I was so young when John Lennon was killed by a stalker here in NYC! John Lennon didn't even have security around him and would just walk around NYC and would always talk to his fans. I was so upset, even as a kid loved his music. Now living in NYC, it means even more...the tributes to him in Central Park with "Imagine" spelled out so beautifully and Strawberry Fields, etc. This song and Imagine were always my favorites. RIP John Lennon, always wonder all you would have created if your life wasn't cut so short.

David Chapman even admitted how kind he was as John Lennon always made it a point to speak to his fans who waited so long outside The Dakota (his apt bldg in NYC) for him. Its beyond horrific how he then murdered him when he returned home. John Lennon's kindness and appreciation for his fans showed what great character he had and so sad how this deranged man still killed him.

Lennon wrote this song as an ode to his wife Yoko Ono. He regarded it as the most Beatles-like track on his Double Fantasy album and he called it the '80s update of "Girl," which is a track on Rubber Soul.
Speaking with Rolling Stone just days before his death, Lennon said: "'Woman' came about because, one sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me what women do for us. Not just what my Yoko does for me, although I was thinking in those personal terms... but any truth is universal. What dawned on me was everything I was taking for granted. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. It's a 'we' or it ain't anything."
In many ways, this song is Lennon's apology to Yoko. In 1973, the couple was having problems in their marriage, so Yoko agreed to put their relationship on hold and let John sow his oats. He did, taking up with his assistant May Pang and engaging in some unruly behavior. Lennon referred to this time as his "Lost Weekend" - it lasted about 18 months.
This was released as a single in January 1981, about a month after Lennon was murdered.
In the UK, this replaced Lennon's "Imagine" at #1, which had been reissued following Lennon's death. This was the first time an artist replaced himself at UK #1 since The Beatles did it in 1963 with "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
This is the only song title for which Lennon and McCartney wrote separate songs. In 1966 McCartney wrote a song of the same title for Peter & Gordon using the pseudonym Bernard Webb.
The word "woman" begins each verse, but doesn't show up in the chorus, which is just "Ooh, Oooh Oooh, well, well, do do do do."

Not to take away from the song, it’s one of my favorites besides Watching the Wheels, but Lennon was with May Ping which Yoko Ono herself arraigned. She was Yoko’s personal secretary. That way she knew who he was sleeping with during that “lost weekend “

    • @hackapump
      @hackapump 2 года назад +5

@@joannathornock8037 I’m no Yoko hater, but it's true the ”Lost Weekend” narrative depends on who you ask. Yoko’s official story about what happened is not corroborated by anyone else who was there. According to most people she threw him out, after making sure that her assistant, May Pang, would accompany him. What followed was a legit relationship between John and May, only briefly dominated by him partying like crazy in L.A. After he sobered up, the two of them had a very ordinary home life together for quite some time. (May has written a book about it). If John did wrong by anyone, it was by May, whom he abruptly left when Yoko wanted him back.
I think it’s only reasonable to regard John & Yoko as the first ”influencer couple”, two people who cultivated their mutual brand with vigour and quite a bit of spin. Doesn’t make them bad people by any means, it’s just a reminder to not believe everything they ever said.
EDIT: I'm sure John had plenty of other things to apologise to Yoko for. The "lost weekend" wasn't one of them though.

I’m 46 years old. This song is my FIRST musical memory. I did the math, I had to be 5 or 6 because this song came out in 1981. I was walking through my grandmas bedroom and it was playing on her clock radio on the dresser. I remember stopping and staring at the radio, listening. I started to cry a little bit. My aunt asked me what was wrong. I told her I missed my friend. I distinctly remember thinking about a little girl in my preschool class. No clue why all those things came together other than to say, music man…to this day I’m very emotional, always have been, I cry easily. Seems like it all started with this damn song.

John Lennon said that 'Woman' was the grown-up version of the Beatles song 'Girl.' I listened to both songs after reading that, and I get what he's saying. 'Girl' is a young man's fantasy about having a cool girlfriend who looks good, but the song's entire emotional content is about how he thinks this imaginary dream girl would make him feel. 'Woman,' on the other hand, is about the reality of being in a relationship with a woman who made his life complete. He said that's why he whispers "the other half of the sky" in the song's intro, because the realization of how much he loved Yoko was like discovering for the first time that there's a night sky to complement the day.

Paul had more of a relationship with little Julian (who was born in 1963) than his father John did. John admits that he barely knew his son during the Beatles, before he met Yoko. It was nice that Paul had a sort of uncle relationship with Julian. I have seen more photos of Paul walking along with little Julian and either holding him in his arms or Julian's hand while walking, than I have seen of John doing the same thing. I love John too, but I just feel so sad that he couldn't have given Julian at least a 1/4 of the love and attention he gave to Sean. Thankfully Julian and Sean have a close relationship with each other now.

It was very weird, because John's father abandoned him when he was 5, then John abandoned Julian when he was five (when he left Cynthia for Yoko) and then John was murdered when Sean, his son with Yoko, was 5 years old. Julian never married or had kids because of what happened to him and basically not really knowing his dad. Julian and John were just starting to FINALLY build a relationship when John was murdered.

It showed a photo of "John Lennon and his accused killer", then showed the Dakota where he was shot, followed by the back of the Imagine album cover of him laying down, and finally a picture of his dead face in the morgue. This is my absolute favorite John Lennon song. It’s such a beautiful tribute to the love of his life. This song is also very bittersweet because as the 1980’s began, John finally seemed happier than he had ever been. He had sowed his wild oats and seemed ready to settle down and get back in the groove of things. Then, tragically he was murdered. This was released shortly after his death and it still brings back sad memories even now because of that, but it’s such a beautiful song. Another song John Lennon wrote during this same time was “Grow Old With Me”. Mary-Chapin Carpenter had the most beautiful version of that song, and it will literally give you chills. Definitely one to put on your list of songs to react to down the road. ❤

This song was a remorseful apology to Yoko for his well-known indiscretions that severely interrupted their relationship for a time. From the same album, you should hear his songs for his fans and friends, Starting Over and Watching the Wheels. The first one was his comeback song and was zooming up the charts as we celebrated his return to the music world when we lost him. It breaks my heart every time I hear it. But if you want to hear his sense of humor, listen to The Ballad of John and Yoko, with help from Paul.

Lennon was in my opinion the greatest popular songwriter when it came to songs being an extension of his own emotional life. He saw music as a way of expressing his inner world and as much as I love McCartney and think that when it comes to the craft of songwriting Paul has no equal, John for me remains the greatest of them all. A true artist that made honesty and authenticity essential to his craft.

I was blessed to have seen them live on the Ed Sullivan show. The Beatles shaped everything good or bad about the world we live in today. Think of that, art music, culture, revolution...the youth movement didn't just start it started in 1963 with four legends. John Lennon was the greatest of all and his death shook the world as hard or harder than his life. Every musician today in one way or another owes their career to them. The world hated Yoko for breaking up the band, but it was destiny. She was a hard as tacks lady and John loved her like a new puppy! I pray the world never forgets the history and how the fab four moved the earth.

In an interview for Rolling Stone magazine on 5 December 1980, three days before his murder, John Lennon said that the song "came about because, one sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me what women do for us. Not just what my Yoko does for me, although I was thinking in those personal terms ... but any truth is universal. What dawned on me was everything I was taking for granted. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. It's a 'we' or it ain't anything." He had just emerged from a self-imposed sabbatical, and it was with high anticipation that he produced "Double Fantasy" and it blew up, and John was back to the top of the charts. Just as we were settling in to enjoy his new music, the world was robbed of his talent and humanity. Every song released for the next few years by John Lennon reminded us of that awful day. So he stuck a song by her in between each of his own amazing songs because he loved her so much he was willing to force her onto you. So, listening to this album went as such; lay back chill THEN jump to your feet in terror and move that needle! Then Ohh yeah jam to this smooth groove THEN cover your ears before they bleed as you move that needle! Then Well isn’t this the prettiest song you’ve ever heard THEN take cover, the dogs are crying, move that needle! Careful! Don’t scratch his songs just hers!!!! And so on.

Yes, it was recorded in December 1965. Paul used a pseudonym "BERNARD WEBB" as the composer under the "WOMAN" title on the record label. He wanted to see if it would become a hit, with that name on the record. With so many Lennon and McCartney songs becoming instant hits during that time, he started to wonder if it was just the Lennon-McCartney name that made them hits, and not the songs that were causing them to be a hit. We fans didn't find out till a few years later that it was written by Paul. However, many of us, including me, already had suspicions that it might be Paul or a Lennon-McCartney song as it sounded like something they would have written. Also the fact that no one had ever heard of this "Bernard Webb" !

Actually Jody, all men once revered and respected women and the beauty and Love only they can bring to their Life. The thing is however that our women no longer bring anything like that into a man's Life. Certainly nothing that adds value of any kind to a man's Life any longer. If you're honest with yourselves and with each other I think that you'll be able to see that men have held up their end of the bargain, it is women that have failed to live up to their part of the bargain. I bet almost any amount of money, that most men would welcome the ability to once again be Friends and Lovers again with women. However, this time it is you women that need to straighten up. No, you can't blame this one on men. Just look in the mirror... there she is. The almost Useless, Self Important, Narcissistic, Man Hating, Insufferable Parasites that know nothing of the value that taking on Personal Responsibility might add meaning to their lives or know nothing of the value that having a Moral Compass might add to their lives. I'm not trying to be cruel here, but you girls have really made a mess of things and it's going to be a long, long way back to being Civilized once again. If you're willing to truly put some effort into making the changes necessary to tip the scales back to equal, men would be willing to go to Hell & Back to help you do this. But if you're just wanting for us to make these changes for you, well, you all can go to Hell by yourselves. We're waiting to see some action on your part, women. Should we hold our breath? I'm sorry for the Truth Bomb... a little. Later girls...

Probably the best tribute song for John. You'd think one of the Beatles could have done a decent song for him, but it was his friend Elton who did it right.

Yes, this is a great song! Four years ago, a dear, lifelong friend of mine by the name of John passed suddenly. Empty Garden has been personal since. Crushing, but beautiful.

Oh no! I haven't heard this song since it came out! The "Double Fantasy Album came out in November of 1980 and the following month that same year John Lennon was shot dead! It would just make me cry when I would hear this song afterwards! I was 15 and it was heartbreaking to me at the time. 40 plus years later it is still a beautiful song to me; he wrote this song inspired by his wife Yoko Ono! Enjoyed your reaction! ☮💕

Even after 40 years after his death , I find his last album hard to listen to. It really gets to me.

I feel you. It was 4 days after my 19th birthday my dad came and woke me up at like 4am (UK). I thought I was dreaming but awoke with a feeling of dread that something bad had happened but still half asleep. As I came downstairs "Imagine" was playing and my mum was crying in the kitchen. Then the dots connected and I became unglued. He would have been 82 on 9th October; imagine that. I feel the same sick shock and unreality of it all still. I never use the murderer's name as that's what he wanted, to have his name for ever linked to John's. I call him assassin, killer or murderous bastard, they serve him just as well.
What a waste of a talented life.

I have a very hard time listening to any music off this album as it takes me right back to the time of his death. I was 13 and just really becoming a fan then boom John Lennon was murdered in December and in January my father died at 46 of a heart attack. Music is how I coped and I find it difficult still so many years later to listen to some of the music from that time. As an adult these many years later it also brings up great sorrow for Yoko. She had her husband and lover murdered in front of her and the majority of the public disregarded her trauma and pain.

I remember this time very accurately because as a mobile DJ in the late 1970’s early 80’s I had just returned from the local record store to buy this album “Double Fantasy” when as I was listening to it the news came over the radio that John had been killed.
