  • Many have asked about them and here are finally a whole video dedicated to them - my beloved chickens. This year may have been the most dramatical year for me as a chicken mum, a tragic spring that again and again came with new devastating insights and challenges, and then finally some sort of sunlight among the many clouds - Hedvig and Ingeborg.

*THE SECOND I CLICKED* I knew the phrase "the fox has got them" was coming... And sure enough - 2 minutes in the fox arrived.
    1) Chickens make WAY better pets than you would ever expect, they are GREAT
    2) All chicken stories end with "The fox got them", foxes are astonishing at getting chickens. They will chew through chicken mesh if they have to to get them, I've seen it...

We lost are two older chickens to a kit fox this year, we found it's footprint. For the 2nd kill it got into the coop and killed her in her resting place. We moved the coop and made it sturdier. We still have three Austtralops. I feel for you.

I had SO many chickens. The first group was killed by foxes. When we got the second group, we built fences, and set up security cameras. It didn’t work :(. The THIRD group had chicks and they grew up and one by one were picked off by the family of foxes that lived in the woods. I love chickens, but I think I’m gonna stop getting them haha.

Two of my mom's chickens passed this year (of four). One was taken, we think, by an eagle. The other got sick. So she was down to two, and her rooster, which is *way* too few hens for one rooster. So then she got six chicks, five of which ended up being roosters even though they were all supposed to be hens. So all those fellows got rehomed, and she ended up with six more from the breeder as replacements. *Then* a friend of hers said she was getting rid of her two hens because she was moving, so Mom ended up with those two as well.
So she went from 4 hens, down to 2, and now she has 11.
That all happened between March and September. She says she's happy to have so many chickens to keep her busy during quarantine, even though she's only getting about 1 egg a day since most of them are either too young, too old, or too stressed from changing homes to lay anything.

I was taught as a child that new members to the flock should be slipped into the chicken house at once all are asleep, so chickens and new chickens wake up in the morning together and figure they must know each other. Makes the smoothest entry for chick's.

    • @elinabrahamsson9442

There are different ways to do this and I'm sure they can all work. Why we decided to go with this method was because( as you maybe saw) the size difference between them was huge and if we would just toss them into her, I'm not sure they would survive it... So we needed to wait a bit until they grew some, but we still wanted them to feel each others company.

We came home one day and found only Helga and the other three gone... later we found three piles of feathers. It was devastating. Helga cried and cried all weekend. So, after, we went and welcomed 4 chicks into our home, and Helga was delighted. I think some people don't realize how much chickens feel. I remember coming off of the bus from school and they would run to me. They would follow me around in the house and outside. They would chase dogs away and would be so merry. We had 4 chairs on our balcony and each hen would sit in the same one all the time and chatter at each other. It was so funny... I love them all so much!

On my family's farm we had a terrible problem with raccoons. We lost birds every night no matter what we did. Even trapping relocating and even killing the raccoons we would still find bodies every morning. We went from an established flock of over 75 chickens including pets and show animals beside the layers and breeding stock, to nothing in just over a year. It was so painful.
I can't imagine what you must have gone through knowing all your birds were pets.

We live in Deep East Texas and have always had chickens. They're just like any other pets: there are smart ones and not so smart ones. lol And then...there are people who do well with chickens and those who don't. You, Elina, are most definitely a Chicken Person! ...and they know it, right off. As for the foxes...we can't fault them. They do what foxes do. And we do what we can to keep our livestock safe from the foxes and other predators. That does not, however, relieve the pain we feel when we suffer such losses. I just looked up "fox deterrents" and there are many gadgets, potions and such on the market. You might want to check into such to see if you can add a higher level of protection for your Feathered Family. Thank you, once again, for such a beautiful and touching video, hon. 'Twas wonderful!

This was so sad, but I'm glad Alma has new friends. I've been researching about Silkies lately because in my later years once I move back to the east coast--I want a small homestead.

This was lovely, they are adorable! And I loved the dramatic music 😅. We got chickens last summer, and it's been such a joy watching them grow and play. I now also really feel the moment you have a chicken on your back and can't reach to get them down. Ours are a lot smaller, but they do love to climb!

I’ve lost many hens that I raised from chicks. It’s so hard when they get hurt or killed😔 I love that you treat your hens so well. Chickens are so sweet and personable. You have such a kind soul💗

I've also carried a bird on my back. It really is hard to find them with your hands again, you can't see them after all. I kept a baby starling for the first time, it was great. Went to a bird rescue to learn to bird from his species, I cried so hard, but he must have a good life out there. I'm glad to have had him. He was lighter than a chicken, which I haven't had on my back (yet, hopefully), I really want some.

Started crying as soon as I noticed all the past tense being used in the captions about the 3 that passed. This is also so interesting to see. Chickens scare me a bit cause they look super fragile to me and I don't want to upset them

I am so happy that we got to be introduced with these two adorable new chicks. And i am very sorry for your loss, too. My parents have had chicken for like 10 years, and two years ago, one of our first chicks, the one i liked the most, our little grandma, died at age 8. She was named No Future because she looked like hell of a punk. Chears to all the chicks in chicken paradise
