John - you are fast becoming my fav U'tuber for photography content. You've got the guy with hair like a bush who sniffs cameras, the husband and wife who are the Ken and Barbie of photography, the Aussie bloke with 'Golden Fever', who loves his half-naked Asian girls and the mumbling Pom who loves his landscapes. Most of them are pretend photographers who photograph brick walls and do reviews from their armchairs. You are the real deal John, who almost every day photographs real people and real models and shares the nitty gritty of running a photography business. It must pay you well because just about every week you have some new piece of expensive equipment in your hands.
I think we forgot that part on our journey as photographers, TO HAVE FUN, thanks for sharing this video, im mostly an event wedding photographer, and always wanted to do portraits, and coming across your RUclips channel has inspired me and is giving me so much inspiration to start my journey as a portrait photographer,
Love the look of the flash being so close to the lens! No abrupt shadow on the neck and the colors really pop! I'm really enjoying your channel, it's refreshing to get insight from a working photographer! Happy New Year from 🇨🇦!
I like to watch your videos and I love your results. It is really nice to see professional results with non-professional (some would say) gear. You inspire me that I do not need expensive sruff to get started with portraits. No giant softboxes, no 10 strobes in the studio and the results are very beautiful. I loved how the model shines on the photos. I take photos of everything but I was afraid of portrait photography. Until now. I am finally starting to feel that I could be good at it. Thank you :) Sorry for my english
My fav shoots are at night walking around downtown with some girls and the ad1200 on my back with the ring flash and the 50. Just so much fun. It’s a great departure. Awesome shots!
Oh I miss those days! In my younger days we would take a flash light or use the car headlights and shoot at midnight in the most unique locations. It really is amazing.
I don’t have a 28 (yet) but a 35 and 50 on my R7V. I have never really considered a simple flash unit, (natural light only) nor how important it is to keep it close to the lens. But I want to try it! These images are mind blowing. Any suggestions for flash units out there?
Great photos. Did you remove white backdrop shadows in post process in some of the photos ? Could you do a portrait session showing different methods you use to have no-shadows white backdrop (in your channel you never have shadows on backdrops, and it must be a combo depending of the session of big softboxes, light/model placement and post, but I'm kind of struggling with the topic)
Thank you. I'm really enjoyed yr channel and love the look of the flash , (just wondering the soft diffuser on the flash.. love to know more about it. Thanks.
Nice video, photo session and resulting images as always, thanks. At times I shot portraits with a 24/1.8 up close in their face. A guy once said to me at an event: "You like to shot close, don't you?". And it is true since I think one in many cases gets more intimate portraits that way. Another reason is because at the crowded events I shot people start to walk between me and my subject if I don't stand close enough. And finally people these days are more used to see themself shot with a wide angle than a light tele since they have used their smartphone for selfies which typically is around 26 mm. It also happens that I shot full body environmental portraits with a 16 mm to get the distorted perspective. But there is no rule to always use wide angles either, I shot portraits at 200 mm as well if I think that will do it. You have already touched this in another of your videos Different people look better or worse at different focal lengths and one have to figure out what works best for a specific person. And also choose focal length depending on the scene and what one wants to accomplish.
I got a nikon d600 just because it has a built in flash, and just bought a manual focus 300mm ai lens for outdoor portraits, people stay in that box too much. My fav portrait lens is a yungnuo 50mm 1.8. 100 bucks. Great lens. Thanks for the inspo
Nothing really of value to add but you made me genuinely laugh about the 85mm bokeh monsters. I have the same 28mm lens and it’s a favourite of mine. It’s just an absolute joy to use
@@kaskoPhoto I really like the look of the “new” 35 summilux based on the pre asph model. But it’s not in black. My 35 is the 2.5 Summarit. Criminally underrated lens
Great video, I like a lot the BTS / photo rendered type while talking. Can you tell us more about this Acetate stuff that you get from Amazon ? And also a mini demonstration with without to see the difference. While I am at it there are two positions of the internal reflector on the FUJI flash, which one are you using (up or down ?) Thanks lot, we love your channel !
I believe the correct name is Translucent Vellum Paper 50 sheets is about $8. With and without - with just cuts back on specular highlights. And is much easier on shine. Without is sharper if you will. I always shoot with the wide diffuser on - down position.
Great work as always. I am having trouble attaching the flash to my M10R, it’s not sitting all the way in the hotshoe. Is there a trick of some sort to do this?
Hi John. Great video ! I myself use the same FUJIFILM EF-X20 flash for the Leica M/Q2, and for all types of focal lengths. It works very well. It looks like you've found a perfectly matched diffuser for this flash. Do you have a link to where the diffuser can be ordered ? Best regards John T. Pedersen Photojournalist/Norway
That’s an easy one. With wide angle I’m always stopped down for what I primarily use it for. A wide gives you greater depth-of-field by design and having or shooting at anything wider then 2.8 serves no purpose for me. My very first wide with a 1.4 was a Nikon. I was young and dumb and thought… if it has 1.4 I’m going to use 1.4…. Then I got the group photos pulled up from a wedding and almost had a heart attack! 2 people in focus and the rest were just…. And when I’m shooting events, there is rarely one person in the photo… so I need more depth there as well. Finally, the weight, price and sharpness are all powerful factors as well. Hope this answers your question.
Minor skin work (she has great skin already) and cleaned up the dirty white background in some. I did have to tweak the color in a few because I was set to auto white balance to start before I woke up and switched to flash
I believe Terry Richardson ( I think that is his name ) used flash at lens level. Custom Brackets has a bracket CB Mini-RC. I have used it with a Godox TT350 when I shot with Olympus. I still have the bracket and have wanted to try it with my Nikon Z system. Also the Godox Lux Junior comes to mind for this similar look. I enjoyed seeing your results with this combo. Got me thinkin' !
@@kaskoPhoto I'm old too (66) but when I was searching for different ideas I came across this concept. What I have found is my tt350 stands too tall. I think your Fuji and the Godox are better suited. Also the Z50 has a built in flash, which may be another choice/concept.
Yeah, I love those images! I found it hard to achieve this look. Did you mix ambient light with the flash or was your base ambient exposure a black frame and you added the flash? I now have the Sigma 18 - 50 on my X-S10 for this wide angle look and the Godox Lux Junior. I truly dig this image style - thanks for the video!
@@kaskoPhoto For its price it is pretty neat. I used it with low available light indoors and the power was sufficient. It is a different story outdoors. It is way harder to get this "flashy" look. Sometimes there was just not enough power (understandably). It was good for lifting the shadows outside and brightening things up. That can also be tricky but I got some good results sometimes. When only lifting shadows I am very keen on not letting it look like flash being used.
Can I ask - I have this flash unit but I'm not able to mount it on the hotshoe of my M10-R. It gets about three quarters of the way in but will go no further. I don't see in the shoe any corner fill that would mean filing off a corner on the foot of the flash unit, so I'm a little bemused! Any tip you might have would be gratefully received - thanks!
I’ve only had that type of issue once before when I was trying a Lumix S1 camera out and the Panasonic version flash trigger wouldn’t fit. I have two of these flashes and there is no issue at all. The only input I have is that you do have to hold in the release until it is fully mounted.
For full body or half body shots, why not use a 28mm especially if you don’t have space to step backwards. It’s probably not ideal for close-up head shots, depending on intended final usage. Personally I prefer a 24mm over a 28mm. The lighting did remind me of Terry Richardson’s work, but not the content or his attitude.
@@kaskoPhoto I meant Richardson's attitude towards his models. There have been a lot of accusations against him of sexual harassment, exploitation and assault, coercing the models into doing things they weren't comfortable with or willing to do. He's been blacklisted by his former major clients and the industry in general. Possibly the most (in)famous GWC.

It is hand made from a sheet of Velum paper. I just cut it to size. I ordered black rubber bands to hold it on (the tan one is poking at my OCD)
Forget the rules people made up. Great quote!
Thank you. I can’t stand half the stuff that’s put out there.

I use Vellum and cut it out then attach with a rubber band. Use the favorite gear link - it’s under Support Gear.

Does the flash suit also on other brand's?
It may work for most.
