  • The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.

This telecast was unique in that Chris Economaki _was not_ in the pit area to interview the race winner, it was Bill Fleming, instead.
This was one of those Wide World of Sports races where film camera crews covered the race, with Bill Fleming doing the intros, wraparound, and interviews. Then the film was sent to New York's ABC-TV's facilities for processing and editing, with a script prepared and Bill Fleming did the voice-over narration of the race to the film, which was telecasted the following Saturday. That explains how Fleming went from being a trackside announcer to immediately interviewing the race winner.

I'm aware of ESPN doing telecasts of races at Riverside in the 1980s; as around the year 2000 at Christmas time, with ESPN doing reruns of past NASCAR Cup races to fill the broadcast day, with one of them a stock car race at Riverside in the 1980s.
But, in the 1960s into the '70s, when it came to the NASCAR event in January, that would be a rarity, and from a film maker, not ABC Wide World of Sports.
The only Riverside events ABC Wide World of Sports did were the Can Am and Indy Car races in the late 1960s.

IIRC CBS did the 1976 400 mile race at Riverside with the footage edited for its Sports Spectacular program. This telecast was noteworthy in that one of the announcers was MRN radio icon Barney Hall. It would be his only try at television.
