Good Afternoon Dereck, Hearing you speak of your archive material made me go back and listen to some of the "Future Sound of London" Archives that I have. I do acknowledge though that FSOL have more musical equipment to ground their soundstage. Having said that, you do very well with the sounds you create, with limited resources. Sometimes, the raw cut of a recording, reaches beyond the clinical sound of a professional studio, and at times, even surpassing it. stay safe and go well.
Hot in Pendleton SC too Dereck I'm 71 and have to have a cancerous tumor that's pressing on my Bladder and having it cut out on Tuesday May 2 think of me Sir and also my husband who is 70 is suffering through this heat with early onset Alzhemers...
This very well may be the coldest summer of the rest of our lives. The AC in our home went out yesterday during a 100 degree day in Jacksonville. Thankfully my landlord is very prompt about AC work and had someone out this morning. Very anxious about this hurricane season. This time of year makes me think more of the fact that my fortuitous circumstances are not isolated, or of a vacuum, that if a hurricane skirts away from where I am it just goes somewhere else. Often times it's to a place where people live much worse off than me, in this country or abroad. It has forced me to reflect more on our wasteful society and how much opportunity for real goodness we have thrown away. With our climate I just feel this sense of everything that holds us together, slipping through our fingers. You're right that we are in denial and it makes me feel angry and mournful. I am trying to learn to let go of what I can't control and it's hard. Dealing with family stuff lately has left me with a lot of dread, wondering when the next shoe is going to drop. Just wanted to write out these feelings because it can be helpful. I find it strange people insist so much on the AFX when it's clear you love electronic music generally and "IDM" specifically as well. I enjoy your thoughts on tape manipulation and connection to childhood practice and that connection to a medium of music. Something I've experienced as well and seen in a lot of musical friends. Cheers Dereck and thank you ❤
In the early 2000s, when I was in middle school, I cut lawns in the hot southern sun for a whole summer to get enough money to go see TOOL on the Lateralus tour with Meshuggah opening. That pull brought me back lol
Global warming is REAL! I hope that you get some relief soon from the weather. Herw in NW Indiana we just have the heat, although yesterday was pretty nice, it was only in the lower 80's, but today it's hot, with severe storms.
Another important factor to keep in mind is that the Sun has passed its mid-life stage. From here on its on an unstoppable trend to the Red Giant Stage of its life in 5.3 Billion years. Scientifically, its been estimated that we Humans have only 500,000 years left on planet Earth before we have to depart our planet for somewhere else. In that 500,000 year timeframe we can Terraform Mars and in doing so could potentially turn Mars into a second Earth. stay safe and go well.
Hey, watched the Negativland documentary also. It was really interesting, been a fan of theirs since the early 80s, seen them a couple of times in NYC. Be well, stay cool!❤
I happened to see another video maker I needn't name who commented on global warming to the effect of "I'm old, I've been around, it's just weather." That's the Dunning-Kruger effect in action right there...somebody thinks that their age and personal experience makes them smarter than the people who have actually STUDIED the situation. Regarding Coltrane, I was also introduced to his music through a compilation. My dad for some reason bought the double LP His Greatest Years Vol. 2 on Impulse, with the yellow and purple cover. I only knew Coltrane by reputation at the time. My dad had pretty conservative musical tastes, so I was surprised when he brought this home. I'm guessing he might have heard one of the more palatable tracks like "Chim Chim Cheree" or the big band version of "Greensleeves" on the radio or something. He did not respond well to the really wild stuff like "Ascension" and "The Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost," but I loved it!
Nuance is hard for a lot of people. Surrounding myself with people that can have nuanced discussions as I age has been wonderful. People that take a single criticism of X Y or Z to mean that I am writing whatever or whoever it is off as "bad" or "evil" like life is binary is frustrating. I would be frustrated too if I was talking to the public haha.
I’m so surprised that you of all people do not get Aphex Twin. He is such an important figure in the growth trajectory of electronic music. How about ųZig ??
@@dereckvon I have a giga byte of Apex Twin and after a while his music tends to be repeats of what he has done before. If you make as much music as Apex Twin has, its best to use some musical variety. That's what makes Dereck's music so wonderful: musical variety, and he finds new sounds to incorporate into his sound collage.
I have two friends from when I lived in NYC that knew Lou Reed well, one of them went through his estate with Laurie and archived all of these things he had in his storage and studios in the city. A lot of cool stuff he had. I had plenty of stories about Lou that were pretty wild.
Dereck, I'm a newbie to this channel, so I don't know if you have already shown something in your old videos, but I see Meshuggah! Therefore I ask: what metal do you like? Death metal, black metal, funeral doom,... I'm curious! Cheers from Italy!
@@dereckvonThat's the right approach 😁 I'll certainly watch more of your content. By the way, I love your interview with Richard Barbieri: it has made me discover a lot of very fascinating works.
@@enri_mucca Enri, as a person who has been on Dereck's channel for more than ten years I can tell you there are a lot of videos that you should discover. Dereck has in the time he has been posting (more than ten years), has produced thousands of videos. There's a lot to like and great music to discover. Your musical journey with Dereck is only beginning, Enjoy. stay safe and go well.
Been enjoying Seal II since it came out 30 years ago. Was just looking at the credits again and was surprised to see that Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman (Prince & The Revolution) are two of the principal musicians. Phil Spalding (GTR) and William Orbit are also listed. Amazing talent assembled by Seal and Trevor Horn. Stay cool! 🧊

On "Kiss from a Rose", when Seal sings Baby! he puts a whole pop song into the lyric, believe it.

I get Aphex. I don't enjoy listening to him. A lot of his stuff sounds like he's just jacking around. Yes I have uziq. We're all unique individuals.

Hi from Tokyo
Props to Ian Dury, an interesting geezer.
I see Meshuggah as the thumbnail and it's an instant like from me :D
Hi Derek!
You are the only RUclipsr covering 70s prog rock, free jazz, new wave and underground electronic music. So much respect for what you are doing.
No he is not. You need to explore the Vinyl Community here.
He has taked about Masami Tsuchiya and No New York in the same video though.
