There's an interview in which Nalbandian talks about this match (the show is called "En el set de Chela", or "In Chela's set", hosted by Juan Ignacio Chela, another ex ATP player from Argentina). When asked about this tournament, it went like this: Nalbandian - I defeated Federer and then El Aynaoui in the quarterfinals. But when the quarters match was about to finish, I had an abdominal tear. This didn't let me serve properly, but I managed to win that match. The next day I was in pain and I thought I wasn't going to be able to play the semis match, but I said to myself "alright, I'm gonna serve just putting the ball to play, always a second serve". I was trying not to force the serve because of the pain it caused me. So then I was like "just put the ball on the other side of the court and then let's see how the match goes". So, I started playing. Keep in mind that in this tournament I always felt great. We started playing and when the score was 4-3 or something like that, He (Roddick) served and the ball caused me an injury in my wrist (*the muscle is actually called "cubital posterior" in spanish, I don't know how to say that in english, sorry guys*) Chela - Because of the speed of his serve! N - Yes, but the ball bounced really high and I tried to hit a two hander (*in an awkward position*) when the ball hit me. I felt a terrible pain, and from then on I couldn't hit my two handed backhand properly. C - So you had to slice the ball. N - Yes, slice. 4-3 in the first set, I couldn't serve properly and I had to play a backhand slice most of the time. In these conditions, I found myself 2 sets to 0. C - Incredible. But if you had won the match, could you have played the finals? N - No, it was impossible for me to play the finals like this. Impossible. So in the third set we went to a tiebreak and I had a match point, but Roddick hit a tremendous serve to the body which I couldn't even return. Then there was a point, I can't recall if it was 6-5 o 6-6, in which the line judge called a ball out and I thought the point was over, so I just stopped the ball and started to prepare for the next point. But It turned out someone in the audience was the one who had screamed "out", it was not the line judge. It was kind of messy there, and I ended up losing the third set. Then the fourth and fifth set were impossible for me to play with a broken hand and abdominal pain. I knew if I lost the third set, then I wouldn't stand much of a chance to win the match.

@eoe123321 He would have easily won a few Wimbledons without Federer. He should have beat Fed in 2009. Had that easy volley to go up 2 sets to love. He played amazing that tournament. It's a mute argument though. Look how many French Opens Fed would have won without Rafa. Same thing with Australian and US Opens with Djokovic. The beauty of sports and rivalries.
@eoe123321 He could have won more had he stayed committed to his aggressive attacking game style that he showed in 03 and 04. As soon as he changed his FH to a more loopy and heavy top spin shot, he went from being a slam contender and winning big titles to a guy that could consistently stay in the top 10, but couldn't win the big tournaments.
Nalbandian screwed against Roddick, and against Isner (who was a bard sport in his case). Had both been fair, I'm sure Nalbandian would have won a major.
Y se hizo bien en poner ojo de halcon, hubo muchos partidos que los jueces de línea, y umpires, errores grotescos, y aquí el público también, le robaron este partido a David Nalbandian.
This was one match during his time with Brad Gilbert.. In general, he was up on the baseline most of the time, and he could overpower just about anyone, save for Fed, with the pace he could generate.
@eoe123321 They showed they hawkeye and the ball to break in the fifth set was out. He was also cheated at the end of the 3rd set when a fan called the ball out and the umpire didn't repeat the point.
I cringe when I watch Roddick, he was such a wasted talent. If only he had gotten it together mentally, he could have had such a longer career at the top.
He had it mentally. Unfortunately, he did irreparable damage to his career when he parted ways with Brad Gilbert, and allowed Dean Goldfine to change his FH motion. He had a flat penetrating FH that devolved into spinny topspin FH that would land short. He went from being a big-serving aggressive baseliner to a counterpuncher with a big serve.

he won a very close match, because Nalbandian was not strong enough in his head.
PS he almost lost this match
Beat the Wimledon finalists back to back and then lost the tournament to a guy the winner beat.
Not much of a handshake after a 5 set match. Bad blood match?
And the curse of American men's tennis begins...
Nalbandian screwed against Roddick, and against Isner (who was a bard sport in his case). Had both been fair, I'm sure Nalbandian would have won a major.
ナルバンディアンかわいそう(;´д`)
If there was hawkeye... davis might win.
Difícil ganarle a rodick
Nalbandian hand shake in the end lol...sore....
Roddick is so far behind the baseline. Can’t out hit anyone.
This was one match during his time with Brad Gilbert.. In general, he was up on the baseline most of the time, and he could overpower just about anyone, save for Fed, with the pace he could generate.
El robo mas grande que hubo en el us open ,david lo estaba paseando .....
Nalbandian got cheated bad by the american umpires
@eoe123321 They showed they hawkeye and the ball to break in the fifth set was out. He was also cheated at the end of the 3rd set when a fan called the ball out and the umpire didn't repeat the point.
nalbandian should've hit the ball in imo, jmo
I cringe when I watch Roddick, he was such a wasted talent. If only he had gotten it together mentally, he could have had such a longer career at the top.
He had it mentally. Unfortunately, he did irreparable damage to his career when he parted ways with Brad Gilbert, and allowed Dean Goldfine to change his FH motion. He had a flat penetrating FH that devolved into spinny topspin FH that would land short. He went from being a big-serving aggressive baseliner to a counterpuncher with a big serve.
Oh shut up about Henin the Hand.
Nalbandian should have won this match
Roddick is so unlikable
