Well, that car probably made him realise that he can do better than a bland Austin. As he said that what his dad could afford at that time. The car maybe boring or not to his standards, but it did the job. Well done to Hammond dad
Unpopular opinion here, but I think the Austin Allegro is not horrible looking at all, it clearly has character while cars of today get there looks from just shiny bits glued to the body.
i never saw an Allegro in real in my life... but i am on the continent and lived close to the main VW factory... i saw all types of VW, Ford, BMW, Mercedes, Fiat, Alfa, Saab, Volvo, DAF, Porsche, Opel, Renault, Peugot, Lada and 2 Rover SD1... but never an Allegro....i barley can remember the Morris 1100/1300 i saw once in 1975... i saw more Alfasud then UK build cars! and the Alfasud been a pretty car with many faults...
It looks fine indeed, but then you find out it has the most horrid crankshaft design you'll ever find in a car. There are a lot of other faults with it but basically put, it's a terrible car.
Nice to look at, I'll agree... but not to own and drive. A lot of British leyland era cars (which the Allegro is) were extremely iffy when it came to their quality. Mechanical problems were rife and so were other issues like door panels literally falling off!!
They're not that bad visually, but internally? Wooo boy, that's a big can of worms.. British Leyland era cars were famous for being utterly horrible mechanically and the one of the biggest representations for Britain's decline so to say.
The 1970s "flat front with panels" look is definitely the more common semi-detached home but there's still plenty of these 50s style ones with the bow windows though.
My father owned one car in his life, it was older than me, and he sold it when I was about five because he couldn't justify the expense anymore. Hearing people complaining about the choice of new car their father bought strikes very hollow. Owning a car at all is fortunate, buying a brand new one is a dream that I will probably never fulfill.
Such a dick to do that to a decent car. The Allegro 1500 HLS restate was a fantastic design many competitor's had 3 door estates and this beat Vauxhall and Ford. Its just a sick stunt.
