    My husband makes the log feeder also and we have the best collection of woodpeckers around. Nuthatches and finches as well as other small songbirds like it too but unfortunately so do Starlings. I didn't make suet for a while and the Starlings left (yay!)
    We don't have perches so only birds who cling to bark can use it. The platform feeders we have are squirrels feeders too. We gift the log suet feeders to friends and family but I find most aren't willing to put up with the mess. We add sunflower hearts and mealworms to our mix. It gets expensive but the birlds love it❤

    Not sure what it is, but I could watch this dude tinker in his shed all day. Great vid man.
    I noticed some comments about the peanut butter, salt, blablabla....totally correct. The salt is bad. The solution is super simple. Buy peanuts and make peanut butter. Just blend them buggers till they're peanut butter. Seriously.
    Cool bird houses bro! Gonna go check out some more of your vids! 👍🏻

      Hello Alex C
      Thank you for watching and the comment.
      That is an Awesome Idea! Here in the mountains of Calif I get some med size pine cones
      and tie a small string to the top then fill them with the suet after i will roll them in non salted nuts
      and the grand daughters will hang them up. the birds love them also.

    One thing the sand does is helps them digest their food. They have a craw & a craw requires sand to grind their food up. They have to have sand/dirt & wild birds have plenty around, but that is a nice thing to put it in their food also. I was wondering if bacon grease has a lot of salt in it. You probably already know if you melt the grease & peanut butter in a sauce pan & pour over the dry goods it's easier. If you prefer doing it dry I apologize, I was just saying. LOL Judie

    • @mtngrammy6953
      @mtngrammy6953 3 года назад

      You are right, Judy, Judy, Judy. The bacon fat is NOT good for the birds because of the salt AND nitrates, etc. Most peanut butter also has salt and other bad additives, so use natural peanut butter or simply unsalted chopped up peanuts.

      I use an old crock pot and melt the peanut butter and lard. Then mix seed.

    Please, do not use bacon lard. The preservatives are bad for people and birds. Otherwise, excellent eats for birdies :)

      Hello - Would coconut oil or regular lard be a good substitute for the bacon lard ? thanks.

  • @carlericpickett597

    Coconut oil is great and healthy for the birds. Rendered beef fat also.

      I find the coconut oil melts the suets in our summer drought…so when I do use coconut oil I use it during our cool season weather.

OMG your things you have built are so unique & nice, I'm going to make some too!!!! So creative you are!! Now I see why you make your suet dry!!! I'm sorry I jumped the gun, if I don't make my comments when I see the thing I want to comment on, I forget (old age you know) What do you use to drill those big holes? Thanks for showing us!!!! Hello Pat Farina. I thought I would ask if you could share the homemade Recipe that you use? I really do not care for the suet's that are in the markets because, I have try them and my birds just do not seem to try a likening to it. Waste of Money just my opinion! I am always looking for new Recipes, I spend alot of time feeds my birds. I also make Feeders/ Houses from natural items Logs that are dead and down and many other things I need to do videos on them it just that it is winter time here and I only make them in the early spring so if you are interested please stay tuned in a few months I will do some video on how I make them. Wrote all the recipes down! I’m off to buy the ingredients! I’ll just grind up my peanuts in my Ninja. Fresh peanut butter! Question: how do you keep the squirrels from taking over the feeders?

  • @donnagibbs485
    @donnagibbs485 7 лет назад

    I read that peanut butter is not good for birds because of the salt contents.

  • @shesablue4243

    what do you do bout squirrels and your feeders?

    • @HillBillyDesigns
      @HillBillyDesigns  6 лет назад

      Hello Jeanne Carney Most of my feeders I hang from a wire that makes it harder for the squirrels to get to, were I live we use to have a lot of squirrels but about 5 or 6 years ago something happen not sure what it was sicken plaque not sure. so I pull a strong wire from one tree to another then hang the feeder from the wire make sure it is high enough so people can not get hurt, I still get a bear or Raccoons ever now and then that will break the wire or help them self. I am hoping to make more videos in the spring of how I make the feeders, and houses, thank you for inquiring about the feeders. Hillbilly
