This video is going to be part of a series, focusing mostly on a single synth and some pedals on the small desk. I've done these before of course, with the Lyra-8, Iridium Desktop, Elektron boxes etc and recently I started doing this again with the Novation Summit while I was programming some new sounds for it. it's fun and quite relaxing to just improvise with such a small setup as opposed to say doing stuff in the DAW where i have to consider which synths to use/load up, choosing FX for each track, mixing as I go etc etc. Having the one synth on the desk for a few days also encourages me to design a bunch of brand new sounds for each synth, which in turn helps with another project - to release some presets! So anyway, they'll be plenty more of these in the future, though for now I've just moved the eurorack back onto this desk for the modular patch.
been patiently waiting for some State Azure preset packs and i'm sure you'll have loads of interested parties. but more importantly, can't wait to see the rig back in the picture as tedious as it may be to patch the whole thing. Modular Works V was life-changing and even got the whole family into your music.
Really liking these videos of 1 synth on the desk. I actually used the Modwave the other day for a couple of hours. I also downloaded the demo version vst. I actually thought the VST version was much better to work with. I've always gone the hardware route so found it odd preferring the VST of the Modwave. I have the Wavestate hardware and VST version but with that one I prefer the hardware 100%.
This is amazing, just so relaxing to listen to. Would you ever consider doing a tutorial showing noobs like me how this is all linked up and how it works? I have the synths to do stuff like this, just not the knowledge yet…. Like how to sync up with each other via MIDI clock etc still confuses me….and what order each instrument is routed through each other. A small video just explaining the ins and outs of even one of your videos like this one, would be absolutely amazing and invaluable to me.
@@darkcognitive I don't really do tutorials, but this set up is very simple and there's absolutely no syncing or MIDI to worry about. It's really just the Opsix audio routed into the pedals and recorded into the DAW. Even the DAW isn't important here, because the DittoX4 and Cosmos can do the looping, the DAW is just for recording the audio.
I love that you use really expensive stuff, and then you have really affordable stuff. It all works. I am trying to set up a basic thing, since I'm not really a piano player. I have a Microfreak, and a couple of controllers. I also have a Werkstatt, and a Behringer Crave. I have a Microcosm and a Strymon Nightsky, that I bought specifically for synth experiments. But I'm starting to see plugins as a useful thing, now that I have that same MAC that you have. My only regret was not spending the extra for 16 gbs of RAM. I only got 8. Thanks for inspiring me to think I could maybe make some beautiful synth music, too..Thanks for all of your hard work. The only problem is, you make it all look so damn easy. lol!
Thanks! I'm always telling people that the equipment doesn't really matter much. My best music is made on software only with cheap plugins. I think 8gb on your Mac will still be plenty enough to do music with, you might just run into trouble if you use too many samples/sample libraries etc
Glorious track… Also, thank you for listing all your gear, really an interesting read. Especially the cameras and lenses since it’s something I know little about but I always love how your videos look.
Music for a Journey through a Salt Lamp-lit Landscape. Fantastic (as always). You know how to touch the strings, keys, and reeds of our inner souls. Thank you (yet again). As always.
That microcosm gadget seems to be a very handy tool in a musicians box of magical sounds. Might get one of them. Great piece, enjoyed it very much. Great work Pat!
I’ve ordered the Cosmos to go with the Microcosm, plus the new H90, I’ve got the Magneto in a rack but need to look at the other Strymon pedals a bit more closely, it’s all a bit of a minefield, you are a bit of an inspiration I really like watching your videos 👌🏼
With the H90 you probably wont need any others, I have one on order too. My favourite hardware reverb was the Eventide Space which the H90 has covered and imo beats the Big Sky for ambient music, I've no doubt the H90 will have amazing delays and other FX too. The Microcosm into the Cosmos is a really nice combination, since the Cosmos grabs all those cool sounds Microcosm spits out and merges them into a soundscape.
Lee, you wont be disappointed. I have the cosmos, and some of this gear he has (I am NOT state azure's level by any means). I personally like strymon nightsky for ambient style reverb like this. If you want to hear some of my work, I have an ambient channel where I explicitly make solfeggio tones with all sorts of keyboards, modular, and various instruments...
Thanks, Martin! It was only used from around 27 mins onwards, but included the flute and bell improvisations after that point. I think around 31 min onwards demonstrates the typical kind of Cosmos playback after recording those. Cosmos is definitely not for standard looping, it's more fun/creative/random but makes for very interesting drifting and diffused soundscapes. For more standard looping I used the E520 and DittoX4 earlier in the video.
Fanatastic sound can you list all of gear used here to create this. I am looking to buy the microcosm and opsix and have a m1 with logic but no interface yet. Many thanks
Perhaps an odd question but how do you keep your instruments looking that spotless? Even with all my efforts I still see dust on mine in the right light but yours always look like they came right out of the box.
Yeah it's hard man, I freaking hate dust! A lot of my synths, those on my stands and my small desk which you see in this video are covered all the time when not in use. My stands are covered by drum kit covers, and the desk by a simple fabric cover. For dusting I use a fairly soft barbers neck brush, which is amazing for getting between knobs/sliders etc. and an ostrich feather duster for doing larger areas if needed.
please please if it is going to be a series a bandcamp release...., best music to enjoy in the nature, in the night, at job....the sound of synths is better that anything else... state azure i use your music to walk and relax as my job is very very stressfull...for example this music is perfect inside the water.. as a swimmer , this is perfect to listen diving....i never understand why synths make me feel in contact with nature...it has been this way since i was a child with oxygene from JMJ for example...
Hey there. What is the synthesizer to the top left of your Opsix ? (Black semi modular one with a screen and lots of dials? ) Thx. Very unusual, haven't seen it before.
No, I did a video called 'Wasteland' just a few weeks ago with it. I'm not doing the eurorack quite as regularly anymore, spreading time between other synth focused stuff and the DAW etc. The eurorack setup is a smaller setup than it used to be.
@@stateazure thanks for the answer, much appreciated! :) I need to check the wasteland video, I must have missed it. This cosmos drifting-looping works wonders in your hands

Ahhh, I love the sounds of your synths. You are gr8 at setting the mood. Plus you have the best room lighting ambience.
Glad you enjoy the videos :)
Perfect sounds for brainstorming, writing in my journal, or just chilling. Thank you!
Glad to hear it, thank you!
Love waking up to new music from State Azure! Best way to start my day!!
Glad i found your stuff two years ago, i still listen to your older improvs with heavier baselines
SPOT ON !
I love Korg and you use it very well, I own the Korg Wavestate Native and I have published some pieces on RUclips... you are a crack composer.
Beautiful. The last half is reminiscent of solar wind chimes.

@@stateazure Thanks for that. I'll keep that in mind, about the sampling. I got an Akai LPD8 and the Beats software, for drums.
In the right Zone. Thank You.
That was really great. Thank you so much! Helping me with a rough day.
Hope it helped!

Appreciated! The Microcosm is one of my favourite pedals for ambient, that's for sure.
This sounds like the soundtrack to a horror/sci-fi film, especially around the 25 minute mark. I love it!
Like something for a Panos Cosmatos film.
Yeah man
deeper the water so shallow the athmosphere:-)
Just sublime. This is a combination I really want to try, but making it this lovely will take me a lot of work.
The brain chip story you unknowingly soundtracked as I wrote it is becoming reality

Lovely stuff! I love my OpSix, it's a fun synth. And you've just inspired me to get the Cosmos out more often too :)
Fantastic music generated with amazing sound !
This is lovely, top work mate!
Amazing!
Super Dewper!
Unreal 👽🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great!
Good sounds. Amazing
Thanks. I needed that. Been a rough day. 🙂
Sorry about that, hope the music helped a little!

A wonderful performance! I am afraid that I will need to get a Cosmos! Is it correct to assume that you did most of the looping with it in this set?

At about 17:00 I had to “wake up” because I thought I heard a Roland RS505 stringer! You got pretty close to the low end on it. ❤

Thanks, Igor! I don't intend to release any of these single synth focused tracks on BC or anywhere, these are just for YT.
Hey Azure, I’m curious: have you ever done live shows? 😎
Never, except for here on YT during live streams. If I were a lot younger I would consider doing some.

That's the E520 Hyperion FX Processor by Synthesis Technology, a eurorack module. I was using it's Looping function just for this improv.
What's the box between the Microcosm and the Soma Cosmos?
That looks like the E520 Stereo Effects Processor (Eurorack module)
