I Ran 4 kilometres in my 18th Century Stays

  • Hello and welcome to this video!
After completing my 18th century stays over a year ago I soon realised that they weren't really those torture devices that we constantly are told. However, even if they indeed worked perfectly, I couldn't avoid thinking of how it would have been to really try them during something quite physical, and my thoughts then developed into an idea where I would run in them for a couple of kilometres. I thought this would have been a fun way to really found out how this garment would affect my breathing during hard physical labor. The whole idea turned out to be an exiting, interesting and ... breathtaking experiment.
I also want to note that I, during this video describes certain experiences, and the consequences that I percieve. This doesn't have to be a general thing, and even if I expresses things during the process like that's a universal, scientific truth, it's most often just my own perception.
    ...and before you ask:
    1 Kilometer = 0.621371 Miles

J S Corsets and stays don’t do that though. A well fitted corset or pair of stays is very comfortable. It’s only uncomfortable of harmful if it’s not sized to your measurements or if it’s laced very tightly, which isn’t the norm.

I never get why big movies imply tight lacing so much. And the super tiny waist. Two movies that come to mind are Cinderella 2015 and Pirates of the Caribbean (I think the first or second part, where Elizabeth's corset is so tight because 'its the fashion in England') It was never fashion. It was quite rare actually. Even for upperclass women. That is why there is so much text about tightlacing, because it was super rare and it was a thing that people found crazy and wanted to read about.
I am also pretty shure that costume makers would at least put a little investigation into historical clothing, they would know that women wore well fitting undergarments. Its probably the directors that want the dramatic forms.

Me too. But this can change with practice and repetition. You first have to walk. Just Walk. A LOT! Everywhere, if you can. As you get used to walking a lot, you'll soon be able to run a little bit as well, without becoming breathless. I know this from personal experience. Went to the gym for a month (not daily though) and i would have to walk uphill a bit, until reaching the gym from the bus station. I also used the machine /can't remember its name right now/ and at first i would just walk on it. slowly, i managed to walk up to speed 5.5 or 6 even. and then i slowly increased the speed up to 7 and 8 where i was forced to run. i managed to run for 1 minute or so and not die. LOL. Had i continued to go to the gym, i'm sure i'd be able to run for longer.. /just some tips if you ever want to improve this aspect of your life...

You have a beautiful running route - the scenery alone would make you breathless! I wonder whether if someone wore stays day in day out their body would adjust to work with them so they could breathe deeply down rather than a sort of down and out that you do when not corseted?

    • @elinabrahamsson9442
      @elinabrahamsson9442  5 лет назад +42

That is very likely! One must keep in mind that this was the first time in half a year that I wore them. I remember that I learned to breath in a little different way when I wore them every day. I'm sure people who had been wearing them for every day almost whole their lives would have developed a way to breath "properly", and also didn't really bother since they didn't really have something else to compare with.

It would have been safer to have a bow tied in the lacing so that you could easily release yourself from the stays if you hyperventilated. Also Women of the time would have laced their stays much more loosely when working and anticipating physical activity just as we choose different garments for different activities.

Thank you so much Miss Abrahamsson for busting yet another stay/corset myth... I first saw your endeavour over on the Instagram and was absolutely taken with this ingenious idea of proving that you can do physical work in them. And now after watching your fantastic video about the run and how you felt afterwards it only proves that it is possible. The extreme lacing a fraction of society did in history have built this misconception of constant breathlessness and immobility that people have of corsets nowadays.

I was talking with a lady aged around 70 at a local history museum this week. All staff are in 17 to 19th century costume. She is the one who makes their costumes and man's the draper's shop.
She said she appreciates the back support and the way her corset makes her stand straight with good posture. I'm 59 and can tell you she looked energetic, not old and tired. Only her face showed her to be 10 to 15 years older than me.
She also pointed out that women of those centuries, and earlier, had a lot of heavy work to do. Carrying wood and water, making butter, cheese, grinding corn/oats before they could cook, spinning and weaving etc. With all of that they would have been glad of the back support.

If it helps, I wore a set of 18th century stays that I made (again, not brilliantly, but they did the job) for an all day archery shoot on an Aussie summer's day. I was sweaty, but so was everyone else. My posture was AMAZING, and it definitely helped my form.
If I hadn't had to make a few repairs to them, I'd still wear them every week. Indeed, once I've fixed them, or made a new set, I WILL be wearing them.
And let's remember, women wearing full-on Victorian corsets were able to participate in archery, even in competitions.
And before you say it, no, you don't have to run for archery, but it is actually more physical than you think...

Great work! This shows that stays and corsets aren't torture devices if they are made to fit you. You can actually move around very well in them despite what people seem to think. This reminds me of the security vests I use when riding. They are covering your ribcage, and your back and spine but not your stomach. (I guess because there is a lot of soft tissue there?). These vests are secured pretty tight but since the stomach is free you can breathe very easily. I actually find that wearing my security vest encouraged me to take deeper breathes rather than breathe on the top of my lungs since that was easier with the free stomach. I actually didn't become so out of breath when wearing the vest compared to not wearing the vest. Even though the vest is made to protect your body against falls I discovered that it helped with breathing "properly" as well. Maybee a stomach-less corset is the answer...?

    • @elinabrahamsson9442

Isn't there something called corset mesh? It was designed for summer corsets and were super airy, and I've noticed lots of modern dancer costumes use a similar material. I Bought a dress in college that had a built in, see-through corset made of a non-stretchy mesh with bones set in silk casings to accentuate the corset look. Maybe Elin could get that and do a "running corset"

wool coats at generally a very hot time of year with temps as high as 100F. As a water bearer, carrying buckets
of water across the field from camp for the soldiers in full boned stays for about 2 hours non-stop I can say, yes

Stays and corsets are about a million times more comfortable than bras. Hollywood has turned people against them, but they were made by women for women, which is why they were so popular for so long!
Also it does seem that you lace yours too tightly. A properly laced and fitted corset should not inhibit your breath! They should support your chest and flatten your stomach, not squeeze you thinner!

    • @sycamorevalley8580

Actually stay/corset makers were usually men. It was really hard to deal with the baleen. It was a male profession. That said, I agree better for supporting the bust. Bras suck. They put all the weight of your breast support right under the breasts in a relatively narrow band. It's a weird thing to do.

@@sycamorevalley8580 you should watch Karolina Zabrowska's video on this, she shows some examples of companies owned by woman in the corsetry business. You should also think about small business, much like today we go to the seamstress down the street or to a specially talented relative that sews for ajustments, they did too for corsetry (as patterns were available at the time). It was not a business per se, and surely was not famous or remarkable in any way, but this has always happened and still do. She makes you a corset, you pay with money or a couple chikens, maybe some corn from the family crops. You know, poor people and country people had their special way of doing things. You may have been having trouble fully engaging your iliopsoas muscles (major hip flexors) while you were running uphill & doing sit-ups because of the external abdominal compression (maybe), but more likely (while running) you couldn’t fully use all of your lung power.
I think of stays as period (long-line) brassieres. I always thought that I would do better with stays than with a corset, but I don’t know because I haven’t tried the comparison in real life. I think it a pity that metal eyelets were added to corsets, because those metal eyelets are what made tight-lacing possible.
    The biggest medical concerns are:
    1. Lower lobe pneumonia, because of under-ventilation of the lower part of both lungs.
    2. Gastric reflex (heartburn), because the increased intra-abdominal pressure will push stomach acid up into the esophagus.
    3. The increased intra-abdominal and intra-pelvic pressure from a tight pair of stays or a tight-laced corset can cause urinary incontinence and/or vaginal prolapse in women who have given birth.
I highly doubt that women commonly broke their own ribs by excessive tight-lacing! And a well-fitting pair of stays might also provide some extra support to one’s back for heavy-lifting tasks (not unlike a power-lifters wide leather belt).

    • @vilwarin5635
      @vilwarin5635 5 лет назад +2

I think the ribs breaking thing could be possible due to suffering from al illness that debilitate your bones (there were lots of illnesses and infections around) and lack of calcium or bad diet (because diets then weren´t the same as diets now). But of course, the breaking of bones would be a combination of all the factors, not only corsets.

back when women were wearing stays they had sports stays that were not as restricting as regular stays. you might want to find a pattern of those and then retry the experiment

Please could you tell me how a woman would ever nurse a child if she had to wear stays? Would the dress/stays/chemise all have to be undone in order to nurse, then re-dress entirely afterwards? I have a hard time picturing a woman doing that every four hours with a newborn. Do you think maybe they had special clothes for nursing mothers, or at least mothers of newborns?

    • @highlanddancer8671

Marialla correct me if I’m wrong, but often the wealthy people would use a wet nurse and they would nurse the baby not the mother. I’m not sure what middle to lower class women would have done however

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. 4 года назад

@@highlanddancer8671 I'm sure you are correct that nursing was often a job given to others if possible. But even poor and working class women did wear stays, same as everyone wears bras today, so whoever was nursing had to have some kind of method or accommodation for it... and I've never heard it mentioned or read anything about how it was handled.

Elin, I know that this video was 2 years ago but wanted to let you know a little bit about stays that I have learned from Bernadette Banner.
Women back then were the same sizes as we are today. The secret to having a "tiny" waist was an illusion created by the proportions. The bust was 10 inches bigger than the waist and the hips were 15 inches bigger than the waist! They were not lacing up tight! The stays were snug fitting to give support.
I would like to see a new video done with a properly fitted stays or corset and then you running in that. I suspect that the results will be different.
Keep sewing, plant dyeing and producing all that you do, young lady. You are amazing!

I assume the main problem with wearing a stays during a jog is probably the lack of cooling at the stomach area. Originally it is human's natural adaptation that allows us to run for a very long distance meanwhile the other animals can perform only sprints because they've got a furry belly.

    such a cool idea!
However, there are some things that I should have liked to know before this inofficial experiment:
Do you go running like this regularly (without the stays)?
Because I noticed that people who start running more often than not perform more poorly the second time they run, especially if they don't give their bodies time to rest (at least one day without running) after the first time.
Talking from personal experience here (when I started jogging, the first time was fine, second time was horrible, third time I felt like dying and only then it became easier, even though I always rested for at least 48 hours) but also from collected experience from other hobby joggers

I want such a forest for my own! I often go on a walk and I think, it would be such a great territory to explore! Where I usually walk, there are marked paths and you can see the influence of the human race everywhere. Especially when you cross people with at least one dog each every 200 meters at least. I always feel like I'm the only person going for a walk and not having a dog with me... (that sentence was rubbish, but I think, you get it) Yeah, it would be great to have such a huge untouched territory to explore :-) you're very lucky :-)

This is a great video! I've been considering running in stays or a corset, because I do have very large breasts and it's uncomfortable to run in a bra for me, plus I have bad posture. I wonder if maybe the breathing would be more comfortable if you wore the stays regularly before the experiment to get your body used to them again? It's something I'll have to try, for sure!

It seems like belly-breathing to recover from a sprint is much less do-able in stays, but especially with worn-in stays physical activity must not have been a huge problem for women back in the day
