Not that anyone asked for it but I never understood singlespeeds (and later fixed) until I had to borrow one for mountain biking. I came out of serious depression with heavy medications and doctors that refused to recommend me to a therapist and it left a lot of problems no one professional would help me tackle. I was being constantly reminded I was broken and needed meds to make me human, and I had to report to others to prove I wasn't a danger to myself. On top of that I had to pay for it all, basically seeing myself as sub-human paying for the right to be with normal people. It was total bullshit, and I know that now... Fast forward to that singlespeed rigid mtb I spun my lungs out until I came to an infamous uphill switchback that I decided to say fuck it and hit as hard as I could. It was a revelation to say the least, no waiting on someone else just mash and make it happen, and when I got to the top I knew it was all me, nothing helped me up that hill but my own determination. Now I ride fixed brakeless on centuries and shoot for pr's the faster riders couldn't dream of on their carbon Di2 rigs. Way healthier now too life's been great and I owe a lot of it to dropping the extras and seeing how far I can go with simplicity.
We all started on a single speed bmx , some of the best memories of my life riding around with friends as a youngster going every where on the bikes 😁👍🚲
My local golf course was my own personal bmx track. I know it so well from those days that I can still cycle around as an adult it in the dark without ending up in a bunker.
I built mine up from a old road bike, custom did the frame and everything, practiced with the front brake ,removed the front brake and God now I love fixed gears. Also my family thinks I'm crazy and they're not wrong. Lol
bombing hills on a fixed gear is also way more fun. google maps sent me down sackville street on my brakeless build and it was the most fun/ dumbest experience in a long time
@akukromanti7260 hello mine also came in a single speed I have it in my storage I think you will need to buy a fixed gear cog and lock ring there should be a freewheel hub thread on the other side if I remember
Completely get that! Bought an old beat up pos State fixie about a year and a half ago. Tuned up the drive train and have been on it ever since. There’s just something about cracking up to speed and feeling the bike contribute to maintaining it, cruising down hill a little slower & safer 8:07 and torquing up hill and knowing it all me. Nice to have had only one flat in that time when I used to have them all the time, sometimes two in one ride. 😤 Just treated myself to the new State 4130 with the fat 38 tires. So smooth, so solid and surprisingly fast. On smooth tarmac it feels like flying. 👍👍👍😎
Climbing on a fixed gear is always about being in the wrong gear. That’s the whole challenge and where the fun comes from. I won’t ever give up my fixed gear dude. Love your content, it always brings a smile to my face.
I have a Giant Contend 2017 I put 5000 miles on it then turned it into a single speed, it was great. Then I put some bmx bars on it, so much fun so light so large! Now I have a pair of flat bars a pair of drops and bmx bars all set up with the right brake cable length. One bike single speed and it can be 3 completely different bikes in two minutes!!!!! Please if you haven’t yet, put some bmx bars on that fixie just to see how it feels you will love it 😻
I ride single speed freewheel, riding fixed just makes me miss coasting too much. I also feel way more confident on sharp turns & uneven ground because I can avoid pedal strike much easier. That said I do miss being able to brake/slow down with my legs & staying upright while stopped is way easier on fixed.
Thinking about buying my first single speed/fixie but now you’re making me want to just build one myself. Only problem I know nothing about good brands, and I too am a bmx head.
I like your attitude on biking. KISS(keep it simple solution). I grew up with a Schwinn single speed and rode it everywhere. I bought for my wife a single speed beach bike but because of health reason cannot ride it. So I now have a single speed bike.
This might be my favorite video yet! Reminded me of my days staring at fancy road bikes at Cyclesmith on Quinpool while riding a 30 year old ten-speed every day.
I converted my 1967 Claud Butler to single speed by dismantling the 5-speed block and putting the cog i wanted in the middle CHEAP 😃. Love riding it you can feel the extra efficiency of the drive train
I've always loved single speed, something about being able to just get on and go without shifting i've always loved. While I have a hybrid bike that I love to bits, I still have my complaints about having to gear down or up to make any change in speed, where as with a single speed if I want more speed I pedal faster lol. Great videos!
I was 15 living in Upstate NY. Rode country roads, up and down mountain ish style grades, all on a single speed. And thank god, one time I lost a chain link, about 10 miles from home. Took the bread time from my sandwich baggie (ziplock was too expensive 😉) and used that to get myself home. It worked so well that i added two more when I got home and rode it that way for about a week before it finally broke. Point is, I doubt that would’ve worked with a multi speed bicycle.
I like your thinking, i always wanted to have a road bike but I hated how overinflated the price was, I build one out of a very simple mtb with cheap parts and it works as well as an entry level road bike for significantly lower cost
I have that same Schwinn Stites bike but when I purchased it, it didn't come with reversible back sprocket. Did yours come with two back sprockets or did you have to turn the sprocket around to make it a fixie?
this same thing happened to me. grew up with bmx and tinkering with bmx bikes, wanted to get a 700c bike to get around town on, so i bought a SE Draft Lite single speed, 6 years later, its still my main rig. if where you live is relatively flat, then just stick to them roots! single speedftw! :D
Wrong. Why eat cheeseburgers for every meal for the rest of your life? Why go around the same corner the same way for the rest of your life? There's 200 ways to go around the same corner. You're either conservative or you hurt yourself by serverly limiting your choices.
You can also leave them locked outside of bars overnight, and not worry about something "expensive" getting stolen. They are beater bikes, and you can treat them as such (build dependent).
My reasons (42 yo, female): simplicity. No-fuss. Don't ride long distances, don't ride too fast. Just everyday commuting. So what would I need all those gears for? Or the next thing to break? Or the extra weight. One "summer" bike - light, build on an old road bike frame. And one heavy-duty winter with wider tires, mudguards and so on.
If you live in the country, low gears are necessary to clean very steep hills, one gear, especially if your gear ratio is on the high side will prevent finishing steep hills; for a medium hill one gear is fine if your legs are strong and your climbing technique is good. I learned my single speed skills on a mountain bike which had riser bars. I have drop bars on my fixed gear You learn a technique where you stand on the pedals& pull back on one side of the bar while pushing down with the opposite pedal. If you have good foot retention to the pedals. You can also pull up with other pedal for more power. That is a disputed proposition , but the steeper the hill the better it works IME. Everyone must learn for themselves but I’m a strong proponent of clipless pedals and an “upstroke” while climbing for the average rider. riders who grew up on BMX with flat pedals have skills that pretty much must be learned when you are young. Don’t try to imitate them if you are mature.
I just love my single and fixed. I use my single so I can go crazy top end. (personal best 44.3mph) On my fixed I have no breaks so I'm more cautious, it's so much fun skidding etc on it. To be honest I bought A-Works road bike and rarely use it.
I am in a lane of my own maybe, I'm 340 lbs fresh off multiple knee surgeries just got out my brace and I can climb some pretty damn steep hills at about a. Brisk walking pace.
All of that is reason why I'm trying to find a single speed fixed gear bike now. But I'm short like 5'4 5'5 short so finding a cheap one is proving more difficult than I thought it would be. Doesn't help most bike shops are sold out of most everything right now also.
The mountains dont disallow it. Lacking the heart, lungs and legs disallow it. Loads of gear ratios to choose from. Just got to want to. Not for everybody obviously but I dig it. Nothing wrong with a geared bike its just a different kick. Variety is where its at.
I'm looking into getting a fixie for winter and I'm having a hard time doing so, anyone have some recommendations for how to ride in the winter, like true winters, I live where we sometimes get a foot of snow in a blizzard. I'm thinking of getting the bike you showed in this video, or something 2nd hand. But there is nothing for fixies 2nd hand that I've found so far. Also, ty spindatt for making these videos, my bro who recently moved to Texas and is working at a bike shop watches your videos too and showed me your channel!
Love your content dude ! I've always wondered how you get proper decals for your bike, and the best way to put them on the frame. Like you have the Cadence decal, which looks awesome ! Maybe an idea for some content ? Thanks again !
Does it matter to you whether to use bike grips or gel wrapping tape for your handle bar.It sounds like all these single gear bikes are less than $1,000.00 in price... I thought I heard there is a large club of single gear cyclist, is this true??
Just got myself my first fixed gear after not owning a bike in 17 years today (BMX in my younger days). Definitely a learning curve. Not use to thin tires and saw a patch of sand on this little twisted turn, freaked out because my legs keep moving, forgot about the brake and road into some grass on a bank thinking these rims are about to snap in half on my first ride. All good though, really love it.
I ride a fixie for everything except cargo hauling and touring, and the primary reason for it isn't the price, or the simplicity, or this 'connection with the road' I keep hearing about. I just ride a fixie because I find it more fun, and that's a good enough reason for me.
I just recently got into biking, went on Craigslist and wanted a single speed, I don’t want to have to switch gears and I want the exercise. Found a nice specialized stump jumper fixed gear and I love it 😘
I love my fixed gear bike but I still want to convert it to single speed. Sometimes I feel like I do a lot of extra work on my commute, coasting is more convenient. I will make a flip-flop wheel ofc, fixie is fun I just love doing skids and trackstands.
I agree! It is fun to have both options. I’ve not done a lot of swapping between the two, but there are definitely morning that I yearn to coast if I did take a fixed gear in to work baha
I'm currently on my third single speed(track frames no conversions) and I feel the same. 100% understand the benefit of gears and brakes, but I'm always thinking in my head.. "why do I need to buy that? Just get stronger , ya bum" lol
I have been riding a geared road bike for years. A few months ago I purchased an inexpensive fixed gear bike with the sole purpose of becoming a stronger cyclist. I have fallen in love with riding fixed and ride it more often than my road bike.
police auction 18yrs old, picked up a ROSS 10 speed for $20. Road it for at least a 1000 miles while in college. Used bikes are inexpensive if know where to look. Easy one is go to local Church, tell them your situation and dollars to donuts someone in congregation will donate their old bike. Hey just did a 10 sec search and came up with "Ross "Eurotour", 27", 10-speed, $65".
Question: Has anyone else noticed that their SS feels more efficient or just somehow better to ride than their geared bike for the same gear ratio? I have a cheap road bike I converted to SS, and a nicer geared road bike, and for some reason on the SS the ride just feels really really good. I've checked to make sure brakes aren't dragging, I've checked the drivetrain on the geared bike, I've lubed the chain, I've swapped the wheels/tires between the two bikes. The only thing I can think of is either the BB is somehow dragging, or there's just something mental about the SS and not having easier gear options. Thoughts?
Most definitely feel the momentum continue after punching up to a good speed and getting back down on the saddle. I ride with no straps and flip flops and work the pedals back with my toes and forward with my quads. It’s such a complete workout for the legs, and the hard climbs just engage your whole body. I think if I were to torque my carbon road bike that hard I’d break it. Bought a used State fixed gear for $100 and have not ridden anything else since and it’s been 6 months. Absolutely LOVE IT!!!
I like fixed gear with brakes, because its much easier and safer to slipstream that way. So much fun when you see people climbing uphill, and you just fly by them slipstreaming behind a bus
I’m looking into getting a fixed gear and was wondering if it makes a difference whether the bike has a steel frame or an aluminum frame? Hoping someone can share their thoughts!
super interesting so a fixed gear would be the step between changing from a bmx to a road bike. What do you think about coaster brake ? Some friend of mine bought fixed gear thinking it would be the coaster brake system (similarly as you started with a bmx to go to a fixed gear). Anyway thanks for the content this was a great video, love you take care.
I believe, cyclists divide into ones who can ride without backpedaling and ones who just can't. In this sense, FG and CB are similar....to an extent, as on FG one can backpedal at times.
@@event4216 I have no experience with fixed gear how can it backpedal if the rear wheel is indexed on your front crank without a freewheeling mechanism?
@@shujin7024 I wrote "at times", meaning zero speed, which would result in riding backwards. I didn't mean backpedaling in a sense of freewheel bc there's no real backpedaling on FG while in motion, but there's similar leg reflex - to brake with rear, stop pedaling and push against the pedals. Of course, FG isn't as cooperative as CB is to legs.
@@event4216 thanks I understand now :D yeah I need more experience with those two type of system I'm personally only used to regular road bikes with road shifters.
Can you please tell me both wheel and tyre sizes? I also ride fixie, but in my town on my wheels it’s a hell! And yours seems a little bit softer to ride...
Fixies are usually 700c wheels, he mentioned 28mm wide tires during that one cyclocross race. If you want a softer ride, you can try and see if 650b wheels and tires fit in your frame. Those wheels are usually paired with bigger tires and it’ll help with absorbing bumps better
You can coast on FG bike as well. Just let your feet move on with pedals but don't apply pressure, so effectively you are resting at that time. Well, it's very close to coasting without really coasting.

This bike was really easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
Hi Jokim nice story I ride fixed only ride style is ride barefoot and ride the wave ...the best feature is I don't get lactose problem in my legs due to constant leg movements in constant motion but not constant load which means you legs can be under light tourk which refreshes leg pain quickly whilst in motion that s why I think fixie is the king of bikes the original bike of your d France thanks for video 🐝👍👣
I’m new to this kinda , I live in Australia and I was just wondering if someone could help me out with a cheaper brand I have the budget of around $350. If someone could link me to a good website or local shop in Melbourne thanks

I did literally the exact opposite 🙂 I put gears on my BMX with parts from one of my dads old 10 speed bikes. I bike to work (weather and personal fortitude permitting) whenever possible and love the idea of a single speed, I may pull the trigger next year if I get the opportunity. Fixed gear?......that’s laughable for me, I’m a complete klutz and refuse to give my wife the satisfaction of seeing me limp home from a wreck.....again. Thanks for sharing yourself with us and the music, excellent music 🍺🍺
When I was younger on my 12 ton mongoose I was king. Mid-late 00s on a golden bike(eventually got a 3 spoke black wheel in front) WITH working breaks? Pfft king of the block. B)
nice video bro im the same as yyou and love how you explain things love you bro love fron philippines always ridefsafe and have a goodtime. new subs here :)
I did it for a customer once at the shop, but it was a single speed cog specific hub, so it didn’t look weird nor were the spoke tensions off by too much. I’d be hesitant to bolt a cog to a 10 speed disk hub haha
Spindatt I did it, it works fine for now. Not sure how it would last long term but I’ve taken it on mtb trails and it did ok. I got the 16 tooth Origen8 cog off amazon if your curious
Damn damn, I'm permanently returning to idea of ss/fg only bc I rode ss bike in my early youth. But now when I could have fancy geared bike I like idea of minimalism and lightness. Autumn is a good time to shop for or build a bike.
@@Spindatt I almost decided on this but found complete bike - Maze Tracker. Cromo frame, not sure if I like hi profile wheels , but luckily not colored and I like riser bars (risers or bulls would be my choice, anyway). Price is about right - building such from scratch would cost me more, unless I start with old frame. I realize build is a pleasure on its own, though. I'd maybe go for lighter wheels and different tires.
Ha, yeah I remember taking my BMX off homemade jumps, single speed of course, Wal-Mart special, it was still in good shape until we gave it away to a kid a couple years ago. It was about 15 years old. Just about done revamping my hardtail now, swapped it to a 1x8, hollowtech, about to change the fork and basically the whole cockpit. Keeping my cane creek headset though. It's still going strong, almost nine years old on the same grease. Probably will update the grease finally though.

The Internet destroys gossip.
Fixed gears are great for climbs, as long as you are fit enough and have the right gear ratio.
What's wrong with ropes for climbs?
Maybe ropes are on the ropes now that cycling is here.
What happened to gear context?
Obviously
reasons I'll accept: it was the cheapest option, mechanically simple, can ride backwards, being a track cyclist.

24 fixed gears.
10 fixed gears.
That's like 50 times more honest than the regular fixie circlejerk narrative and 50 times more convincing as well

Wow I just bought a schwinn Stites and saw this video... I can wait to go ride and throw the bicycle around first time riding a fixed gear 👍
Did you have to switch your back sprocket around? Mines came in single speed but the site i purchased it from advertised it as a fixie/single speed.

The more I watch your channel the more I wanna build my own fixed gear bike. Maybe next summer I will for sure.
Sticky fingers music really adds something to the fixie vibe
I love the honesty
I just recently got into biking, went on Craigslist and wanted a single speed, I don’t want to have to switch gears and I want the exercise. Found a nice specialized stump jumper fixed gear and I love it 😘
Watching a spindatt video is a cool feeling 😎👍
I love my fixed gear bike but I still want to convert it to single speed. Sometimes I feel like I do a lot of extra work on my commute, coasting is more convenient. I will make a flip-flop wheel ofc, fixie is fun I just love doing skids and trackstands.
I agree! It is fun to have both options. I’ve not done a lot of swapping between the two, but there are definitely morning that I yearn to coast if I did take a fixed gear in to work baha
Single speed coaster hub is the best for a city commuter.
I'm currently on my third single speed(track frames no conversions) and I feel the same. 100% understand the benefit of gears and brakes, but I'm always thinking in my head.. "why do I need to buy that? Just get stronger , ya bum" lol
Does your bike not have brakes? How is that not very dangerous?
How good is a fixie going up the hill?
yes
how strong are your legs?
How do your tires not get punctured though?!
the same ironic example of why i like stick shift cars
You don't need to whip yourself.
Get a car that has a diff that makes noise.
Very cool clip......makes total sense!!
I hope Schwinn is paying for all those bikes. You’re the only person I know of riding them.
Agreed! Though I’m a little bias
No cross this year?
I’m only planning on doing one race this year. It’s next week actually!
Just got this bike and I’ll keep it as a coaster. I like to rest my legs a lot at times lol.
New bikes give you choices.
I have been riding a geared road bike for years. A few months ago I purchased an inexpensive fixed gear bike with the sole purpose of becoming a stronger cyclist. I have fallen in love with riding fixed and ride it more often than my road bike.
Here in London (England not Ontario) the single speed scene is huge. Check out Brick Lane Bikes.
Hipster.
@@ronwhite8503 yeah, I suppose they do go hand in hand to a point, I am not one though
Though I have nothing against full-facial coverage lol.
police auction 18yrs old, picked up a ROSS 10 speed for $20.
I got hooked after I watched the film "Fixation"
@@tonymartino7892 which model state?
I like fixed gear with brakes, because its much easier and safer to slipstream that way. So much fun when you see people climbing uphill, and you just fly by them slipstreaming behind a bus
I’m looking into getting a fixed gear and was wondering if it makes a difference whether the bike has a steel frame or an aluminum frame? Hoping someone can share their thoughts!
No
aluminum is lighter so it's faster while steel is more rigid so it handles sharper
Tried fixed and did not like it. But I went to single speed and like it.
super interesting so a fixed gear would be the step between changing from a bmx to a road bike.
Multi Geared and single speed I like to ride and to coast with the momentum I have going. Fixed gear was not for me.
You can coast on FG bike as well. Just let your feet move on with pedals but don't apply pressure, so effectively you are resting at that time. Well, it's very close to coasting without really coasting.
hi from Ukraine, I'm your fan, you're cool. I have 4 bikes, but no fix yet
fixies dont have brakes?
. ... Your dog may move his ears back or flatten them against his head when he is feeling submissive, anxious or afraid. The more fearful the dog is, the farther back his ears may move.
I agree 100 percent. Riding fixed to me is like pedal assist. I prefer using a vintage setup. Love the channel. @Bikesbytony
I've been riding a 70's steel frame for nearly a decade now, do you think it would be time to upgrade into a lighter frame?
Maybe purely just for the fun of changing things up. I’d guess you would find yourself missing your old bike with time!
No
Stubbornness I very nearly weed myself tbh. That was hilarious xx
Hi Jokim nice story I ride fixed only ride style is ride barefoot and ride the wave ...the best feature is I don't get lactose problem in my legs due to constant leg movements in constant motion but not constant load which means you legs can be under light tourk which refreshes leg pain quickly whilst in motion that s why I think fixie is the king of bikes the original bike of your d France thanks for video

I’m new to this kinda , I live in Australia and I was just wondering if someone could help me out with a cheaper brand I have the budget of around $350. If someone could link me to a good website or local shop in Melbourne thanks
Only Antisocial people here.
You've either spent the 350 or You've saved up more money.

No, I was king.
And I'm still the king.
I love the feeling of fixed gear. Nothing like it
All Bikes are unique.

Ayy shoutout to NS fixed gear riders!
we all started with a fixed gear and training wheels then we discover the wheelie and the drifting
Fuck training wheels
48x16.. got front brake..
nice video bro im the same as yyou and love how you explain things love you bro love fron philippines always ridefsafe and have a goodtime. new subs here :)
what are your thoughts on converting a disk hub into a fixed gear rear hub?
I did it for a customer once at the shop, but it was a single speed cog specific hub, so it didn’t look weird nor were the spoke tensions off by too much.
I’d be hesitant to bolt a cog to a 10 speed disk hub haha
Spindatt I did it, it works fine for now. Not sure how it would last long term but I’ve taken it on mtb trails and it did ok. I got the 16 tooth Origen8 cog off amazon if your curious
what have you done to your ears
all about looks
sublime brah
simple easy and pure 😁😁
Damn damn, I'm permanently returning to idea of ss/fg only bc I rode ss bike in my early youth. But now when I could have fancy geared bike I like idea of minimalism and lightness. Autumn is a good time to shop for or build a bike.
Build one!
Look mom, my fixed gear... no brakes!
In all European countries your ride would be instantly over after the first encounter with cops.
I live in the EU and have been riding fixed brakeless for 4 years now, the cops don't care
I count two gears, Froward & Reverse ; -)
Three if you have a flip/flop hub.
@@devianb well 4 if U put a track cog on both sides *requires horizantal or adjustable dropouts
Fixed gear is hard it cant stop
Very easy to install.
