Here it is 9 months later, Feb -13, 2021...after you posted this video, and I'm in N.E. Oklahoma waiting on the arrival of 3 to 10" of snow throughout the weekend.
Yet next weekend, it begins to get upwards into the high 50's, with about a five degree increase in the temperature every other day.
With that said, I'm enjoying a dual retirement along with 20 acres to begin my 'Dream Garden' on a 60' x 120' designated plot, and I will be following your professional suggestions,
along with the early childhood garden teachings from the days-gone-by' back in South Carolina.
I'm roaring and ready to go, brother.

Hello, in mid state NY i plant 2 varieties of sweetcorn. Silver Queen, Kandy corn. Late maturing. I succession plant roughly every 2-3 weeks. Keeping wildlife out of gardens is biggest issue i have. Deer, Raccoon are culprits. I get a little cross pollination with both varieties planted next to eachother but not a issue..both are very sweet to eat. I side dress with organic nitrogen fertilizer and hill each row with tiller. We get windy thunderstorms that will flatten corn if not hilled.

You asked about successive planting, I put plastic down on early tilled soil, have access to slightly used greenhouse plastic, reason, it heats the soil sprouts weeds , solorizes and kills the tender weed starts, I got it in about 3 weeks earlier, then covered again till I saw the green shoots come thru, then I planted in blocks for pollinating, and every 3 weeks apart, did about 6 plantings, some falls it didn't mature the last batch, not often.
It gave me corn for the fruit stand, and always was short.
I didn't worry about cross pollination, as I didn't save seed.
That was in Canada in the farming days, now in AZ I grow mostly Hopi corn, and a eating corn, here our issue is about heat, about the time it's tassel time it gets to hot, thus the Hopi corn, more heat adapted, make lots of things with it, starting when milk stage we steam it like the Natives do, and dry it, as well harvest some a wrinkle stage, makes awesome corn meal.
It is just a hobby know but so much fun, here it isn't March yet and it's showing green, cover with frost cloth, did that today, as going down to just freezing, so we do our best. So much fun to have 2 gardening seasons.
Morgan County is great prices, shipping is aweful, I get my cover crop stuff from Outsidepride. They have the best prices, and don't gouge on shipping, look at their seeds, awesome selection too.

on the farm the years we planted field corn we would plant the last 4 rows at the edge with sweet corn, these rows were 1/4 mile long. lol we always had plenty of sweet corn to can or freeze

Can y'all talk about ideas of where and how to find bulk compost sources on the next Row By Row?
Seems like we answered that question on a previous show. Most compost makers are not online, so the best way to find them is word of mouth. If you have any cotton gins nearby, always good to check with them. Any chicken farmers or dairy farmers are other good options.
Clint- check craigslist for your area. Just search manure or compost in the for sale or community section. Most horse farms are giving horse manure away for free. Also, check livestock farms in your area. Many of them are overloaded with manure and are happy to get rid of it. Even if it is too fresh to use, you can compost it yourself and then use it. As far as professional compost, it is difficult to find. I found two suppliers in my area and it is not cheap. I paid over $40/yard for leaf-gro, which is a local compost. Great stuff, but not cheap. Don't use the free compost made at your local dump/municipal sanitation place. You have no idea what went into it.
@@valh9858 I can get plenty of chicken manure and make my own over time. What I'm looking for are ideas on finding ready to go compost by the ton.
I know it's been a while but the best compost for me in bulk was from my local nursery. Look for one that sales rocks mulch soil etc for commercial and retail use.
@@valh9858 Beware horse manure if not thoroughly composted. Used horse manure on a garden plot and ruined it with weeds, everthing from bermuda grass to crabgrass to pig weed to scattered coffee weed. I found out later that horses do not "process" seed in their digestive system like cows do, therefore the weed problem I'm still dealing with. Before the introduction of the horse manure there wasn't a pig weed or coffee weed on the place, let alone in the garden.
Great video. Good info. One of the 3 garden channels I watch every video. First backyard garden, in town, for me so my space is limited but I planted your temptress seeds with all seeds germinating. 2 weeks ago, and now 4-6inches tall. Planted 2 weeks after your peaches and cream seed which had about 80%germ rate. (We did have a blip of 90-95 degree days when I planted so I reseeded the blank spots a week after original and all is good) zone 9b mojave desert. Can't wait for the dewlictable and halo canary melon seed to arrive Friday. Seeds will be in the ground before Friday is over. Thank you again for great seed delivery and informative vids on the seeds you sell.

I have 3 varieties in the ground, all coming up nicely. Bloody Butcher Dent, Cherokee Gourdseed and Silver Queen Sweet. I'll be adding a 4th variety in succession soon... "Temptress" that I got from you all a couple of weeks ago. I am really looking forward to seeing how that turns out!!

Intercrop with Diakon, saleable and great drill for penetration. In Arizona we deal with caliche, mine isn't solid so it goes down well.
I always plant silver queen corn love it but I’m always up for trying a new kind I’m in South Carolina I have to use a lot of compost too and blood meal but corn doing good so far 😎
You should try one of the sweeter varieties. The longer storage ability is definitely a plus if you're not able to process it all at one time.

Travis - you could attach a little manure spreader to that UTV and use it to spread your compost. I have one that attaches to my ATV with a trailer ball. I am definitely growing Avalon next year! I don't know how you take that heat. Good lord. It was 80 here the other day and I thought I'd die.
80 is nice. When it gets in the high 90s, that's when you have be careful because that bear will get you.
I so wish I had room for corn.

I love really sweet corn.
And btw, that micro boost I bought from ya'll well I side dressed my tomatoes with some triple 13 and gave them a healthy dose of micro boost.
Even with all the weird weather here they look really great.
We'll see in another month how they are doing but so far they are pretty.

I hear corn grow well in containers small spaces
I am in South Carolina and received some sweet corn from friends in Nebraska last month. We don't have the size garden you have but we did plant 7 rows one foot apart, 20 feet long and put a seed every 8 inches in each row. I read several articles and tried to learn how to plant it before we planted it. We planted ours on April 29th so just about 3 weeks ago. It is doing great! We will be planting another 7 rows in about 3 more weeks. We will be staying with the same kind of sweet corn we received from Nebraska we were afraid of cross pollinating if that is even possible with corn, we are new at gardening and we were not sure. Your corn looks amazing!!! Happy Gardening. Any tips?

Next time you till, you planning on adding some gypsum and Vermiculite? I found that helped the hard clay here in Tennessee.
We have sprinkled gypsum on these plots from time to time. But at $20 a ton, this compost seems to be working pretty well.

@@barrydarnell9748 Tried Safari and Mozilla. Both load the top-level website pages. I cam click 'GAREN TOOLS' to see the menu. If I click 'LONG HANDLE TOOLS' that page loads normally. If I choose 'SHORT HANDLE TOOLS' I get a ' Forbidden' message and a white page that says the page can't be accessed. It did the same thing when I tried to get the corn. I could load the menu for seeds. I could choose CORN (SWEET), I found that variety, but when I chose it, the page gave the same message. .... Its no hardship for me. Just trying to help you!

Try clearing your cookies and history. Could be that your browser is trying to index an older version of the site. We did have to make some plumbing changes recently to upgrade our server.
I’d like to get a Hoss Seeder one day. I have an EarthWay 1001-B seeder and it’s been good.
For my sweet corn i like g90. It done great last year. I want to do a good canning corn this year, like what you would put in veggie soup. Not to cream. Can you reccommend a good one? Thanks

That sure did drive home the difference some compost makes vs fertilizer..looks like next year I'm going to need a ton or so myself. I tilled a 30x66 2000ft or so garden this year..
Fertilizer helps, but you have to start with decent soil or else all the fertilizer in the world doesn't seem to make a big difference.

I remember you saying in a prior video that when it comes to tilling, it is good to wait a week or two after having done so before planting as the soil will then be more compacted, and when it's more compacted you get better contact with the seeds which increases germination. Will watering in your compost help to do the same with less waiting between tilling and planting? Thank you for all that you do.

How did you keep the bugs off of the collards? Were they on drip tape as well? What month did you plant fall corn?
We use the product in the link below. Yes they were on drip tape. For the fall corn, look at the first frost date for your zone and subtract the days to maturity for the variety you are planting, plus a week or so for harvesting.
Two things, one do you move a hose from plot to plot, and two do you plant by the almanac.

Do you know if its possible to make a bicolor corn out of Golden bantam heirloom and Hayes white sweet corn if you plant them in the same row like one seed Golden Bantam and then your next seed Hayes white sweet corn and keep doing that all the way down the row?
Mom used gypsum to loosen up clay soil. We have part loam and part clay, hard enough. Have you tried gypsum?

What I started doing is to soak the seeds like a day or so until the size of the swollen kernel fits properly into my holes and seed plate then into the earth. What ya think?!
If it works for you, then go for it.
Why burn pile, I chop the stock of ground level, let the worms feed on the roots, aereates the soil, moisten can go down too, our chickens are the burn pile, they recycle nicely.

I bought this seed and planted a month ago and not one stalk of corn come up. Planted another patch about 100’ away of silver queen and it came up in 7 days and is doing great. Did I get bad seed? I was looking forward to trying the Temptress but pretty disappointed
We test our seed frequently and do not sell if they do not meet our standards for germination. We've learned though, to never say never. If you will contact customer service, we will send you some replacements.

Haha. That was Honey Select, which is a yellow TripleSweet. It is really good too. But this is the first time we've grown this QuadSweet corn.
Hi don't you have a problem with bud worms and corn ear worms with your late corn crops,and how do you avoid them or treat for them?

Did you plant on top or just to one side of the drip tape? Would 6 inch drip spacing be better for corn? How deep do you place the tape for corn?
12 inch emitter spacing is the industry standard. I bury it 2-3 inches.
Hey! Do you think leaf compost is sufficient to amend garden soil that was just a grass yard? Or would it be better to invest in a more expensive compost? I found a place with a great price for 20yds but I’m beginning to second guess my decision after talking to a place with more expensive and “guaranteed” compost.
Depends on what you can do. The "expensive" compost is likely to be much better, but do what works for your budget.

I live in MN...trying succession planting for first time. Planted 3 rows sweet corn 2 1/2 weeks ago, then planted 3 rows last Friday. What's the best method to hill sweet corn if I don't have the special hoe to get both sides at the same time?
Just a hard garden rake will do.
Hi Travis I from Central CA, zone 9. I have very sandy soil and so I do put in compost. Anything else that I should do before planting corn?
I would suggest composting heavily if you access to it.
Curious would you plant corn in a plot after harvesting potatoes and if so any tips?
Sure. That would work great. Potatoes are not really heavy feeders, so following with corn would be good. Just make sure you remove all the potato plants so that you don't have any possible diseases left in the soil.
Travis, where do you get your compost and how much does it cost. It looks like really good compost.
We get it from a local cotton gin. Pretty cheap at $18 a ton.

I bought some incredible sweet corn variety that I have not planted as yet. Am form Jamaica and my agriculture field officer is say that not all variety does well here what your take on that because I really scared of loosing my money

Hi, thank you for another great video. Really appreciate your sharing info with us all on here. I have a question about fertilizer injectors. You've mentioned a few times that you hook it to your drip tape. I'm curious which type of infuser you use. I've seen some smaller ones that just hook in the hose line, some that have a gallon bottle attached, and some that you can place the intake in a bucket. I'm new to drip tape, but all of them seem to have either overwhelmingly bad reviews, or absolute raving "best product ever made" reviews. I pilfered your videos for a while hoping to see what you use, as you clearly have success. I did see the little black inline container on your new line in this video, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to spot if that was a debris filter, or a fertilizer syphon. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks again!

You should try one of those TripleSweets. They germinate well and grow fast!
Hoss Tools I told my dad that and he wanted me to get the silver queen so I ordered it I’m gona plant 2 per hole I think. He told me to plant two per hole and let them both grow, do you think it will do well with two plants per hole? Iv been dumping compost dirt down my rows and tilling it in getting it ready so I hope that helps with my triple 8 and I’m gona do my research to see if I need to put my calcium nitrate on it!

Travis is this a Grillo tractor? If it is one you had it in 4th gear, looks great. I just purchased a new Grillo 107D, makes the garden prep easy.
It is a Grillo. But we just sped up the footage. We till in 1st gear and transport in 2nd. That top gear is too fast for anything

Haha. I think they use them as transportation in Europe. That's the only reason I can imagine for those higher gears.
You don't compost the the stalks or feed to live stalk but burn them instead?
We don't own any livestock. And we don't make our own compost because it would be tough to turn and wet that much compost for the scale we require. So we put most plant debris in the burn pile.

That can happen when it gets warm. If it's in a permanent bed, you can leave it to reseed itself. If not, just pull it up and use what you can.

Like I mentioned in the video, it has all three kernel types on one ear. So it's sweet, but also has a great corn flavor.

If you're wanting to use the wheel hoe to make a furrow for planting the corn, you can put a single cultivator tooth on there and make a nice, shallow planting furrow.

Do you ever plant field corn? I remember when my father in law would plant in north Florida panhandle in Altha FL and was so different from sweet corn which is great but I prefer field corn. We don’t have the space to grow corn but have planted for the first time an Urban Garden just because of the time we ate in with this virus thinking food is going to be scarce. We can’t grow grass at our home so garden it is. I am interested in purchasing corn a 100 to 200 ears at a time to put in freezer. Any suggestions? Hoss Tools I am wanting field corn when ready to harvest. I know there is a small window as it will harden very fast. I would like 200 ears at a time as I am 60 years old and don’t move as fast anymore.

I plant 4 times every 3 weeks in 6b starting 5/1 end by fourth of July. planting after that gets eaten by bugs. usually 4 different kinds, early bicolor, late bicolor, yellow, and a white and all separated quite a bit by distance. Doesn't triple sweet NOT need to be isolated? Quad? if I do popcorn it takes one of these slots. weather blocked 5/1 plant so only getting 3 this year.
Correct. TripleSweet doesn't need to be isolated. Same thing with the QuadSweet as it contains all three kernel types.

The description say I dont need to isolate another variety (Silver King) due to the Temptress being a quad-sweet. Is this accurate?

That was a nickname given to Greg, our owner, way back before he decided to start a garden tool company.
Do you market garden?
Yes we do. We have a weekly vegetable bag operation where we sell some of our produce. It's kind of like a CSA, but we don't require payment up front. It's a week to week deal.
