I use VSX and I'm making the best mixes I've ever done.
If most music is listened to on consumer headphones, then why should music producers not mix with those kind of headphones?
Something over 50% of people listen on smartphone, on various different earbuds etc. The next highest device is a Smart TV, which has a very different charactor. Laptops and computers also rank highly.
Given the range of characteristics, we need to be able hear a range of frequencies well. Consumer headphones will only give you a glimpse of how the music will be experienced by some people.
Having said that, apart from checking on studio headphones and monitors, I DO actually do checks with some earbuds etc.
Because concerts and live music sound better, and those are the experiences that really stick with you.

AKG K240 is a dependable work horse. $2000 come on.
My question might be dumb : why bother hearing things in your mix with your expensive headphones that litterally nobody else can with their own listening devices ?
I have used AKG K240 headphone for over 45 years and have made hundreds of good mixes with them. My last pair cost me $60!

@@CreativeSauce Basically, there are a dozen different brands of synths, and they all have their own design language, and even tones (imagine that, instruments sounding different from each other, so unusual compared to electric guitars). Naturally, you gotta catch 'em all, like Pokemon.
