the accusation of "cultural appropriation" like they not allowed to do hip hop cause they are asian, are hilarious cause if they knew the history of hip hop they will knew how much asian culture(chinese ans japanese culture) played a major role at shaping hip hop:
- breakdance moves are lifted from kung fu movies of bruce lee and shaw brothers/golden harvest movie.
-rap and dance battle are directly influenced by kung fu movies too
- all rap songs use 808 drums invented by roland ,a japanese company (same country as xg).
You know how people are man - they don't care about all that and just want to sit behind their screens haha. You didn't stutter though - big facts. The thing is too that they put respect on the culture and haven't been problematic. They just talk about the things that they feel are important, just like any other art form.
I mean, rap for example is poetry at the end of the day in it's most pure form, and TONS of cultures / peoples have participated in and shaped that art form. As long as there's respect in it and people aren't problematic there's no issues imo.
Some people will just hate because they're miserable though and we shut that out haha.
what up. i'm corean. from NYC. and in the home of hip hop 99% ppl don't press me about the way i am or speak or dress etc. they know what time it is. Asians have been at the park jams since the beginning when hip hop was being created. And everybody was obsessed w asian culture at the time. One of the main gang members that set off the creation of hip hop is named "Karate Joe".
it seems ppl that got the least credentials to speak on hip hop got the most to say on it. they think how hip hop got to their small town is how it actually is in the birthplace.

Seems like you're not a huge Jay-Z fan so that's probably why you felt like a lot of the bars were going over your head. Like 99% of this song is Jay-Z references.
First off Dirt Off Your Shoulder is a Jay-Z track, this is a Jay-Z beat (well he didn't make the beat but you know what I mean) and one of his most iconic. The chorus is almost directly duplicating the chorus in the original Jay-Z track and switching just a couple of words.
99 Problems is another Jay-Z track
Jay-Z says "I came, I saw I conquered" - on his song - Encore - which she references right after this bar.
"Best rapper alive" cooould be another reference because there's a pretty iconic repeating voiceline in the original track which is just Jay-Z saying "Best Rapper Alive" I may be reaching there though.
La Familia - this is both a song and album - The Dynasty: Roc La Familia is Jay-Z's fifth album and also the name of a track on his album Magna Carta
Empire State of Mind - another Jay-Z track
Also the "like a rock fell out the sky" - especially with the cadence around "rock fell" is clearly referencing Jay-Z's record label Rocafella Records
The Gift and The Curse is the subtitle to Jay-Z's album The Blueprint 2 - and she says Blueprint in the next bar, so kind of referencing both The Blueprint and The Blueprint 2: The Gift and The Curse
C to the Izzo N to the Izzay is a crystal clear shout out to Big Pimpin', a Jay-Z track where the chorus is "H to the Izzo, V to the Izzay" - referencing his nickname "J-HOVA (pronounced Jay Ho Va like Jehova, i.e. God)
So if you *are* a Jay-Z fan and you're listening to this track the wordplay is absolutely BANANAS. First off, I never see anyone use this beat. This is Jay's beat. It is one of his most iconic and recognizable songs. Just to use this beat at all took insane guts. Coco killed it though. Her flow is impeccable and all the shout-outs and references to Jay come from place of clear respect and admiration for a Hip-Hop legend. She absolutely bodied this. Both the crazy talent just oozing off every word and the respect for the culture and history. This is why I love Cocona. Tall order for Jurin tomorrow to try to top this one if I'm being honest but we all know Jurin is no slouch either.
Thanks for all of this man! Yeah definitely not a big fan of him at all haha. I'm well familiar with 99 Problems, Empire State Of Mind and The Blueprint 2 (I've listened to it twice I think?) but yeah everything else was lost on me haha. I still love how though she's referencing so much of Jay's discography that she's able to put together something that still has meaning in and of itself and sounds dope as is. It's sooo sick.

@LKTVLKTV For sure, it's insane how many references she squeezed into a one minute and 30 second song. It's basically just a single verse. To have so many Jay-Z referenced and still have the song make sense contextually and reference herself and XG at the same time, super impressive.

as i have always said Cultural appropriation is a non existent thing in todays society, anyone who says that you immediately know they have no idea what they are talking about, given everything is out there for all to see and hear, there is no such thing as this belongs to one culture or another, it comes down to anything that is popular today whether it be style, music, fashion ... it would not be if it were not exposed for all to hear and see, the only thing these haters comments do is prove just how much of a loser/waste of skin these writers/narrators really are which also applies to all haters regardless of what they are hating on, prove your worth and haters are worthless
This is a tough beat to flow over, it's not you. You have to be disciplined in syllable placement to make sure you don't over shoot the bar at the start and end of each bar.
XG fans probably missed like 80% of the references
