They started eating the moldy bread on day 3 or 4 I think? So then the effects of the mold would likely start on day 5 or so. They also mention other types of mold and fungi numerous times at the beginning so I wonder if that’s meant to hint at the mold playing a big part in their descent to madness.

Given the circumstances (ukranian refugees fleeing from severe famine, hints of deeply rooted psychological issues leading to borderline psychosis, and potentially tripping balls on hallucinogenic mold in spoiled food/ the air) I'd say it's not entirely impossible that they could drop to that level so quickly. You're only ever three meals away from complete and utter anarchy after all. We are capable of unspeakable things given the right motivation, and hunger is one hell of a motivator.
The longest I've gone without food before was for a 3-day fast. Yeah it sucked but you won't rly die from it. People often do long water-fasts and you can often prolong your fast if you make sure to maintain your salt levels.
As a slav, I found it interesting how this game makes a lot of references to slavic folk lore and fairy tales: in many of them the villain tries to eat a child or someone else by baking them in the oven. So basically they act nice and then make you sit on a shovel (which they use to actually put you into the oven)
The thing I recognized was someone throwing down some cloth that became a pit to hell. I know I read a story where a girl running from a witch threw down a mirror that became a lake, and a comb that became a forest. I wonder where the blacksmith story comes from....

As much as I think this game is about the protagonist suffering trauma by having a severe PTSD moment of seeing his friends die and them eating them (thus seeing themselves as a Baba Yaga/monster/cannibal), the story teller in my brain goes back to Potato who said at the beginning “Cabbage forced me into this cabinet, this is basically kidnapping”. Seeing how the group constantly went out without you, you being forced to stay at the cabin, Karin’s constantly ribbing at you (ignoring her relationship events), I hesitantly propose that for some reason Karin/the group kidnapped you, hiding out in the woods and then accidentally getting caught in the floods. This could explain why all the “kind/soft” dialogue in the first few days seemed so cold and stilted: it’s heard from a victim’s perspective. Your captors’ words would aways sound creepy or scary no matter how cheerful they try to make it sound.
I also suspect Potato's words have some weight. I figured it meant the MC was there against their will for some reason or another. Maybe they got pressured into coming with the group or something because of dire circumstances.
it sounds like the 4 friends fled from Ukraine because of starvation and other reasons. So that might be a factor as to why they're here, trying to survive off so very little.
I speculate the chompettes have some sort of representation for the members we see. You can kinda make out that Mariah is trying to tell the truth about the situation, like potato who is also trying to tell something

I guess the "chicken" bone MC found under the floorboard could have been the Squirrel's. Maybe Anatoly, completely out of his mind due to his hunger, snapped and ended up eating him, or Karin ate his pet while he was asleep (after all she had a knife with her) and also maybe that was one of the main reasons which drove him to rather drown himself; Anatoly did say that he couldn't bear to continue with Karin tormenting him overall and also the possibility that Karin could kill him in his sleep and eat him next
Have you noticed how the main characters treat each other? Although according to the story they are friends, they do not support each other, discounting the difficulties on others. Anatoly and Gregor seem good, but only while talking - they also didn't help each other or the others once. Of all the company, it seems, only Maria had something truly good in her. Update: I have theory that they all act like this because this is protagonist's attempt to justify himself. Like "oh look they were so bad I did a good thing killing them"
Just look at the stick drawing game. The main character immediately choose the longest one by careful inspection and observation for the shape of it, knowing that one of their friend will definitely have to die
I have a theory this takes place during the Great Ukraine Famine Stalin caused in the 1920s and they're a small group of refugees the MC was trying to save.. but screwed up. The group was already starving before they reached the cabin and that's why it only took them one week to turn to cannibalism instead of three.

They tried to scrape it off, but even if you can't see it, the mold is already all over it. I saw other comments saying stuff about some molds producing hallucinations or something like that, which would fit with the dreams and the stuff that Anatoly was going through after the first loss.

judging by the dreams, the "protagonist" is the stalker/butcher in the old newpapers and notes, and the dream about chasing the twins is that he died (falling into hell part), but came back, hence why he's often called a monster, and eating humans is likely how he stays alive, a zombie or something

First one with the boy and person fitting in oven is "Baba Yaga i Ivanushka", one with one eyed person and blacksmith is "Likho Odnoglazoe" tale and a tale with two children running through field I can't remember name of(probably one of Baba Yaga tales). Common theme in them is that there is evil being that love to eat man's flesh.

After watching the prequel DLC playthrough my assessment of the protagonist was correct. It's even stated where the protagonist was keeping the meat was cool and dark. Perfect for preserving meat for longer than a couple of days.

A lot of these implications are describing the Player as a cannibalistic murder and probably immortal. Seeing as how they're seeking refuge from Ukraine so the game probably takes place in Poland (Zakopane is also a place in Poland) and how the Player Character can supposedly control the weather...I'm at a loss. There are many Slavic folk lore that I have yet to learn of. If you know of anything close to what's being described please le me know cause I would love to read about it. EDIT: Ya'll...I feel seriously stupid now for forgetting about BabaYaga, but I haven't read too much about her as of late so thank you all so much. People already mentioned it in comments but the dreams are often based on fairy tales about Baba Yaga, who is something of a witch who lives in a cabin in a forest and eats children. From the stories I know she rarely uses any special magical powers so i dunno if thats connected to the "are you causing this rain". As to whether it's just a cool connection to cannibalist MC or MC is actually a Baba Yaga, anyone's guess right now.. I think it'd be kind of funny if MC turned out to be Baba Yaga:D

I was going to say they were escaping the Holodomor but the news articles are from the 19th century. As some other commenters said, maybe the mc is somewhat supernatural and has been living for centuries.

It's interesting seeing how, fundamentally, the protagonist is pretty self-centered and not really very sympathetic. They don't seem to care all that much about their companions, seeking more to impress them and come off well than actually connect with them. Really, in a lot of ways, the protagonist is pretty responsible--though not fully--for what ends up happening to the group

Realistically, the first person they killed would have fed them for a week or so. Never understood why it didnt. He could have let the meat rot covered, cut off the moldy bits, and still made stuff out of it, Cooking meat to 165 would kill most of the bad bacteria if not all, Could have smoked it too.. Especially if he could chill it, like that "really cold corner" by gregor, would have been an easy method. No one can apparently cook so he didnt really have to worry about it. Either way, definitely could have survived on the first dead for atleast 1-2 weeks lol.
I bet the MC lied about it going bad to get the others to go mad. No one else ever saw the bodies (except Karin) so they may be in storage to tide MC over until the next group of teens wanders to the cabin!

So I looked it up. It's dangerous in a rainstorm but it turns out it's also one of the good times to go fishing. They could have set 2 in a team with rain ponchos to get fish. I get that 1 of the members doesnt like meat but it is survival. It's you or the animals, and they wont hesitate to choose.

I don't think they actually knew very much about survival, I mean they did say that Anatoly is illiterate, also there's the fact that they went out foraging every single day before the rain and barely came back with anything at all.

I mean we know who the cabin owner is, and in folklore it seems very much as if the cabin is intrinsically linked to her/her psyche. I think in the sequel game it even mentions that her 'roots' are like a tree, and they span very far... and I felt the implication from that was she's not confined to her cabin, she's connected to it whether she's there or not 😖

Agreed. Even in something like ddlc, which is already a really effective horror game, distorted faces always just looked kinda goofy, but I _did not_ like how it was done here, it was legitimately disturbing

Assuming they were just 2 days. The MC is talking with imaginary vegetables, it's safe to say we have no idea how much time passes between each segment where he is conscious.
It depends on whether you think they actually wanted Mariah to go out and get food/help or if it was a cover up for making emergency meat. Even Karin seemed pretty shocked at seeing the meat even if grimly accepted it and the fact before that she didn't think Mariah would be making it back. Ofc, I think there's stuff like trying to eat vermin/bugs and animal-based products in the house, or fishing or trying to go in pairs to gather, but if they honestly hoped Mariah would come back, it would be on MC for desecrating the corpse and serving it. They were starving so I figure they'd def eat first and ask questions later. Plus we only see parts of the day from MC's PoV. It's just that MC triggered that 'hunger' by presenting the meat to desperate people. Ofc if "leaving the cabin" was a farce starting with Mariah rather than from Anatoly, all my conjecture goes down the toilet ahaha;;;
so here's some info you may or may not find usefull: 1. cooking meat makes it last longer than raw meat, though not by much. it effectively sterlizes the meat from both bacteria and fungus. you can also drink the broth (it's meager compared to bone broth tho) to stave off hunger as the broth will be a little fatty too (depends on the meat and in this case the person's body fat ratio), it would be ideal to add salt to this too as only eating meat isn't very nutritious. 2. there's multiple ways of refridgerating without electricity such as using wet sand or putting cleaned meat (preferably you'd salt it too to make it last longer as the salt is a preservative) in a sealed container and submerge it in water, preferably moving water. this would be the most accessible of the two I've mentioned for these characters as they have a lot of water they can use. 3. if you ever happen to eat your friends, just an if, you should start by prepping the meat for storage and eating the blood and organs first. blood is pretty nutritious (insects like butterflies will chose it over any nectar or honey) and if you have flour you can make blood pudding, I rather like it though ofc usually it's made with pigs blood. you can also make blood soup but I've never tasted it before. the bones are best to make broth with ofc and the cartilage can also be cooked and eaten. if you're eating a person please don't eat the brain as you can get very sick from that (you can get kuru among other things) and though the brain may not be contaminated I'd advice avoiding eating any creatures brain. I've heard that tongue is quite tasty tho. you can also eat intestines although cleaning them can be quite bothersome. you can also make blood sausages with interstines as casings. you can make soups with them or skewer and grill. you can eat skin too and considering the characters situation and the fact that the skin is a very large organ they'd have enough to eat at least two smaller meals a day, if not more depending on how much water they use. 4. if you're low on foos adding water to your meals is great bc it takes up space in your stomach and makes you feel more full which in turn makes you less stressed. overall I've never eaten a human (shocking I know) but we're all still human and the same things we do to animal products and what we eat from them can still be hypothetically applied to us. I feel like I shouldn't know this much about how to eat a person but I do... the taste also seems to differ depending on who you ask and obviously also the seasoning. some say people taste like calf and others like lamb. the taste would probably depend on the persons life style as well. if we consider things like the fact that fat will let them survive longer then the first person they should have eaten should, in my opinion, have been karin. simply because she's one of the taller and therefore bigger characters and has big bobas, aka fat bc that's what bobas are. she'd have more blood than mariah, her bones would be bigger and since she's a healthy weight and not too skinny there'd be plenty of meat to go around. you might think greg would be a better pick but because he's so muscular there will be less fat on him which would be detrimental if we want to maximize their survival. psychologically however they're boned either way.
The relationships of the characters seem interesting, Gregor, Anatoly and Mariah seem to know each other before (and do some have crushes on each other?) , but Karin and MC tend to not know the others too well? Karin is just pure mean, and MC is just a monster. I wonder if both of them are folk tale antagonists, and the fact that MC had the knife to begin with? The MC might be trying to reenact folk tales, so giving Karin the knife allows for everything to occur. It also seems like MC has been alive for a LONG time, as well have done this before (and controlling the rain?). This is the first video game I have ever seen that references the Holodomor. The creators are really brave and amazing for doing this, and I thank them for it.
Ngl but I think "Going out" is actually them going to the basement for the player's character to "do the deed", that's why they looked so dramatic when they say goodbye before going out

@@bananaorangel123 If this takes place when people are saying its taking place (During Holodomor in the Ukraine) she's probably adverse to eating meat because the only meat they could get then was human.
Flood fishing is common, they could have tried it right out the window or up on the roof if needed. Making a "net" out of blankets or clothes could work, at the vey least you'd get some smaller critters like tadpoles which are safe if you cooked them. It also wouldn't exert too much energy standing still. Keeping whatever fish you catch alive in an extra in a bowl or bucket would also prevent waste.
pardon if i missed details, but i'm equally terrified, fascinated and curious about why karin and the mc gets to be the last ones standing. the amount of power and influence they yield is surprising.
Karin is pretty sus. Like, she also seems to have a peculiar interest in the MC from the start. Everyone acts pretty well natured enough from the start but Karin almost immediately starts talking to you about your anatomy books, asks you to describe “the old days” and asks for cooking lessons when everyone is starting to starve. She acts like she knows more about the MC than the others and the MC seems to have purposefully let her borrow his knife from the start. Really interested in seeing where this goes.

This game made me hungry, so I made some cabbage rolls at 1AM. I'm really content with my life and the choices I make. And it's fun to see the tired and confused face of my wife when I offer her cabbage roles in the middle of the night, when she came to the kitchen to get a glass of water.
Here are some things you need to know in case you're ever starving. If your food is old or rotten, and you're on the brink of death, eat it anyway. Like, if you're FOR A FACT DYING. It may kill you, it may just make you super sick. But 50% chance of dying is better than 100% chance of dying. Same rule goes with water. If you're thirsting to death, drink that questionable water as a last resort. Doctors can fix sick. They can't fix dead.
I don't know about that. For example, if you're stranded on a boat in the ocean and are dying of thirst, I'm pretty sure drinking the ocean water will only get you to die faster - be it due to making you ill and throw up and/or due to the high salt content - accelerating the death by dehydration. Same for the food - if you eat something that makes you violently ill and throw everything up, is that not a net loss?

But yeah stale/old food is a different case than something outright poisonous, it would make sense to consider rolling the dice there.
To be real, I'm surprised they're so hungry SO quickly. I've gone days without eating and it SUCKS but it doesn't make you like that. Maybe if it had been like... 1 and a half weeks, or over a month of shitty rationing, but fuck they went right out the gate with this shit.
I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I'm guessing the moldy bread probably caused some psychosis in them. Mold can do a lot of shit to your mind so it wouldn't surprise me of it made them all go nuts faster.
A whole body worth of meat is at least 40 lbs of meat and organs (you need to eat organs, as well). Ground bones will help keep your calcium stores up, and marrow (in broth, for example) contains all kinds of nutrients and even fat. You're not just done eating someone in a day or two. 🤷🏻♀️ And you're definitely not at desperation levels of starving after only that long. It's a little bit different if literally nobody has any fat stores, because you'll go through what is called "rabbit starvation." You need to have fat along with meat, or you can't digest it properly, and it just "runs through you," IYKWIM. You'll die faster than you would if you hadn't eaten any meat.
@@Acidfunkish these games involving cannibalism do quite often seem to ignore how much edible meat is actually _on_ a human body, but at least this one bothered to justify it by saying that the rest of the meat 'went bad' after a couple days. it seemed kind of fast to me but i'm not sure how long meat takes to spoil if it's not refrigerated or preserved. And then when it came to Gregor, Karin was just _so excited_ to get to carve up a person for meat that it didn't matter to her whether or not there was still good meat left from Anatoly. So, I appreciate that this game actually bothered to justify why a new person had to be killed every couple of days.

Okay, I love slavic folklore, and this game is a treat, with its references and overall creepiness. Pretty sure I can identify most of the fairy tales referenced in MC's dreams, at least the overall motifs (a witch or an imp sitting on your back, Baba Yaga trying to cook a kid but falling victim to the kid's craftiness and getting cooked herself, throwing stuff behind your back to escape, having a dinner at someone's house and the person isn't eating... You are then supposed to look beneath the table and see they have hooves for feet, by the way!), and the small chicken bone MC finds... Baba Yaga much? Hell, the entire game seems to be hinting that you are Baba Yaga or a similar entity, and you've been cooking people here for ages, with the four refugees (at first my thoughts went to the recent Russo-Ukrainian War, but the setting of the game doesn't seem to be modern... So, Holodomor, maybe?) being your next victims (aside from Karin, who appears to have become your apprentice instead). My fave is Anatoly, an his little squirrel friend who goes missing halfway through the game (Did it run away? I hope it ran away...). As for the little food friends, I think they might be the spirits of your past victims, only half-aware of who they are and really worried about your new "friends" (maybe they used to be children? Like that one kid who got killed and was found in a potato barrel could be our Potato guy?). I also loved the creepy Russian whispers - they were a bit hard to make out due to the accent, but wow. A game that focuses on my cultural heritage and does it really well? I'm all for it. Now to watch the endings!
@@prnc96 the motif of a witch trying to cook a child is common in folklore, so it happens in more than one fairy tale across the world. I think the stories referenced here are from Slavic folklore for the most part, but they do have analogies in other parts of the world.

I wonder if having your Social Link maxed means she'll give you back your knife since she trusts that you're on the same page as her. And based on the Internal monologue the character has had since the start, I firmly believe he's intended to be as such. Though with less violent tendencies.
The fact Karin grabbed the knife on the first day showed she did not trust anyone to not backstab her in her sleep, or to use it for killings when push comes to shove. It's like when you confront someone robbing you, if you decide to fight, you grab their weapons first. I guess it's symbolic for that.
Reading the comments and watchin the gameplay, I think I got a working theory for the basic backstory of this game. Possible spoilers. Few things to note: 1. The MC and the cast don’t seem to know each other well. That being said, the cast are pretty kind to the MC for some reason. 2. The other members of the group all seem to be fairly familiar with each other, but, outside of some exceptions, aren’t all that friendly to each other. Polite sure, but not friends. As revealed towards the end, we learn that the gang minus MC seem to be refugees from Ukraine. Most likely, the four of them are children from the same town who grew up together. Something major happened in their country, affecting their town, and out of desperation, the four of them team up for survival and flee to presumably Russia (based on the fact they can all read the books minus Anatoly). During their journey they meet the MC, who offers them an old, but safe and discreet place for them to live, with the MC offering to be their chef. Unbeknownst to the crew, MC is actually a cannibal serial killer from Zakopane (which the comments tell me is in Poland) and planned to eat them once they come to the cabin. MC brings them back to the cabin and the story begins.

Technically you won't get food poisoning from moldy bread depending on the type of mold. Sometimes you'll just have a bad taste and nothing else, sometimes a particularly nasty species of mold decided to make that bread it's breeding ground and you can be hospitalized or worse. Generally it's never wise to eat moldy bread slices, but if you find mold in your bag. Throw it all out. For one the entire bag is filled with spores, there is nothing you can do about that. And even if it wasn't, the thin hair like root system of the mold isn't just on the bread you see. The patches you CAN see is just the spore sacs, the roots you CANNOT see can span throughout multiple slices or even the entire bag. These rootlike mycelia are delicate and can rip easily so you wouldn't even know there was a young system in the bag without a microscope. Again, most molds on bread aren't too dangerous. But some CAN be dangerous to people so do not take that gamble. Throw your moldy bread out. And also examine your bread at the store thoroughly. My friend wound up with a bad bag filled with moldy bread straight from the store and practically wasted his money. This has been your Public Health and Safety Announcement that nobody asked for.
idk if all grocery stores do this, but if you notice the mold early on, you can probably ask for a return if you still have your receipt as it'll have the day of purchase. Again, I don't speak for all grocery stores and for some people it may not be worth the trouble, but it's better than a bag of moldy bread.
All this creepy stuff feels kinda unnecessary when you notice that there’s pine trees RIGHT OUTSIDE THE CABIN. You can eat the inner bark of pine trees as emergency food! Same thing with maple leaves! Sure, they don’t taste great, but it’s better than whatever is going on here! Edit: okay, I admit I did comment before I got to the scene where they look outside at the floodwaters, and it doesn’t look like there’s any pine trees there, so there might not be any in walking distance. I thought that the view from the inside of the cabin showed some thru the windows, but could have been wrong.
Also, with this level of desperation, i wish they would have tried to make some traps to catch fish, using what they have in the cabin. But then we wouldn’t have a story, and the starvation could have affected their thinking too

It's always "fun" to see stories where people start eating each other within a week, when it's easy to go about two weeks without any food if you just have water. Well, easier than resorting to cannibalism anyway.
Okay, so I got a theory that might sound absolutely wild, but here me out... (And spoilers for the video) The dreams our main character has all seem reminiscent of fairy tales. Specifically, a lot of them reference the witches death in Hansel and Gretel, where one of the kids trick the witch into climbing into her own oven. When talking to Karin about the note on the way, she mentions that it looks old, and then asks you what the 'old times' (I'm paraphrasing here lol) were like. The conversation with the Raspberry implies that the main character is somehow controlling the rainstorm. Again this might be absolutely wild. But is the player character some kind of witch? Like, the kind of evil witch that shows up in fairy tales to eat children? Some of the dialogue implies we have powers. Karin thinks we're making a joke when we tell her 'how long' we've been doing this, maybe because we've been alive for a ridiculous amount of time. The letters and notes we've found could be about us, at some point in the past. And that would explain something about the Chompettes. They wouldn't be representations for guilt over our past victims. No, it could be that we quite literally turned our victims into living food. Transmutation is a common curse in those kinda stories. This is wild speculation, and will probably get disproven in the coming episodes. But that certainly would be a twist.
The game mentions that it is inspired by "Russian folklore". I've managed to correlate two of the dreams with specific Russian fairy tales, the first one and the poker one. Both involve a creature called a "likho"; the first is from the perspective of a likho victim, and the second is from the perspective of the likho itself. The other dreams likely correspond to fairy tales too, but I haven't been able to figure out which ones.

I was really sad with all the dialogue between Gregor and Anatoly. They clearly were extremely close, and I think the game was hinting that they might have even stronger feelings for each other...
They definitely should have sent Gregor to forage for food, he is the least likely to live without food, for the same reason that he would be the best at foraging for it, he's a tall strong big man with a high metabolism. Meanwhile Mariah is probably the most likely to survive starving the longest, she's the least physically capable of foraging, and I would even say that her vegan sensibilities might make her hesitant to gather meat if she came across any game injured by the flood.
I try not to think about it simply because it makes what happens even worse. 😭 (Jjsjjsjff oh nooooo what if Gregor sadly saying he never told Anatoly the truth once he leaves the cabin was about his true feelings oh nooooooo 😭😭)
Not an expert but if I remember correctly a good tip for making food fill you for longer is to chew it as little as possible as bigger pieces take longer to digest
I remember seeing a note at the end of a chapter in a horror manga that said smaller bites and chewing more can be helpful if you are eating food that is expired since the enzymes in your spit have an easier time breaking down the food. Ofc as a last resort.

Little history time for anyone interested: the fact this is taking place in Russia is very on point and I believe the timeline is somewhere between 1932-1933 during the Holodomor aka famine of Ukraine. During this time, reports of cannibalism were rampant and Stalin even had an island (Nazinsky Island) turned into a prison settlement, giving the prisoners *no food rations* or means of survival and *they were completely surrounded by ice cold water*. Even if they survived the waters, they were shot by Stalin’s patrols on the other shoreline. People on the island quickly turned to cannibalism to survive. Between 4000-5000 people died on the island.
This is not taking place in russia tho. In books u learn about "Zakopane" in poland which is near where the cabin is. In the demo of the game the vegetables ask u questions and one of the questions is "where are we?" And the right answer is in mountains someplace near poland (don't remember the name) but yeah u are right about the holodomor thing probably.
I’m only about 20 minutes in, but Anatoly and Gregor’s weird little “Big Guy” and “Little Guy” routine lowkey seems like passive aggressive flirting if I tune out all the obvious horror elements of this game lmaoo. Edit: Okay yeah so Gregor and Anatoly were totally boyfriends. Also it’s so weird that leaving the cabin seems to be a metaphor for them at least being certain that they’re gonna die and be eaten yet Karin threw a huge fit about sending Gregor out since he can’t swim and “wouldn’t even stand a chance”??? So do the remaining cabin members only eat the ones that they send out if they come back empty handed or if they beg to be let in back without going too far because they can’t handle the freezing waters or something? That’s the only thing that makes the most sense to me. Also it’s weird but the mc definitely seems like they have some sort of relation to the concept of cannibalistic witches from fairy tales (because of the dreams). It almost seems like their immediate desire to jump to cannibalism is actually somewhat involuntarily. All I can think is that they dealt with something as “brutal” as this before (mainly because of the early dialogue with Karin where she asks about the map) and turned to cannibalism out of necessity but then became like,,, addicted to it (cannibalism is apparently super addictive on top of being unhealthy)? It’s obvious that they have some sort of guilt over it even if it doesn’t really seem like they have any true empathy for their companions and if we fully trust the text of the game, they seemingly cut up and cooked both Mariah and Anatoly while sleep walking.
gregor loves anatoly, and anatoly loves mariah. they're not a couple; the reason gregor was blushing was because he got to spend time with his crush. he just never had the chance to tell anatoly how he felt. other than that, i'm 100% under the impression that both mariah and anatoly returned safely as promised but MC killed them while sleep-walking. if you think about it, mariah _really_ kept her promise. she promised to come back, and she promised to keep them alive. her body did, in fact, help them survive for a few days.
Re: Cannibalism being addictive, it's a little bit of fact and fiction. Yes, human meat can be addictive, however, the thing that _causes_ addiction and declining mental faculties isn't the meat itself - it's eating the nerves. Specifically the brain, and potentially the spinal cord. A cut from, say, the leg might be safe, although there are about five million reasons why you probably shouldn't try it. Mind you, the long-term effects of cannibalism in humans isn't well researched for obvious reasons, but you can see something very similar with another mammal; ever heard of Mad Cow Disease?
It's amazing when you dive into the theories of this game. I've seen so many and all of them seem very possible. I love it when games have this deeper meaning to them.
Genuinely didn't expect how good this game was going to be. Damnit, those faces actually freaked me out... And their dialogue was so heartbreaking... Plus there's so many subtle details and things that give details to the world and characters you wouldn't understand until later, like their strange clothing or why they're even out in a cabin in the woods in the first place.
I spent about two thirds of the playthrough hopelessely wondering about the food situation, like, who the heck would even consider staying at a cabin, and with known terrible weather, without canned or preserved food? To me that'd be the #1 rule when you're planning to stay somewhere removed from civilisation, even if you're planning to live off the land or hunt, and _especially_ if the people intending to do so have no specific experience. ... Yeah, I thought it was a leisure trip at first. Apparently not, given what we learn from the companions in the later stages of the video. And I'm now even more suspicious of *(SPOILERS)* the player character's role in all this. (Putting aside the game straight up confirming his credentials as an established cannibalistic monster, that is.) Potentially the cabin would be theirs, given the article and the nature of the books on the bookshelf. So the PC must be more used to life in the wilderness than the others are. As other commenters pointed out, there are things (not very nourishing, but still) in the vicinity that could've been used to make something to eat before "finding new meat". Nevermind them cutting into the rations to make big spreads on the first few days (on a slightly related note: why the heck would only one person manage the rations? I honestly thought that they were all in charge of them at the beginning of the game, and then was confused when they all turned on the PC for mismanagement. Planning each meal beforehand as a group would be best if you have limited supplies, but maybe the fact that it didn't happen was due to the PC's influence also). This leads me to think that this situation might've been partially engineered by the player character, so that the others would have (or think they have) no other resort but turn to cannibalism. The PC may or may not have exploited the others' ignorance and failings to lead them in that direction (with some taking to it more enthusiastically than others). This may just be the conspiracy theorist in me talking, though, so we'll see if the rest of the playthrough clears this up (and if the student doesn't surpass the master, and they don't end up becoming Karin's next meal). Sidenote: 22:02: Hindsight is 2020.
All I can think with this game is how funny it is that they went from having plenty of food to starving with moldy bread over the course of just....a day. I feel like it'd drive home the starvation narrative better if there was more of a wind-up to the lack of food. Maybe a few more nights of the food getting steadily less extravagant, going from stew to cabbage rolls to....bread with toast, just, it's kind of hilarious.
honestly I'd say it makes sense, if they had rationed the original amount of food then it would've lasted a lot longer. a stew and a cabbage roll could potentially use up a lot of ingredients considering we don't know exactly how big the portions were.
I really like this game but it was SO difficult reaching to the end because I just can't stand Karin. Bravo to the writer, for creating such a horrible character.

Given the circumstances (ukranian refugees fleeing from severe famine, hints of deeply rooted psychological issues leading to borderline psychosis, and potentially tripping balls on hallucinogenic mold in spoiled food/ the air) I'd say it's not entirely impossible that they could drop to that level so quickly. You're only ever three meals away from complete and utter anarchy after all. We are capable of unspeakable things given the right motivation, and hunger is one hell of a motivator.
The longest I've gone without food before was for a 3-day fast. Yeah it sucked but you won't rly die from it. People often do long water-fasts and you can often prolong your fast if you make sure to maintain your salt levels.
As a slav, I found it interesting how this game makes a lot of references to slavic folk lore and fairy tales: in many of them the villain tries to eat a child or someone else by baking them in the oven. So basically they act nice and then make you sit on a shovel (which they use to actually put you into the oven)

As much as I think this game is about the protagonist suffering trauma by having a severe PTSD moment of seeing his friends die and them eating them (thus seeing themselves as a Baba Yaga/monster/cannibal), the story teller in my brain goes back to Potato who said at the beginning “Cabbage forced me into this cabinet, this is basically kidnapping”. Seeing how the group constantly went out without you, you being forced to stay at the cabin, Karin’s constantly ribbing at you (ignoring her relationship events), I hesitantly propose that for some reason Karin/the group kidnapped you, hiding out in the woods and then accidentally getting caught in the floods. This could explain why all the “kind/soft” dialogue in the first few days seemed so cold and stilted: it’s heard from a victim’s perspective. Your captors’ words would aways sound creepy or scary no matter how cheerful they try to make it sound.
I also suspect Potato's words have some weight. I figured it meant the MC was there against their will for some reason or another. Maybe they got pressured into coming with the group or something because of dire circumstances.

I guess the "chicken" bone MC found under the floorboard could have been the Squirrel's. Maybe Anatoly, completely out of his mind due to his hunger, snapped and ended up eating him, or Karin ate his pet while he was asleep (after all she had a knife with her) and also maybe that was one of the main reasons which drove him to rather drown himself; Anatoly did say that he couldn't bear to continue with Karin tormenting him overall and also the possibility that Karin could kill him in his sleep and eat him next

Have you noticed how the main characters treat each other? Although according to the story they are friends, they do not support each other, discounting the difficulties on others. Anatoly and Gregor seem good, but only while talking - they also didn't help each other or the others once. Of all the company, it seems, only Maria had something truly good in her.

judging by the dreams, the "protagonist" is the stalker/butcher in the old newpapers and notes, and the dream about chasing the twins is that he died (falling into hell part), but came back, hence why he's often called a monster, and eating humans is likely how he stays alive, a zombie or something

Player character has ulterior motives from what can be gleaned from the story. Butchered meat wouldn't be completely inedible after a day unless it was summer temperatures and in the elements
After watching the prequel DLC playthrough my assessment of the protagonist was correct. It's even stated where the protagonist was keeping the meat was cool and dark. Perfect for preserving meat for longer than a couple of days.

A lot of these implications are describing the Player as a cannibalistic murder and probably immortal. Seeing as how they're seeking refuge from Ukraine so the game probably takes place in Poland (Zakopane is also a place in Poland) and how the Player Character can supposedly control the weather...I'm at a loss. There are many Slavic folk lore that I have yet to learn of. If you know of anything close to what's being described please le me know cause I would love to read about it.

People already mentioned it in comments but the dreams are often based on fairy tales about Baba Yaga, who is something of a witch who lives in a cabin in a forest and eats children. From the stories I know she rarely uses any special magical powers so i dunno if thats connected to the "are you causing this rain". As to whether it's just a cool connection to cannibalist MC or MC is actually a Baba Yaga, anyone's guess right now.. I think it'd be kind of funny if MC turned out to be Baba Yaga:D

They don't seem to care all that much about their companions, seeking more to impress them and come off well than actually connect with them. Really, in a lot of ways, the protagonist is pretty responsible--though not fully--for what ends up happening to the group

Realistically, the first person they killed would have fed them for a week or so. Never understood why it didnt. He could have let the meat rot covered, cut off the moldy bits, and still made stuff out of it, Cooking meat to 165 would kill most of the bad bacteria if not all, Could have smoked it too.. Especially if he could chill it, like that "really cold corner" by gregor, would have been an easy method. No one can apparently cook so he didnt really have to worry about it. Either way, definitely could have survived on the first dead for atleast 1-2 weeks lol.
I bet the MC lied about it going bad to get the others to go mad. No one else ever saw the bodies (except Karin) so they may be in storage to tide MC over until the next group of teens wanders to the cabin!

So I looked it up. It's dangerous in a rainstorm but it turns out it's also one of the good times to go fishing. They could have set 2 in a team with rain ponchos to get fish. I get that 1 of the members doesnt like meat but it is survival. It's you or the animals, and they wont hesitate to choose.

I think in the sequel game it even mentions that her 'roots' are like a tree, and they span very far... and I felt the implication from that was she's not confined to her cabin, she's connected to it whether she's there or not 😖

It depends on whether you think they actually wanted Mariah to go out and get food/help or if it was a cover up for making emergency meat. Even Karin seemed pretty shocked at seeing the meat even if grimly accepted it and the fact before that she didn't think Mariah would be making it back.
Ofc, I think there's stuff like trying to eat vermin/bugs and animal-based products in the house, or fishing or trying to go in pairs to gather, but if they honestly hoped Mariah would come back, it would be on MC for desecrating the corpse and serving it. They were starving so I figure they'd def eat first and ask questions later. Plus we only see parts of the day from MC's PoV.
It's just that MC triggered that 'hunger' by presenting the meat to desperate people.
Ofc if "leaving the cabin" was a farce starting with Mariah rather than from Anatoly, all my conjecture goes down the toilet ahaha;;;
so here's some info you may or may not find usefull:
1. cooking meat makes it last longer than raw meat, though not by much. it effectively sterlizes the meat from both bacteria and fungus. you can also drink the broth (it's meager compared to bone broth tho) to stave off hunger as the broth will be a little fatty too (depends on the meat and in this case the person's body fat ratio), it would be ideal to add salt to this too as only eating meat isn't very nutritious.
2. there's multiple ways of refridgerating without electricity such as using wet sand or putting cleaned meat (preferably you'd salt it too to make it last longer as the salt is a preservative) in a sealed container and submerge it in water, preferably moving water. this would be the most accessible of the two I've mentioned for these characters as they have a lot of water they can use.
3. if you ever happen to eat your friends, just an if, you should start by prepping the meat for storage and eating the blood and organs first. blood is pretty nutritious (insects like butterflies will chose it over any nectar or honey) and if you have flour you can make blood pudding, I rather like it though ofc usually it's made with pigs blood. you can also make blood soup but I've never tasted it before. the bones are best to make broth with ofc and the cartilage can also be cooked and eaten. if you're eating a person please don't eat the brain as you can get very sick from that (you can get kuru among other things) and though the brain may not be contaminated I'd advice avoiding eating any creatures brain. I've heard that tongue is quite tasty tho. you can also eat intestines although cleaning them can be quite bothersome. you can also make blood sausages with interstines as casings. you can make soups with them or skewer and grill. you can eat skin too and considering the characters situation and the fact that the skin is a very large organ they'd have enough to eat at least two smaller meals a day, if not more depending on how much water they use.
4. if you're low on foos adding water to your meals is great bc it takes up space in your stomach and makes you feel more full which in turn makes you less stressed.
overall I've never eaten a human (shocking I know) but we're all still human and the same things we do to animal products and what we eat from them can still be hypothetically applied to us. I feel like I shouldn't know this much about how to eat a person but I do... the taste also seems to differ depending on who you ask and obviously also the seasoning. some say people taste like calf and others like lamb. the taste would probably depend on the persons life style as well. if we consider things like the fact that fat will let them survive longer then the first person they should have eaten should, in my opinion, have been karin. simply because she's one of the taller and therefore bigger characters and has big bobas, aka fat bc that's what bobas are. she'd have more blood than mariah, her bones would be bigger and since she's a healthy weight and not too skinny there'd be plenty of meat to go around. you might think greg would be a better pick but because he's so muscular there will be less fat on him which would be detrimental if we want to maximize their survival. psychologically however they're boned either way.

The relationships of the characters seem interesting, Gregor, Anatoly and Mariah seem to know each other before (and do some have crushes on each other?) , but Karin and MC tend to not know the others too well? Karin is just pure mean, and MC is just a monster. I wonder if both of them are folk tale antagonists, and the fact that MC had the knife to begin with? The MC might be trying to reenact folk tales, so giving Karin the knife allows for everything to occur. It also seems like MC has been alive for a LONG time, as well have done this before (and controlling the rain?).

Flood fishing is common, they could have tried it right out the window or up on the roof if needed. Making a "net" out of blankets or clothes could work, at the vey least you'd get some smaller critters like tadpoles which are safe if you cooked them. It also wouldn't exert too much energy standing still. Keeping whatever fish you catch alive in an extra in a bowl or bucket would also prevent waste.

pardon if i missed details, but i'm equally terrified, fascinated and curious about why karin and the mc gets to be the last ones standing. the amount of power and influence they yield is surprising.

Karin is pretty sus. Like, she also seems to have a peculiar interest in the MC from the start. Everyone acts pretty well natured enough from the start but Karin almost immediately starts talking to you about your anatomy books, asks you to describe “the old days” and asks for cooking lessons when everyone is starting to starve. She acts like she knows more about the MC than the others and the MC seems to have purposefully let her borrow his knife from the start. Really interested in seeing where this goes.

Here are some things you need to know in case you're ever starving.
If your food is old or rotten, and you're on the brink of death, eat it anyway. Like, if you're FOR A FACT DYING.
It may kill you, it may just make you super sick. But 50% chance of dying is better than 100% chance of dying.
Same rule goes with water. If you're thirsting to death, drink that questionable water as a last resort. Doctors can fix sick. They can't fix dead.
I don't know about that. For example, if you're stranded on a boat in the ocean and are dying of thirst, I'm pretty sure drinking the ocean water will only get you to die faster - be it due to making you ill and throw up and/or due to the high salt content - accelerating the death by dehydration.
Same for the food - if you eat something that makes you violently ill and throw everything up, is that not a net loss?

Secondly, if you are minutes away from dying of starvation, you won't have anything to throw up in the first place. Eating old food is better than eating no food at all when you have no choice.

I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I'm guessing the moldy bread probably caused some psychosis in them. Mold can do a lot of shit to your mind so it wouldn't surprise me of it made them all go nuts faster.
It’s implied they’re running from a genocide and were already struggling with starvation before they started living at the cabin.
A whole body worth of meat is at least 40 lbs of meat and organs (you need to eat organs, as well). Ground bones will help keep your calcium stores up, and marrow (in broth, for example) contains all kinds of nutrients and even fat. You're not just done eating someone in a day or two. 🤷🏻♀️ And you're definitely not at desperation levels of starving after only that long.
It's a little bit different if literally nobody has any fat stores, because you'll go through what is called "rabbit starvation." You need to have fat along with meat, or you can't digest it properly, and it just "runs through you," IYKWIM. You'll die faster than you would if you hadn't eaten any meat.
@@Acidfunkish these games involving cannibalism do quite often seem to ignore how much edible meat is actually _on_ a human body, but at least this one bothered to justify it by saying that the rest of the meat 'went bad' after a couple days. it seemed kind of fast to me but i'm not sure how long meat takes to spoil if it's not refrigerated or preserved. And then when it came to Gregor, Karin was just _so excited_ to get to carve up a person for meat that it didn't matter to her whether or not there was still good meat left from Anatoly. So, I appreciate that this game actually bothered to justify why a new person had to be killed every couple of days.

Okay, I love slavic folklore, and this game is a treat, with its references and overall creepiness. Pretty sure I can identify most of the fairy tales referenced in MC's dreams, at least the overall motifs (a witch or an imp sitting on your back, Baba Yaga trying to cook a kid but falling victim to the kid's craftiness and getting cooked herself, throwing stuff behind your back to escape, having a dinner at someone's house and the person isn't eating... You are then supposed to look beneath the table and see they have hooves for feet, by the way!), and the small chicken bone MC finds... Baba Yaga much? Hell, the entire game seems to be hinting that you are Baba Yaga or a similar entity, and you've been cooking people here for ages, with the four refugees (at first my thoughts went to the recent Russo-Ukrainian War, but the setting of the game doesn't seem to be modern... So, Holodomor, maybe?) being your next victims (aside from Karin, who appears to have become your apprentice instead). My fave is Anatoly, an his little squirrel friend who goes missing halfway through the game (Did it run away? I hope it ran away...). As for the little food friends, I think they might be the spirits of your past victims, only half-aware of who they are and really worried about your new "friends" (maybe they used to be children? Like that one kid who got killed and was found in a potato barrel could be our Potato guy?). I also loved the creepy Russian whispers - they were a bit hard to make out due to the accent, but wow. A game that focuses on my cultural heritage and does it really well? I'm all for it. Now to watch the endings!

@@prnc96 the motif of a witch trying to cook a child is common in folklore, so it happens in more than one fairy tale across the world. I think the stories referenced here are from Slavic folklore for the most part, but they do have analogies in other parts of the world.

And based on the Internal monologue the character has had since the start, I firmly believe he's intended to be as such. Though with less violent tendencies.
Spoiler: She will actually drop the knife on the last act if your relationship is maxed out
The fact Karin grabbed the knife on the first day showed she did not trust anyone to not backstab her in her sleep, or to use it for killings when push comes to shove.
It's like when you confront someone robbing you, if you decide to fight, you grab their weapons first. I guess it's symbolic for that.
Reading the comments and watchin the gameplay, I think I got a working theory for the basic backstory of this game. Possible spoilers.
Few things to note:
1. The MC and the cast don’t seem to know each other well. That being said, the cast are pretty kind to the MC for some reason.
2. The other members of the group all seem to be fairly familiar with each other, but, outside of some exceptions, aren’t all that friendly to each other. Polite sure, but not friends.
As revealed towards the end, we learn that the gang minus MC seem to be refugees from Ukraine. Most likely, the four of them are children from the same town who grew up together. Something major happened in their country, affecting their town, and out of desperation, the four of them team up for survival and flee to presumably Russia (based on the fact they can all read the books minus Anatoly). During their journey they meet the MC, who offers them an old, but safe and discreet place for them to live, with the MC offering to be their chef. Unbeknownst to the crew, MC is actually a cannibal serial killer from Zakopane (which the comments tell me is in Poland) and planned to eat them once they come to the cabin. MC brings them back to the cabin and the story begins.

Technically you won't get food poisoning from moldy bread depending on the type of mold. Sometimes you'll just have a bad taste and nothing else, sometimes a particularly nasty species of mold decided to make that bread it's breeding ground and you can be hospitalized or worse. Generally it's never wise to eat moldy bread slices, but if you find mold in your bag. Throw it all out. For one the entire bag is filled with spores, there is nothing you can do about that. And even if it wasn't, the thin hair like root system of the mold isn't just on the bread you see. The patches you CAN see is just the spore sacs, the roots you CANNOT see can span throughout multiple slices or even the entire bag. These rootlike mycelia are delicate and can rip easily so you wouldn't even know there was a young system in the bag without a microscope.
Again, most molds on bread aren't too dangerous. But some CAN be dangerous to people so do not take that gamble. Throw your moldy bread out. And also examine your bread at the store thoroughly. My friend wound up with a bad bag filled with moldy bread straight from the store and practically wasted his money.

idk if all grocery stores do this, but if you notice the mold early on, you can probably ask for a return if you still have your receipt as it'll have the day of purchase. Again, I don't speak for all grocery stores and for some people it may not be worth the trouble, but it's better than a bag of moldy bread.

It's always "fun" to see stories where people start eating each other within a week, when it's easy to go about two weeks without any food if you just have water.

Okay, so I got a theory that might sound absolutely wild, but here me out...
(And spoilers for the video)
The dreams our main character has all seem reminiscent of fairy tales. Specifically, a lot of them reference the witches death in Hansel and Gretel, where one of the kids trick the witch into climbing into her own oven. When talking to Karin about the note on the way, she mentions that it looks old, and then asks you what the 'old times' (I'm paraphrasing here lol) were like. The conversation with the Raspberry implies that the main character is somehow controlling the rainstorm.
Again this might be absolutely wild. But is the player character some kind of witch? Like, the kind of evil witch that shows up in fairy tales to eat children? Some of the dialogue implies we have powers. Karin thinks we're making a joke when we tell her 'how long' we've been doing this, maybe because we've been alive for a ridiculous amount of time. The letters and notes we've found could be about us, at some point in the past. And that would explain something about the Chompettes. They wouldn't be representations for guilt over our past victims. No, it could be that we quite literally turned our victims into living food. Transmutation is a common curse in those kinda stories.
This is wild speculation, and will probably get disproven in the coming episodes. But that certainly would be a twist.
The game mentions that it is inspired by "Russian folklore". I've managed to correlate two of the dreams with specific Russian fairy tales, the first one and the poker one. Both involve a creature called a "likho"; the first is from the perspective of a likho victim, and the second is from the perspective of the likho itself. The other dreams likely correspond to fairy tales too, but I haven't been able to figure out which ones.

I was really sad with all the dialogue between Gregor and Anatoly. They clearly were extremely close, and I think the game was hinting that they might have even stronger feelings for each other...
They made sure to put some kind of possibly redeeming factors in for each character, or at least relatable.

But seriously, they were kind of in a place where I up and said out loud, "That's kind of.. not platonic?"
They definitely should have sent Gregor to forage for food, he is the least likely to live without food, for the same reason that he would be the best at foraging for it, he's a tall strong big man with a high metabolism.
Meanwhile Mariah is probably the most likely to survive starving the longest, she's the least physically capable of foraging, and I would even say that her vegan sensibilities might make her hesitant to gather meat if she came across any game injured by the flood.

Not an expert but if I remember correctly a good tip for making food fill you for longer is to chew it as little as possible as bigger pieces take longer to digest
But eating slower also helps your body take in the nutrients better thus prolonging the starvation level
I remember seeing a note at the end of a chapter in a horror manga that said smaller bites and chewing more can be helpful if you are eating food that is expired since the enzymes in your spit have an easier time breaking down the food. Ofc as a last resort.
I got so excited when you got the "they call the wind" achievement! That's actually a reference to a song from a really old musical called paint your wagon! They call the wind Mariah is the name of the song! I don't see many references to it and I grew up watching old musicals and movies so that was exciting to see!

Little history time for anyone interested: the fact this is taking place in Russia is very on point and I believe the timeline is somewhere between 1932-1933 during the Holodomor aka famine of Ukraine. During this time, reports of cannibalism were rampant and Stalin even had an island (Nazinsky Island) turned into a prison settlement, giving the prisoners *no food rations* or means of survival and *they were completely surrounded by ice cold water*. Even if they survived the waters, they were shot by Stalin’s patrols on the other shoreline. People on the island quickly turned to cannibalism to survive. Between 4000-5000 people died on the island.
This is not taking place in russia tho. In books u learn about "Zakopane" in poland which is near where the cabin is. In the demo of the game the vegetables ask u questions and one of the questions is "where are we?" And the right answer is in mountains someplace near poland (don't remember the name) but yeah u are right about the holodomor thing probably.

I’m only about 20 minutes in, but Anatoly and Gregor’s weird little “Big Guy” and “Little Guy” routine lowkey seems like passive aggressive flirting if I tune out all the obvious horror elements of this game lmaoo.
Edit: Okay yeah so Gregor and Anatoly were totally boyfriends. Also it’s so weird that leaving the cabin seems to be a metaphor for them at least being certain that they’re gonna die and be eaten yet Karin threw a huge fit about sending Gregor out since he can’t swim and “wouldn’t even stand a chance”??? So do the remaining cabin members only eat the ones that they send out if they come back empty handed or if they beg to be let in back without going too far because they can’t handle the freezing waters or something? That’s the only thing that makes the most sense to me.
Also it’s weird but the mc definitely seems like they have some sort of relation to the concept of cannibalistic witches from fairy tales (because of the dreams). It almost seems like their immediate desire to jump to cannibalism is actually somewhat involuntarily. All I can think is that they dealt with something as “brutal” as this before (mainly because of the early dialogue with Karin where she asks about the map) and turned to cannibalism out of necessity but then became like,,, addicted to it (cannibalism is apparently super addictive on top of being unhealthy)? It’s obvious that they have some sort of guilt over it even if it doesn’t really seem like they have any true empathy for their companions and if we fully trust the text of the game, they seemingly cut up and cooked both Mariah and Anatoly while sleep walking.
gregor loves anatoly, and anatoly loves mariah. they're not a couple; the reason gregor was blushing was because he got to spend time with his crush. he just never had the chance to tell anatoly how he felt.
other than that, i'm 100% under the impression that both mariah and anatoly returned safely as promised but MC killed them while sleep-walking. if you think about it, mariah _really_ kept her promise. she promised to come back, and she promised to keep them alive. her body did, in fact, help them survive for a few days.
Re: Cannibalism being addictive, it's a little bit of fact and fiction. Yes, human meat can be addictive, however, the thing that _causes_ addiction and declining mental faculties isn't the meat itself - it's eating the nerves. Specifically the brain, and potentially the spinal cord. A cut from, say, the leg might be safe, although there are about five million reasons why you probably shouldn't try it.
Mind you, the long-term effects of cannibalism in humans isn't well researched for obvious reasons, but you can see something very similar with another mammal; ever heard of Mad Cow Disease?

Genuinely didn't expect how good this game was going to be. Damnit, those faces actually freaked me out... And their dialogue was so heartbreaking... Plus there's so many subtle details and things that give details to the world and characters you wouldn't understand until later, like their strange clothing or why they're even out in a cabin in the woods in the first place.
I spent about two thirds of the playthrough hopelessely wondering about the food situation, like, who the heck would even consider staying at a cabin, and with known terrible weather, without canned or preserved food? To me that'd be the #1 rule when you're planning to stay somewhere removed from civilisation, even if you're planning to live off the land or hunt, and _especially_ if the people intending to do so have no specific experience.
... Yeah, I thought it was a leisure trip at first. Apparently not, given what we learn from the companions in the later stages of the video. And I'm now even more suspicious of *(SPOILERS)*
the player character's role in all this. (Putting aside the game straight up confirming his credentials as an established cannibalistic monster, that is.) Potentially the cabin would be theirs, given the article and the nature of the books on the bookshelf. So the PC must be more used to life in the wilderness than the others are. As other commenters pointed out, there are things (not very nourishing, but still) in the vicinity that could've been used to make something to eat before "finding new meat". Nevermind them cutting into the rations to make big spreads on the first few days
(on a slightly related note: why the heck would only one person manage the rations? I honestly thought that they were all in charge of them at the beginning of the game, and then was confused when they all turned on the PC for mismanagement. Planning each meal beforehand as a group would be best if you have limited supplies, but maybe the fact that it didn't happen was due to the PC's influence also).
This leads me to think that this situation might've been partially engineered by the player character, so that the others would have (or think they have) no other resort but turn to cannibalism. The PC may or may not have exploited the others' ignorance and failings to lead them in that direction (with some taking to it more enthusiastically than others).
This may just be the conspiracy theorist in me talking, though, so we'll see if the rest of the playthrough clears this up (and if the student doesn't surpass the master, and they don't end up becoming Karin's next meal).
Sidenote: 22:02: Hindsight is 2020.
All I can think with this game is how funny it is that they went from having plenty of food to starving with moldy bread over the course of just....a day. I feel like it'd drive home the starvation narrative better if there was more of a wind-up to the lack of food. Maybe a few more nights of the food getting steadily less extravagant, going from stew to cabbage rolls to....bread with toast, just, it's kind of hilarious.
honestly I'd say it makes sense, if they had rationed the original amount of food then it would've lasted a lot longer. a stew and a cabbage roll could potentially use up a lot of ingredients considering we don't know exactly how big the portions were.
