE OF THE BEST SINGERS OF OUR GENERATION
The best*
@Mariah&WhitneyLamb he is the best male singer of our generation and it's a fact
@Mariah&WhitneyLamb yes he is still making music and he is working on a new album
@Mariah&WhitneyLamb I hope so btw sorry I replied late😂❤️
@Mariah&WhitneyLamb anyways how are you btw big fan of Whitney and mc

Dude I’m so happy your channel has grown so big, you honestly deserve it for the quality content you put out 👍
Hm, I know he used to smoke and may still be smoking? That could be why he has raspy qualities or has to strain. Just speculation.
Apparently he does cocaine too 😕
@@joannasaadati8810 this isn't uncommon for a world famous musician.
@@dmo530 That's what I was told 😕 sad. I mean if they need performance enhancing drugs why not use meds like Adderall to help their energy or focus. Would be safer.
@Jeffrey Kyle One is an unregulated street drug and the other a prescribed medication so ya I prefer people take the one that is safer.
@Jeffrey Kyle For a singer snorting coke is probably not very smart 🤷♀️
Yesterday , while I was watching your other videos I did searched if you did one for Bruno Mars and I just saw this today.. So happy! I love Bruno Mars and your comments. Thank you!
Can you react to Charlie Puth live singing too ??
I second that
I third that!
I fourth that
Yesss
he’s one of my favourite artists but he doesn’t sing live very often he lipsyncs so kuch
He has been singing since a little kid in front of audiences and he's 34 now, it's crazy to even question if his voice will stand. Prince pushes his voice way harder and he was hitting every note effortlessly on his last show.
OH yes! we getting coins! congrats on ur first sponsor!
Sam's been sponsored before, those headphones he's wearing came about that way ;) :) But, good to see more!
He reacted to older videos. He's improved a lot since.😅
Please watch some Michael Jackson!! "Evolution of Michael Jackson's voice" or something like that please! All the best!
YES
As someone who sucks at singing but always songs along and tries to mimick a voice, my throat aaaalways hurts so bad when singing to bruno mars. I love his voice, and his live performances are one of the best I've been to.
I'm hopeful ( 😉) he'll keep his sound and takes care of it..
You should consider taking ken trampling singing course instead of continuing to sound horrible. Save your voice.
please do one for the weeknd 🙏🏽
I’d love to see Sam analyse Janis Joplin sing Piece of My Heart or Cry Baby. Unearthly sounds!
Yes queen Bruno give us all of those strained vocals.
Dude I love you. You’re so professional. I can’t find many people like that on RUclips. You’re personality is just so respectable.
GET THAT PROMO SAM
Thanks lilo!x
I know nothing about singing and am terrible but it’s very fun to listen to the break downs by the RUclipsr Sam . I’ve watched all of them . I am hopeful that he makes another vid soon
Of course he is! 😭❤️
@Schizoid and I can understand the people that can't stand her voice.
I absolutely love your analysis style. You make things so much more interesting. You are truly compelling to watch. Thank you so much.
6:57 that scared the shit out of me Sam🥴. Didn’t know you could make that sound 💀🤣
I am VERY hopeful that Bruno Mars can find a way to keep his tonal quality without straining his vocal chords. My first day watching your vids, Sam, and I'm quite impressed! Maybe some of your comments can help my voice become the best it can be.
can you make a similar video for michael jackson? i see more people in the comments wanting the same.
i think its because he probably doesn't have the best techniques but sang really good
i think it is just because it's michael jackson lol
@@david6321 yea he sang in a really natural way with all the rhythmic singing he did etc
@@phee3D he singing live was a whole experience
I'd love to see an MJ video.
bruno has been in the industry for so long and has been killing those live vocals since day 1 so i think hes gonna be ok, he knows what hes doing
He does it a lot in this clip with notes that he sounds like he is "reaching" for. ruclips.net/video/mIFqYkyYDAQ/видео.html
@@AmyAndThePup very interesting thanks for the reply.
Sam! After watching all your videos, I can really hear how much Bruno is straining in all of these clips. I agree that he’s an incredible performer, and I’ve definitely had to relearn my instrument a few times as it seems to change over time. He’s getting away with some really sloppy technique because he’s in key and it sounds like the record, but ouch! These videos that you do are awesome, thx for spending your time and energy for all of us !!
You’re the best!

I barely discovered you a few weeks ago and I can say one of my favorite vocal critics on RUclips hands down. Keep It up man.
10 minutes and 48 seconds of Sam Johnson being in love with Bruno Mars
Would you mind doing an update to this?
including Silk Sonic... and some performances from his 24K Magic album... like 'Chunky' live in Japan... or the Leave the Door Open performances..
If he still smokes, he's in trouble. But so far, he still shows his vocal chops with Silk Sonic and doing the killer Little Richard tribute at the Grammys. I so hope we hear this exceptional artist for many more years to come, cuz Bruno knows how to lay it down!!
@Shashwat mishra I don't know. Two totally different styles I think. But Bruno is in that stratosphere for sure.
