So far we've got The Vaselines, Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, The Soup Dragons, Average White Band, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Mogwai, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, Snow Patrol (sure they're Irish, but they're based in Glasgow now), and Rod Stewart. We're doing pretty good!

But The Vaseline has something more to it (character) & the horn part on the studio version. I was introduced to The Vaselines before Nirvana had their "Bleach" record. I was excited that Nirvana did a few Vaselines covers. I'm glad The Vaselines are back. Real good music unlike what's on the radio.

I will always prefer the Nirvana versions, but that's because I enjoy that style more and adore Nirvana as a band. But credit goes to the Vaselines for beautiful songs, especially of those from Kurt Cobain to draw inspiration from. The original versions of the songs aren't bad, just not to your taste if you don't like 'em. And without them we wouldn't have the covers Nirvana did.
I've _always_ wanted to ask these guys, how they really felt about the emotion, energy & raw anger that Nirvana put into their songs, whenever they covered The Vaselines music? Was it interesting to see their music changed so drastically or was it more off putting? Did they get new fans when Nirvana's fans discovered them, when looking to hear how the originals sounded? I heard an interview and they said they loved Nirvana's covers. If you look it up you can see that they joined Nirvana on stage a few times as well. Plus I'm sure they appreciated the royalty cheques that came in:)

This was recorded in 09, so Kurt never did get to hear this particular cut. Oddly, it does seem like Nirvana released a version of this song before The Vaselines, but Kurt has called the song a cover, so it's safe to assume he heard A version of The Vaselines playing it. A lot of punk bands had songs that didn't make it onto an album right away, or sometimes not at all.

The vaselines did not write this tune for Nirvana.. they wrote this song at least ten yrs before nirvana were dominating the world.
