Let the Record Show - the crate-dug interview series in which musicians, DJs, rappers, and producers discuss their favorite songs of all time as the tracks spin on vinyl - continues with its “Socially Distant Series” of video-conference episodes. Episode 49 features indie-rap-sensation-turned-funky-drummer J-Zone.
With the release of the fifth Du-Rites album A Funky Bad Time coming on November 13th, J-Zone joins hosts Mike Pizzo and Warren Peace to dig through some of his favorite tracks. Early 90s hip-hop deep cuts from Ice Cube, Terminator X, Schoolly D and Tim Dog show the clear influence seen in J’s early rap solo recordings on Old Maid Entertainment, while a selection of refined rare grooves from Kool & The Gang, Slave, and Jack DeJohnette exemplify his love for drumming as a part of The Du-Rites. In each case, oddball pressings and vinyl rarities are showcased for each song.
J-Zone’s appearance on Let the Record Show marks the 49th episode in the series and the fourteenth episode of Season 4. Guests on previous episodes this season have included Cut Copy, Blu & Exile, Sofi Tukker, The Free Nationals, R.A. The Rugged Man, RJD2, Little Brother, Cam O’bi, Dudley Perkins, YehMe2, Rittz, SNAILS and Malik.

one of my fondest hiphop related memories was when Tim Dog played at the Ocean Rooms in Brighton UK, there was no stage so he was pretty much in the crowd and most of his set cosisted of telling personal anecdotes of various dead rappers and then dropping one of their tunes. he did this for 2pac, Big L, Big Pun ect , being the annoying drunk i am i was shouting 'what about Easy E?' after each one, he just kept glaring at me but more people were joining my newly formed Eric Wright appreciation society until the whole 250+ crowd was chanting 'EASY E, EASY E, EASY E'. eventually he relented and said 'ok ok, even though we didn't get along back in the day, make some noise for Easy E' ,and then he promptly went into Fuck Compton and the place went mental

The way J describes Mark Adams with the scowl mid-slap 30:09-31:13 makes me totally understand his younger self wanting to get into the bass. I ain’t mad. Google the image on the back of Hardness of the World y’all

j-zone is one of the coolest muthafuckas on the planet. evertything he's done from old maid studd, slam columns, "root for the villain" book to his drummin & du-rites stuff has his own distinctive unique style. and he never followed trends, you have to respcedt him for all of that. his (and his fathers) obsession with tim dog always cracks me up. great episode guys.

J-Zone is very slept on. Just because he doesn't rap about how rich he is or how many cars he has and all that other nonsense, a lot of the hip hop community doesn't seem to vibe with him. I have been since way back. Keep doing you brother. You have plenty of fans!

Thanks for the love! I stopped rapping and making beats about 5 years ago. I've been working as a drummer for the last decade or so and have a funk band called The Du-Rites. There's a little bit about both at the end of this video. Thanks everyone for watching.
