I get pretty tired of playing Whac-A-Mole with children, as has occurred elsewhere on this page, so again, thanks for putting forth a friendly and reasonable intelligent argument. I submit, however that your Achilles heel is that _"...she went slow to choose her words"._ Assuming she was as you say coached and well prepared; as I believe she always is, then she would have expected this volatile point to come up, and would have already planned how she would respond; and not hesitated in the moment on camera, as she did. I submit that based upon the context of her rhetoric and considering the source _(herself),_ that it was a rare momentary lapse of reason, which I have never seen before with AOC, and would not expect. But it happens. She is human. We dunno what kind of day she had, my friend. She didn't need anyone to tell her how deep the support for Israel goes. She knows. Nor would she be inclined to minimize the point, other than to use a much better choice of words to maintain, as you suggest, diplomacy so as not to alienate the hard core IDF supporters, AND avoid derailing the interview in one swell foop. She is not among those who wish to justify or minimize what happened, and she has been pretty clear about that. The gist of my argument is supported by her entire history and its outspoken consistency, like Katie Porter; and just like Jamie Raskin, Senator Whitehouse, or Bernie...... she is always prepared, fearless, brilliant, and can cut MTG and Lowrent Boobhurt to ribbons before breakfast on her worst day. And I have never seen a hint of her playing the attractive woman card, which is why those on the right single her out, but not Katie Porter. But I digress. I further submit that if you are correct, that contradicts her entire history and consistently progressive clearly stated position. I believe her awareness of the potential rabbit hole on this point caused her to attempt to strike a balance between openly telling it like it is and doing what she did, which is totally drop the ball. I say it was a bit of brain freeze, and nothing more. Had she been blunt, which is necessary but not necessarily then and there... _(timing is everything....)._ If she had done it there it could have derailed the rest of the interview and dominated it, as well as alienated some she is actively trying to enlist in support, as you stated. Global power relationships shift slowly, much more slowly that I (and most of us) would like to see. But there is a shift in the wind, it seems to me. The Israeli state, and in particular Netanyahu, has demonstrated an unwillingness to exhibit and occupy a moral high ground. The U.S. has demonstrated its support for Israel, rhetorically and militarily. Now, it would be hard to argue a lack of U.S. support for Israel if it shifted its effective policy toward Israel by conditioning further foreign aid to Israel with requirements that it abide by international law and respect and protect human rights in the region. Excuse me, did Stephen actually say “the war between Israel and Gaza”? Even if it could reasonably be described as a war, the people of Gaza are not soldiers and they are not fighting in any war. Even Israeli propaganda tries to maintain the pretense that they are fighting Hamas. Instead of accusing AOC of using inflammatory language (actually she is just telling it how it is in plain terms) you should maybe choose your own words better.
Excuse me, but didn't Hamas--who claims to represent the Palestinians--attack Israel? And Israel defended themselves. I'm not a supporter of either side, but that sure sounds like a war to me.
I agree with the first part of your comment, but i don't think he was accusing her. I've seen many of his interviews and he does seem to engage a fair amount on Devil's Advocate phrasing, so the guest explains their reasoning to a general audience. Accidentally killed due to a series of errors that should not have happened. Not murdered
@@sdgdhpmbp _(Please forgive the pomposity of my verbosity in this lengthy reply.....)_
She is likely coached in regard to every public move she makes. However, before I rebut your comment, let me thank you for the first intelligent opinion _(with which I disagree)_ that puts forth that she was not in error, but rather, as you stated. I get pretty tired of playing Whac-A-Mole with children, as has occurred elsewhere on this page, so again, thanks for putting forth a friendly and reasonable intelligent argument.
I submit, however that your Achilles heel is that _"...she went slow to choose her words"._
Assuming she was as you say coached and well prepared; as I believe she always is, then she would have expected this volatile point to come up, and would have already planned how she would respond; and not hesitated in the moment on camera, as she did.
Sorry for the length of this reply. I could go on, but I trust you see my POV.

Brilliant young woman. Beautifully expressed. She’s the future of politics.

"Tremendous empathy" is useless without a matching action. Just more thoughts and prayers...empty and hollow.
Its hard to get anything done with the gridlock in congress.....
And backing that up. That could, it seems to me, have positive impacts in that region and also strengthen the U.S. morally and relationally in the eyes of the world.
I agree. Biden’s empathy, if it exists at all, is grossly overstated.

Very well chosen words but it is insane that it takes so long for a person of power in the country that supplies Israel with the weapons they use to take the lives of innocent children to choose them.
Is Hamas also innocent? How about the hostages still not released?
@@AL-lh2ht no one said Hamas was innocent. But tens of thousands of innocent people have been murdered by the IDF in retaliation. Are you one of those "it all started on Oct 7th" people? because it's been going on for many decades. I could show you a long list of all the times Israel forces massacred people.
On this issue, Biden showed his age. Those abstentions in Michigan woke him up!
@@carn9507 Do you also have a list of times that palestinian terrorists massacred Israel civilians before 10/7? A list of jews massacred by the arab living there in 19-th century? Because it is also a very long list going back not for decades, but for centuries. Those two lists should be kept closely to each other.
@@alexander_d1277 A few years ago, an Israeli filmmaker made an Oscar-nominated documentary about the Israeli domestic secret service Shin Bet. It was about defending against terrorist attacks and how the secret service eliminated opponents. What was most interesting, however, was that 5 former directors of this organization (all generals) reported from the inside and how they see the actions of their state. The film is called "The Gatekeepers". I strongly recommend watching this film to get a better sense of reality... European here btw...

I'd like to know what you would want your government to do if you were surrounded by neighbors who were actively trying to destroy your country and people for decades (with suicide bombings, car ramming, stabbings, mass shootings etc). I'd like to know what you would do and want your government to do if terrorists came into your home on October 7th and brutally raped your daughter in front of you, chopped off your son's limbs, and blew up your wife with grenade. You and so many others live in the comfort of your own homes judging others from afar and you have no idea what it's like to be surrounded by terrorists and under the constant threat of terrorism. You're just a hypocrite who hasn't spent much time learning about the history of Israel and the history of the region. Shameful! And the reason there's an "occupation" in the West Bank is because instead of living peacefully alongside Israelis, Palestinians in the West Bank have consistently chosen the path of terror and refuse to live in peace with Jewish Israelis. And the Palestinians/Palestinian leadership could have turned Gaza into a flourishing state, but instead chose to use billions of dollars of aid to create a terrorist state. She has hit the wall.
Thank you for this conversation!!!
She is such an effective politician, not many of them around
While I both like and respect AOC for her work and her determination, I'm neither thrilled nor impressed by her choice to using minimizing language in regards to the aid workers having 'passed away'. They were killed by IDF forces. They were MURDERED. And using minimizing language on an incident that was condemned by other members of the IDF, this is at odds with any goal that intends to hold accountable the people who did it. The action was a war crime, atop many other war crimes that the IDF under Netenyahu are committing during this extended invasion into Gaza, and we must never let them forget what has been done even as Israel serves as a constant reminded for the genocide prosecuted by the Nazis in the early-mid 20th century.
Have you considered that it was a momentary mistake? Consider everything else she has said over her entire career. She tells it like it is, and doesn't mince words. It is highly uncharacteristic for her, but if you look closely, you can see that she is human.
@@paradisepipeco I can appreciate a person making mistakes, but she actively stopped herself from using appropriate language, and used lesser equivocation in its place. That's what I disapprove of in this case.
@@morrigancollins2092 I didn't like it either. But we all have our moments. Having heard her speak often and with great power, especially when facing incontinent MAGA puppies like MTG, she is usually quick on the draw, brilliant, fearless, and knows her stuff.
Based upon her stellar consistency in that regard, putting her in a similar class as to effectiveness as Jamie Raskin and Katie Porter, I am confident that she was not pleased with her faux pax in retrospect either. So it appears you and I are in likely agreement with AOC in that regard.
You mentioned she hesitated, which was apparent. I would call it a stumble. But considering the volatile nature of the subject matter, I trust the obvious need for diplomacy was the reason.
None of us was happy with her poor choice of words. The difference is some of us are not projecting into it what isn't there
What I object to are people implying this was intentional spin rather than a _bungled_ attempt to be diplomatic, and to anyone who knows anything about her outspoken POV, that is myopic, unfair, and absurd. She is brilliant and articulate. Except this time.
Accepting the fact that it is not a perfect world and that she, like us, is human is not always easy. Thank you for your reply.
@@paradisepipeco And thank you for addressing me with respect and reason. I can see it being a faux pas, I really can, I've just always held her to a higher standard because, until now, she has BEEN the higher standard to which I hold everyone else I consider or vote for office. Which, on reflection, isn't fair of me- but we desperately need higher standards, now of all times, because of how much now hangs in the balance for all of us.
@@morrigancollins2092 I again appreciate your reply, and your courtesy, and especially for taking my frankness for what is, merely an opinion and open to discussion and debate.
Since my weakness is verbosity, I risk giving offense knowingly, as an attempt at brevity
It is rare on these pages to engage in such proper productive discourse, and a big problem in doing so beyond the obvious is the incessant A.I. filtering of appropriate comments.
Your initial point is well taken and well stated. From someone else, other than AOC with her usual consistency, I too would be suspect. We are in dire circumstances, as we all know, and we depend on her and those few like her to save this nation.
I think that perhaps sets up a tendency to react as many have when something like this occurs with someone like her considering how much we rely upon our few real champions.
Again, thank you for your adherence to proper decorum and open minded POV. This usual fare of Whac-A-Mole does get tiresome, but to leave it unaddressed is often difficult for me. Thanks for making my day with your reply, which transcends the issue, for me.

Not the first person, Bernie Sanders is fighting for peace since the start.
WCK workers did “pass away,” but a weird choice of words for “were murdered.” Also says a lot that only when 7 European folks got merked (death toll of Palestinians somewhere in the 33k range) did any of y’all started smelling the bull$hit.
Unfortunately, that is what it takes to bring it home.
Yes, I don't see this as BS so much as a recognition that coalition- and movement-building involves creating relationships with people who don't always see eye-to-eye on everything. Still speaking truth, but in ways that invite respectful dialog, curiosity, and creativity without always having to be "right" (which involves some level of making others "wrong" - not a great relationship-building strategy).
Ryanfromdeland, don't assume the le el of empathy out in society by watching media. Millions of people have watched in horror and sadness (helplessly unfortunately) since day one. We don't all have the ear of Stephen Colbert. Regular people following this have cared since the beginning. And way to go, Colbert, for not even remotely agreeing or disagreeing. Master class on how to plausibly deny complicity in genocide.
Personally, I generally like it when an interviewer just asks questions and lets the person talk w/o the interviewer inserting their own opinion (not the job of an interviewer, as I see it - I think it's about giving the audience a chance to learn how the interviewee sees things - the monologue (and the overall show) is Colbert's chance).
Good point. We have too much biased mainstream media for manipulation, to keep people blind.
@DanielBarberMusic he's ignored the human cost of Israel's collective punishment for most of the last six months. He doesn't hold back his opinion on any of the other issues that he covers.
I mean he was the one to use the term asymetrical war
I agree with the comment above, this is just an interview style. The Devils advocate. It was in no way meant to be inflammatory.
