  • Growing a great crop of Sweet Corn is dependent on three things: pollination, water and fertilization. Therefore, all three are essential in growing the best sweet corn.

      Glad y'all had a great corn year. Good luck with the field peas. It has become almost impossible to grow them down here because of the insect pressure.

    Good videos. I just found them today. When you plant in blocks, what is the spacing between rows?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  6 лет назад

      Typically corn is planted on 30" or 36" row spacings. Thanks for watching !

      Drip tape is a MUST for us on corn. Saves so much water and time.

  • @billlaut608
    @billlaut608 5 лет назад +1

    How close do you bury the drip tape next to the corn seeds? Judging from the video, it almost looked like you were planting the corn directly above the drip tape! Also, are all varieties of corn fertilized by the wind, or just sweet corn?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 лет назад +2

      We bury the drip tape and then plant DIRECTLY on top of it with our Garden Seeder. All corn is wind-pollinated, that's why planting in a square is so important.

    If you collect your corn when the plant is still green you can use the plants as green manure.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  6 лет назад +1

      Great point! You can use a flail mower like you see in this video to make green manure out of the stalks: ruclips.net/video/xsbRrdnqFB8/видео.html

    I've heard that corn really only needs nitrogen to grow well, so why the 20-20-20 and not just 20-0-0?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  2 года назад +1

      Wrong, corn needs several nutrients to grow well. It does need allot of nitrogen, Up to 8 units per 1000 sq. ft.

      @@gardeningwithhoss Ok, I have a 200sqft area I'm going to try and grow sweet corn in this spring but my soil report came back as 122 phosphorus index and 20 potassium index with a PH of 5.4. What is the optimum PH and potassium levels for corn, since I don't think I'll be needed to add any phosphorus

    How often do you fertilize? I can’t plant in squares and just have a couple long rows So I just hand pollinate right?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 лет назад +1

      We fertilize corn at least every two weeks. They like lots of nitrogen. You could take a stick and brush across the male flowers to help pollination.

  • @mattc4581

    How far apart are your rows and plants

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  6 лет назад +1

      Sweet corn is usually planted with rows 30" - 36" apart. The in-row spacing will depend on how much water you have. Using drip irrigation, you can plant it as close as 6". If you are using overhead watering, it's harder to deliver water to the plants. So you might want to do 8" - 12" in-row spacing in that case.

    So he said 35 years he's only grown four different varieties? Maple sugar hybrid.. sugar bun.. way too sweet makes you sick of corn!! Silver King can't even afford to buy the damn seeds anymore!! AMBROSIA ALL AROUND BEST! Bodacious is good but not so sweet. The makers of peaches and cream are robbing people used to be sweet! Honey and cream is garbage. Serendipity is super duper sweet but low germination rate. Candy King. (Not candy corn) can't even get the seeds anymore they cancel my orders when I order.. incredible variety. It's good if you got lots of nitrogen that sweetens corn! But you got to have the water and I flood irrigate every 6 days plus a couple. I could double this comment for all the varieties and things that I do to make the super corn I grow I hope. My life is on the thread about ready to die.....

      @@gardeningwithhoss Maple sugar hybrid. Ears are small and fat. Kernels are a little less tender. But as the package and the supplier said sugar levels beyond belief! I didn't buy any new seed this year. But I am trying to germinate second generation. Have not been successful yet? I pre germinate and I think I got 1 1/2 out of 150 seeds! But I think I didn't save my seed right..got wet and dry too many times?
