The rig for the recording of this tune was a little unique - Fretless StingRay, played with a pick, with OC-2 and a truly heroic amount of compression. Levin apparently used 2 compressors, one at the beginning of the signal chain and one at the end. One of the all-time great bass lines in a pop hit for sure! Great work @coversolutions
I play today sledge hammer. I am 53, I used to play bass guitar when I was 18 then I left for work. I am enjoing strarting again. You gave me an opportunity! Thank you!
I love comments like these. I had a prolonged hiatus from guitar and bass for about 8-9 years, but I started playing again nearly 6 years ago. It’s been so much fun learning new things and I’ve actually gotten way better than I was before I originally stopped playing. It really is a great hobby.
I can't BELIEVE this guy put the chords AND modes as well!! This channel is amazing. Such a helpful thing, when so many bass channels simply don't do it.
levin used multiple output sources when doing octave effects, so if you want to nail it for real, you need to use 2 amps or direct into the board twice. you can either split the signal before the octave, or use a unit with a dry-through/out.
More like plodding. It might seem funky to us white boys, but compared to funky funky, this is plodding, just like the movements in the video. As if a burdened step was taken for every snare hit. The rest is the body preparing itself for the next step, so burdened, so laborious, so bludgeoning to what may be underfoot. Like some type of heavy weight hammer, used generally for destroying otherwise impervious structures, which apparently can include relationships and attitudes as well as the tangible. Who knew? Funky? Okaaaay. Right. Like funk. Funkesque. Alluding to funk. Reporting as funk. Not funk. There IS a halfhearted funk break, lots of them, but overthought and underfelt. But yeah. No. Funky -ish ain’t funky. That chic is so stunning! Or she’s stunning-ish. The ear of the beholder doesn’t redefine funk. It doesn’t even stank.
BECOME A PATRON TO GET SONGS/TABS: www.patreon.com/coversolutions Hello. As is say on the description, i'm not quite happy with the tone on this one but i think is good enough. Check the description on every video for more info. Let me know if you need any help.
The reason why you're not so happy with the sound you achieved on this song is, Tony Levin played the Bass Line using his "Funk Fingers" . That means he attached short Drumsticks to his Index and Middlefinger and hit the Strings with 'em. He didn't use a Pick on this song. Watch Secret World Live Concert on DVD.
@@CoverSolutions Sorry I have to correct myself. The Song at this Concert he useses Funk Fingers was "Steam". I tried this method a few years ago... Oh boy... Practice, practice, practice, but the sound you get once you found out how to use the Funk Fingers correctly is amazing. Long live Tony Levin. By the way... I also learned a lot from your Videos. Now I know how to play Tool's " Schisms " correctly. Thanks for that.
I am not an instrumentalist, but this song has been living in my head the last couple weeks. This bass line is glorious! I love hearing it picked out, and seeing the chart for it! It’s like a new language (I read regular sheet music)! 😍 Thank you so much! 🙏💝
Well, I find it really funny how at the same time I start to learn this bassline you upload a video of yourself covering said song. Pretty cool how things happen like that (and great vid, my friend). 🤘
Well done CoverSolutions!!! (Nice bass too.) Thank you for sharing your expert and professional chops. Am Subscribing and hitting PLAY again. Here We GO!!!
I hear G# major working as a dominant instead of minor on the intro right before the vocal and the loop at the end the Eb sounds more like Ebm modulating again back to the the intro tone.
It’s funny, I remember learning this off the CD when it first came out, and I just assumed Tony had tuned down a half step to E flat, and now I can’t imagine playing it standard tuning!!
If you have a 5 string bass like me, you can just transpose the notes an octave lower (for example the 6th fret of the A string would be the 4th fret on the B/H string.
I challenge you to make a cover of one of these soundtracks! You'd be the first one ever! 1. The Wasteland - Into The Breach 2. Cataclysm - Into The Breach 3. Old War Machines - Into The Breach 4. Antiquity Row - Into The Breach When i have to say who teached me to play bass at highest levels i always mention you. Went from knowing nothing to being very professional at it just playing your videos for just a couple of months. You Rock!

I think he also tuned down his E string down to Eb but kept the rest in standard?
Plus, the 8v preamp in a stingray is itself a compressor
Actually Levin used a Sabre (two pickup bass) the "Classic albums" documentary revealed it as such.
@@RastaSaiyaman A high quality version of that video just popped up, it's actually surprisingly a fretless Cutlass 2 bass!
Its def tuned down

@@SegaGenesis92 chords and modes was right. OP is referring to things like "Eb (Mixolydian)" like at 1:20
One of your best covers. Tone was plenty sufficient. Hard to nail Levin’s exact tone on this one. Bravo!

@BrantheBroken It was fretless too.
Plenty sufficient. Profusely adequate! Terminally ordinary!
This bass riff has taken over my mind, it’s insanely funky

@@andrewhigdon8346 This has to be the most gatekeeping bs I've seen in years. I appreciate your description of the sledgehammer feel, but...no.
@andrewhigdon8346 funk or not, there's some good groove here that makes people of every color move. I've seen it first hand. Calm down dude.
Man, talk seriously... how in the world would anyone create a bass line like this genius song line! Unbelievable!
Finally!!! I don't know how a bass channel could go this long without doing this song

I don't know how close the tone is to the original song, but I personally really enjoy it!

IMO, one of the greatest recorded bass lines ever.
As others have said, it’s hard to nail Tony Levin’s tone, but you did a fantastic job. One of my all time favourite songs, congrats!
One of the best basslines ever! Thanks for this. Great playing as always 👍🏻
Tony Levin is one of my favorite bassists, this is so good!
I liked the tone a lot during the choruses and any time you were playing the low end sections. Good video as always!

I like the way the bass sounds. I don't know if it sounds like the recording but it's a cool tone.
The entire song is straight funk. Thanks for isolating this track. Tony Levin would approve.
Can't like this enough! Tony Levin is a master
As a new bass player this is giving me such inspiration! Can’t wait to get into it!
Crazy thing I noticed from live footage, Levin plays primarily with upstrokes. Amazing cover.
Thx, you're my savior - I didn't get by ear the "tricky" lick , and got to play the track in a few days with my band !
The one and only Tony Levin. It'd be awesome to see you do some his stuff from King Crimson! "People" is a pretty funky fun bassline to play!
I beg you please do "digging in the dirt". Love 4 the effort man! Thank you so much, best bass tab channel period.
Excelente Cover. Me hace recordar el video de esta canción los efectos revolucionarios para esa época
Such a great bass sound!

Despite you not being happy with the tone, I thought it was incredible and added a bit of niche flair to an already great song. Nice work!
Such a great bass line, Tony Levin is a bass genius definitely!! ✌️😁
Hell yeah! Been wanting to learn this one.
FANTASTIC!!!! THANKS A LOT FROM VENEZUELA.....

As you are using an octaviser (down one) and I'm playing a 5 string without one, I'm doing this down one octave with the Eb on the B string.

Could you play a cover of Limelight from Rush please? This was a great one for sure!
Hola, grandioso cover. Podrías sacar el tema kotikonnut de korpiklaani. Te mando saludos desde Chile :D
A good compression setting for this is a attack at fast as possible, extremely high ratio. With a compression sustainer, sustain at max

In the outro, the i chord in that song are an Ebm7 chord, don't know why you suggest this is a Eb major chord when it's a minor 7 chord.
Wow
Fun fact: Sledgehammer is Harry Styles’s favourite song. He even played it on the Howard Stern show, and _my god,_ is it accurate.
